It’s the first because tonight’s two-hour installment is the never-before-aired two-hour pilot written and directed by Joss Whedon.
It’s the last because “Firefly” was cancelled while we were off at BnaT (sneaky little netlet!), and there will be a lengthy mid-season hiatus before we see the remaining three unaired episodes sometime in 2003. (Though Fox cancelled the show, its production company continues to shop “Firefly” to other networks, with struggling “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”/”Enterprise” network UPN said to be a leading candidate.)
Herc is running a fever of about 108 right now, so a full review of this four-star episode will not be forthcoming.

How long would it take for Enterprise to tank because the crew of Serenity shows them how it's done. I liked the first eppy of Enterprise but it went downhill after that. Hopefully UPN will pick it up and have a scifi double feature. This new Twilight Zone isn't working, just show the old B&W ones. About time we get to see it. I want to see the lil dino scene.

This is a repost from yesterday on the other Firefly TB, but I thought I'd share with all those who may have missed out. ***** Regarding last episode, "Objects in Space" ***** In the opening teaser of this episode, after the exterior shot of Serenity flying past a distant CGI planet (mirrored with the CGI Super-Hi-Bounce ball at the end of the ep), anyway, after all that, River wakes up and does a bit of wandering into the minds of her shipmates. When she's "reading" someone, time seems to skip, and the person being read vogues for the camera and says something cryptic. The first one she reads is her brother, and from there I make my hypothesis. ***** Simon: "I would be there right now." He says this later, to Kaylee, in the hallway when discussing how his sister's madness has forced him to become a fugitive on Serenity, abandoning his career at his hospital. "I would be there right now, if it weren't for..." ***** My theory is this: This episode is to Firefly's future as "Restless" (and more recently "Help") was to Buffy's, and each of River's readings of the crew are future (and past) lines of dialogue from key, resonating scenes. ***** 0: The VERY FIRST of which actually occurs in the first couple seconds of the episode, after the CGI flight through the guts of Serenity to the airduct camera shot of River awakening. A muted jumble of voices are heard, with the last being Book, saying, "We're all just floating." (I didn't see "Out of Gas" (the likeliest suspect for where this quote came from), so I say, future? Maybe?) ***** 1: Simon: "I would be there right now" Future, seven minutes hence, "Objects in Space" ***** 2: Jayne: "I got stupid. The money was too good." Past, referencing his failed kidnap/reward plot, "Ariel" ***** 3: Book: "I don't give half a hump if you're innocent or not. So where does that put you?" Distant past before Shepherdhood? All-too-near future as revealed traitor? Who knows. ***** 4&5: Wash & Zoe: Sexfest. Present. ***** 6: Inara: "I'm a big girl, just tell me." Wow, is she already fed up with the Moonlighting/Pretty Woman storyline, too? ***** 7: Mal: (Now, this line is delivered with a lump in his throat, and just watching it again breaks my heart for no good reason. Except maybe Firefly's cancellation, and the fact that perhaps none of these supposed hints will ever come to fruition.) "None of it means a damn thing." ...? ***** Anyway, the reason I say all these things are super-probable as hints to future episodes is that it WAS an episode penned by Joss. With that said, I also suspect a familial (as well as professional) tie between Jango and Boba. I mean Book and Urley. Especially if you ever see Book with a picture of a golden retriever... And that line of dialogue where Urley thinks Simon has asked if he was a lion really seemed like it was heading somewhere... ***** Keep your ears peeled during tonight's FINALLY-aired pilot for any of the mystery quotes, and your eyes tuned for Book-Urley ties. Chickenmonkey out!

Firefly would clean up if it was running against Enterprise (too bad Enterprise is on the same network), it doesn't need to run after. Besides, Joss' other show Angel will now be on at that time, so it's a no-starter.
I think the best idea would be for UPN to pick up both Firefly and Farscape and run them one right after the other. That would be monumental. -
Please pick up Firefly. It is a GREAT show and it deserves a good time slot on a good network. With Enterprise and Buffy, you're greatly increased your cred. Add Firefly to your flock and you'll be at the top of my list!

