Tons of Info On CATWOMAN!!!

Published at:  Jan 19, 2003 3:32:32 AM CST

Hey folks, Harry here... Well yesterday, the tiny tidbits i had on Catwoman made the film seem like it was revisionist, but at least fun... That posting prompted the following poor unfortunate soul to write in with her terrible experience reading this travesty. Here ya go....

Harry, dahlink... It is I, the original Selina Kyle and baby, I have read the CATWOMAN script.  I see news is trickling out, so it isn't even a secret anymore that this project is actually getting off the ground.  Which is terrible!  Terrible, dahlink, because THIS SCRIPT IS AWFUL.  INCOMPETENT.  And EVERYONE KNOWS IT.  Especially Warner Bros.  But so much money has been sunk into it, it just Has To Happen. You know dear, it is one of those embarrasing trainwrecks with suicidal conductors, we poor passengers, we'll be the ones trapped in the burning wreckage of their carelessness.

Warner Brothers has been scrounging around for co-financing because they are not very confident in this project, even tho they are pushing for it to be made so much.  I guess they found a sucker. After all dahlink, wasn't it the dear Mr Barnum that said something or another about them being born every minute.

I suppose I should be the one to break it to you. Afterall, being the real Catwoman, it was only through my stealth-like slinkability that I was able to penetrate the papersack security of Warner Brothers to give you this report. Essentially, this disaster takes place on the West Coast, and it's not Selena Kyle, blah blah blah, except basically, it is.  This is a story of a frumpy frustrated woman who uncovers corruption at the company she works for, is murdered as a result, but magically embued with the powers of The Cat, and uses them to unlock a feminist side to her, as well as take revenge on her murderers.  Sound familiar???  Except this script has an awful 126 pgs to get it all out, while BATMAN RETURNS did the Catwoman storyline just as a subplot, and it was MUCH MUCH SLEEKER. Can you imagine taking 126 pages to spit out the origin. Remember the writer's axiom of, "Keep It Simple Stupid?" Baby, these pinheads sure as hell didn't.

Now, Dahlink, just in case you think there was no innovation in the script, no originality and no vitality, there's more.  THIS TIME, the Catwoman part of Patience is ANOTHER PERSONALITY.  She has no control over it when it comes over her.  WOW, WHAT A GREAT CHOICE TO MAKE.  Never mind that the Catwoman character was all about being a dynamic risk taking woman who chose to be a criminal because stealing was DELICIOUS, not psychotic. Oh and if that wasn't enough, her cat powers come from some stupid fucking magic Egyptian cat she adopts at the animal shelter.  Wow, how much did it cost for that revision?  The Catwoman thing is like a vampire thing, I think it only comes out at night (I kinda skimmed as the thing was really boring).  And the detective guy is boring as hell. Not nearly as inspired as your description yesterday.

This is a bad bad bad script.  I can get you more details if you're interested, if you haven't read it already, dahlink.

Selina Kyle

Meanwhile, across the world wide web, I get this report about Warner Brothers desperately seeking the opinion of others on what to do with their CATWOMAN movie... sigh... typical...

Hey Harry,

First time writer and this may not be huge information, but I take
surveys from a particular website. In the one I just received it was
primarily about a movie called "The Wedding Party" with Michael Douglas
and Albert Brooks, from Warner Bros, they asked me a variety of questions
about it and when I was done they said they would ask about another
movie. The first question they ask is "Are you familiar with a movie
called Catwoman starring Halle Barry?" I replied no, because I wasn't
familiar, at least not with Halle Barry. So, I went on and these are the
questions that were there that I have pasted on to this e-mail.

Halle Berry stars in CATWOMAN...

A frumpy, timid accountant at a glamorous cosmetics company is murdered
when she accidentally uncovers a corporate scandal. She is magically
brought back to life and reborn as "Catwoman," a sexy, take-charge woman
with cat-like skills and temperament who doesn't play by the rules. Now
she must battle these dual personalities while keeping her identity
secret and solving the mystery of her own murder. Did her tyrannical
former boss have her killed because she knew too much? Along the way, she
falls for the young, handsome detective who is chasing the mysterious and
mischievous "Catwoman."

Now, based on this description, which phrase best describes how
interested you would be in seeing this movie if it were playing at a
theater near you?

Several other actresses are being considered for the lead role in
Catwoman. Which actress do you feel would be best for this role?

