Updated!! Timothy Spall Cast For HARRY POTTER 3'!

Published at:  Jan 14, 2003 6:46:20 PM CST

Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab.

I can’t run the e-mail I got from today’s source, because it would tie him to other scoops from the past (which were 100% accurate, btw), so I’ll just repeat the salient detail:

Timothy Spall has been cast as Peter Pettigrew for HARRY POTTER & THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN.

I made the mistake earlier of saying it was Professor Lupin he was playing, so the TalkBackers below aren't crazy. At least, not more crazy than normal. As fans of the series know, Pettigrew is also called Wormtail, and Spall is a hell of a choice for him. If you’re not familiar with Spall’s work, shame on you. He’s one of those character actors who can go from hilarious to heartbreaking in one quick move, and right now, you can see him in Doug McGrath’s wafer-thin but enjoyable NICHOLAS NICKELBY. He’s a welcome addition to the world of POTTER, and should do a great job with Wormtail. Add him to the ensemble that includes Gary Oldman and Michael Gambon (both of whom are still rumored to be joining the cast, and who appear to be close to confirmation by the studio), and it’s obvious that Alfonso Cuaron is putting together a great cast for his first time at-bat with this franchise.

"Moriarty" out.

He was awesome in Vanilla Sky... but I'm not sure about him as Lupin. I still like Quint's idea for Ewan better... we'll see I guess.

    Ah, Timothy Spall...

    by schnorbitz

Secrets and Lies, TOpsy Turvy, Shooting the Past, All Or Nothing (didn't like that one so much), one episode of Red Dwarf (Back to Reality). He's an absolutely superb actor, but I had in mind someone thinner for Lupin. Someone who could (SPOILER) turn into a werewolf more easily. In his case, it would be a rather plump werewolf. (END SPOILER) It would be nice to have had someone really interesting and different, who could portray the heart of gold. Chiwetel Ejiofor in 15 years' time, perhaps.

Timothy Spall is a good choice

    by capital6us

He was great in all or nothing. Even though I dont like Topsy Turvy, but he played a very good role. I like the Harry Potter movies and I also like this choice.

    No confirmations from WB

    by bkdelong

Gambon and Oldman have not been confirmed by WB yet - hell, there's about 5-6 people rumored for Dumbledore.

Why would they cast a relative unknown for a major supporting character when all the other lesser characters are cast as bigger named?

    Doesn't make sense.

Hey, I like Timothy Spall as much as the next man . . .

    by rain_dog

But I'm not sure I've ever heard of a worse casting decision in my life. Lupin, the tall, thin, apparently quite good-looking werewolf, played by Timothy Spall who is, let's be fair, short, tubby, and a victim of the ugly stick. I'm not saying the movie will suck, because after the lacklustre first two I'm not sure I care enough, but this is . . . interesting to say the least. Maybe he's actually playing Wormtail, which would make sense. Since Rowling seems to have a great deal of creative control over these movies, for better or worse, I'm finding it a bit hard to believe she'd allow someone to be cast in a lead role who so clearly looks nothing like her descriptions of the character. Oh, and Harry, wasn't that Michael Gambon rumour debunked?

    Rimmer couldn't swim!

    by purple prole

Yeah Spall was brilliant in Vanilla Sky, even with the small role he had. He's one of those actors who can always make an impact even if he's only on screen for a short while. The finest example of this being his turn in the best ever episode of 'Red Dwarf'. Goddam that was funny.

PROOF that things CAN go right in Hollywood.

    by the grin

I remember saying, after "Secrets and Lies" came out... "Timothy Spall is one of the best screen actors working today, but he'll never be known to American audiences because he's not glamorous enough or outrageous enough." Thank goodness I have been resoundingly proved wrong. I've never been so happy to have my foot in my mouth. I remember when AICN spread the rumor that he had been cast to play Gimli, and I cheered... although I'm certainly not complaining that it turned out different. Rhys-Davies is brilliant in the role. So it's great that it turns out Spall is landing in the OTHER big fantasy franchise. Now if only somebody would give David Thewlis, that other great veteran of Mike Leigh films, another good role... Sadly, he only made it as far as "Dragonheart" when it comes to movies seen by the general public.

Timothy Spall... Oh right it's HIM

    by pandamaster83

Are you sure it's gonna be Lupin? I never imagined him as Lupin. Then I thought of Peter Pettigrew. He's closer to my image of Wormtail than any1 I can think of, except he'd have brown hair. Sort of sulky and plump.

Clearly, there is an audience here for this stuff, so when you see an HP article, why not just leave well enough alone so all us kiddie-fixated retards can discuss the news without having to listen to you bitch about how it shouldn't be here.

