An Early Look At The DAREDEVIL Movie Novelization Review!

Published at:  Jan 16, 2003 5:38:04 AM CST

Hey folks, Harry here... Miss Edith here has been given a peek into the future and has read a novelization that is very close it sounds to the screenplay I've read. And yes, Miss Edith understands just how badass this film could be, as I've been saying for a while now. It's all in the execution now, I've got my fingers crossed... If it works, it'll be the toughest and meanest Superhero film since THE CROW...

Hi Harry~

Long time reader, first time sender, blah blah blah.

I picked up the novelization of "Daredevil" today and thought I'd send my thoughts to you on it and the casting. Will write this in a non-spoilery, spoilery and then casting thoughts format. If you use this anywhere, call me Miss Edith.

NONSPOILERY:

Bottom line - at times the book smacked of how Spiderman's arc unfolded, particularly with a scene where young Daredevil discovers the depths of his augmented senses/powers.

But where Spiderman stays mostly heroic and on the straight and narrow - "With great power comes great responsibility" - Daredevil takes a gritty, unflinching look into the notions of right and wrong and how justice is best served. (Answer: Cold.)

Fight scenes are amazingly well-written and should play out awesome on screen. After reading this book, I'm particularly dying to see the first fight between Matt and Elektra - plays off more sexy in the book - and then the fight between Elektra and Bullseye - lethal to the max. A tricksy one, Bullseye is.

Just questions: How Daredevil's sensitive hearing will be portrayed on screen. Depends on how they do it, but it could become distracting, rather than filling out the role.

Good moments: Matt's father's last fight, the Matt-Elektra fight, the ball, and a scene on a plane with Bullseye. (Bullseye ROCKS.)

The ending is fittingly poignant and powerful and leaves the door open for the future.

SPOILERS:

As I said - it appears revenge and justice are best served cold. The question, sometimes, is where the distinction between the two is.

Daredevil takes on a mob goon that was acquitted of the rape of a client of Matt Murdoch's in a bloody fight that leaves a whole biker bar full of broken and shot bodies, ending with causing the goon to be run over by a train.

He runs to save a child from being hit by a drunken father and beats the father so severely the child sees no difference between this man who would serve justice and the father who has abused him. Neat? Tidy? No. Justice? For us to decide.

It is, as other sources have said, a gritty look into the depths of what a superhero is. Daredevil does indeed take pain pills - opting for Vicodin after a tough night. He sleeps in a sensory deprivation chamber. It's what life in the "real world" would be like for a superhero.

CASTING:

I don't know all of them off the top of my head, but I think the movie is well-cast.

Ben Affleck proved in "Dogma" he can do drama and a relatively physical role. (I'm thinking particularly of the slaughter at the church there.) He's got the proverbial chin for the role and appears to have the physicality as well.

Jennifer Garner is the one I have the most problem with - but purely from the standpoint that she is supposed to be the daughter of a Greek tycoon. She just doesn't have the "ethnic" look I had envisioned for the casting of Elektra. But her martial arts prowess, I think, will more than make up for her not fitting the look I had in my head.
The movie novelization is written with Michael Clarke Duncan in the role of

Kingpin, of course, but I don't think I could envision anybody having the size and presence to fill the role nearly as well. It'll be interesting to see a more lethal aura from the man who has so often played the "gentle giant."

Colin Farrell - Mmm. This should be an amazing role for him. The shots I've seen already show a good physicality, and he seems to be able to play lethal and funny just as well.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

Daredevil may not have the widespread name recognition among the general population that Spiderman did, but this is an awesome look at a different side of superheros. As the intro to the book says, not ones with Spidey sense or mutant powers - one who just does the best he can with what he has. The book appears to be a good sign of things to come. Now I hope it all pays off.

Thanks!

Miss Edith

I can understand changing the costumes (although Black leather is getting a bit old now guys try and show a bit more imagination) but changing the Kingpin so dramatically is just so crummy it`s untrue.

I was never a big fan of DD growing up, but I'm getting really syked here. That latest trailer knocked me on my ass; I must have watched it 10 times in a row. Looks like a pretty filling appetizer to HULK & X2. I DO think that HULK will be the best of the 3 (I already have the 13" raging HULK movie toy standing on top of my TV; definitely the best-looking Hulk toy ever made).

Maybe D.D. can slice a double D in his opponents shirts w/ a sword. It'd be like Zorro in Red. Seriously people, are we comparing this to the Crow because of the burning logo on the ground maybe??? I can't wait to hear Kevin Smith praising this film just because of Affleck & his cameo. I bet it's frickin' hilarious too! Right! Don't get me wrong people the comic's epic, the film will suck.

