Hey folks, Harry here with the BAFTAS. Personally I would have given Adrien Brody the Best Actor award and Salma Hayek the Best Actress award. Oh, and TWO TOWERS for Make-Up. Lastly, I would have given SYMPATHY FOR MR VENGEANCE best film not in the English language, but then... it wasn't even nominated cuz nobody has seen it... sigh. Anyways, here are the winners!

    The Pianist

    by themanwithnoname

God I hope The Pianist wins best picture here in America. It would be a shame to give it to Chicago or The Hours over this.. But then Gangs of New York doesn't have a snowman's chance in hell. So I'm all for the Pianist. Daniel Day Lewis for best actor is absolutely right!

The picks were excellent, the show was excellent, Stephen Fry was once again sublime, and no adverts or gay dance numbers. Oh and no Whoopee Goldberg. Oscars take note.

just finished watching this on tv, must say that it was a better watch than the oscars mainly cause it was edited down to 2 hours me thinks. glad city of god won something as it is an excellent film. just like to say that the public vote was based on the top 10 grossing films so of course the pianist was going to be voted for (thomas edison u dic). the pianist was such the best film as well, its a shame it won't win the oscar but i'm glad bafta can see past 13yr old girls from 1977.

God forbid anybody has a little joy in their life. Lighten up a little, man. You must work for the Post Office or DMV or something. (And try to expand your vocabulary beyond the usual profanities--such words should remain the domain of the uncreative, inarticulate people of the world).

    Good choices all in all

    by adt100

A few surprises in that list, but generally I think the Academy have made some good decisions there.

As usual, the British Academy don't like to slavishly follow the trends set by the Golden Globes or Academy Awards, and very rarely seem to shower 1 particular film with the majority of awards (which is a good thing IMO, though maybe doesn't have quite the PR value of the Oscar 'mass winners').

I expected The Hours to do slightly better (especially as it was nominated in Best British Film as well as Best Film, but I'm glad that the (IMO) OTT Chicago didn't romp home with loads of awards (as will not doubt happen at the Oscars.

    by elwood blues

Hmmm... still haven't decided if Thomas Edison is a troll, or just someone in need of serious mental help. In the event of the former, I find great amusement. Definilty some of the more entertaining trolling I've seen lately. However if it's the latter... my God you're in need of serious help. If someone expressing a two line messege of joy over the popular vote awarding his favoriter movie (of the year one line of which congratulate and recognized the Pianist for its award)is enough for you to fill several hate filled messages, either shoot yourself in the head to put youself out of misery, or seek professional help, cause somethings not right. But I'm 75 percent sure you're a troll, and a pretty good one at that.

    Walken

    by suzycreamcheese

Walken won something or the other and never showed up. Unlike other non-attendees (Kaufman Shaussman), one has to assume that Walken was doing something no doubt cooler at the time than getting a limey award. Something evil yet tasteful. Ah! props to Walken - jolly good show old bean, brings tears to my eyes.

  • "i will eventually kill myself, so i must deliver every word with immense gravity." i think she wrote that on a piece of paper and carried it around with her throughout the production. who cares if she put some rubber on her nose and disguised her voice. it was a horrible, horrible performance in an otherwise brilliant movie. she makes one acting choice per role, and this time she was way off. i hope the academy gets it right and recognizes Lane or Moore.

Some disappointments, but mostly a good turnout here....

    by cooldan989

I really want Christopher Walken to take home the Oscar, and this is one step closer for him. However, I don't want The Pianist to win Best Picture, or Roman Polanski Best Director. I want either Chicago or Gangs of New York to take home the Best Picture Oscar, and it BETTER be Martin Scorscese taking home a long-overdue Best Director Oscar. He put his blood and sweat into this movie for years on end, and with all the great movies he's done he damn well deserves an Oscar. But other than that, a good turnout.

    by schnorbitz

Saw some of the awards ceremony - it was scheduled against episode 2 of 24. I am one of the few people who saw The Warrior, and it was probably the most complete-feeling of the films nominated for outstanding British feature, although I felt Sweet 16 was the best British film of last year. Incidentally, I finally saw The Two Towers this morning. I just didn't enjoy it that much. *Please don't hit me!* There was about an hour and a half of people in elaborate costumes running around beautiful landscapes. And whenever anyone arrived at a new location, someone had to pronounce in a loud voice "Ah, here we are at the cursed forest of Llareggub", or "Oh no, the mines of Ystradgynlais. We must be careful". Another New Zealand hill, another silly name. I just wasn't really touched by it, with the exception of Golem/Smeagol's schizophrenic scene. In fact, I saw Catch Me If You Can this afternoon, and thought it was a very good film indeed, much better than TTT. I feel terrible for not liking the Lord of the Rings films. Fanboys, please don't send the contract killers after me, I've got to be on Treasure Hunt next week. (UK readers will know what I mean...)

    AICN continues anti-Scorsese campaign

    by lazarus long

I loved The Pianist and Adrien Brody's performance, but I can't understand why Harry would begrudge an award to Daniel Day Lewis. Not only have none of the AICN staff included Gangs of New York in their best-of lists, but they are refusing to even mention it. Harry can't even comment favorably on Lewis' LEGENDARY performance. Let me tell you something, people: Whatever you may think of Gangs of New York, Bill the Butcher is a character that is going to go down in cinematic history. Amy Taubin, in her mixed review for Film Comment, points out that the amazing thing about DD-L is that he managed to give an organic and mythic performance at the same time. Brody was great, especially because we haven't seen him in this good a role before, but in 20 years people won't still be talking about it. Same goes for Nicholson in About Schmidt. If Brando deserved his award for The Godfather (where he also was organic and mythic), Daniel deserves his day with a second Oscar.

CoolDan989, Scorsese doesn't deserve an Oscar!

    by zenda

I don't care if he "put his blood and sweat into this movie for years on end", he made a really lousy movie. If he wins (and I think it should go to Rob Marshall myself), it will be because Miramax has pushed this as a "body of work" Oscar, not a deserved one for this awful film. If he wins, it will just goes to show that, not Martin Scorsese, but Harvey Weinstein rules!

It's good to see a decent movie win any awards, no matter how insignificant. FOTR was robbed at the Oscars last year and no doubt TTT will be shafted this year. Thomas Edison, to coin a phrase, can eat a dick. If you haven't already... There isn't that what we come here for? To call each other names most wouldn't dare in real life? Oh and occasionally there's something interesting about the movies too. Cheers.

Fear not, reasoned dislike of LotR is acceptable, even here. It's the blind, irrational hatred that gets everyone up in arms, the "I'm such a rebel, I don't like Lord of the Rings" attitude which is based entirely on abuse of the people who do like it. You should be safe enough. Although in fairness Tolkien's place-names aren't quite that ridiculous, I don't think. It sounds like you have been reading those fantasy books that come in more than 5 parts and are not written by Robert Jordan, and that's just not healthy. But have fun on Treasure Hunt.

I stand corrected. Loads of those fantasy books sound Welsh, probably at least partly thanks to Tolkien's influence and the fact that his Elvish (I am told) sounds very Welsh, so I didn't pick up on the realness.

    by e j thribb

Problewm with the BAFTAs is that they ape the Oscars too much now. They are so in thrall that a bunch of the films nominated haven't even been released overe here in blighty yet - eg Adaptation (which I want to see, and by all accounds deserves muchos awardos etc - but should have been for next years awards).

That being said it was good to see City of God getting a gong - and also The Warrior. Chris Walkens supporting actor was good to see too.