Horrid. ---- This thing was a turd from the get-go and think deep down Joss knew it, but couldn't resist getting his Chris Carter jones fixed. Sell shit to Fox, they'll buy anything -- for awhile. It is how they keep score in the'Wood ya know. I think he is also mortified that if SMG bolts in a few months, his whole empire collapses in short order, so he had to have something else cooking. I think that is wrong, I think the Buffyverse can survive, but fear makes men do strange things -- like pitch a wordy, hand-me down of a hand-me down space Western as hip, cutting edge TV action. Good riddance.

Fox still insists that Firefly is "on hiatus" with no new episodes ordered and production temporarily stopped. Sounds like "cancelled" to me but Fox is avoiding the "c" word. Ironically, Fox has been promoting the shit out of tonight's episode. Who knows what will happen if 'Serenity' gets some really kick ass ratings tonight? Firefly is far too good of a show/premise to just die. I predict someone will put the show back into production sooner than later. -- mattro

It was funny, Sexy, exciting, had action-a friggin Crazy Ivan, shootouts. What more did they want? Jayne's gynecologist line was priceless. And what's with this Joe Millionaire shit. It's a "fake" reality show. Didn't Dennis Leary already do it, and did a pretty good job. The bad acting is a dead give away. So they cancel Firefly and put on a show to make fun of the Bachelor Didn't Dennis Leary already do it, and did a pretty good job. Fuck Fox. And if Joss and ME are shopping the show, it's over on Fox.

Flaming f---ing retarded morons! This pilot wasn't exciting enough?! WTF?!! The pilot had it all! Action, drama, great dialogue, twists! What the hell did they want? This was a great lead in, and the second (first ep shown) was the perfect followup to hook people for the long haul.
Mind you, with Fox's treatment of Futurama, their attitude to the Simpson's, & an overwhelming desire to put the cheap pathetic tv on like Bachelor fill in the blank, any respect I had for who's in charge there got shot out the window!
At least have the courage to show the remaining episodes consistently. Not one here this week, another 2 weeks later on another day, and so on!

Firefly needs to go to the Sci-Fi Channel? Why? Purely selfish reasons. So I can see it! We don't have a UPN affiliate in Fort Wayne and I have to wait until Saturday nights at midnight to see Buffy The Vampire Slayer. If Firefly goes to UPN (which seems likely) there's no guarantee that any Fort Wayne station will pick it up. The way I see it, Joss Whedon has a loyal and I mean LOYAL fanbase. Virtually all of his shows pull in about 4.5 million viewers. We're probably all the same people and we'll follow him anywhere. Which would make Firefly the highest rated show by far on the Sci-Fi Channel. On another note, I can't believe Fox didn't air this episode first. Slow moving my ass! That Reaver ship was the most menacing damn thing I've seen on TV all year! I pray this show gets picked up by SOMEONE. Even if it is UPN and I can't see it. - Sean

I just finished watching the 2-hour pilot. Too bad they didn't run it to begin with. After seeing it, the episodes that have already been shown seem to make a lot more sense and the characters seem more real. I think I'm going to coin a new phrase for shows that have been screwed up by suit intervention and then cancelled; I call it "they've been TNT'd". For those who don't know, that refers to TNT suit intervention in Crusade and the results of that intervention.

If they had aired this pilot and given the audience some idea of who the characters were, the show probably wouldn't be cancelled now. Without any setup, the characters came across like a bunch of space cowboys - yee hah, who gives a rat's ass? Now we see what could have been and wasn't, thanks to the suits with the nit brains. Morons. May they rot in Joe Millionaire and Fastlane rerun hell. They deserve it. Here's hoping someone picks the show up and runs it the way it should have gone: from the beginning.

Fuck Fox. Fuck them up their stupid asses. Just watched the pilot... it was FREAKING BRILLIANT! I'm so mad. YOU CAN'T TAKE THE SKY FROM ME! The theme song alone made me teary-eyed. I rally hope Mr. Whedon finds another home for this great show. But, as he said on some board (www.buffistas.org, I think), many good people will lose their jobs in the meantime (and no, he wasn't talking about lame-ass Fox execs). On another note, get better, Herc. We need the Alias talkback ASAP! Before it gets cancelled or something.

