Let me be the first to say that "Die Another Day" was not only a bad Bond theme, it far and away was the worst Bond them of all time. Nothing even comes close to matching the empty noise and nonsensical, indulgent lyrics of that piece of crap.

So, naturally, it gets nominated for an award. Lame.

Chicago and Gangs will win everything this year. Plus people fussed that FOTR didnt have an ending... well TTT doesnt have a beginning or an ending.

is lucky it got the nominations it did. I am content with Peter Jackson getting a nom., and it would be nice to see Andy Serkis (even though we're all saying it now b/c New Line is pushing it) get a nom., but the film is far from perfect. First of all, the damn movie ends to early, second of all the film is about Frodo, so why the fuck is Aragorn in the lead? I liked the movie quite a bit, but it was a let down. As it stands, I like the rest of the nominations, even though Y TU MAMA TAMBIEN should get some attention, besides that Foriegn Film crap.

I'm with the all the others in saying that it'll be a definite shame if Andy Serkis isn't acknowledged this award season for his work on Gollum/Smeagol. What an amazing performance. My girlfriend broke down and cried. He should at least get a nomination somewhere for best supporting actor. Kudos to Peter Jackson for Best Director. And yey for the best film nomination. It's really unfortunate though. If Rings didn't win last year when it had no competion (Beautiful Mind was a pity award for Howard; that film didn't deserve half the attention people gave it; it wasn't anywhere near as deserving as Fellowship), it certainly won't win this year with all the notable films out there. Polanski, Spielberg, Scorcese... Wow! Jackson should certainly feel honored to see his name up there on that list. Man!

    WHERE are Hanks and Spielberg?

    by ashokx

Well... I guess the Noms could be worse. Really, after looking back at 2002... SW2. Sucked. Harry Potter. Lame. Punch-Drunk Love. No comment. Signs. Overrated trash. Spider-Man, Ring, and Red Dragon were good but not quite Oscar contenders. Perdition, Minority Report, and Two Towers REALLY shined this year however. I suspose I don't mind a lack of TTT noms, I imagine LOTR3 should do quite well. And at least the Globes recognized TTT for two awards and threw in a few for Perdition. Where are Hanks and Spielberg??? Oh well. Typical 80-year-old judges. Hopefully Catch Me If You Can will get a warn welcome by the Academy next year...

gollum will never win an acting award

    by gaboony

I know that the performance of andy uhh...gollum is getting rave reviews and everyone is praising him as the true deserver of the Supporting actor awards. But that will probably never happen. Andy is a character actor. A classification deemed on many of the greatest actors in hollywood that never get their true props come award time. I admire the performance, but unfortunately he'll probably lose his award nominations to any person who delivers their lines with a straight face in any one of the 50 boring "Drama" movies to come out this year.

How come there are six nominees for best foreign film and best d

    by el duderino

And a reminder for those who have heard it already, every list this year will be disappointing. Too many great films came out, and unless the number of possible nominees quadruples then there will always be some actor or picture that deserved the recognition it didn't get. My opinions on the golden globes? I haven't seen About Schmidt yet, but couldn't it have also qualified for a comedy? That would have bumped off at least Big Fat Greek Wedding or Nicholas Nickleby, the latter I haven't heard anything good about. The foreign film category is disgraceful, what with the absence of both Devil's Backbone and Y Tu Mama Tambien (Okay, I haven't seen Y Tu Mama, but it's appeared on enough lists to warrant a spot). Couldn't Catch Me If You Can or Confessions of a Dangerous Mind made it on the comedy slot as well? Who knows, maybe About a Boy is better than both, I never caught it during its theatrical run. Daniel Day Lewis is a supporting actor, and this is where Robin Williams or Greg Kinnear belonged (though I really didn't care all that much for Autofocus, I'll admit that Greg did really excellent work). I dig that Adam Sandler got a globe, at least that's something for Punch Drunk Love, which definately needed to be placed in the Best Comedy or Musical category. God, the more I think about it, the more flawed the Best Comedy/Musical category is. Sam Rockwell needed the nomination just because he's Sam Rockwell, and I hear he put in some great work. WHERE THE FUCK IS KATHY BATES?! Again, I haven't seen Schmidt yet so I should probably shut up until I have, but certainly she put in better work than fucking Goldie Hawn! Where is Jennifer Aniston for THE GOOD GIRL? She did fantastic work in that film! Where is the Good Girl period?! A fantastic movie all around! Ah, there's Mrs. Bates in Supporting Actress category. Nevermind that. An adapted screenplay award DEMANDS to be given for Lord of the Rings. Then again, it's in a separate category from all other films that come out this year, so it's understandable that people should understand that it's the best and give some underdogs the awards. Maybe by the time Return of the King comes out the series will finally be rewarded. All in all I'm not completely astounded by this list, I actually think it's pretty good considering all the titles that came out.

