Big Brother Takes In Another SINBAD Screening!!
Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab.
Dreamworks appears to have kicked the SINBAD test screenings into high gear now. This is our second review from the second screening in as many weeks. Word is encouraging so far, and I’ll let “Big Brother” explain to you what he liked about what he saw:
Hi Harry and Moriarty--
I saw the review last week on your site for DreamWorks' SINBAD. Me and my little brother went to another screening of it this afternoon here in Sacramento.
Only about 75% of the film was finished and the rest was in black and white, but walking out of SINBAD all I could think is that with the recent weak regular animated movies, this movie will bring 2-D animation back to life. Don't get me wrong, I really liked SPIRITED AWAY and TREASURE PLANET, but after unimpressing movies like TITAN AE, THE ROAD TO EL DORADO and LILO & STITCH, I can see why studios are doing more CGI movies like ICE AGE, SHREK and MONSTERS INC. Not only do these movies look great, the stories are great too and they make a ton of money. SINBAD has the great story and takes 2-D animation to the next level... yeah, it incorporates some CGI in there, but for the most part, the animation and action captures you from minute one to the closing scene!
When the guy in front of the movie theatre gave me the pass to the movie starring Brad Pitt, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michelle Pfeiffer, I was all over it and since it's animated, I made my little 9 year old bro come with me. This movie follows Sinbad (Brad Pitt), a thieving pirate/traveler on his quest to get the Book of Peace back from the evil Eris played by Michelle Pfeifer, the powerful Goddess of Chaos. She framed Sinbad by posing as him to steal the book so to save face, he goes on his journey to get it back and to save the world. On his voyage, he comes across Marina (Catherine Zeta-Jones) and takes a liking to her. She however, is the girlfriend of his childhood friend, played by Joseph Fiennes. She is on board to make sure he doesn't run away and tries to get the book back. Many humorous, action packed and breathtaking scenes follow.
The part that stood out the most for me was how great Eris was. DreamWorks added a freshness to animation by stepping up and delivering one of the greatest animated villains since Grand Jafar in ALADDIN. She is ruthless, sexy and funny. The way she is animated is just so amazing, you truly have to see it for yourself. She was like living smoke. Sinbad was very funny, kind of in the likes of an animated Westley (Cary Elwes) from THE PRINCESS BRIDE. Marina was a cool side-kick that didn't take away from the flow of the film. Every time you think Sinbad and her are about to kiss, more action is thrown at you. My brother's favorite character was Sinbad's dog and side-kick, Spike. Spike adds a lot of the humor that kids will enjoy where Sinbad and Eris add the humor that adults will enjoy!
The adventure, the look and the pacing reminded me of the INDY films and Disney's ALADDIN. The movie is kind of like if you hooked up with Aladdin ten years later, ditched the irritating Genie, and bought him a boat and a dog. The monsters (Giant Squid, the Sirens, Giant Hawk, etc.) are so cool, the characters are great and the story is great and enjoyable for both kids and adults! I really think it has the legs to stand with all of the other big summer movies! On a scale of one to ten, I'd give it a nine and my little brother said he'd give it an eleven! This movie is so full of action and substance from scene one to the end credits, I just cannot wait to see it again when it's finished!
Big BrotherIf ALADDIN is the back wall of the ballpark that Katzenberg wants to hit this one over, it’s an admirable goal, and it sounds like people have been excited by what they’ve seen so far.
"Moriarty" out.