I really didn't like Firefly at all for most of this season. In fact, I've posted such opinions on this site several times. But I really started to warm up to it during last weeks episode and the pilot was great. Now the show will probably end. Just my luck.
Seems to be some Fox executive has a vested interest (read: Starlet giving him blowjobs) in some mid season replacement. Hence the episode order and Friday night scheduling sabotage. -

a couple months ago I posted that His acting was, I beleive the term I used was "about as exciting as a cardboard cut out. I was rebuffed several times (most were done politely) and I just want to say: I WAS SOOOOOO WRONG! If Mr. Fillian ever reads this, I apologize. The last several weeks, and especially tonight's long delayed pilot proved that to me beyind any doubt. The rest of the cast I have no apologies to, because they all have kicked thespian ASS since episode 1, or 4, or whatever the fox it was. (BTW: Summer Glau is extremely hot- nude or or in a George Costanza Gortex parka.) They NEED to keep this show on the air, no matter what net runs it. The external shots of the ship, especially in atmosphere when they were being chased by the Reavers is a thing of beauty and looks completely real. Herc and/or Harry: you could do us all a favor by keeping a page on the site devoted to listing the names and addresses of network and film studio execs to which we can voice or compliments or displeasures (in the politest and most supportive way possible, of course!) If other fellow talkbackers agree with this sentiment, REPEAT IT so it gets noticed!

How in the hell wasn't this the first episode aired? It had everything - the Reavers ship was the best chase scene I have seen on TV recently. I watched it with some friends who had only heard of it and they wanted to know what was going to happen next week. They were shocked when I told them it was cancelled - at least they are going to jump on the UPN bandwagon now....

I just have to say again that the Reavers chase scene was one of THE most scary, intense, realistic scenes I've seen in ANY television show or movie. And trust me when I say that I don't suspend disbelief easily. The smoke trailing out of that ship as it blasted through the atmosphere rivaled anything from any Star Wars movie. And I'm the FIRST to scream FAKE when a CGI shot jars me out of the story. However, it's probably the fact that I was so sucked into the story that played a part in how sucked in I was to the effects. Keep this show on the air. Any way you can Joss. You've got at least 4 viewiers..me, my wife and both my boys! -

It was okay - certainly not one of the better episodes. And what some folks are missing is that well, yeah, the characters' actions in previous episodes make more sense now that we see this episode...but I'm not sure that if we had seen this episode first they would have made sense. There's some unmotivated stuff here - why does Mal keep Jayne on? His taking Simon on seems a bit out of left-field. And I'm still not entirely sure why Book stayed on. Whedon cut back on the cute/funny dialogue a bit to toss in some exposition (Simon's explanation of River goes on for a bit and it's stuff we both already know and if this had aired first would have been told to us again several times in subsequent episodes). It was certainly a good episode, and better than 90% of what's out there, but I can see why Fox wanted to hold it back a bit. It's a bit long-winded in spots and lord help us, it's got Carlos Jacott and his Mole O'Doom! I like Jacott in She Spies but here he was kinda wasted.

Whichever Fox execs thought the pilot wasn't good enough were clearly idiots -- this really should have been the first episode. Those morons I hold responsible for the demise of the show (although I feel it's pretty likely there aren't enough intelligent people watching television on Friday nights to build a substantial following for a show like this). Joss, you are the man. Kudos. I feel for the cast and crew if Firefly doesn't find another home...but they should all hold their heads high...The show was great, and deserves to keep on flying.