Halle Berry

Jennifer Garner

Reese Witherspoon

Renee Zellweger

Nicole Kidman

Ashley Judd

Jennifer Lopez

Cameron Diaz

Seems like WB is moving along and with more actresses in mind, I put in
my vote for Judd.

Anyway thought this may be of interest.

Sincerely,

Eric

she's done interviews about it and everything.

and if they're going with a whole new story, by the way, shouldn't they not rehash the same thing from batman returns with the whole, did her employer try to murder her?? it'd be better if patience was, oh, obsessed with selina kyle or something. don't just do a half-assed remake of what burton did awesomely (didn't think much of the first one, but the 2nd nailed it for me anyway) that's disconnected to the predecessor...

no matter what, pitof will still make it visually interesting, anyway.

  • While I think BR is a much better flick than the first one (its got all of its style, but with alot more substance) and better performances, what keeps in my head in that flick is Michelle Pfeiffer. She's basically the reason I love that movie. And I'm not talking in a "I wanna bang her till her head falls off" kind of way (though, yeah, that may be a part of it too) its mainly because she just sesaws between confused and crazy so well and can't seem to stop. Her scene where she's going to confront Shreck at the costume party is tense, dramatic, evil and tragic all at once. Great, great, performance. Blows Jack Nicholson out of the water and back into the Cukoo's nest.

A: Cameron Diaz. Good actress, but overexposed and a bonerack. Sorry, but I believe Catwoman needs to give that tight, black leather some curves! B: Jennifer Garner. Yet another bonerack. Even though she can definitely kick some ass, she's already playing Elektra in Daredevil. C: Jennifer Lopez. If they cast her, I won't even bother to see the film. I FUCKING DESPISE Jennifer Lopez! Here's hoping "J-Lo" doesn't go Mariah Carey after Ben Affleck has humped on her enough and inevitably kicks her to the curb! Memo to Jennifer: check the notches on Ben's belt. You're the next in line, my dear! _______WTF is with the name Patience Price? The character's name is SELINA KYLE. IMO, a much sexier and classier name than this Patience Price bullshit. Sounds like Warner Bros. is screwing the pooch again, just like the whole Batgirl character in the unwatchable Batman & Robin. Alfred's niece, my ass........

Why the consensus that Ashley Judd...

    by silvio dante

would make a good Catwoman? Everybody seems so pleased with this choice. I mean, Eye of The Beholder, Double Jeopardy...everything I seen her in...I'm not gonna say she sucks, I just don't get her style or see the chops and the stuff she's in is always lame, like TV movies in big screen. I just can't see her as Selina...err, Patience Price? At least Halle Berry is athletic. As for other names in that list: Witherspoon, Zellewegger & Lopez are physically wrong, Kidman has proved she can do ANYTHING but somehow I don't believe she's interested and Diaz...well, she's the most catlike in appearence and those eyes...I realize Judd is most likely going to do it, but to me it smacks a bit similar as miscasting Affleck as Murdock. Then again, I don't know this character Price so what am I complaining, it's not THE Catwoman anymore, is it?

  • ... it would have been much, much better if they looked to the Batman: The Animated Series for inspiration. Michelle Pfeiffer was good, but she pales beside the intelligent, slick, and sexy Selina Kyle/ Catwoman voiced by Adrienne Barbeau in episodes like "The Cat and the Claw."

    Source material

    by pseudo

Hasn't anyone at Warners ever realized that they've got a ton of material to take advantage of without "re-imagining" things to death? What's all this mystical mumbo-jumbo nonsense anyway? Don't they realize they've got a strong female character who doesn't feel constrained by ANY of the traditional values of her society? This is a selling point they're completely missing. Marketing pinheads ought to lock themselves into a room with a stack of back issues to see what made the character tic rather than what they're doing now.

That's about the calibre of talent she has, not to mention the total shit projects she accepts. Every fucking interview she's gotta turn into a female empowerment speech like it's 1970. She's got serious penis envy. She started out as a promising actress when she was taking small roles then she went after the big bucks taking anything that offered her the chance to hold a gun or male bash. The whole Judd family can eat it for all I care. Bunch of wackos, the whole lot of them, especially that daffy mom.

well since this is going to be totally shit, can we still not hope that darren aronofsky will decide to keep catwoman in batman: year one, if he ever makes it?

maybe this is why they are calling her patience price or whatever it is, to remove her from the future release of batman year one??

that way they can still have selina kyle as the hooker from the comics who buys a costume after seeing batman in action and learns kung fu as a get rich quick scheme?