    Oscars & Serkis

    by mrgizmo

My bet: Serkis won't get nominated (which won't mean its not deserved - there are many solid performances this year). What I imagine WILL happen is that he and the lead animator(s) will receive a special award (Oscars do this all the time - John Chambers and the original POTA comes to mind, and John Lassiter for Toy Story). Which probably is more appropriate anyway - it really was an outstanding achievement in the arts AND sciences.

  • It's really depressing how poorly received Solaris was. Definately ranks as one of the top three films I have seen so far this year. Two Towers is spectacular, and people understand that. It's also been one helluva year for movies. Maybe this will turn into a pattern, where every year a star wars prequel has been released it turned out to be a great filmgoing year. Punchdrunk love DEFINATELY needed some more recognition. Rules of Attraction has no chance in hell of getting anything, though I thoroughly enjoyed it.

    what about....

    by blivenator

Greg Kinnear in Auto Focus? I really can't believe that this performance has seemingly been completely forgotten. Actually, scratch that. It makes total sense. Why give a nod to a performance which critiques celebrity and ethical amorality when you can look to Dicaprio's flashy and fun turn which assures you all will be well in your world no matter what you do-after all he never meant to hurt anybody. I guess that also explains the deletion of the year's best performance-Ryan Gosling in The Believer. Hell, that's the best film of the year regardless of what lame rules the Oscars use as justification for exclusion. But we're talking about the Globes. They have no excuse. And what about Danny Huston in ivansxtc? I know that no one saw this, but that doesn't seem to affect the voting here (i.e. The Hours, another film no one has seen yet, but with a "noble" message). As usual, these noms display nothing but a great fear of and disdain for anything which does not soothe or placate. If it wasn't for the notoriety these things give to mostly unworthy products they would scarcely be worth even commenting on.

  • The unfortunate thing is, four of the five nominees for Dramatic Picture have not been released yet here in Vancouver, so I can only comment on one. But the absence of Far From Heaven seems very strange to me. And Todd Haynes not getting nominated for director just boggles my mind. It's great to see that The Two Towers nabbed Picture and Director nods, but where's the Screenplay nod?!? One thing I don't get about the GG is that they have two categories for Picture, Actor, and Actress (which I think is stupid), but yet only one for screenplay! The Two Towers has the best Adapted Screenplay of any film I've seen this year (and I've seen a lot), but the fucking HFP doesn't nominate it! Imbeciles! I just have to remind myself that the Golden Globes are essentially a silly crap awards show that mildly manages to tie me over till the Oscars hit in late March. Even the Academy fucks up quite often, but they're still a million times better than the Hollywood Foreign Press. Just wait till February when the Oscar noms are announced, and we should see Far From Heaven and Two Towers getting the attention they deserve.

    Reply to Talkback

  • This is from imdb.com: The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which announced its nominations for Golden Globe Awards today, has begun taking steps to clean up its longtime image as a group of freeloading freelancers and part-time journalists, the Washington Post observed today. The newspaper noted that the group's president, Dagmar Dunlevy, is an actual working journalist and is seeking to bring in other professionals to replace some of the older members (who are required to produce at least four clippings each year to verify that they are bona fide writers for overseas publications). Three members, the Post said, are in their nineties; many others, in their eighties. The group has also began to place restrictions on the kinds of gifts members may receive from studios; nevertheless, the Post observed, the HFPA members often are plied with dinners, meals, and expensive junkets that are ordinarily denied members of the regular Hollywood press. " Now, i ask you, dear TBers, what kind of credibility should we give an awards show set up by poster children for Depends? None, of course. And I wouldnt be surprised in the least if the Academy of Film Arts and Sciences demographic broke down the same way. Fuck awards shows. Fuck them up their stupid asses. Its just too bad the AFI awards wont be broadcast this year....the show may have sucked, but the nominees and winners were FAR more balanced than these other two shitfests. Revolution is my name.

