DEAD ZONE & OZ Season Premieres!!

Published at:  Jan 05, 2003 3:29:50 AM CST

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

Why didn’t “Dead Zone” make Herc’s top 20? Well, it would have made the top 30 for sure (alongside “The Daily Show,” “Futurama,” “Ed,” “Andy Richter,” “Dinner For Five,” “The Real World,” and “Survivor”). While I loved the first two episodes and the big season finale (focusing on charismatically evil politician Greg Stillson, a holdover from Stephen King’s exceptional novel), a lot of the intevening installments came off as a little watery. Still, who can wait to see Sean Patrick Flanery’s Stillson come after Nicole DeBoer’s Sarah? TV Guide call the second-season launch “fiendishly clever.” Entertainment Weekly gives it a “B+.” 10 p.m. Sunday. USA.

“Oz” did make the Herc top 20, and returns tonight for the start of its sixth and final season – to be comprised of eight final episodes. Will Augustus continue to act as Greek chorus even though he died at the end of last season? Will Schillinger impede Beecher’s final quest for parole? Will Rebadow and Poet finally act on their unspoken, if far too obvious, mutual attraction? 9 p.m. Sunday. HBO.

I am – Hercules!!

Who woulda thought Farmer Ted/"Johnny Be Good" could step into the Walken role and do so well with it? Not bad at all.

    I forgot they killed Agustus

    by coop

It's gonna suck if they have someone else do the narration. I'm thinking they're gonna put Poet in his place which of course would just not be right.

    Narration

    by samurai judge

Agustus WILL narrate at least one episode from the grave. However, they will also rotate reappearances by long gone characters, like Shirley Bellinger and Jefferson Keene as narrators, too.

    Lucky Americans

    by psychonaut

I really should not have read this article. Here in the UK we're 2 seasons behind you guys in the states, unless one has satellite TV, in which case we're only on season behind. And channel 4 are determined to prevent anyone from watching it when it is on, by showing it on random days at random times.

I haven't even seen the start of the season which (I have just learnt) ends with Augustus' death.

Were I an American I would probably described this as being "bogus." Or something like that

    Old Characters

    by funkaboo

I think Judge is right. At the HBO site when they talk about the new season starting, they have a list of guest appearances and two that stood out to me are John Seda and Leon, both actors who played characters that died in Season One. It makes sense that they'd have a new "dead" narrator every week.

I just got into Oz earlier last year after watching the whole first season on DVD over the course of a weekend. I lucked out in that they started playing all the seasons, in order, on HBO Zone every Thurs. night at 11. This allowed me to catch up. Some, like my father, complain that HBO waits so long in between their seasons that he doesn't care about or follow most of their shows anymore like Oz and Six Feet Under. I agree that it sucks to have to wait so long for new episodes but there are some shows (Oz, Sopranos) that are worth the wait. I'm just upset that it's only 8 final episodes.

Oz? Talk about Dead Zone, losers.

    by dawgeatdawg

I get on here to see some positive comments about a terrific sci fi show, The Dead Zone, a very well constructed show that is able to survive thanks to being the only game in town for USA besides Monk instead of getting lost and watered down by a Major network like FOX or UPN, but rather I get a bunch of comments of the awful Oz. You people suck. This is AINT IT COOL NEWS, not AINT IT BORING NEWS. The Dead Zone was consistently wonderful cable fare like The Shield and Monk, and Anthony Michael Hall shined. The best episode of the year was the courtroom episode when Hall holds up the jury as the one person who believes the person is innocent. Great and tense TV.

I agree. Talk about Dead Zone. Finally it's back. Sunday night has meaning again. YAY! Personally, I think Hall has come a long way from Breakfast Club and Sixteen Candles.

Oz just continues to get worse

    by anyawatcher

what the fuck was that? A prisoner accuses a priest of molesting him and they believe it? This prisoner who killed 2 priests. A guard looks the other way so a visiting lawyer is killed. How will this not be linked to Hank the Nazi? Bad bad bad. no way is this a top 20 show last year or this season. first few seasons were great now it sucks.

    URGENT-READ THIS

    by sexforfree

The DZ is an awesome show and I hope they are able to keep it fresh. AMH is doing the best work of his career. Regarding Harry, I hope you all know that is you write a lengthy criticism of Harry, he will remove it from all boards you may post it to. Harry has become everything he 'claims' to be against. In reality, Harry is "the establishment", the direction this website has gone should prove that. I hope he has the balls to let this remain posted.

p.s. the first time I tried to post this, the AICN message informed me I have been banned from posting talkbacks...I HAD TO CREATE A NEW ID. WHAT ARE THEY SCARED OF, A LITTLE CRITICISM/

    The dead zone is cool

    by maynard

An ya wanna know why? It reminded me in a few ways like the older Rod Serling twightlight zone episodes. I think the show has an exceptional vehicle or gimmick or whatever to shoot off in many directions for fresh plotlines. The New twilight zone kinda bites. Anyhoo, when is the new angel happenin.'

    Eric Schaeffer sucks...

    by christopher3

Much like Mike Binder, so I was pleased to see him cast as a child-kidnapping sicko. It would have been more interesting if they had stretched out the Johnny-losing-his-powers thing over several episodes, though.

    Dead Zone's Ratings???

    by kingofcrows

I just started watching the Dead Zone and I am completely hooked. What a good show! Does anyone know how it is doing in the ratings? Is it struggling or is it doing well? What are it's chances for a third season?

...will probably go away again later this season, at a pivotal moment. We SHOULD get some answers then. Love this show and "The Shield," by the way. Poops.

Isn't it amazing how differnet Katherine Ellerbe looks and acts in differnet roles? She is a very underappreciated actress, like many of the actors on OZ are.

    Hmm

    by radiocleve

Best rating for USA ever? Ever heard of a little thing called WWF Raw? Only got an 11 in the ratings, at one point. Everyone thought USA would crumble without it... now they've got Monk, Dead Zone, and seem to be fine.

By the by, I love Dead Zone, though I've only seen 4 episodes now (they had a marathon yesterday before the premiere and I happened to catch a couple and got hooked.)

The season premiere was great, and I can't wait to see where it goes. I honestly LOVED the religious-theme.
