Nezman infiltrates Tracy Island and gives us the scoop on THUNDERBIRDS!!!

Published at:  Mar 04, 2003 12:09:54 PM CST

Hey folks, Harry here... God I'd love some images from the live action set of Tracy Island... that's just cool. Personally I'm still in a bit of shock that this film is being filmed. I dug hell out THUNDERBIRDS, but at the same time... mentally I can't imagine it not being puppets. There's a part of me that wants digital effects done to all the actors tha make their mouths move like super-marionation (or however that's spelled) Here ya go...

Thunderbirds Being Filmed At Pinewood Studios England

Hi there Harry and everyone else,

Thought I'd let you know about the All New Live Action Thunderbirds movie currently being shot at Pinewood studios here in England. I can't tell you what I have to do with the film, as I've only just started and don't want to jinx it! I should be able to keep you updated, and as soon as I can I will send you some photos.

On set at moment here at lot 6. It looks basically like the inside of  Tracy Island from the TV show.Only more modern and not made of carboard!. There is a big hole in the floor where sparks come up when filming, this seems to be some damage that has happened when Tracy Island came under attack (sub story which not show in film. we only hear about it) life is getting back to normal after some big event when they get "the call". Something BIG is happening on lot 2, I'm not allowed in because I don't have clearance, but Production is trying to keep it under tight wraps.

The film is by Tracy Films Ltd, and the story is unclear to me at the moment. The basic outline of the story is that something (possibly belonging to the Government) is stolen, and while the Thunderbirds team are trying to recover it, one of the 5 Tracy brothers gets kidnapped and the mission then turns into a rescue and recovery.
The set is spaced out over about 5 of the Studios' 19 stages ñ including the world famous Albert R Broccoli 007 Stage.
We know the Bond film ran over, and this has something to do with the script being changed. Why? I'll never know. But the crew seem more than happy about the script change.

Now I know this isn't the best information in the world, but I've been so busy down here trimming the verge at the moment that getting information is like getting blood from a stone. And I'm not talking about Mick either!

Hope this helps,

Nezman

I've been enjoying the silliness of the puppet version since A&E put em out on DVD... neat stuff, that i would have loved as a kid if they'd shown em here in the US of A at that time period...

There are two ways to do fictional characters in movies

    by terry_1978

Either animation or live action. Granted, it would have been interesting to see Thunderbirds done in cartoon form, but most popular cartoons, comic books, novels, etc. get live action treatment when it comes to films, mostly because they have the technology available now to pull off the stuff they do in the fictional world. Granted, they're snatching up every comic, cartoon, and book they can find right now, and regardless if you despise CGI or not, it's somewhat of a rebirth in the industry, albeit a sometimes unoriginal one.

The Thunderbirds are interesting for about 5 whole minutes until you realize you're an adult and you're watching a puppet show.

    CGI

    by andel crodo

Now, personally, I believe this is one property that could have gone all CGI, like Final Fantasy. The same look could be adopted as the original done with puppets, granting more fluid range of motion and retaining suspension of disbelief, while still resembling the source material its based on. Let's face it, live action will only marginally resemble the original... and what's in a name? Without those big goofy heads, it ain't Thunderbirds. Just a Mission Impossible rip with a psuedo-futuristic beat.

    by mortsleam

Ah yeah, full frontal puppet nudity...Actually, I'm afraid this will become just another big-budget action shlock-fest, like Lost In Space, where the charm of the original is subsumed by standard Hollywood formula.

    Their mouths didn't even move.

    by nice marmot

"There's a part of me that wants digital effects done to all the actors tha make their mouths move like super-marionation (or however that's spelled)" Hey Harry, I saw Thunderbirds the other night on TV. I had forgotten how wonderfully crappy it was. The puppet mouths didn't even move. You don't need digital effects, you could just have the actors not move their mouths & then use voiceover. This should NOT be made into a movie unless its puppets. It's amazing how easy it is to be unoriginal & still make money these days.

