News about CREATURE TECH development!
Hey folks, Harry here... Remember that article of Moriarty's about CREATURE TECH a while back? (yeah I didn't either, who reads Moriarty? click here for a refresher) Well here's the latest on the project and what that amazingly talented Doug TenNapel is up to!
I don't know if this is news or not, but...
Slushfactory.com has a new interview up with Doug TenNapel (creator of Creature Tech), and aside from talking about film inspirations in general there's this exchange:
"G: Fair enough. Any hope of Creature Tech getting turned into that animated film or television property in the near future?
T: It will be a movie. The studio (New Regency/Fox) approved my outline and I'm almost done with the rough draft!
G: What are you working on next?
T: I have an animated series at Nickelodeon based on my comic Gear. I'm also working on a prime-time animated series at Fox and a movie with Nick Cage."
I knew he was working on the movie but I think him being almost done with the rough draft is news, along with him working with Nick Cage on a project.

woops, pressed enter to fast.
Creature Tech reminded me a 'tad' too much of christian propaganda. Especially the ending. Now, it was a fun story and it used cliches in a very original way, but i hope they don't jam the 'faith' through our throats in the flick -
I enjoyed Creature Tech immensley. I could also take or leave the more religious elements, as it stands a very cool comic book.
Could be a cracking flick -
that just made my whole morning... *sigh* on to the next article!!!

Or is Harry being sarcastic. Anyway i'm on Mori's side in this battle over the AICN site.

Uh.. The "Faith" and "Religous" stuff was the whole point
by rowlf_the_dog
Sci-Fi has long been a way for people to mask deep messages and political/social commentary. Star Trek, Blade Runner, Minority Report, The Day The Earth Stood Still (rent it if you're too you to even have seen it on TV)... Every one of them was dripping in commentary about something deeper. That's one of the great things about the genre. It can be enjoyed on so many levels.
Folks who go in just for the slam-bang-shoot-em-up-gung-ho-action stuff can sit there and just let the film/book/tv show wash over them. Those of us that like to exercise the grey matter on occasion can appreciate the finer nuances of the piece.
I really like Creature Tech on both levels. I snickered at the redneck mantis and I can't remember laughing out loud at a comic before the Kool-Aid comment at the picnic. I also had to stop and think about the nature of faith and religion by the time I got to the end. At a time when my own faith has been put to the test this book gave me a way to step back from human face of my religion and look at the bigger picture.
Thanks for recommending it Drew. It was great. -
I wouldn't exactly say the faith and religious lessons were crammed down our throats. It made sense, and fit into the story. Also, if the villian was able to summon a demon from Hell, why wouldn't the hero end up having faith? At any rate, Creature Tech is the most amazing book that I have read in a long time. It's now in my top 3 favorites of all time, and a movie would be fantastic, if done right. I volunteer to do ANY acting neccessary!

i`ve never witnessed any serious feud of harry mori over aicn...and i think it was rather an ironical comment by harry ;)

I don't mind the hero getting faith, you're right, that's the point of it, it's more so that it's especially christianity.
Oh i've had a lifechanging experience *WHAM* christianity. I would rather have him look up to the sky in the end, giving him a belief in a 'higher'power, than having the cross around his neck. It doesn't go with the flow that he becomes a christian. Of course his father is a priest, but he rebelled at christianity all his life, and all of a sudden he accepts THAT particular religion.
All my bitching aside, i DO think the comic is great, it's just that little aspect i don't like. -
i thought this book was funny as hell, but i didn't like the religion stuff. at all. I just don't think it was done tastefully or made much sense. And to the person who mentioned all those sci-fi movies with religious undertones, that doesnt apply here. This was far from undertones. Christianity was definitely an overtone. I dunno, it just didn't sit well with me. I may be an atheist, but I rarely mind religious stories. -----------------------------oh yeah, and on a side note, TenNapel's a total whackjob. He wrote like this twenty page essay to thic comic reviewer who put up a note that he wouldn't review the book because he just wouldnt be able to view it on a subjective level or something like that due to the religion stuff and that he was sorry. DUring the essay you can see TenNapel slowly having a breakdown, it was hilarious.

why that hasn't been made into a live action or CGI flick yet is beyond me...."monkey for a head, indeed!"
-
You did notice that this takes place in the American South, right? Not a lot of Hindus in the area. Dr Ong's dad was a Minister too, not a rabbi. If it were set in Iraq I might have expected him to find Allah rather than Christ, but come on dude... What else could he have done given the setting? Then again, this is a story featuring an anthropomorphic mantis first seen reading a paper on the john. I guess anything goes.
-
I did that first crap because I'm an idiot.
Ok, ok, it somewhat does make sense. But it still 'irks' me, nothing more. I know that Tennapel is a christian, so he must've purposely chose that religion, and that's fine, it's a very personal thing for him. But me personally, as a reader, would've enjoyed it more if the ending was different; the hero finding faith, but NOT necessarily in christianity.
I'll watch the flick, i'll enjoy it, but i'll still be 'irked' by that part if it stays in the film. -
continuing talk back by myself when the news is old and at the bottom of the page....it gets me off..

creature tech is the best thing doug has done since creature tech, and if the film is done right it will be great.
some ideas:
1.have doug direct it. or terry gilliam.
2.get the right person to be dr ong.
3.put some money into the special effects.
and in a few years when creature tech is the biggest and best film ever, doug can make an earthworm jim film! -
what i meant to say was 'creature tech is the best thing doug has done since earthworm jim'. im so stupid.
