There are two press releases posted below. The one about “Clone Wars,” which can be found if one scrolls to the bottom, doesn’t tell us a whole lot that Harry Knowles didn’t reveal back in November - but it does establish there will be 20 of these “Clone” shorts (totaling no more than 60 minutes of animation) and that they’ll air well before “Episode III” hits cinemas.

Cartoon Network and Lucasfilm Announce Star Wars Animated Shorts

20 Animated "Clone Wars" Serial Shorts to Appear on Cartoon Network in 2003-2004

Cartoon Network and Lucasfilm Ltd. announced today a partnership to create Star Wars: Clone Wars, a series of 20 animated shorts that will air on Cartoon Network in 2003-2004 between other programming. Star Wars: Clone Wars continues the saga where the live action feature film Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones left off - at the beginning of the Clone Wars, an epic civil war that pits the old Republic against a vast separatist movement led by the forces of evil.

Each episodic short will be two- to three-minutes in length and will air exclusively on Cartoon Network at regularly scheduled times during the network's regular programming beginning later this fall. Clone Wars will be produced at Cartoon Network Studios by a team led by Genndy Tartakovsky, the creator of Samurai Jack and Dexter's Laboratory.

As Clone Wars unfolds the valiant Jedi Knights lead the Republic's Clone Army against many new and ruthless adversaries across the galaxy. These new characters, epic battles and intricate stories will add an exciting new dimension to the Star Wars saga.

"We are incredibly excited to be working with Lucasfilm in creating an animated story that extends one of the world's most beloved entertainment properties," said Sam Register, senior vice president of development for Cartoon Network. "Cartoon Network's creative team will work hand-in-hand with Lucasfilm to make sure that our common vision for Clone Wars thrills Star Wars fans around the world."

"Genndy Tartakovsky and the team at Cartoon Network are tops in their field," said Howard Roffman, president of Lucas Licensing. "Their work on Samurai Jack shows that they can tell an epic story in a unique way, lavishing equal attention on dramatic battle scenes as well as the dramatic development of the characters."

Lucasfilm Ltd. is one of the leading independent film and entertainment companies in the world. Lucasfilm's businesses include George Lucas' film and television production and distribution activities. Lucasfilm's feature films have won 19 Oscars and received 52 Academy Award nominations, and its television projects have won 12 Emmy Awards. The Lucas group of companies also includes LucasArts Entertainment Company LLC, Lucas Digital Ltd. LLC, Lucas Licensing Ltd. and Lucas Online.

Cartoon Network, currently seen in 82.1 million U.S. homes and 145 countries around the world, is Turner Broadcasting System, Inc.'s 24-hour, ad-supported cable service offering the best in animated entertainment. Drawing from the world's largest cartoon library, Cartoon Network also showcases unique original ventures such as The Powerpuff Girls, Dexter's Laboratory, Samurai Jack, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Ed, Edd n Eddy and other Cartoon Cartoons. Since its launch in 1992, Cartoon Network has remained one of ad-supported cable's highest-rated networks. Good to hear that Tartakovsky and team are creating these Clone War shorts--last I heard the project "fell through" due to financial reasons. Samurai Jack has some brilliance to it, and their style and direction should lend themselves well to the cartoons. Curious what the art will be like...

    by brakkart

Dammit, loads of other shows get new episodes, but no new X-Men Evolution? It's an awesome show, one of my faves, unlike a lot of one-shot cartoons it actually tells an overarcing story that is really cool. Sure, it plays fast & loose with establish X-Men canon, but then not being a fan of the comic books, I actually prefer this version of events.

On the Plus side, they have the guy that came up with Samurai Jack in charge. Samurai Jack is quite possibly the best animated series I have ever seen.

Or is this gonna be a Sealab 2021 type show where they go for the weird, adult humor? Irrelevant Two Minute Tangents OR... "Is It Just Me..."

    by jollydwarf

...or do any of you actually get turned off when suits release the official press statements? It's like they use a software program to compose their announcement in the most annoyingly mundane and misguided way possible. Case in point. I used to work for the the Akron Beacon Journal. Not a prominent paper nationally, but for some reason, they inexplicably launched a "digital" paper that costs nine bucks a month to subscribe to. The only other papers available in this format are the L.A. Times, the N.Y. Times, The Washington Post, the Boston Globe, and one other that I can't remember. But it's a HUGE market. So as I was saying, they wanted me to try to sell it to "BrownsBackers" across the country, i.e. fanboys that don't have the intellectual capacity to comprehend art on any level. Fine. So I write a form letter that really tugs at the heartstrings of these guys (I am admittedly a pretty big pigskin fan myself) and I proofread it and submit it to my Dilbert-standard "superior". He HATES it, and writes some "professional", crackling dry piece of shit that has no pulse whatsoever. ***I*** talked to these people. I know how they can answer a phone defensively and with their "professional" demeanor until I say the word "Browns", and they you can literally hear the Pavlovian slobber hit the speakerphone. This happened repeatedly with various potential groups. Needless to say, I quit/got run, whichever you prefer (I have a new Dilbert job, so I haven't learned). But the point is that as much as I hate reading SOME of the "journalism" on this site, I UTTERLY LOATHE when these weasely George Costanza look-alikes get up at a podium and start spewing suitspeak. It just dirties the product perception, if you ask me. I guess that they HAVE TO do this from some arcane PROCEDURAL standpoint, or whatever, but it's just the biggest turnoff for the target audience. ***But what do you expect from the official announcement of yet another blow to the "Legend of the Myth" that was the Star Wars experience?*** There's no way that I'm going to try to "catch 'em all" when it comes to these irrelevant shorts. Look, THE SOONER WE GET THIS WRETCHED PREQUEL THING OVER WITH, THE BETTER. And don't get me started on the OT DVD fiasco. But anyways, I've got to go. Before I do, I've got an announcement: "We at Jollydwarf Inc. are pleased to announce that beginning in March, we will be accelerating our exciting, humorous, and insightful postings at "Ain't It Cool News". Every film aficianado, regardless of genre preferences, loves the timeless yet timely quips and metaphors that Jollydwarf contributes. We have also commissioned a quality control agency to augment the already exemplary musings of Jollydwarf. Since 2000, we have slowly but steadily amassed a following that continues to flourish to this day. These changes and modifications will help ensure that you, the reader, will be able to enjoy Jollydwarf posts and share these Talkback message board gems with friends, family, and other loved ones for many years to come." The weird thing is is that I bought a bunch of Zim merchandise for him in December (which includes two T-shirts and a stuffed doll of Gir in his robot form)and I never noticed any of it being around until recently. That sort of got my hopes up; maybe they were going to be making new episodes due to popular demand but I guess not. Carl is a God.