But Road to Perdition should have gotten at least a nom for picture, by own opinion Hanks should have gotten something too, but that would probably be pushing it. The same thing will happen this year with Scorsese and Jackson as last year with Howard/Jackson. Jackson will deserve Best Director, but Scorsese (and Howard last year) need to have Best Director awards. Maybe Jackson will get something for Return Of The King.

    TTT

    by twilightspider

No Howard Shore for TTT? That's just crap. He has created one of the most epic scores in recent memory, and yet, no nomination. But maybe the Academy will wise up and give him what he deserves... Awards shows are generally bull anyway, but if we didn't have them, what would us film geeks bitch about all year?

OK, I respect the first 4 movies being on your 5 most hated movies list (despite the fact that I can think of many worse movies), but even though I'm not the biggest Lord of the Rings fan, it is just senseless to call it the worst movie of the year. Any person in America will disagree with you there. And just so you know, the movie was not "capitalizing" on September 11th. The original book was called The Two Towers...NEARLY 50 YEARS AGO. And right after that when you say "I liked Jackass" that basically clinched it for me: you have a truly terrible taste in movies and knowledge of books. I'm sorry, and normally I'm an advocate for people's opinions, but your bad movie selections are just factually groundless to me. I suggest you see some really good movies to appreciate true cinema again.

  • Ooooh.... I forgot, flicks like Minority Report and Road to Perdition are actually good. Why the heck would they take home any Globes or Oscars. Who actually says, "Oh gee Matrix was cool, I kind of like Minority Report, yeah Memento was okay. Donnie Darko was alright too. Catch Black Hawk Down at a matinee sometime if you're bored. Far From Heaven

    by jack d. ripper

I don't get it with this film. Alright, it's very good, with brilliant moments, and no, the melodrama never drowns the emotions in artifice, and YES Dennis Quaid gives a beautiful performance, Julianne Moore's very tender and Dennis Haysbert is great, but...it never really SOARS consistently. It successfully channels the spirit of Sirk for sure, but he doesn't have the same gift of embracing melodrama that makes WRITTEN ON THE WIND one of the best films ever made. It's a fine, excellent
film, but I cannot understand why
the critics seem to be all over
this film, whilst completely ignoring brilliant films like AUTO FOCUS and THE GOOD GIRL. I mean GOOD GIRL has two AMAZING performances, one from Jennifer
Aniston and one from Jake Gyllenhaal, with fine supporting work from Zooey Deschanel, John C Riley and Tim Blake Nelson, and
is one of the best films to capture the ennui of modern life
    since AMERICAN BEAUTY. AUTO FOCUS
is a stunning portrait of addiction, boasts the performance
of the year from Greg Kinnear, as well as a stunning depiction
    of desperation from Willem Dafoe,
and has ALSO been totally ignored
by the critics. WHY IS THIS?? I'm
not dissing FAR FROM HEAVEN, it's
a very good, excellent film, but
why are AUTO FOCUS and THE GOOD GIRL, superior films, being overlooked?

  • I can understand Howard Shore not getting nominated this year simply because the mood of this score is much more ambient and serves as underlining. There are few "Listen to me -- I'm an Oscar-worthy composer" moments. It's rather subtle and subdued, especially with his elaborate re-workings and juxtapositions of leitmotifs and his introductions of new thematic strands (just listen to the way in which he combines new music for Gollum with the motif for the ring). His new rendition of the the music that accompanied the moth in FotR makes for a wonderful build-up to the return of Gandalf... it seems to me that this music represents the fortune or rather the intervention of some greater good, the good that Gandalf talked to Frodo about in the first film "There are other forces at work in Middle Earth besides the will of evil." A very evident reference to the Christian spirituality that infuses Tolkien's work. I think Shore is basically scoring the movie as Wagner would have scored it if Wagner were familiar with composing music for film. At any rate, I don't think the Academy can ignore RotK come Oscar time. If it's a good movie and if the competition isn't unusally strong, then I think Peter Jackson will be getting that Best Director trophy that he so mightily deserves. As little faith as I have in the Academy, I just don't see them disregarding the completed LotR, as two thirds of the trilogy so far has been embraced with passion by the public and by over ninety percent of professional critics. Peter Jackson says that RotK is his favorite, and that's rather easy for me to believe, as it should by all rights combine spectacle of enormous proportions with the dramatic closure that everyone keeps whining for.

