Hey Harry, first time/long time…
I just got back from a screening of Dreamworks' "Old School" in New York's Loews Lincoln Center. You'll likely be flooded with reviews, but here's mine complete with a spoiler-free version.
Spoiler Free: The film is funny! Will Ferrell is one funny mo-fo and he achieves near Belushi-esque silliness here. If you want originality, try Emo Phillips. If you want a good story, impressive cinematography or 'good clean fun,' look elsewhere. If you're looking for a solid, gross-out, sex joke filled frat flick, this is IT!
Here come the spoilers:
Old School seems to set out in search of the good old days of Porky's, Animal House and even Revenge of the Nerds. Here and there, the gags really hit their marks, but mostly it feels like you've seen them all before. Still, they are pretty funny.
The story starts off with Mitch (Luke Wilson) finding out that his girl (Juliet Lewis) enjoys a good gang-bang while he's away. So he moves out and scores a big house on the outskirts of a college campus. Horny married friends (Will Ferrell and Vince Vahn) convince him to turn the place into a party pad. Soon, they are sort of forced to decide between starting a frat house or leaving the premises. With a bunch of misfit recruits (similar to Fight Club's space monkeys) they get crazy and silliness ensues.
There's plenty of nudity here. Much of it, you may not like considering that it comes from mostly men, unless that's your bag. We get the odd breast flash as well. Something that was fairly clever was first being given a hot ass to drool over then being informed in the following scene that it belongs to a high school chick who's also the boss's daughter.
Cameos from Snoop Dogg and Andy Dick make for some memorable moments. There's a bunch of defy-the-odds type hijinx and the assholes get killed in the end. All, as it should be.
Anyway, as I said, the story is crap and they don't reinvent the wheel either. But the gags are silly enough to be funny and frequent enough to be worthy of a pay-per-view at the very least. Maybe even a rental.
If you use this…call me…um,…I don't know…just don't call me late for dinner… or something.

I hate sitting in a theater and people actually laugh at shit trailers like the one to Old School. "Will Ferrel is getting drunk. Wait a minute, I get drunk, too! That's hilarious!", and much audience laughter ensues.

Normally I stay away from these kinds of flicks, but the trailer seriously cracked me up, especially Farrell doing his little interpretive dance with the ribbon and Vaughn smoking while on the rings (WTF?).

Are they putting this guy in films & on TV to piss people off or does someone out there actually think he's funny? Maybe those who continually use Grando & black lightsabers in their posts like him. I would actually watch a reality show if it let people beat Andy Dick w/ blunt objects.

I'm really looking forward to OLD SCHOOL, but what I really want to know is when a studio is going to give Ferrell the go ahead to make his RON BURGUNDY, ACTION NEWSMAN script that he wrote with fellow SNL scribe Adam McKay. Moriarty ran a script review of it on this site a while ago that made it sound hilarious. McKay did some great short films on SNL with Ferrell, "The Doberman" and "The Baby and the German Intellectual". I've probably written on this site about this movie 10 times, and will continue to do so until they make this movie already. Or at least until someone makes the script available online.

Unless of course, they're enrolled as PhD candidates. Don't we have enough baby boomers trying to act young and 'hip'? We need a movie that'll encourage them to do so even more?

First, there are no penises visible in this movie, though they are referenced for a gag or two (pun intended). Second, there is little FEMALE nudity, though what little we see is pretty good quality. Third, this movie is not about old guys acting young. The gags take place at a wedding, one of their kids birthday parties, et cetera. Fourth, if you don't see it because you're a prick who thinks he knows exactly what's going to happen in it from seeing the trailer, that's your lose. I really don't give a shit. I watched it for free and had some good laughs. If it tanks, so be it.

If I were black I would be insulted by films like Holloween 8 and every other horror and martial arts film that diliberately features Rappers to get me to go... Steven Seagal wouldn't still have a career if it weren't a reality that his fanbase seems to be predominantly black, hence the black and or rapper sidekicks in ALL his films and his wanna be black vibe that makes him, at age 50, even more ridiculous than ever.