    GO!!

    by deandome

Jeez, all I've heard is how people are pissed that the script's lame & that it's going to be in the vein of "Spy Kids", and it's just gonna suck in general.

Well I LOVE the series, and while A&E's DVDs are good, I end up watching it mostly on Tech TV, where they have really cool "pop-up video" type comments that make it even more fun.

My TWO YEAR old loves them too! I mean REALLY loves them, not some cursory, passing toddler fad (he's nuts for the MOLE especially)!! I tracked down a complete set of toys (made in the '90s, not the super collectible Dinkys!)that he brings out to play with while watching the show....EVERY DAY (evening, actually, as we Tivo the 12:30 am showings).

But the bottom line is that this WAS and IS designed for KIDS!! Yes, I (and other juvenile adults!) still get a kick out of it, but frankly I'm GLAD they seem to be making the movie for the "Spy Kids" audience (a great movie!).

What do you want, something more Star Trekky? Star Warsian?
Not me! I'd be pissed if they went after the older audience.

Bottom line...It MIGHT still suck, but that would only be because it's a bad script, not because it's not a teen/adult movie!!! I for one have my fingers crossed that it will be a good film that (here comes the cliche!) the WHOLE FAMILY can enjoy!

Kidnap Rescue mission? Isn't like every single action movie a kidnap rescue mission? Sheesh...they should've done this in porn style. Marionette porn hasn't been done before!

    Rim Tin-Tin??

    by deandome

I like the porn idea, but the wires would be a bitch to work with.

And in response to a few other posts...

Thunderbirds WERE shown in the mid-late '60s in the US!! I can't recall if it was national or some UHF/syndicated deal in a few markets only, but I was into them big-time as a kid (I was about 4-6, putting the air dates at about '67-'68, so it WAS delayed a bit!). I had the original die-cast Dinky toys that could probably put my kid through college if I still had 'em.

OF COURSE THEIR MOUTHS MOVED!! I mean every word they spoke!! Not to bore the majority here who know what SuperMarionation was, but mouth movements were actually controlled electronically-the dialogue was taped and when played back, solenoids moved the mouths in perfect synch with human voices. Pretty advanced stuff for 1963, but Jerry Anderson actually came up with it BEFORE TBs for another puppet series he did (Supercar?).

    by weedymcsmokey

I never thought I'd have any kind of nostagic whimsy for good old fashioned rip-offs - like Disney's bastardizations of the Brothers Grimm. Seems almost humble by today's standards. Is anyone involved in this genuinely excited about playing a poorly remembered puppet? The publicity tour for this is going to look like a travelling morgue.

They better all float around the room with their arms at hip-level or this story won't work. Will Shane Rimmer make a cameo? What about Ed Bishop? Next up: Captain Scarlet? Peter Graves HAS to be Colonel White.

    If it ain't broke . . .

    by chicagoronin

Y'know, part of me is enthusiastic about the idea of seeing a modernized take on "Thunderbirds" with lives actors and modern effects, and another part of me is not so jazzed. I think part of the charm of shows like "Thunderbirds" is its 60s-era style, slightly cheezy production values, and, yeah, those big-headed puppets. Sometimes tons of money and fancy effects, and even big-name stars, is not the answer. Think about the big-budget FOX-TV version of "Doctor Who" or the 90s "Lost In Space" movie.

    by swithin

There was a crappy Canadian attempt called Gundam Savior. It... shouldn't really count as a 'Gundam' movie, but whatever. It has a few interesting points (such as the lead being named after a rather tasty jelly), watch at your own risk. Just remember, sometimes balls to do a project are enough to also release it in an incredibly bad form.

For starters, Pinewood Stages are not numbered, they are letters of the alphabet Stage A, B,C etc.

Secondly the last production at Pinewood was Tomb Raider II and Bond did not over run.

    FAB

    by rcfuzz

FAB doesn't stand for anything. It is not an an acronym. It just means, "OK" or "Acknowledged." It was derived from "fabulous" or "fab" which was a popular expression in Brittan in the 60's (like The Beatles were called "The Fab Four."
