Eddie Griffin In San Francisco Premieres Footage From His New Film!!

Published at:  Feb 08, 2003 8:33:41 PM CST

Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab.

Eddie Griffin’s been a busy guy lately, and he’s starting to do some interesting work. I’m supposed to be seeing DYS-FUNK-TIONAL FAMILY soon, and if you’re in San Francisco, then you can peek at his other Miramax film, MY BABY’S MAMA this coming Monday night. The announcement that he’ll be playing Sammy Davis Jr. soon is actually pretty exciting, since he could nail the physical side of the performance without makeup or other distractions, and if the script’s any good, maybe Eddie will finally have a great role to dig into...

Hey Drew~

I spoke with you last December when Frameline welcomed Gus Van Sant for a conversation with Elvis Mitchell, and he previewed his newest film Elephant for the first time anywhere. That event - as well as last week's evening with Tilda Swinton - was an enormous success.

Got another exclusive for you if you are interested. This Monday, February 10, Cheryl Dunye (Watermelon Woman, Stranger Inside) will be discussing her career on the Castro Theatre stage. She has just finished shooting My Baby's Mama with Eddie Griffin (set for September release by Miramax). if any of Eddie's fans want a sneak peek, Cheryl will be showing clips straight from the editing room for the first time anywhere.

The press release with more information about the event is copied below. Please let me know if you need further information or would like send someone to check out the event.

Cheers~

CLOSE-UP: VISIONARIES OF MODERN CINEMA

Director Cheryl Dunye in Discussion with Yvonne Welbon at San Francisco’s Castro Theatre on February 10, 2003

On Feburary 10, Frameline welcomes acclaimed young director Cheryl Dunye for an onstage interview with filmmaker/author Yvonne Welbon (LIVING WITH PRIDE: RUTH ELLIS @ 100), a noted authority on female African American directors. The evening includes an onstage interview, selected clips and career highlights, and a question-and-answer session with the audience, followed by an exclusive dessert reception.

After a series of popular short films, Cheryl burst onto the scene with her acclaimed short THE POTLUCK AND THE PASSION. Dunye won the Teddy Award at the Berlin Film Festival for her feature debut THE WATERMELON WOMAN (1996), a hilarious examination of race, gender and Hollywood history. Dunye stunned audiences again last year with her searing prison drama STRANGER INSIDE (2001), which won top awards at four major gay and lesbian film festivals. She is currently directing the comedy MY BABY’S MAMA with Eddie Griffin for Miramax.

This winter, Frameline presents CLOSE-UP: VISIONARIES OF MODERN CINEMA, six evenings with luminaries of queer film and beyond. The series line-up also includes evenings with producer Christine Vachon, experimental filmmaker Barbara Hammer, and documentarians Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman.

Tickets for each individual program are $12 ($10 for student/senior/disabled). A limited number of tickets are available for $50 that include a private dessert reception with the featured artists following each interview. Tickets are available at www.frameline.org and 925/866.9599.

Thanks, Corey, and if anyone attends this, make sure to drop us a line and let us know how it is!!

    Eddie as Sammy

    by ron2112

I've been a huge admirer of Sammy Davis Jr. for years. I think I own everything that's available by him on CD, every book he's written, and every book that's been written about him. I've often wondered who would be right to play the man in a film. I thought Don Cheadle was a great choice in the Rat Pack film, but his role wasn't as significant as it could have been, and as much as I admire Cheadle, I'm not sure he was the guy for the part after all. Eddie Griffin...hmmm. I think it could work. I can't say I've been tremendously impressed by what little I can remember seeing him in (I *hated* Undercover Brother) but he bears a sufficient resemblance and he's got the energy. That role will be all about the almost manic energy, and the obsessive desire for love and attention. If he can dance and sing on top of that, I say give him the part. Can't wait to be there on opening day.