That was the best 2 hours of TV in a long time. Geezus, FOX, what have you done? Why bother signing on Joss Whedon if you weren't even going to listen to him? Anyone remember when FOX was cool and cutting edge? They are just like NBC, CBS, etc. now. If it wasn't for The Simpsons, I wouldn't be watching FOX anymore. Hope Firefly finds a new home. I may have b*tched about the show from time to time, but I watched every episode (well, at least the ones they bothered showing or not pre-empting) and it seems to me most of my problems were due to THE F*CKING EPISODES BEING SHOWN OUT OF ORDER! *** Holy Sh*t was that Reapers' Ship scary as hell. Talk about dramatic tension. I almost hope we never see them, I like them to remain a mystery.

long-range plot arc- which ALWAYS depends on the order of airing- the

to mix up the order to spice things up, then when no one watches

1) Tonight's "pilot" was a damn good show.
2) The Reaver's chase was intense!
3) Fox execs are morons for screwing with the chronology of the series.
4) All of us, including me, feel like assholes because we didn't watch the show until now.
I gave up after seeing the very first ep, because it was chaotic, confusing and I HATED the characters! Why did I hate them so much? Because I had NO IDEA who they were, what they were about, their motivation, etc. So many of my questions and problems with the characters were resolved by tonight's show.
5) Should the show get picked up? YES. Will it? Probably not... -

The concept of sinking as much money into something as FOX has sunk into Firefly and then just pissing it away is truly mind-blowing. Firefly managed to be not only good science fiction tv, but also (and much more amazing) good science fiction in general. The basic concept owes a lot to the work of Mike Resnick (Santiago and the Widowmaker series in particular) and his books would be a great place for everyone who has posted bozo complaints about starships and slug-throwers to start reading.
I hope someone has the good sense to give this show a new home and to capitalize on FOX's inept short-sightedness. -

C'mon, f*ucking SeaQuest was on, for what, 4 years, and the suits can't leave this on for a season. Oh yah, like I am going to be watching Fastlane now... Ugh. First, Farscape and now this....

This pilot wasn't good enough??? Holy Hell that was great. Here's just a few of the great things: Mal shoots the horse! Mal shoots the Fed - no dramatic "build tension" sequence - walks in, BOOM! Kaylee is fucking adorable with that parasol. Book - what a character - he tries to help the Fed, later in the year he gets special Alliance medical help - then the bounty hunter says "he's no Shepherd" - what the hell is he? JAYNE - what a frickin Mercenary - great character! Mal was originally very religious - now he's fuck it all after losing. Dinosaur war. Great FX - the Reaver ship spewing smoke trails through the atmosphere. FOX, you blew it! If you showed this ep first, then Train Job, crap, what a start. and i LOVE all the chinese language and motifs. - There was so much to this show - notice I hand't even mentioned Simon and River Tan, or the Companion, yet.

Granted, I've only had a chance to see 15 minutes of this show, so maybe I've missed something obvious that's covered in the opening credits...but for the love of God, can someone please explain to me: WHY ARE THEY ALL DRESSED LIKE A BUNCH OF FRICKIN' COWBOYS? What's with hauling horses around the galaxy and wearing low slung hip-holsters? As much as I enjoyed the 15 minutes I saw of the pilot, and was pleasantly surprised at how good it actually was, I'd been intentionally avoiding watching this thing because for some inexplicable reason that just smelled cheezy to me, everyone was DRESSED LIKE A BUNCH OF FRICKIN' COWBOYS!

While we know Book has something to do with the Alliance I don't think it's shadowing Simon and River. He probably did some bad ass things and was responsible for alot of deaths(like at the battle at Serenity) and later regreted it so he enters the priesthood of some religion. He might have stayed in part to watch over River but i don't think he has some other motive. He picked Serenity before he knew they were on it. And the Cowboy outfits? When you only wach 15 minutes of a show you tend to know nothing about it. That some planets have modern technology and others not so much. Firefly is a space western so the "cowboy" outfits fit. I'd say they are a 100% better than that spandex crap they wear on the Star Trek series. There was alot of bitching about this show before it started that it ripped off 20 different shows. I'd say that 99% of that has stopped because Firefly proved to be great on many levels. Now we get Fastlane-whoopeee

Anyawatcher -- I liked the 15 minutes that I saw, enough that I could overlook or maybe even appreciate the cowboy outfits. I'll try to find the reruns if they air. But are you saying that they didn't actually explain the cowboy outfits or horses in the show...they're just all there for some reason? Unfortunately, unless you actually spent a few minutes watching the show, a person wouldn't know that the cowboy thing might just work ...instead, a person sees a Firefly commercial and thinks "So the gimmick for this space show is that they're all dressed up like cowboys."... Problem with sci fi shows getting good enough ratings to stay on the air is that they have a minority viewership to begin with, even when everyone's wearing spandex (which is expected space apparel for some reason). Throw in cowboy outfits though, and I know that a ton of viewers will take one look at a Firefly commercial and rather watch anything else, rather than take a chance on a silly looking show that might actually turn out to be quality TV. End result? People tune in Fastlane, because the commercials show cars, babes, explosions and other stuff that slips easily through the mainstream skull.