    whynoDVD?

    by abelman007

Why on God's green earth don't they realease Adult Swim shows on DVD? Don't the powers-that-be realize geeks are the number one consumers of shiny discs? And while they're at it, how about some Undergrads DVD action too.

Right. Since we ALL know that the Wachowski's patented the idea to turn a movie franchie into a cartoon...Grow up people, seriously...

    Clone Wars/Animatrix

    by pogo on my own

Now the Wachowskis did not originate the movie/cartoon thing, I am not aware of many or any other movies that did the kind of sideways sequel in that way. Clone Wars seems like it could be used to tie films 2 and 3 together. Animatrix is from what I understand supposed to inform you more as to what the Matrix is. These guys may very well have thought up this at the same time, but it is a bit odd.

SAMURAI JACK? Yes! Sealab 2021? No!

    by 1013nomore

I have no fondness for Sealab 2021, but I do immensely enjoy Samurai Jack. To each his own. (Unlike another poster, however, I would be very DISAPPOINTED if Cartoon Network had the bad taste air Family Guy. I'd rather have 4 hours of Scooby Doo than half an hour of Family Guy. And I have no fondness for Scooby Doo.) I'm happy about more Big O. I agree with the posters who want more Futurama! I loved Invader Zim. The Venture Brothers as a Jonny Quest parody was okay as a one-shot, but I wouldn't care to see a lot more episodes. (I ALREADY GET IT. I don't have to have 10 variations on the same joke or collection of jokes). Lastly, I would enjoy more Eltingville Club.

    Whatever happened to Johnny Bravo?

Just curious, esp. since a live action movie was rumored on this site.

    More Home Movies!!! WOO HOO!

    by samuraijeff

This is the best half hour segment in the Adult Swim block as far as I'm concerned. Although I'd love another 13 of Mission Hill, Home Movies has been the single most consistently funny program on all of Cartoon Network.

I'm psyched about my 15 minute hero's the Aqua Teen Hunger Force new episodes too.

"I should walk so that a child may live?.. Because.. That's what they do!"

    DVD PLAYER!!!! (thunk)

    by samuraijeff

Is anyone else disappointed wth Reign? And what is up with sticking Cowboy Bebop on at 1:30AM?

The Venture Brothers was flat out the funniest half hour of TV I've seen in a looooooooooooong time. Patrick Warburton as Brock was fantastic, especially the way his eyes would twitch and stuff before he killed something. The evil ninja who masturbates over technology... It was hilarious.

    Just felt like ranting...

    Clone Wars looks lame.

    by whomod

And I'll have to wait how long for more JLA cartoons????

They'd beter be worth the looooonng wait!

Yep. I agree, the sooner these prequels are over and done with, the sooner we can all forget they ever were.

  • The Matrix has more plagiarism in it than all of my high school research papers put together. Anyway, Lucasfilm did the movie to cartoon thing long before the Wachovia Brothers started photocopying comic books. I have to say though that the art that I saw from the Clone Wars isn't very good. That angular, low detailed Samurai Jack style of animation just sucks ass. It's just boring and uninspired.

    Cartoon Network

    by jack ryder

"No person with at least a quarter of a brain can now denine that Old George Boy is at the very least copying ideas (IF NOT OUT AND OUT PLAGIARIZING) Ideas from "influential" sources. What to guess what that influential souse was?! "
So where is this Anamatrix I keep hearing about? and George already did the whole cross media sequel thing with Shadow of the Empire so it's not so friggin' new.
the Wachowski's need something to keep busy while their taking longer to make 2 movies than Peter Jackson is taking to make 3.
If Lucas wanted to steal from the Wachowski's he would release the 2nd disk from the Ep. 2s DVD in a separate package.---------------------------------------------------
And on the main subject of Cartoon network, I was gonna' complain about why some shows were coming back (Home Movies?), and why some don't get the play they deserve( Sealab2021, HARVEY BIRDMAN A.a.L.) but it seems every show has it's haters and fans so I guess we should be happy to have the variety instead of cookie cutter copies of the same formula.
I'm hoping Clone Wars is good. I'm not sure about the format and hope it's not cardboard cut-out animation like Samui Jack.
My main complaint is the long wait for more Justice League. they couldn't have any more shows sooner? the animation better be way better than the first season if it's gonna' take so long. and why of all the good shows do they keep showing War World?

    RE: CLONE HIGH

Last i heard, Clone High was denounced by hindus over it's disrespectful portrayal of Ghandi. No, i'm not making this up. I don't know if the P.C. cops pulled it off the air yet or not
