Terry Gilliam on... the future of Terry Gilliam! PLUS An Update on what he isn't saying!

Published at:  Feb 05, 2003 2:03:10 PM CST

Hey folks, Harry here... It seems that Terry is moving past the developing stage with THE BROTHERS GRIMM and towards actual physical production. After a bit of checking, they are indeed out to casting on this one. As for Mr Anderson's assertion that two producers are trying to claim ownership on THE DEFECTIVE DETECTIVE - ahem. Children need to learn to play well together, or else there will be no playing at all. THE DEFECTIVE DETECTIVE is hands down one of the best scripts not in production, along with WALLY & PEPPER - actually another project that Gilliam would be fantastic for. Alas... here's Mr Anderson...

It was announced in the trades a few months ago that he was attached to THE BROTHERS GRIMM at MGM. And i have from a reliable source that they are casting. Word is that an actor from the last proj still wants to work with him and is in discussions as one of the leads for this project. Also, Gilliam has been trying to work with Charles Roven who produced 12 Monkeys for him (Roven is also prod Brothers Grimm). They seem to have a good relationship and Gilliam has been attached to several of Roven's projects, including GOOD OMENS, and The Defective Detectective (which from what i understand is stalled over rights issues--2 producers are claiming ownership to the project). GO is stalled in part to lack of funding (it's an expensive movie). Soooo, again, i believe terry's next proj will be Brothers Grimm or something else involved with producer Roven.

mr. anderson

Hey folks, Harry here with a bit on Terry Gilliam... Terry Gilliam is UP to something... What we need from you is the scoop on what it is that Terry Gilliam is up to. We don't want Terry to say, because he seems to have a grapple on the curse that is currently upon him. But that curse doesn't extend to the whole world does it? Well, if it does, maybe we shouldn't know. Maybe it is best for Gilliam to operate in a complete vacuum of worldly attention. Yeah, that's it. If you come across Terry Gilliam doing something, Keep it secret, Keep it safe! Here ya go...

Hey man, You may be interested in an interview with Terry Gillian that just appeared on the Onion.

Some insight into his current projects and more:

O: What's Don Quixote's status? Have you despaired of it, or is it still a possibility?

TG: No, no, the timing is absolutely exquisite. Today, all the relevant parties have been meeting in Paris, to sort out how I get the rights back once and for all. This has been going on for a year and a half, and it's complex, and it's blah blah blah. But today, we're finally in meetings with all the parties. Everybody wants to get it off their hands and get it back to me, but it's just been complex. With any luck, I'll have it back in my grubby little hands shortly. [Laughs.]

O: Do you consider that your current project, or are you working on something else?

TG: There is something else I'm working on, but I refuse to talk about that right now, because every time I mention what I'm doing next, it somehow collapses. So I'm keeping it quiet.

I have been waiting for Terry Gilliam to do something with the surviving Python cast. Hopefully now that La Mancha is pretty much dead, it will be a possibility. I am in agreement with Harry though, please make it the Defective Detective!

If this "project" Terry is working on turns out to be "Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy", fanboys are gonna FREAK.

    Gilliam's Next Project? I know, I know!

    by justinsane

It's THE BROTHERS GRIMM, written by scribe Ehren Kruger (The Ring).

According to reports on Dreams: The Terry Gilliam Fanzine, he's already been scouting locations in Prague (as of December 9th).

    So there you go, Gilliamites.

Gilliam is one of the top five directors but his endings blow

    by darth phallus

There are very few "auteurs" in the directing field where you see their work and you just know who is holding the reins. Kubrick comes to mind, as does Burton, Spielberg. THen there are others who are supremely gifted a la Ridley Scott who commands the camera in new and arresting ways but doesn't nec. have that similarity that carries from project to project. Kinda like the way Jack Nicholson acts. Jack is always great but he's always well, Jack. Gilliamloves his ugly, clumsy futurism, filtered thru the ridiculous and basted with a healthy (or unhealthy depending on your perspective) dose of British humor, hence the piss poor endings to Time Bandits, Brazil and Munchausen. Still, when I look at my DVD collection, Gilliam is one of the few directors where I have collected nearly every thing he's done...so there ya go. Anyway, I'm sure whatever he's working on (damn I wish it was Watchmen) it'll end up with the rest of his works in between my nifty Argonath bookends I got last year when I bought the LOTR EXT.
Speaking of Tolkien, why does Harry now pepper all of his writings with Tolkienisms-tricksy, keep it secret keep it safe, etc.? OH yea, and where's the Catch Me if You Can review?

So there. Nyaaa. Fear & Loathing is tied for my favorite Gilliam film, along with Time Bandits, a movie that's sparked my imagination as long as I've known it to exist. He's my favorite filmmaker, and I can't wait for the Criterion DVD of F&L to hit the stores! Woohoo! The man can do no wrong when it comes to the stories he chooses to tell... now, it's about time we got something new from him.

    by zenda

I saw "Lost in La Mancha" and was so happy he couldn't make that dreadful film! Don Quixote is one of the great stories in literature. No one needs to be screwing it up with a time traveling accountant ending up as Sancho Panza. If he wants to make Don Quixote, let him make that story. We don't need him to spruce it up any.

Lord Shatner...you misunderstood Fear and Loathing

    by roger thornhill

If you've read Hunter Thompson's masterpiece than you would know that it is probably one of the most difficult books to adapt to film. Gilliam achieved the unthinkable, a film that is true to the spirit of Thompson's work. Indeed, the entire opening of the film is almost verbatim to the book. Few directors could bring such a difficult book to filmic life. Imagine if Brett Ratner had his hands on it? Oh jeez, what a pile of crap that would turn out to be. But Gilliam, the eccentric genius that he is, managed to make a wildly funny (and intelligent) comedy. The cinematography is breathtaking with Gilliam's trade mark wide angle lenses used for virtually every shot. Additionally, the performances are superb. Depp has never acted better. Benicio should have won his Oscar for Fear and Loathing. That the film was virtually ignored by the public and despised by critics is rather disconcerting since it is truly an original film to come out of Hollywood. But wait, isn't that an oxymoron because nothing original comes out of Hollywood? Nope, not when you have a true auteur like Gilliam behind the lense. Which brings me to another point...what is the deal with these Hollywood fake auteurs? I mean on Rush Hour 2 the title reads "A Brett Ratner film." What style does he have? None! He shoots everything conventionally and by the numbers. No original style. I mean it'd be fine if his movies were actually good, but they all tend to be banal. Ron Howard shoots everything conventionally but he often makes good films like Apollo 13 and Backdraft (I must say I enjoy Willow as a guilty pleasure). But Brett Ratner? Rush Hour 1 and 2 may be amusing, but it's hard to get past the fact that every joke has to do with racial stereotypes. Oh well. Give Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas another chance, you may begin to see its brilliance.

    Brazil = Best Ending Ever

    by t bone

Just my opinion, obviously, but the last twenty minutes of Brazil are like being in one of those test dummy cars, riding superfast on the euphoria of love, capture, escape, loss, etc. Then you hit the wall and find out whether you fix your face into the steering wheel brackets, or go out the windshield into the bricks. When I first saw that torture chamber, my jaw dropped, and stayed that way for half an hour

    "He's gone"

Tomorrow is another day, but morning found me miles away...BRAZIL!