#1 I admit that the whole space western theme put me off initially. I think it's one thing to have western influences and it's another to drop authentic looking western dress and locales in a future-based series. That being said I still gave the series a shot since it was Whedon. It took about five episodes for me to really acclimate myself but once I did I really got engrossed in the series. #2 This pilot kicked major kinds of ass. It was full of great character development, funny lines, cool action and set up many things that would pay off later in the series. In fact, next to "Out of Gas" this may be my favorite FIREFLY episode. Why, oh why is this show cancelled? I'm getting into this show as much as I did BUFFY and ANGEL. I can't believe this is it. It's not fair. I bet if this show was given a full season order and a decent time slot it'd attract viewers. Too bad FIREFLY is about to go the way of the dodo. L8r

I have to give FOX a lot of credit for standing behind "24", which had mediocre ratings initially. They went against the usual pattern and got the whole thing released on DVD immediately in order to promote season two, which I greatly appreciated. In the case of Firefly, though, starting the show without the pilot and playing with the episode order seemed like a deliberate attempt to scuttle it from the get-go. I'd sure like to know how the internal politics on the two shows where different, to result in such opposing attitudes. Two sets of executives, maybe?

I wasn't the first one to bring up the 'western outfits' this time. But it's for for the same reasons. Mookie, it just takes some getting used to, as you said it's a gimmick to reference old west serial clothing, as opposed to outfits from the early 1900's, or the 1950's even. It was a production choice for the vision of the show to contrast to most other sci-fi shows. But you seemed to have a more open understanding of why it didn't work for many would-be viewers who'd just catch the commercials. It still bugs me but it doesn't kill the show. *** Anyawatcher, you keep harping on 'spandex' of scifi. Can you reference a show within the last decade please? Old Star Trek don't count anymore, and I ain't seen spandex in TNG for a long while. I'll give you 7of9 because she was thrown in just for salivation ratings, but what else?

since I very rarely swear on these boards...BUT, Goddamn AWESOME Pilot!!! FOX - F'KIN IDIOTS. Should have aired this first - as it was intended. Damn. Goddamn. This show is topping Buffy, IMO. So much good stuff was in this pilot; where to begin? Air the damn thing again - on Sunday. And advertise the hell out of it - and I betcha it'll pick up viewers. It deserves to. Goddammit. Frickin' idiots are over at FOX.

They don't specificallt explain the clothing on the show, From watching the show you'll figure it out-even 1 episode. Some of the planets were terraformed and loads of money and technology were dumped on it. Others were given shovels and maybe a herd(from the pilot and in the intro to episodes)and fend for themselves. I'm sure all the poorer planets have are cotton and leather so it tends to look more Western. SPANDEX-they wear tight Spandex type clothing on Enterprise and TNG.

These two episodes were great. They did a much better job of explaining the way the universe worked than all the other episodes combined. It was intense right from the beginning, great characters and great action. Of course having seen all the episodes they decided to show first it didnt take half a second to figure out who was the spy for the alliance.
I hope some other station picks this show up because these episodes, Ariel, Out of Gas, and Shindig have shown that this is one of the best shows on the air right now. -

Here's something fun to do! Everyone go out and buy a book you would like to send to a FOX programming executive as a present. Then, rip it in half, discarding the back half off the book. Next, take all the individual chapters and shuffle them into any old random order, making sure to place Chapter 1 at the end. I find it really hard to believe that people are STILL having a hard time with the western motif and costumes. Why will people immediately accept the pajama like uniforms and idiotic looking civillian clothes on Star Trek but then, when they see the characters on Firefly wearing western clothes, completely flip out. IT'S A FUCKING TELEVISION SHOW!! Would you want an indepth discussion of the history of fashion on Star Trek? Personally, I don't really care about the why's. I just care that, styllisticaly, the western themes look damn cool and emphasize the often overlooked similarities between science fiction and westerns. (By the way, loved the reference to the relatively obscure (as obscure as a Beatles song can be anyway)Beatles song off the White Album, "Cry Baby Cry". I love that song and I love when Whedon just throws nice little touches like that out there.)

