From AFM - Comes a High Res look at RED DWARF The Movie

Published at:  Feb 26, 2003 11:46:37 AM CST

Hey folks, Harry here... Here's the teaser images for RED DWARF THE MOVIE. Looks like Red Dwarf to me...

Dear Harry,

I've been hanging out at AFM recently, and I've been noticing your guy Quint hanging on to some handsome debonair sip of a man. Well, that's a sailor for you.

Anyway, I noticed that Dark Horizons has put up a low res
image of the teaser poster from 'Red Dwarf - The
Movie' - well - in my bag I have the flyer from AFM, so I figured I'd scan it for you and all those folks that read AICN. Keep kicking ass!

This has been too long coming! I mean, not all British sitcoms are all that - you yanks get the best and the brightest from us and (generally) vice versa, but Red Dwarf will be big fun on the big screen. My only worry is the effects. Crap effects were an integral part of the series, but will those work on the big screen for Dwarf virgins? And will decent effects ruin the experience for the fans?Ai ai ai. The cast are looking as young as ever - I suspect that there may be some portraits in the attic somewhere. Anyone know anything more about the plot? Any chance of Danny John Jules getting to kick ass like he did in Blade 2? Oh, and it's spelt bollocks, not bollicks. But it will, indeed, be those of the dog.

    by glynyfaron

..unless, of course, the first scene involves the death of Kochanski. Red Dwarf was a show of diminishing quality before her arrival, after she joined the cast it seemed to joyously hurl itself over the shark, never to return. To be fair, the cast have worn well over the years but this must surely mark the end of a show that peaked about a decade ago.

The last season ended on a cliffhanger, but rather than continue on from that they've just decided to do this whole Borg-esque thing... Sounds like there'll be a lot of action. Hopefully it'll be at least as good as the last season was, that was a real return to form after the dreadful season seven.

Great to finally get news of the plot. The storyboards at www.reddwarf.co.uk look cool as well. But this was meant to film years ago. The site itself said that it's currently planned to film in March, but a recent interview with Doug Naylor said this had been pushed back to the summer. I hope it will happen but severely doubt that it will.

    Death ships?

    by big_kahuna

i swear there were never any death ships in the original series OR books...as far as i remember, the idea was that the whole crew died in a nuclear leakage apart from lister, n the ship's computer holly flew it several thousand light years away from the solar system, so...no death ships. personally,i think this film will suck, i love red dwarf but i think most fans would prefer a conclusion to the loose ends of the last series rather than being told the origins of the story in a new and less-than-exciting way, but meah, who knows how it'll turn out? i'll still see it i guess, i just hope its good and they cut out that fucking irritating kochanski bitch. Yes this project has been mooted for at least 3 years maybe more. I hate to put a dampeners on the news but even if the film were to be made it wouldn't have the sort of budget to do the film justice. That's been half the problem - finding funding.

    by badboymason

I too thought when i read the plot synopsis: "Thats not what happened." But if you reread it: We never knew what happened on Earth since Red Dwarf left the solar system, but apparently: while Red Dwarf was away for 3 million years, the robot/cyborgs took over the solar system and killed everyone, and only Red Dwarf remains as it was 3 million years into Deep Space. Means we finally find out the fate of mankind in the RD universe...

Y'know whilst Red Dwarf was amusing for a season or two it really plunged down the toilet never to return after the Grant/Naylor partnership finished. Thereafter Red Dwarf has existed merely to fleece funds from the hardcore fans. And don't get me started on Chloe Annett. I'm sure she's a lovely woman in the flesh but good God she's appalling at that acting melarkey. How she landed her gigs in Dwarf and the mercifully short lived Crime Traveller baffles me completely. I'm guessing her agent has pictures of the BBC board of governors enjoying sexual congress with farm yard animals. But then that still leaves me wondering how she ever managed to acquire an agent.

At any rate a Red Dwarf movie is the last thing we need. Especially since Dark Star was fairly clearly their inspiration from the get go.

    by smeg for brains

It's been known on the show for some time that the human race is extinc except for Lister, and that there are all kinds of GELFs and Simulants around, and that the simulants hate humans and kill them whenever they find them. Anyone who doesn't know about Red Dwarf won't realize that it is about Lister as the last human (accept for the crew of the rebuilt Red Dwarf, but hopefully the movie will start off with something like Lister and the gang escaping and the reborn crew getting wiped out). I thought Series six was a very good idea with Red Dwarf lost. Also series seven was pretty good as well, but series eight left a lot to be desired, though it too had it's funny moments. It was just way too much of a departure for the show.