From a world past hope and fear, I bid you genie now appear.
-
Although I am rather worried that the reviewer was unimpressed by Lilo & Stitch, which sounds positively contrary.
-
There wasn't much to Aladdin without the Genie. A truly astonishing work of genius from Eric Goldberg.
-
'nuff said. dreamworks animation sucks
-
You know, all they need to do, is get rid of the damn "funny" animal sidekicks and these movies would be a hell of a lot better.....
Buncha dumbass pricks.... -
It doesn't matter story wise or characters or concepts for CG right now. ANYTHING CG is going to make money cuz, Much like the lion king way back, there's a demand for it. It'll eventually die down. As for Teso Dos Bichos whining about originality, Disney made HUGE cash on aladin, beauty and the beast...things that had been done to death, the only difference is back then if it was animated it was gold. It may come around again for 2d but I doubt it. 4 days work left on Sinbad...then I can go and find a nice comfortable box in an alley to sleep in. (unless I go work in the sweathshops over seas). I hope 2d makes a comeback... with the exception of Pixar, I hate the way CG looks. (well Ice age looked okay in parts)

A certain level or style of positivity does mark a plant review. This review is, most definitely, a plant. I'm not saying that the movie sucks and it needs this sort of underhanded publicity, or that every positive review is a plant- simply that the style and tone of the review indicates that it is not genuine. For instance, what non-plant entity would write "SINBAD has the great story and takes 2-D animation to the next level... the animation and action captures you from minute one to the closing scene!" That sounds exactly like one of those review blurbs pulled from the Topeka Courier-Gazzette or some other no-name newspaper. In fact I'd be willing to bet that exact blurb will be featured in the coming advertisements for this movie. Case in point, how could the movie be so captivating from start to finish if the film is only 75% complete?

I mean, c'mon...he LIKED Treasure Planet but didn't like Lilo & Stitch or Road to El Dorado? Sounds like he's all about eye candy but doesn't give two shits about story or character development.
-
That beautifully done, subversive little fable is a billion times better than Treasure Planet - makes me suspect this guy is an idiot or a plant - or both...
...but I loves the animation, so I will see it...
Trizzle twazzle, twazzle trone,
Time for this one to come home. -
How many real people actually would use a line like "Many humorous, action packed and breathtaking scenes follow."
Come on folks give the movie a chance with out planting the Snot of it.....
Eire go bragh -
...but I greet this movie with the stubborn loyalty of an extremely devout Ray Harryhausen fan.

So, do Cathy and Michelle look as hot animated as they do in the
by osmosis jones
And are either of them as scantily clad as Chel? When's this due out, anyways?
-
Not only is this "review" ridiculously giddy, but it's an attempt to minimize Moogle's critics of Michelle Phiffer as Eris and Spike (the dog). If that's not enough, talkback discussions about the entertainment value for Adults vs. Kids is totally blown off with: "the characters are great and the story is great and enjoyable for both kids and adults!" Puh-Leeze.

not just a plant, but a mutant Little-Shop-of-Horrors plant
by optimus grime
If this _isn't_ a plant, then Big Brother is trying awfully hard to convince himself that he had a good time. Honestly, how many exclamation points does one man need? "Hmm, my overuse of superlatives isn't getting the job done. Must ... add ... excessive ... punctuation."
He's certainly not convincing us, telling us up front that he liked Treasure Planet. -
First Titan A.E. flops, then Treasure Planet, and soon Sinbad will, too. None one seems to understand that the reason Aladdin and Indy were so great was because they struck a great _balance_ between adventure and humor, then added a dash of romance. Just straight adventure DOESN"T work in the animated realm, at least at the box office.
-
was a sugar-coated soulless piece of Disney manufactured product. Fun, but soulless. It ain't got nuthin' on Spirited Away. I fully expect the Oscar for best animated movie to go to L&S, because the Oscars are based on money, popularity and politics moreso than on quality.
-
....but voiced by Brad Pitt? He's got a terrible monotone to be doing voice-overs! I'll check it out, just the same! Lilo & Stitch is one of the better Disney (not counting Pixar) cartoons to come out in a long time, IMO.
-
Sinbad movies are all about the monsters! This sounds so far from the original stories of Sinbad that I'm pretty skeptical it will be any good.
-
Why are you always coming around these talkbacks going on about your involvement with Sinbad? So you drew some lines between lines. Big frigging deal. As you can tell by the zero reactions, no one here cares. (PS: Braveheart still sucks.)