Firefly is the best SF show since DS9. Every episode of Firefly was better than anything produced on ENT or VGR. Firefly was what had been missing from SF television: it was written for adults. UPN did the right thing in picking up Buffy (and hopefully Angel). For a small network like UPN, they need to get critical hits before they really become legitimate. Firefly would be the perfect addition.

Now I don't know this for sure, but from watching the episode, we never see Simon sign on, much like the Alliance spy. We only see them loading. For all we know Simon DID sign on first and then went for his gear. Most likely he wasn't walking around the space dock lugging River around in the huge box, he probably had it stored somewhere while he went to secure transport. So maybe Book was following him and signed on after he saw Simon do so. Rewatch it, we never see who signed on first. ** Western clothing: My take is that first off, Joss just wanted to do a western in space. So there's that, end of story. Secondly, the clothing and style and old west-isms act as a metaphor for the current economic, political, and social atmosphere of the universe. The outer rim planets are the Old west, generally lawless, sparsely populated and remote. The Inner Core planets are the East coast. Technologically advanced, financially stable, economically strong and its citizen's are able to enjoy art and entertainment and the subsequent luxury of it all. The Old West/Outer rim is about survival and thats it. And much like the Old West, this galaxy is set post Civil war, where the big government united galaxy intentions of the Inner Planets/Northern states were resisted by the Outer rim planets/the south. They had a big war over it and the Alliance one, uniting the entire galaxy under its control. Now disenfranchised and beaten, many ex-soldiers choose to lose themselves in the vast wide open of the outer rim/old west, as far from the arm of the Government as they can get. All the western trappings, language and weapons add to this. The only difference is that its set in space. And yeah, maybe Star Trek may not wear spandex, but how come people accept those civilian wear pirate shirts as okay?

Unfortunatly we may never know What the plan for River was or if Book was following them. But remember Book said he left an Abbey where he was for two years. It doesn't appear to be a cover story, he was at the Abbey being a priest. His road looks of that of a man seeking redemption for alot of evil shit he did. He's on a journey and will let fate/God lead him. And to repeat-That Crazy Ivan manuver kicked ass.

Maybe we'll get lucky and at the very least get some more concrete hints as to whom Book really is. Hopefully. I'll admit it seems much more likely that he used to be an Alliance general, most likely responsible for the brown coats trouncing at the battle of Serenity and then had a crisis of conscious that sent him into the Priesthood, especially with that "Is this what life is like out here?" comment in the pilot. But the way he said River wasn't "going anywhere with you" to the Alliance spy seemed strange, as if the unspoken add-on would have been,

I like John Doe, but I suspect many of it's viewers are leftover from Firefly and will disappear when Firefly is gone. It's the sci-fi crowd. I can't believe Fox would cancel a show as good as Firefly. Network executives behave like spoiled little kids who want instant gratification. If a show isn't a big hit right out of the gate then it is cancelled. Whatever happened to giving a show time to develop and build an audience. Seinfeld wasn't an immediate hit, neither was Everybody Loves Raymond. Firefly has great potential. Fox should give it more time to find its audience. I 've become hooked on the show over the past couple months and am anxious to see where the story is going. I stay home on Friday nights just to see the show. I've told anyone who will listen to watch this show. Fox, please keep this show on the air.