I apparently only watched the first two seasons (long long ago), so I'm absolutely all for it. I think Cat is one of the most inspired characters ever, and the whole cast just brim with playfulness. (Except, when did they get a girl on board? Confused.) I'd definitely go see it (assuming it would play anywhere near me -- sounds straight-to-video simply because of the market), I just hope the producers fund this movie entirely with shoestrings to keep the craptastic crapplastic effects/design intact. Spend the money on the cast.

THIS NEWS IS 5 YEARS OLD

    by thecruelc

Harry - take this shit off the website. This flyer is 5 years old. It was used to try and get funding for the movie. Proof? Look at the section describing the fan club website. It says that fan club website has been running for 10 years. That was true 5 years ago. Go to the website named, and it will show that the website is now, indeed 15 years old. This movie will probably never get made - all the actors are too old, and they already squeezed the last drop of blood from the premise. ... oh, and Randle - I'm sick of all your whining. I reckon you and Fett are the same lonely person.

    by schnorbitz

That was used for Mary Poppins, the interior of Axis Chemicals in Batman and series 2 of Gamesmaster. Previous posters are correct: series 1-6 were very good indeed. Series 7 was dire. Series 8 was marginally better, but I really didn't have the heart to see that series to the end. The flyer can't be that old (mentions of Blade 2 and Tomb Raider 2), but are Chris Barrie's best screen credits really the Tomb Raider movies? And Scrapheap Challenge (as it's known here) is hugely entertaining. Just look at the recent Christmas special megachallenge between teams from the USA, France and Britain to build an early aeroplane from 1900s scrap. Every country stood true to its stereotype - and would I give too much of the ending away to say there was cheering in my house at its conclusion?

A 5-year-old brochure isn't gonna list Chris Barrie's acting credits as TOMB RAIDER 1 & 2. If it's been changed, then it's reasonable to hope that the funding came through. And really, who doesn't want to see this movie deep-down? If anything, it'll keep Barrie busy long enough to forestall TOMB RAIDER 3 for at least six further months. That in itself would be worth the cost of making RD. (As for the movie itself, sounds like a gas. As long as they keep Joel Schumacher out of the director's chair, should be fine. I don't need to see rubber nipples on Kryten just yet.)

A dead female? And rimmer still a hologram, oh sh*t...

    by theferretlives

First off series 8 was not crap and did not suck, it has the most laughs per minute than any of the series. It was a great idea to bring the whole crew back but still have the main cast separated from them for the most part. After all the idea of only a few ppl left only came about because the writers wanted it as cheap as chips so it would be taken on by the tightarsed bbc.
The best episodes in the earlier series were always the flashback ones or eps like Stasis Leak when they got to go back to when the crew were all alive.
I think the formula was wearing very thin by the 7th series and that one was pretty dire. The 8th brought a much needed change and a return to the character driven fun of the first two.
Two things confuse me - Rimmer is a hologram again? The hologram idea wore very thin in the series, so much so they made him able to touch and interact and then sent him off to be Ace Rimmer and resurrected the old neurotic and non herioc Rimmer. I can't see the point of bringing him back as a hologram again, unless they work out a way that he is downloaded into the projection not just a simulation of the real person. And a dead female? Kochanski a hologram? WTF happened there? Well saying that dead is the best place for her.
It will probably be bloody awful anyway, like Mr Bean or Notting Hill, a brit flick trying to hard to be liked over the pond (sounds like our prime minister at the mo!) and losing its integrity. Ode to the days of series one and two, sigh....

That the 'crew' of the Red Dwarf might have a short shelf-life? I mean, the reconstituted humans were literally an added feature thrown in by a used-car salesman (of sorts) to 'seal the deal'. Who knows whether the nanites built them to last? That would also explain Rimmer becoming Goal-post Head again.