Reading talkbacks is like when you go to the zoo and see the monkey playing with his shit. What you and I consider the best films of the year rarely win the top awards at the Golden Globes or the Oscars- people should know that by now. I'm really surprised that The Two Towers is up for best film and director- not because it don't deserve it (it does, and deserves to win), but because its a fantasy action adventure (sorry to stereotype)and a sequel. The fact that it has still been nominated shows its quality- isn't that something to celebrate?

Madonna's craptacular "song", Eminem's pathetic rap, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron's Bryan Adams awfulness and all the rest... Where are the good songs? If this was a category for worst song, I might agree, but come on! I hate to keep tooting the TTT horn, but the Gollum Song wipes the floor with all of these! And there were plenty of other good songs in movies this year, for god's sake.). That said, the lack of nominations for Road to Perdition, Far from Heaven, Donnie Darko and TTT is disappointing. And quite frankly, The Salton Sea, Autofocus and a couple of others would've earned nominations too. And where's Spirited Away? Aargh!

where's Minority Report, or The Good Girl, or a nomination for Bryan Gosling for The Believer, or a nomination for James Marsters? Oh, and Gaboony: Serkis could well get nominated for best supporting actor. That's the category character actors can get nominated in. It's the best actor category that gets people either acting stony faced, occasionally frenzied and brave (cue Braveheart/Unforgiven/JFK/...) or the latest retarded/otherwise mentally fucked up/minority character in some beloved, but often colourless drama film (cue Rainman/Beautiful Mind/...).

I do not believe that Andy Serkis deserves a nomination, the people at WETA do for bringing Gollum to life. Andy Serkis is not Gollum, he supplies a voice and some motion capture, WETA supply Gollum! For all intents and purposes anybody could have played Gollum, we are talking about a radio actor, do you think that somebody who stars in a radio presentation deserves a nomination for a movie award. You are all falling into the trap set by New Line, they only want to drum up publicity, if you want to see Andy Serkis in a movie, watch Death Watch (aghhhhhhhh) and then determine if Andy Serkis deserves a nomination!!!

One thing that has struck me about this is the Anti LOTR stance it has, for example last night some guy in a purple sweater was on doing something called"The Awful Truth" (Wasn't that a Michael Moore TV series?). On it he was using homophobic "Facts" taken from the LA premiere of TTT, from quotes taken from the Hobbit actors(Elijah, Sean, ETC). Does anyone know who owns E! news cos they have not given enough coverage on a history making trilogy of films. by benchoo

I hope Salma Hayek scores a globe and a goddamn oscar for her performance in Frida...although i suppose i could be saited if Julianne Moore won given her stellar performances in the past few years... I haven't seen Nicole Kidmans performance in 'The Hours' but, excepting 'The Others' i am yet to see a good performance from her. I think she is one of the most overhyped, mediocre talents in hollywood. Given that the person who's performance deserves to win not often does (don't make me quote past ceremonies u know it's true) i'm sure she will pick up a globe and an oscar and go on to gloss fucked up womens magazine where we can learn her secrets about divorce, fasion, being a mother and finding the time to be so 'talented' that she can win an oscar... it's all bullshit....hmm does this count as hate speech or being a jerkward....? i have just never gotten over Julia Roberts winning over Ellen Burstyn, but hey i guess Nicole might suprise me and be good and deserving of her globe nomination (and probable oscar nomination..i'm kinda being a bit presumptuous..forgive me)...anyway this is my first ever post so be nice if u respond...(i.e., don't write FUCKHEAD and put exclamation marks next to it..unless you r agreeing with me) :).

Road To Perdition, Hanks, and Spielberg

    by tigger99

Christ almighty, where the hell was Road to Perdition? The nomination for Newman was a given, but with two outstanding performances this year, nothing for Hanks? How about Spielberg's two great directorial efforts? Nothing! I was surprised, but not shocked about John Williams' snub because he's doing so many great scores nowadays, that no one can pick just one to give him his ump-teenth nomination for. I can't believe the Goldie Hawn thing...that movie seriously blew. A Roman Polanski movie should never be nominated as a U.S. film. The Pianist may be great, but Polanski will never return to the U.S. or film anything here, so why give him an award for American films? The Pianist should be nominated as a foreign film.