She's a female Hugh Grant, just good for rom-coms and films which have "turn your brain off" on the posters in the foyer. Jo-Lo's career is now firmly in the abyss where it belongs. Cameron Diaz can't do mousey if her life depended on it. I do like Renee Zellweger, though. She was awesome in Nurse Betty and can really pull out the stops. I'm not sure that Halle Berry could bring any depth to Patience Price. And Ashley Judd is just a joke.

Well, from the list i would go for Ashley Judd, If new names out of the list I would say we can sure give it a try to the following ladies.

    1. Eliza Duskhu - (She did great leather ni J&S Bob movie)
    2. Liv Tyler
    3. Liz Hurley (will have to change her accent to american one though)

Dont they always say that the first movie of a super hero/villian is always difficult as it has to be an origin story and nothing else, well havent we already covered catwoman origin in batman returns which may not be the best one, but still it serves the purpose. Should the movie catwoman move on to a better story then this current one.

Am i only one who remembers catwomen was a burgular, likes to steal expensive things, they even showed her doing it in batman returns.

If this movie comes out i dont think life will be worth living anymore..... Why must Hollywood
take a good idea and $%^$ it up? They take the information that an Iceland immigrant might
know about Catwoman and wrote a script on that! They should read and watch some things and
then write a script not say "Hey Bill I got it, lets make a Catwoman movie" "But Frank are
you sure that could actually be a good movie?" "No here is the best part Bill ill write it by
throwing a large object(shaped like a cat)at the keyboard til its done!" "Will make millions

This kind of sounds like Cat People or something with this Egyptian possession stuff and split personalities. Well not just Cat People, but it wouldn't be so bad if they'd just put a space between "Cat" and "Woman" or maybe stick a "The" at the beginning of the Marquee. Just make sure no one thinks it's the comic book and have fun, can't that work? I mean it's a WB movie, OF COURSE it'll suck. ALL their movies suck. But so long as this isn't a mutilation of the comic book character and another wasted opportunity at adapting a DC title, this could be a nice "original" movie, don't you think?

    by tomvee

"Halle is NOT playing Catwoman. Ashley Judd is and that's a fact."

Judd certainly is preferable to Berry, and Judd can at least act. But to my thinking Catwoman should be basically a Catgirl. From that perspective Judd is already too old. Berry is younger but unqualified in the acting department. It should be someone in the age range of Buffy or Sabrina, or even younger. No one is going to pay money to see a 30-year-old woman playing a superheroine. The sex appeal ain't there, at least not for the target audience of young males. Estella Warren is the right age and has the looks but like Berry she cannot act her way out of a tissue-thin paper bag.

and it represented WB's directional shift away from good stuff like Hamms draft (albeit flawed) to the campy Waters crap to the eventual Schumacher SHIT. It basically marked when the WB lost their mind about their franchise characters (greatest characters in a franchise other than disney) with the slight exception of guys like Dini who will never be given real power because they lack the industry power (i.e. good coke dealers) of guys like Peters. So the various DC franchises will be pissed intot he ground while Marvel LUCKS OUT and has actual good writers and directors doing their stuff ( I still believe not due to any great vision but just luck that guys like Ang Lee, Sam Raimi Singer and Norrington are into the characters and hot to do films the right way. Until Alex Proyas signs on for Batman with Christian Bale or Guy Pearce playing the part, piss off because it's more likely we'll get Michael Bey and Ashton Kusher(?) out of DC... Hey all i am new to the forum, so dont get all mad at me cause its my first time writing. Ok i have a problem with Halle Berry playing Catwomen. Ok ok she is hotttt and has a nice body and actually can act, but if they were going for a black girl why did they over look Janet Jackson(this is where you get mad). Ok Janet hasnt mad to many films but she is a great actress and has a smokin body(if any of you saw her "All for you Tour check out the "Would you Mind outfit) And if you havent seen it go check it out cause Janet wears a catwomen like outfit in one of the songs. I just think she would be awsome in the movie, give someone else a chance for a movie Halle. Thanks and peace out all.