Erm...since when was Danny John-Jules in the first Blade film? Oh, and Red Dwarf started to suck with the onset of Series III and a half-decent (for BBC Sci-Fi TV anyway) budget. Shoddy SFX and slapstick replaced the character-based comedic genius of series I and II.

    by jamestct

Part of me wishes they would start from scratch and make the first book into a film, because the book is absolutly brilliant and would make a wonderful film. Hell, they could do the first 3 books LOTR style, back to back, one a year. "Better than Life" would also be a fabulous movie, and would have a brilliant ending with the polymorph breaking loose on a ship. Hell, you could make a whole film about the polymorphs and it would kick ass. However, I have a feeling that it will suck, especially as it will be missing the studio audience laughter - comedy shows made into films never seem much good when the laughter is taken away. So if this is gonna be an all new story - set it about the time of series 5/6 before Kochanski wrecked everything, do the effects PROPERLY this time (the CGI in series 7 and 8 was smegging AWFUL! Bring back minitures any gay) and put Ace Rimmer in for a James Bond style pre-credits opener.

    by smerph

As a long term fan of Red Dwarf (barring series 7, which was mostly awful - and 8, which was completely awful), thought I'd chuck in my two cents.

Firstly, that "Synopsis" sounds slightly similar to the 4th Red Dwarf Novel, "Backwards". That was written by co-creator Rob Grant, who has nothing to do with this movie.

Secondly, I'm pretty certain that Danny-John Jules was not in the first Blade movie.

Thirdly, to THEFERRETLIVES ; the initial idea of having a small group of people onboard a ship was the whole point of the show -not because of budget restrictions.

I have mixed feelings about a movie. Every further escapade seems to insult the memory of a once great show.

Blatant fake. List of reasons :)

    by ten98

Quite obviously made in Photoshop. A number of obvious mistakes jump out at me.

The rivet graphic is the same rivet repeated over and over, and stretched quite unprofessionally in the second image.

it claims to be a scanned image, yet we see no variation in brightness or focus common to scanned images.

If this is a leaflet, either it is a single sheet with the front arranged portrait and the back arranged landscape, highly unprofessional. OR it is a fold out and the first picture is the front cover, in which case where are the fold lines?

Surely Winchester Films would capitalise their own name.

The added text (winchester films presents, Coming soon) does not look the same as the actual red dwarf logo.

the information on the back is mostly completely irrelevant to the film. internet addresses, books, fan club details, merchandise information. The kind of information a derranged fan would be interested in, probably the same fan that knocked this up.

the information on the back is layed out very unprofessionally, slapped all over the place, and some of the text looks very photoshopped and far too distinct for a scan. The headers for "Books" and "Internet" are not parallel with the body text, wheras the rest of the headers are.

The group shot on the second image is obviously a composite image, as the light sources are in different places, Kryten has a bright light source to the left of his head, wheras rimmer has flat light face on. Also the image has been touched up by hand where the characters join. Admittedly a real flyer may well use a composite image instead of a real group shot, but it seems a lot of effort. If they really were making the movie it would be easy to simply take a promotional photo.

The glass effect in front of their faces is a standard photoshop filter.

The set in the background is from the early episodes of the TV show.

Nice try whoever made this, but it just doesn't look real at all. They obviously put a lot of effort into it.

Craig Charles is happy presenting Robot wars and various other UK television programmes, Robert Llewellyn is enjoying success with Scrapheap challenge, I doubt either of them want to return to the horrible sci-fi geekyness of Red Dwarf, especially given the disaster that was series 8, and face obsessions of the cloying star-trek-esque fans again.

If you spot any other obvious errors in this please post them :)

Well I don't know if this is fake or not, but the movie has been talked about more recently. If it gets made, I hope the BBC go back to using models for the Ships instead of their dodgy attempts at CGI. It looked bloody terrible! They even went back to the first two series and re-did all the models in CGI, spoilt it for me. At least the DVD boxed sets have the original SFX. Bee good to see the old gang back together. by smeg for brains

The idea was born out of a radio sketch they had done about the last human alive on a ship where the only company that he had was the ships computer. They just expanded this concept into Red Dwarf. They did plan on offsetting the scenes of Lister and co. with many more flashbacks to the old days, to show more of Listers loneliness, and this was sacrificed a lot in order to save money, but the idea of Lister and a few other characters being the main focus of the show was there from day one.

He worked on season 1-6 which are excellent. 7 and 8 where some of the worst television I have ever watched, that is quite a change. As far as I know the movie is going to be the same "talent" that brought us season 7 and 8, so who cares?!?!? Someone please tell me Im wrong, and the original writing "team" (obviously one talented member, and another...driftwood)has reformed, and we will get classic Red Dwarf....

it may well get made in the end, but as that news report points out, it's Noel Gay Films at the moment, not winchester.

The Flyer is fake, the film is not.