My list of who should and who will win

    by archimme

    Here goes:

    Best Drama Picture:
    Should: Two Towers
    Will: Gangs Of New York
    - So that the Academy can give TT an Oscar and not feel guilty about GONY not winning

    Best Comedy Picture:
    S: Chicago
    W: Chicago
    - DUH, it IS a comedy AND a musical!!!

    Best Director:
    S: Peter Jackson
    W: Martin Scorsese
    - A definite win for Marty cause its most deserved, if not for GONY, then for being snubbed for his entire career (Goodfellas lost out to KEVIN COSTNER, who hasn't even directed it). Most of the voters know that there's a third LOTR movie coming out that is most likely to be the best one of the three, and it has the best battle/story, so they'll give Jackson a prize then.

    Best Actor
    S: Jack Nicholson
    W: Daniel Day Lewis
    - It's a grand comeback after a 7 year absence dor Lewis, plus, you can say that HE IS THE MOVIE. Look for Jack to win an Oscar, though.

    Best Actor - musical
    S: Adam Sandler
    W: Adam Sandler
    - He pulled a "Jim Carrey" this year and this is probably the only time he'll get a chance to impress the voters.

    Best drama actress:
    S: Salma Hayek
    W: Nicole Kidman
    - Salma put ib the most effort for the picture, but Kidman has been snubbed out of TWO roles last year, and she made herself ugly for the picture.

    Best Comedy actress:
    S: Catherine Zeta Jones
    W: Nia Vandarlos
    - Jones has the juiciest role that oozes Oscar nom, sorry Rennee, but MBFGW earned the most money.

    Best supporting actor:
    S: Chris Cooper
    W: Chris Cooper
    - These are usually the wildcard, so technically all the noms are a "Should be" win, however Chris Cooper's role is the most creative.

    Best Support. actress:
    S: Kathy Bates
    W: Meril Streep
    - Same case as above. My guess is that because Streep is nominated twice, they have to give it at least one statuette, but I won't even be suprised if Queen Latifah picks up the win.

    Best original screenplay:
    S: Adaptation
    W: Adaptation
    - The safest bet of them all. Plus They'll all wanna see the "Donald Kauffman".

    Best Foreign:
    S: Hero
    W: Hero
    - It has enough buzz to surpass even the Crouching tiger, just by looking at the trailers. Everyone loves the epic.

    Best score:
    S: Rabbit Proof Fence
    W: Far From Heaven
    - The most horribly snubbed category(Howard Shore will get an Oscar). Far from heaven is the cutesy/melodramatic tone score that most voters like.

    Best Song:
    S: "Die another Day"
    W: "Wild Thornberry"
    - Phil Collins, Sting two years in a row? And you think that they WON'T give it to Paul Simon? He's been a critical darling since the Graduate. Thank God that Eminem won't get s...

Okay, now for some of the noms that should have been there but weren't:
Andy Serkis, keep your fingers crossed for Oscars, I think that this will be the biggest suprise next year. Robin Williams not being nominated is a disaster. So are Roman Polanski (The Pianist), the pianist score, Jim Broadbent for Nicholas Nickelby, Emily Watson for Best Supporting actress (Punch Drunk Love). But probably he worst snub is that Phillip Seymore Hoffman has not gotten any noms for DOUBLE award worthy performances, Best Supporting actor (25th Hour) and Best Actor (Love Liza). Love Liza was also snubbed off best adapted screenplay, oh wait they don't have that category here...

If it really were "all about ratings"

    by blanket-man

They would simply nominate the Most Popular Movies every year. The biggest ratings for the Oscars were when TITANIC won everything -- everyone saw that flick, so they tuned in. Too often, movies are nominated that 90% of the population haven't even seen, so who's going to watch? If they really wanted ratings, why not nominate Tobey Maguire for Spider-Man? Or Sam Raimi? Then, the same geeks who delivered $400 mil to SONY (of which I am one) would be tuned in to see if "their movie" could actually win something. Geez, even that "Hero" song didn't get nominated (not that "Hero" is a great song, but it's at least as listenable as any of the nominated tunes). Spidey deserved something! JK Simmons for Supporting Actor, maybe?