    UGHH...I dont know

    by remfast

I'm sure Mr. Spall is a suberb actor and brings his own degree of depth to the Potter franchise, but...and i must say this seems like a large but...none of the pics online suggest he could look even close to the character as he is described in the book. Sure i understand that if purists had their way with ever detail, no movie would ever get off of the ground, but finding an actor who has the thin...nearly emaciated features that Rowling describes, shouldnt be that difficult. I mean much of the description of Lupin's character suggests he has eaten in some time. I just dont know. Call me crazy, but they could have done better with this one.

    Peter Pettigrew

    by vonnostrom

Perhaps the source accidently put down Lupin instead of Wormtail; if he wasn't into the Harry Potter books he could possibly have put one name instead of the other by mistake. I hope so. I love Timothy Spall's work and all, but I just don't see him as Lupin. But then again I thought Mr. Weasley was gonna be skinny and he was rather plump himself.

I remember hearing some time ago that David Thewlis had been cast in Potter 3. Maybe the source did mix up the character names; maybe Spall is Wormtail, and Thewlis is Lupin. That sounds about right.

I really can't see Spall as Lupin. I always imagined Lupin as thinner than Spall, the same sort of build as Sirius Black. However, he'd make a perfect Wormtail.

Cool news - but who else is sick of the term 'franchise'

    by adandnat

It's so overused lately - because every film coming out seems to be part of a franchise, or people want to make it one.

I was thinking, we need a new title for this sort of film. Super Franchises if you will ...

WalMart is a huge chain, right - not a franchise. So why don't we start the monicker 'Chain Film'. Harry Potter is most certainly more of a chain than a franchise!

From what I saw in the first film, Harry's parents only look about 30 or so. Spall is quite a bit older. Could look weird...although he'd be perfect for the part.

5th Harry Potter book due on June 21

    by nice marmot

LONDON (Reuters) - Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, the fifth book of adventures of the boy wizard by author J.K. Rowling, is due to be published on June 21, its British publisher said on Wednesday. "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is absolutely superb and will delight all J K Rowling's fans. She has written a brilliant and utterly compelling new adventure," Bloomsbury Publishing Plc chief executive Nigel Newton said in a statement. The book, which at 38 chapters and 255,000 words, will be a third longer than the last book -Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire- is also being published by U.S. children's book publisher Scholastic Corp. Fans will have had a three-year wait for Order of the Phoenix. Goblet of Fire was published on Saturday, July 8, 2000 and was the fastest-selling book in history on the first weekend of its publication.
Like Goblet of Fire, Order of the Phoenix is being published on a Saturday, meaning eager fans will not have to miss a day off school or work to buy the new book. By then, most will likely know the first few sentences off by heart. They are: "The hottest day of the summer so far was drawing to a close and a drowsy silence lay over the large, square houses of Privet Drive ... The only person left outside was a teenage boy who was lying flat on his back in a flowerbed outside number four".
The book may have a darker side than the earlier escapades. Bloomsbury said Rowling also writes: "Dumbledore lowered his hands and surveyed Harry through his half-moon glasses. "It is time," he said, "for me to tell you what I should have told you five years ago, Harry. "Please sit down. I am going to tell you everything."

    Thank god for British actors

    by gypsytrobot

usually "Shakespearean trained,", who when they're not doing stagework, recycle endlessly through BBC productions, Masterpiece theater fare, and occasionally surface in a big movie such as this, but hopefully don't end up corrupted by money and stuck in bad movie hell like Anthony Hopkins. If this Spall is the actor playing the Mikado in "Topsy Turvy", he'll be wonderful as Wormtail. (Andy "Gollum" Serkis is also in Topsy Turvy, BTW) + Gary Oldman is still a terrible choice for the part of Sirius Black. Sirius was supposed to be formerly tall dark and handsome before a long stay in a terrible prison made him haggard and scary looking - they'll need Rick Baker to make Oldman look even formerly tall dark and handsome. Might as well cast Gary Sinise or Gary Coleman. "What you talking about that bomb in your ribcage?"

Some people are confused about the roles

    by gypsytrobot

up for casting in "Prisoner of Azkaban." I hope you won't mind these minor spoilers and I apologize if there are any spelling errors, I don't have the book at my side. When Harry Potter's dad was at Hogwarts, he had 3 buddies: Sirius Black ("Padfoot"), Remus Lupin ("Moony"), and Pete Pettigrew ("Wormtail"). Sirius Black was tall, dark and handsome before he got carted off to prison for allegedly murdering lots of people and betraying Harry's parents to Voldemort. Now he's pale, thin, haggard, with stringy black hair and a crazed look in his eyes. Remus Lupin comes back to Hogwarts to teach "Defense Against the Dark Arts", he is a shabby fellow who often looks unwell, but he's a nice guy and actually teaches the kids some useful stuff. Pete Pettigrew was a fat little toady in school, although when he finally shows his true self to the kids, he's not looking any better than Lupin. Oh and if you're wondering what HP's dad's nickname is, it's "Prongs". heh heh.