Perhaps they will put a wonderful reality show in Firefly's place. With beautiful women that will have sex with a man for money...or perhaps one that shows that lonely people will debase themselves on tv for a hope of fame....I can't wait....
Now that I have seen Firefly's pilot, I cannot fathom why Fox disrupted the episode schedule.
The stories progressed beautifully, there were reoccuring themes, and character interaction. With each character maturing and evolving to a new situation.
One of the biggest gripes I have with Science Fiction television, is that you can replace a main character(take the captain of the Voyager) and replace them with a talking cabbage. Just stick a snappy techno babble speech in its leaves, give yourself a "deus ex machina" solution, and then pat yourself on the back and say "we solved it off to another third world planet to help with our shiny spaceship".
Could you see firefly progress without the unique elements that each character brought to the table, from Wash to River? Each character was unique in the situation, and none of them, not even Jayne was innately stupid.
Each had a sweetness, and a boldness to them I wanted to know all about the crew, where was Wash in the war? Why does she trust Mal so completely? Who is Shephard Book? etc. Can you say the same of any of the other Space shows on now?...ahh well...
Firefly took no storytelling shortcuts, no aliens, no miracles of space engineering, no super device we just happened to remember we have. No easy solutions just well crafted story telling.
The decision makers at Fox have figured out the money maker formula. Push pop shows (American Idol), 20 something sex action shows with street talking models (Fastlane), and perhaps a couple dysfunctional family shows and you can sell all the beer and pringles you want.
The hell with storytelling, the hell with crisp intellectual dialogue....well I can only hope Firefly gets picked up by UPN or the Sci Fi channel...I will miss it.
Until then perhaps we can watch some blond 20 something model say "girlfriend" 20 thousand times, while calling some pretty boy she met on a blind date a jerk, for ruining her special Ferrari that the undercover policeman clueless father figure gave her to fight crime while a shakey laughtrack roars to tell us that it was funny....did I get it all?

It is only through insanely incompetent marketing and promotion that this show is not one of the HITS if the new season. The pilot was awesome, well acted with a cast that obviously gelled right from the start. Why fox thought this episode was lacking and needed to be replaced can only be explained by the simple fact that Fox network executives do not have brains, rather they have bundles of tofu floating in Olde English 800 between their ears. This is the only theory that explains their incompetence. And man, I am fucking furious over it. I really love this show. I like it more than Buffy. I like it way more than Angel and I sure as hell like it more than Enterprise (which is already recycling stories). Fox. Fuck em. I guess they needed to make room for Syphalis Island. Hopefully a network with a clue will pick this up and leave Joss the hell alone.

Clue : it's not an issue. It makes sense that people would dress like that on the frontier where they have to make clothes from natural fibers and animal hides. Sheesh. Go visit the west sometime. I have family that are ranchers and they don't dress like the rest of us tech wenies. My uncle could get a walk on role on Firefly and he wouldn't need to visit the constume shop. He even has his own six shooter. Note that the people in the big cities dress all high fashion and pretty like. I think it's cool. It's a message : the more things change the more they stay the same. It's a metaphor for the old west anyway after the American Civil War. Would the western wear be OK as long as it had fiber optic illimination or something to make it "from the future." Jesus.

It was kind of fun being in on the joke and knowing immediately that Mal was screwing with Simon - but I can't help but wonder the effect if we had seen this episode first - probably would have remembered quickly that she's in the openning credits, but there would have been at least a moment of shock.

The people at Fox never supported this show and it was doomed from the start. ........... When FireFly first came on I did not like it , reason I did not know or care about the ctrs, if I had seen the Pilot eppy I would have liked Firefly from the start. ......... It took me about 5 to 7 eppys to start liking it and after that I thought it was Fantastic. Did Joss let us down NO it was the suits at Fox that let us down. .............................. The best thing for Firefly would be to team it up with Farscape and have a SciFi night of programing.

I also have farmers in my extended family...in southern Chile. Even today they rarely practice making their own clothes, but they use basic materials and methods for things like wool sweaters, socks and caps. I still have some of those long-ago birthday presents, but it doesn't resemble any "old west" styles, regardless of cut, color, or buttons. It is not an issue that the colonists in Firefly wear an older style of clothing based on limited technology available for production, it's an issue that ALL the places they visit look like Confederate Texas subsidiary states, despite the implication of diverse nationality among the colonies. So where are the impoverished blacks, hispanics and asians??? Are we to assume they all decided to base their clothing on the "old west" White-American style of the mid 1800's? I can much sooner accept the "western motif" as being the choice of a visual element for the show, or even as analogy to historical North American Civil War, than to imply that in reality, 'old tech' translates exclusively and universally as "Old West".