    Worst Bond Theme EVER

    by phimseto

Someone posted earlier that "Never Say Never Again" was worst. I have to disagree for two reasons. First, to cop the obvious argument, it's not part of the "official" Bond line. Or do we need to start considering "Casino Royale" while we are at it? Actually, I like the music in "Casino Royale" so go figure. But, back to my point, even NSNA set a tone for the film, somewhat in its lyrics and by hitting on the musical tenor of the film to come, regardless of what one thinks of the music in the film itself. "Die Another Day" on the other hand is a completely wasted effort, that is meaningless noise, nonsensical lyrics, and does nothing to establish the musical tone of the film - a critical, critical element of the James Bond franchise. A good example is the pointless and not very good Sheryl Crow "Tomorrow Never Dies" song that followed the same "Let's get a popular star to sing a song" mentality as the Madonna debacle. What they should have done instead was use the kd lang song penned by her and composer David Arnold that not only incorporates the major musical themes of the film, but is a first-rate throwback to the old Connery movie themes and an excellent song in its own right. I like Madonna quite a bit actually. In fact, I am scandalized enough that I actually enjoyed her cameo in "Die Another Day". But just because I like her does not excuse her from the beating she deserves for making the WORST BOND THEME EVER! "This Used To Be My Playground" would have been preferable to this silly (and Golden-Globe nominated!) technotrash. I hope that Eminem's song wins, and that the Academy also nominates "Gollum's Song" which I did not like when listening to the soundtrack but which I am huge fan of having now seen the portrayal of the character in TTT.

    The Thing About Award Shows

    by tellinstories

Award Shows are not indicators of the greatness of films, TV, music, acting...etc. There are so many actors/actresses/film that rightfully deserve an award. Too many politics effect these award shows that it lost credibility with me long ago.

YOU "TWO TOWERS" GROUPIES ARE EMBARASSING

    by rogueelement

I find it remarkable that fanboys now equate liking a movie to thinking it deserves a Golden Globe. TTT is an action film and here you losers are lamenting why Gollum didn't get nominated for best supporting actor. I don't remember my generation getting up in arms when "Empire Strikes Back" didn't get nominated for Best Picture. We just bought Hoth toys and trading cards and minded our own business. The vast majority of you haven't seen half the films nominated for best picture and don't have a clue what you're talking about. This is what is going through a TTT fanboy's head: "The Two Towers was so much better than Attack of the Clones and I even liked it more than Spider-Man (although Bruce Campbell was extraordinary). It was the best blockbuster by far this year so how could it not get nominated for best picture?" Look guys, being a loser is one thing, but adding pretentiousness to the mix is another thing entirely. Put down the officially licensed Glamdring Sword, rent "Star Wars" again and take it down a few pegs, alright?

    by moviefreak

Yes, the jury of the GG has build shit, but the academy will make it odervise. For example: Last year there were 4 GG nominations for "the lord of the rings: The Fellowship of the Ring", but this movie didn't got any GG. But at the Oscars LOTR1 got 13 nominations and won 4 of the 13 nominations. So I think, this year the oscar-nominations will look like this:

1.) Best Picture: "About Schmidt"; "Gangs of New York"; "Road to Perdition"; "The Hours" and "The two towers"!
2.) Best Actor in a leading role:
    Eminem (8 Mile); Tom Hanks (Road to Perdition); Jack Nicholson; Robin Williams (One hour photo) and Dennis Quaid (Far from Heaven;
3.) Best Actress in a leading role: Salma Hayek (Frida); Nicole Kidman (The Hours); Juliane Moore (Far from Heaven) and others...
    4.) Best Directing: Peter Jackson (LOTR 2); Rob Marshal (Chicago); Sam Mendess (Road to Perdition); Martin Scorsese (Gangs of NY);

Also there're good chances for: Andy Sperkins (best actor in a supporting role: LOTR2); Jude Law (best actor in a supporting role - Road to Perdition); Howard Shore (Best Score); Roberto Benigni (Best foreign language Film: "Pinocchio");___________________So we must hope. But I'm sure,
that the academy at the 75th birthday of them won't build such a fucking shit._______yours moviefreak_______

    LOTR

    by williamp78

Firstly, Howard Shore cannot be nominated as the award id for "Best Original Score" and his score is not fully original as most of it was heard first in FOTR. As for best song, unless it was released as a video or single independent of the video it cannot be nominated. Don't complain about things which are not permissible.

