New Images From SPY HUNTER!!

Published at:  Dec 27, 2002 7:35:27 AM CST

Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab.

One of our longtime friends here at AICN, “Only Slightly Irritated Max,” dropped me an e-mail the other day with several new vehicle designs attached for the upcoming bigscreen adaptation of SPY HUNTER. These are designs that should look familiar to fans of the most recent incarnations of the game, but they're definitely part of the style guide that the film's producers are putting together for the film. Since my main memories of playing the original videogame back in the day are mainly of the various vehicular gadgets you could use, it makes sense that we’re going to get all sorts of high-tech toys on wheels that can do all sorts of things.

This is just a glimpse, but check it out!

"Moriarty" out.

    by burlivesleftnut

Are these from the movie, or the game? They look exactly like the vehicles in the game, which I guess is cool, but it seems like we would see some more realistic designs for the movie, unless every seen is going to have CI vehicles.

The video game world of material is just SO SO SO rich and waiting to be harvested. Blech! Daredevil is DOING JLO!

    by tsunami3g

Little happy face with the bow and arrow going through all the rooms and killing monsters and collecting treasures. Played it to death in the arcade, Colecovision and Intellivision...Yeah, I kinda remember that one.
By the way, that Spyhunter vehicle reminds me of the Tron lightcycles.

These images look very suspiciously like the exact vehicles you use in the game. Not to mention the logo is exactly the same. Could these actually just be images from the video game? The mystery is yours.

    GAME (IS NOT) OVER

    by rafaelandes

I love to play VENTURE from COLECO in my old ATARI 2600 and I think is one of the best titles they ever launch. Remember the evil jumping skull and the sound efects? Awesome for the time. I always think Venture was a good material for a movie or a cartoon version. I use to play SPY HUNTER in my beloved COMMODORE 128 and that music is still somewhere in my head. But, a movie? Who knows... all is posible with a fine script.

    by nakedyossarian

Thanks for the memories, BrassMonkey. Back in the day, I used to play that game with my grandpop every time I visited him. He knew the best way to get us grandkids to visit - keep an Intellivision around the house. Recently I was playing Timesplitters 2 and found a version of SNAFU (called Anaconda) hidden in the game. What a cool bonus.

This is heavy stuff! The DIABLO Movie! We just need five charismatic stars to play the Barbarian, Paladin, Sorc, Druid, Assassin and Necro. Vin Diesel is the Druid for sure! And the Balrog from LOTR is for the role of DIABLO himself! I want to see that!

Depends on how ambitious they are with the concept

    by liquidnitrate

These are NOT images from the movie, but images from the game, and thank God, cuz the extreme sci-fi future look works better in the game. The movie oughtta be much more realistic if we're supposed to believe any of it. A jetski? Come on, that thing would look retarded on-screen. You can get away with all sorts of shite in a PS2 vid b/c fanboys are starved for entertainment. Who's Moriarty talking to? They haven't mentioned one thing yet about the storyline, so at this point who knows what sort of comic-book adventure they're planning. Is it a globe hopping audience-pleaser like Die Another Day, a moody thinker like Bourne Identity, or a spectacularly flaky romance like Tom Cruise/John Woo's pieceofshit MI2? And if the Spy Hunter were to duel in vehicular combat against 007, Jason Bourne and XXX, which of the 4 would win? (Hint, XXX would be the first to die). Whether or not this movie winds up any good or not has more to do with the people making something out of the concept, rather than expecting the game itself to somehow spawn dimensional characters and emotional intrigue (Mortal Kombat, Ghost Recon). Again, XXX wasn't much of a concept in and of itself, and its makers made a lousy movie and a lousy videogame. Star Wars was a great concept but Lucas has lost his touch and squandered the potential that once existed. At least with Spy Hunter a half-decent game exists (not much story but fun to play), and if they aim for some respectable storytelling we could be in for something worthwhile. A whole lot better than MI2, maybe as good as Blade, Hulk etc. But these pictures are silly, like some generic comic book wannabe designs. When are we gonna see real stuff from the real movie?

That's one movie that could really stand a remake. Well, really it needs a first-make, unless there's a version besides the one I saw because that one was so horrible as to not be worth mentioning or remembering....and yet I just did both.
Yeah, movies based on video games usually suck, but I've got hope someone will break the trend. What they really need to do is to make a sequel to FAST AND THE FURIOUS, but set it in the world of F-Zero. Floating cars with jumps on tracks set high above the city!! Come on, it would be great. And if Vin drives off the track in this movie, there can be no more sequels!!!!

So if you didn't enjoy the cinematic classic The Scorpion King (no I didn't see it but I figure a lot of you have and would appreciate that kind of sarcasm), then you surely won't enjoy this movie. I mean, gadgets and pyro and effects and whatever, if you aren't buying the lead actor's performance, then you'll never enjoy the movie. Let the anti-Rock flaming begin!

James Bond. Austin Powers. Mission: Impossible: those are already franchises. Let's not forget movies and shows like "In Like Flint," "Get Smart," "MacGuyver," "The Man From U.N.C.L.E.," "The Girl From U.N.C.L.E" and the old "I Spy" TV series (we'll overlook the new movie). And now we have new titles and pending franchises with "Alias," the "Charlie's Angels" films, "Spy Game", "XXX", "The Bourne Identity", "The Tuxedo", "Bad Company", "Undercover Brother", "Spy Kids", most of these last ones released IN THE LAST YEAR!!! Give us all a fuckin' break!! The shit is derivative and getting tired already!!

Fantasy is apparently in now, I think the best video game adaptation you could do right now would probably be the Legend of Zelda... If they didn't completely screw it up, of course. I'm going to get hell for this, but the Mario Bros. movie and the Mortal Kombat movie weren't really too bad. Kind of cool actually. I can still watch them sometimes... When they come on tv. No way in hell would I rent them. That's not the point.

    by kkozlo100

Darth SiskelIII knows whats up. Dont try to over think this. H-wood is so barren for ideas that they will take the thinest thread of shit and try to spint gold. SPY HUNTER is a classic in a completely different medium. Thats the thing. Gaming never got its props at the time this game was cutting edge. Im happy to give my money away on anything that looks even halfway decent, but suck me if you think im sentimental enough to give you my fucking money for a SPY HUNTER movie. the ZEN -like point of that game was that it left all of the pretense behind. SPY HUNTER the game was like" Your a Spy go kick ass with this car" it was Neo-realism in gaming .