And as much as I think Nicole would be great for this role, I don't want her touching this project if it's gonna turn out as bad as Ms. Kyle says. Nicole is really coming into her own as a dramatic actor right now. She just won the GG for The Hours, which is superb in. She's starring in upcoming films from both Anthony Minghella and Lars Von Trier. I think that starring in a crappy WB Batman spin-off may not be in her best interest, and I imagine she would feel the same. But Jennifer Lopez?!? And man, despite her good turn in the fantastic Monster's Ball, I really hate Halle Berry's guts. She's ugly, stupid, and annoying. I hope this project's problems get at least somewhat ironed out, but I don't have a lot of hope. Dual personalities? Fuck...

    Michelle P IS CATWOMAN!!!

    by generalzoddd

I agree with what The Tall Man said up above - Michelle Pfiffer (whatever) IS Catwoman. What the hell is wrong with Warner Brothers? Why don't they wake up? The character of Catwoman in Batman Returns was THE most interesting chacacter in genre filmmaking of the 90's. This isn't anything to do with the genius of having a woman with a latex costume carrying a whip - The fact that she is so compelling was partly due to the brilliant script work by Daniel Waters BUT also due the to work that Michelle put into the film. Because Warners have sat on their asses for so long they now worry that Michelle is to old? You know what? She is still one of the most beautiful women around AND her features fit the charcter so well. She can look incrediably fragile one second and switch to indestructable in a blink of an eye. She has already GOT the character down, and we already HAVE her origin - AND she got away at the end of the movie which was totally correct for the sequel. Which never came. Instead we got "Batman Forever' and 'Batman And Robin". Thanks for that Warners. And now they are about to F*ck up 'Catwoman' too. Yes I've read the script. 1st change - get it back to Selina Kyle. If you have to cast another actress so be it - but at least keep the character which was so good already.

I'm so annoyed I've got to go away now and watch a Marvel film - because they know to be faithful to what the audience base wants and expects.

    GeneralZoddd!

  • Hey WB. You are planning to re-start Batman with year 1, why in the world would you want to tie a new Catwoman film to the old movies?___This is your chance to actually do THE REAL Catwoman, not the zombie who stole her name in Batman Returns.___Burn this script and get a screenwriter that understands that this movie should be a CAPER FILM. Catwoman is A CAT-BURGLER, not a post-modern feminist out to bring down Corporate America. Sheesh. How hard is this for you morons to figure out?___Oh, one more thing, set the movie IN GOTHAM CITY!___Assholes.

    Rebecca Romijn-Stamos for cat woman

    by ignatz

She kicked ass as mystique and scince she had all that makeup people won't mind seeing her in another hero flick so soon. Scrap that crap script, use Jim Lee's costume design (michelle pfifer's is cool but belongs with michelle) and try to remember her name is Selina Kyle, she has black hair and likes to steal for the thrill of it.

    Banshee you idiot

    by generalzoddd

You are obviously a 20 something Warner exec thinking he come come onto the talkback and save his whiney mis-informed partied-out ass by shouting out misinformation which backs up what the piece-of -crap script you are going with sets out to achieve. Yes you'll get your totally new Catwoman and a 'interesting' heist caper and you'll get Ashley Judd who you forgot to say how 'Hot' and 'Young' and 'a great actress' she is - but I guess you'll get around to that in a later post.
Just because we are fanboys doesn't mean we're idiots. By the way I'm normally very polite on these Talkbacks but you sir, have pissed me off - go away and haunt the Charlie Sheen homepage or something - at least your intellegent insight will be at home there. thank you. General Zoddd

    This scripts plotline...

    by ignatz

...should clearly be set in the 80's. Give them all big, big hair and shoulder pads and cast Ice-T as the detetive trying to save Price from herself, oh and don't forget to have Heart on the soundtrack. By the way Berry shouldn't be in super hero flicks as far as I can tell maybe she'll do a better storm this time, but she really stunk up the screen on the last go. I like zellwegner even less. I always pictured catwoman as looking more like Betty Page. Start up the infernal ressurection machine damn it!

Yea right. Halle Berry will want to do this...

    by steal_dragon

The only actress I can see accepting this role is and was Ashley Judd. If she accepted to do the Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood, she would do this.

Ashley Judd and Divine Secrets ...

    by glawen

and considering how much of a crock of Southern horseshit that film was, it makes me wonder if the woman actually reads any of the scripts before she signs on the dotted line.