Andy Serkis shold be nominated, his performance is superb (by the way, eddie murphy was nominated last year for best supporting actor in the BAFTA ie british oscar for his work in shrek! serkis will be a certainty here in britain then!) While WETA musy be a dead cert for its effects work, seriously compare Gollum to Dobby or Yoda, (or Jar-Jar!).

The problem with GG or the Oscars is that they feel the award should go to a drama and only a drama. This is just plain wrong. We all know that FOTR is better than Beautiful Mind but FOTR is not a drama so it had no chance.

    by phimseto

You are a person of exquisite taste to have such opinions! Thanks for the note. I have a suspicion that Hollywood's fascination with the dangerous (like the rich kid who gets vicarious thrill out of riding into bad neighborhoods for his drugs) will put a lot of momentum behind Eminem's song. That, combined with the fact I can't see anyone (foreign press or domestic) being that interested in Madonna anymore that they would reward her for that bit of treacle. After all, "Swept Away" was a ridiculed failure worldwide! I suspect that the booming success of the movie "Die Another Day" had more to do with the nomination than anything else. The more I chew on the matter, the more I think "Best Song" will be for Curtis Hanson and Eminem what "Best Screenplay" was for Tarantino and Avery - the consolation prize for not getting awards they might otherwise have felt they deserved to win or be nominated for. Of course, I just hate Madonna's song so much that I could be driven mad by wishful thinking. We will find out soon enough.

    Reply to Talkback

  • Because that WAS the Requiem for a Dream score featured in the trailers. The music in the actual movie sounds nothing like it. Maybe you should see the film? ************ I gotta say, I'm surprised Two Towers was nominated given that it was a sequel to a film that didn't win when it was nominated last year. It's epic, it's beautiful, it's impressive, buuuuuuut the story has no beginning and no ending. Fellowship at least had a real starting point and almost came to a resolution. But Towers starts in the middle of a story, and ends well before anything is resolved. It's a lot more of a tease. Sure, it's entertaining as hell(to many), but not in a way that's as easy to measure as these award shows require. I do not expect Towers to get an Oscar nomination, not because I don't think it's a good movie, but because I think the Oscars needs a simpler crowd pleasing tradition narrative, not a middle chapter in an on-going series. If Fellowship had won last year, maybe it would be different, like with the Godfather movies, but like this I just don't see the climate of the awards accomodating Rings fans. I also don't think Awards shows are ever right about what's BEST in any given year, and we tend to give them more attention than they deserve. But it's a cultural thing, like calling football soccer and giving the name football to a sport where the foot and the ball don't actually come into contact for most of the game.

    by malaha

Road to Perdition was one of the most outrageously overrated movies ive ever seen. The movie has no real emotion and no real conflict. Hanks wants to go somehwere, he does. Hanks wants to kill someone, he does. He tells Tucci that it was so hard to get there but to us as an audience, it was just a dissolve from a corn field to the edge of chicago. I didn't feel ANYTHING in this movie, just plot points, for plots sake, an awful opening and closing narration, and mediocre performances by everyone except Jude Law. I dont think any of the performances were awful, just nothing to rave about. The movie, on the other hand, was pseudo intellectual yuppie trash.

    Get real? Chill out?

    by piss&moan

Why should TTT fans be expected to just "chill out" and not support one of the most acclaimed films of 2002, just because it is a so-called "fantasy" film. A great movie is a great movie, it doesn't matter a damn what its genre. And some of the criticisms I'm reading about the film (the film ended too abruptly, the movie is too "self-aware")sound too much like the kind of nit-picking nonsense certain major critics engage in when they're hesitant to fully endorse a great film, lest they be accused of jumping on a bandwagon. Pulp Fiction got a lot of this. Listen, I know that there's a prejudice toward this type of film, but compare either FOTR or TTT to films like Krull, Dungeon & Dragons, Beastmaster, The Sword and the Sorcerer, or any number of generic Hollywood heroic fantasy films. Throw in a guy wearing pointed ears to play an elf, a short guy to play a dwarf, and a tall guy to play a giant, film the movie in a park, and there you have it! Obviously, TTT and FOTR are vastly superior creations, and not just because of a larger budget. The Lord of the Rings Trilogy Films will be revered forever, while many of the movies that will surpass it in award nominations (Gladiator comes to mind), won't even be talked about five years from now.