Number one, it's a semi-well known comic book, not like Tank Girl, Barb Wire, or the Crow....when something has that big of a name, they go PG-13 at the most. Number two, they'll never get rid of all the action figures if kiddies can't go to the theatres. I haven't seen any yet, but rest assured there will be some Kingpin poseables out there soon.

    by youareacrybaby

First of all, I am tired of reading all of these whiners complain about how film-makers are ruining their favorite property by changing a small plot point. Batmans rubber nipples? Nipples or not, Shumacher's Batman still would have sucked! Organic webshooters didn't take anything away from what was a entertaining film, neither did the X-Mens' uniforms, or Rogues age. I just find it amusing that so many people can bash a movie before it comes out and six monthes later, praise the hell out of it! And for those who still say the movie sucked after it comes out, we all know you own every edition of it on DVD. And the point of casting Michael Clarke Duncan as The Kingpin was to stay realistic to the character. Sure he's a few shades darker than in the comics, but who else with the size and acting ability are you gonna find that is white also? John Goodman? Be realistic kids, these these subtle little changes do not change the way a film is going to be. It all lies in the writer, director, and actors hands, so quit your crying, get our comic adaptions and novelizations, bash the movie some more, and I'll see you in line. Later, PATC

Also, I don't get why Matt Murdock isn't a DA if he has such a drenchful thirst for vengeance. I know he picks his clients by listening to their heartbeats to see if they are lying or not, but liars pass the lie detector test all the time. What if Catherine Tramell comes into his office, and wants him to defend her. All she has to do is sit down, lie through her teeth, and show off her puss while doing that leg crossing thing. If she could pass the lie detector test in "Basic Instinct" she could pass Matt Murdock's hearing.

    Reasons for Daredevil flack...

    by poopsmcgee

...from what I can gather: a)MCD as the Kingpin ("He's white, not black, get it right!") b)Jennifer Garner as Elektra ("She's Greek, not Garner, get it right!") c)Ben Affleck as Daredevil ("I HATE BEN AFFLECK! RARGHH! TALKBACKERS SMASH!") Personally, I think you guys just have a mad-on against Affleck (he bangs J-Lo and we're stuck with the plump Goth chick who works at the coffee house and smells kinda funny) and any comic-book movie that isn't word-for-word and panel-for-panel. Anybody who didn't think "Spider-Man" was a fun action-adventure film is either high on some new form of cocaine, hates their parents, or can't figure out how to jerk off properly. If you guys don't want to watch "Daredevil," that's fine. But I dare you to give some reasons why other than the three listed above.

Of course the novelisation reads like the script.

    by cash bailey

Novelisations are written FROM the script, as opposed to the finished film. Even hack jobs like these take months to write, so they can't afford to let the author wait around to see the film. The best example of this is probably the novelisation of JAWS 2, which has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING in common with the finished film. Not to mention Steven Spielberg's own novelisation of CLOSE ENCOUNTERS. A book he didn't write from a film he didn't write.

    by buzz maverik

He's just faking it. In the comic book, Daredevil is blind. Affleck doesn't even have radar sense, would die if he jumped off a building and probably can't outfight more than one guy at a time unless they're really weak.

Just wondering, with the special effects used to make people look hobbit size in LOTR, couldn't they have made a man look Kingpin size? As for the Affleck bashing, I can't stand him either. However, it looks like there is MUCH more wrong w/ this film than just his playing D.D. You can hate the guy but I'm pretty sure you can't blame just him for how SHITTY THE MOVIE'S GOING TO BE. Guys, please do everyone a favor and cut the shit. I like comic book adaptations (if done well) as much as the next guy, but can anyone give one good reason people other than Daredevil fans are going to go out of their way to see this flick? I mean, the trailers make Daredevil look like some cheap-ass action movie on HBO Thursday Night Prime. Playing "Bodies" by Drowning Pool does not a good premise for a comic movie make. Yes, there will be the 19 year old girls that will see it for Ben, but I don't think they'll wanna see a comic book movie. Face it, if Spider-Man didn't become as big as it did, this would not have been made. I can only hope people will like this, but I'd be lying if I said that from the trailers I've seen I was the least bit impressed. And one more thing, where is the advertising? It's all online. I haven't seen one tv ad. The movie's coming out next month and there's jackshit for publicity. That doesn't help things.

Who gives a fuck if Kingpin is black? For fuck's sake you bunch of uneducated idiots, it's called creative license. Name one white actor who could have the right physical presence to play Kingpin......I'm waiting.....still waiting.......time is up! COuldn't find one could ya? THe only person that I could even consider would be Butterbean. And Butterbean is a boxer! He's no actor! Michael Clark Duncan is an Oscar nominated actor who has not only the talent but also has the physical presence to really dominate the film as the bad guy. As for you racist fucks, I don't care if Kingpin is black. ALl I care is that the movie doesn't suck.
    'nuff said!

    Reply to Talkback

  • There's is no ACTOR wih the physical presence that Micheal Clarke Duncan has. If you were alone in a room with him and didn't know who he was and he just stared at you, you'd wet your pants. And whoever mentioned John Goodman you're an idiot. Although he's a pretty good actor, he wouldn't be able to do this role. If you notice he's always doing comedy roles and he doesn't have as much muscle mass as Michael Clarke Duncan. And as far as Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner are concerned. When i first heard Ben was playing the I was a bit reserved. He's done good movies in the past, One's I enjoy, but nothhing stellar. Once i saw the previews I was like "Aww shit! I have to see it"(i was gonna see it anyway just because it's Daredevil, grew up reading that comic). And as far as Jennifer Garner. Who cares if she's not Greek. Not everything can be done according to the comic book. Besides she's hot and she can handle all the action sequences.. like Elekra. And i'm reserved about Colin Farrel, only because he did that stupid pound his fist in palm of hand in Minority Report.. LAME!!. We shall see how good this movie will be. I predict it won't do as good as Spider-Man but will certainly rank up those sweet sweet dollars!! -Flailingnuts