GeneralZoddd, I'm not sure I understand your point...

    by banshee

Are you saying you like the Catwoman from Batman Returns? Because that wasn't Catwoman anymore than the character in this new script.___And while I do think Ashley Judd is very attractive, she isn't Catwoman. For that matter no one on that list is. If Catherine Zeta Jones were younger I would cast her, but since she's not I would probably go with someone like Jessica Alba.___And no, I am not a WB exec. Although I wish I were because maybe I could keep them from destroying thier characters.

    why even bother making this.....?

    by tactical badger

Catwoman is pretty interesting but only when she goes up against Batman in Batman's world.

Let's applaud the genius who decides to remove her from that world and make her the centre of the film - most people know something about the hero/villainess so let's totally screw that over by interfering heavily with the character.
Superhero films were big last year and will be bigger this year - Catwoman will be the stinker that ends the stream of well-made comicbook hero movies.

That said, if they pour Eliza Dushku into a skin tight PVC catsuit and keep her on screen for 2 hours - I don't care! 'Bring it on'!

it's intersting that everyone is lining up to shoot down wb just because they've neglected to let the fanboys write a movie script for them ,when in six months time we will all be praising them for giving us the best matrix sequel possible.wb dared to take a risk with that film and it paid off, maybe you guys should all remember that when you're watching charlie's angels 2 (jeez). btw, when the schumacher batmans were released i was a kid, early teens when batman and robin came out, and i loved them. i dont think they're so hot now, far from it, but these films ARE AIMED AT KIDS. i didnt wanna say it, but i think i had to. if they weren't, dont you think shit like x-men n spiderman would be r-rated rather than pg-13 or watever? wb knows that, and knows the kids are gonna enjoy it no matter what - despite the strong showing of lord of the rings at the box office, the obsessive geek fanbase does not make up a large proportion of a film's audience. when was a big blockbuster EVER not about money? if you want these films, make your own for christ's sake. i expect to be highly bombarded with replies telling me how wrong i am...oh well.

    a movie for kids?

    by tactical badger

You cannot defend a sucky movie by saying "it is a kid film". Or the content was trimmed back for a younger audience. The later batman movies were just plain bad. Compare them to the animated TV series which has style and class and is true to the original vision - Batman Forever was pure cheese!
Catwoman sounds like it will be another no-brainer waste of time.

    by generalzoddd

Thanks for that Banshee, I'm glad your being a gentleman, even if I'm not. I apologize for being rude (but hey I could have been worse and called you a Disney Exec!). My point was that the 'Batman Returns' Catwoman - even though being far from the character in the comic books (and I'm talking original 60s- 80s Catwoman in the comics and T.V to the Catwoman in Batman:Year One and Catwoman Limited Series 1-4), she was still a fantastic re-imagining of the character. If you remember the early debate over the Superman script here, everyone was up in arms about "how dare they change Superman?" but it became clear that there are lots of different Superman variations. Everyone had their 'beloved' version which they were going to fight to protect and champion to the screen - and Harry, who has been collecting 'Superman' comics since before he was born spoke up with a 'but Superman has changed thoughtout the eras. - He gets recreated and reborn every once in a while' - so I guess this is whats happening with Catwoman. BUT my point was that Selina Kyle in 'Batman Returns' was such a compelling character, truely an original uninhibited character and pschologically complex - that it was madness not to persue this one in the spin-off Catwoman movie. The origin of this Price character is far to similar to Selina's in BAtaman Returns whilst the personality is weak. And the protagonist is non-existant.

    by claws

I swear if their was anyone looking for the real Catwoman
look-a-like it would be Catherine Zeta Jones. She has it
all! The figure, the hair and the same facial fitures. I can't even watch her movies anymore without thinking she is sooooo Selina Kyle it's not funny. Waner Brothers look no further!

    bitter orgin!

    by claws

I think the comicook orgin for Catwoman is much more realistic
and better than the supose "Catwoman" movie orgin.
The only thing that didn't seem
right was the whole whore thing.
I'm mean through out the comicbooks Catwoman hated being under anyone's control. She never took orders or shit from anyone including Bane. It just doesn't make sense that she allow herself be treated that way. Even before then she didn't take from the orphange mistress or her abusing husband. Somebody mess up when they wrote up that orgin.