Okay, Anya that's an attempt-- except the only person I've seen wearing spandex on Enterprise has been T'Pol, the rest of the crew wears uniforms similar to today's NASA reg's. Many of the aliens wear the ugliest crap just to make it...alien. But it's not even 20% spandex of the races. In TNG Dianna wore nothing but spandex until she got her uniform in Season 7, and for the first 4 seasons or so the entire crew had those nasty pajamas before the looser-fitting fatigues. But again, no large amounts of spandex within the last decade. If you're paying attention to the shows, only one or 2 members of any recent Trek series are spandex-monkeys, and thankfully they've entirely all been WOMEN. I prefer that to seeing David Lee Roth running around. Any other series you care to mention?

I was starting to think I'd see the unaired pilot someday and think "wow, no wonder they skipped this," but now that I have seen it, I'm mad. That was a great pilot! Why sit on that? It didn't have enough action? But the second pilot didn't either! And this one sets up characters, this one gives ALL NINE blooming characters the chance to make an impression and become likable! This was what I needed at the beginning, what I felt lacking as the series went progressed through the first three weeks. Eventually the show got me loving it, but I have a patience with these kinds of shows that obviously FOX and the average viewer doesn't. This show was good, it deserved at least as long a life as syndicated crap like Andromeda and Earth: Final Conflict got! John Doe is going to continue with Fastlane, and this is being cancelled? The idiots have won again.

Never watched Buffy OR Angel, but I LOVE Firefly. We don't have a UPN affiliate in my area so I'm hoping Sci-Fi steps up to the plate and keeps the Serenity crew in the air.

I can't recall ever being pissed off at the prospect of a TV show being cancelled. Disappointed, sure, but never pissed off. Until now. I can feel myself beginning to fall in love with these characters. It's already had a couple of GREAT episodes. How many first season shows can boast that? I want to see the further adventures of Serenity and her crew. But Fox managed to screw this up from day one. I still believe there's life in this show if Fox just moves the timeslot and relaunches WITH THE PILOT. If this show ends now I'm going to be extremely pissed. And I may have to write Whedon a letter of support so he knows there were people out there who "got it." SHIT! L8r

I e-mailed a short letter suggesting that firefly has a small but slowly growing fan base and i suggested that firefly would be a great show to compliment either Buffy or Enterprise.
I said i wasn't a big enterprise fan but i know that if you team firefly and enterprise together same network same night you would increase the audiences of both.

I have ABSOLUTELY NO confidence in FOX anymore after their cancelling Firefly. Just when it was starting to grow on me, showing me JUST HOW DAMNED GOOD these actors were performing their roles. How they shone, or how they glowed softly at least, as the situation demanded it. Whedon took a helluva ballsy chance using a teenage girl in a nude scene, but it worked! I think I love Summer Glau. She's so irrestibly cute, adorably and lovely, aas well as insightfully talented. I hope she moves on to bigger and much better roles...although I'd really rather take her to wife and bear our children. Whoa! I think I'd better stop now.

The UPN has already taken a chance on one unsure Wheaten property, and with Buffy going away soon it makes perfect sence that they should pick up another, crate a big hoopla with things like "From the creater of Buffy comes. . ." and 2 minit promos in which the cast goes "blah, blah, blah, so excited to be moving to UPN, blah, blah." Then pop it together with the flagging Enterprise and Twilight Zone and make the "fan boy night." And then it either sinks or swims together. Its a risk but a calculated one.

networks want safe middle of the road entertainment that is relatively inexpensive and not terribly risky. unfortunately firefly fails on both accounts... the truth is, it's probably only fox that would take a run at a show like this.. and 24 (for example.. but at least 24 had a legitimate star in the lead role.. something firefly lacked (even though i loved the cast) ).. problem is they should've expected it to take a while to catch on.. seems like they pulled the trigger too quickly for me... alas.. joss whedon should stick to movies.. fuck tv..