    by piss&moan

Sorry if I missed your point, Lewis Black. My understanding of your "rant" was that fans of TTT should GET REAL (which I assumed meant to embrace reality) and to CHILL OUT (which I assumed meant to calm down). I further assumed you were using those terms in reference to the passionate belief by TTT fans that the movie should receive multiple major film awards, which I label as "support." If that's not what you were talking about, then you're right, you lost me. Again, if I misunderstood your point, my apologies. I have always known that TTT would likely be slighted by the major awards shows. I'm just not willing to accept that situation without giving my opinion on the matter (which is all I really did, after all). A lot of people didn't think a black person would ever win an Oscar for Best Actor or Best Actress, but it happened because a lot of people spoke up. They didn't just "get real," "chill out," and accept an obvious injustice. I don't believe Peter Jackson is willing to "accept" that his film won't score any major awards. He might not make a fuss publicly, but I'm sure he would have a lot to say about the subject behind closed doors. I'm not losing sleep over this issue, nor do I plan on slitting my wrists if TTT doesn't win an award. I do, however, plan to express my feelings, while I watch Chicago, or something like it pile up the awards will TTT is ignored. Is that acceptable to you? If not, I won't be losing any sleep about that, either.

'Andy Serkis is not Gollum, he supplies a voice and some motion capture, WETA supply Gollum!' --- What a fucking load of rubbish. Andy Serkis deserves the nomination for best supporting actor for the same reason that the balrog doesn't deserve a nomination. WETA is amazing, but they don't make the character. Andy does. When you take out the basic movement and voice acting of andy, what do you have? an immobile gollum with facial movement and excelent skin texturing (especially his elbows). Facial movement, which by the way, was most likely crafted around Andy's excelent voice acting. What your basicly saying is that acting is all in the actors looks, and thats rubbish. In my opinion weta and Andy Serkis both deserve a special oscar for their efforts. A new catagory is not needed.

    by darth brooks

Just saw Gangs of New York last night and I want those two hours and forty-five minutes of my life back. What a bloated pile of unfocused storytelling. This is Scorcese without a story editor. I kept waiting for the characters to all stab each other so that the audience could go home. There are absolutely no connections between the viewer and the characters, so the deaths of any of the characters mean no more than watching a Grand Theft Auto III prositute getting run over. I wouldn't recommend seeing this film even if it were "edited for time" AND "time compressed" on TBS. -- which it'll probably be in about a year.

Its the same every year!!! You have the Epic (TTT - deservedly so), the offbeat (Adaptation) and the schmaltzy welcome back nomination (Gangs of New York). Gangs doesnt even compare to Scorsese's earlier work that he was not even nominated for!

On the subject of nominations I disagree entirely with the people sticking up for Andy Serkis NOT being nominated. While the character is digital, Serkis' performance encompasses the word "performance". The man became Gollum and those are his movements we are seeing that are so beautifully digitized. Serkis deserves a nomination at the very least. The only actor who came close to matching his prowess in the category he should be nominated for is Dennis Quaid.

The Culkin kid should not be nominated. I'm sorry but I wasnt impressed with his performance. It was the material more than him that made the film. Hugh Grant has always sucked, and I don't think he even deserves to be invited to any awards ceremony with the soap opera trash he parades around as "acting."

The most notable "left outs" for me are undoubtedly Serkis and Greg Kinnear. The two best performances of the year and neither are mentioned at all by this Hollywood Foreign Association. Yet they nominate perhaps the most ethnically annoying film in history "The Fat Greek Wedding" and leave out "Punchdrunk Love" which is by far a more superior film. Adam Sandler's nomination is basically filler, as they probably tossed a coin between him and Eminem for the last slot. Although Sandler is far more deserving.

I get the sinking feeling that these critc awards people are in cahoots with the film industry. Giving award noms to films that are not even out yet sounds an awful lot like stacking the deck so that people will be more convinced to come and see these films. Serkis did more than voice acting, BarrelRider

    by piss&moan

Serkis performed with the other actors, and his physical movements and facial expressions were used as a template for the CGI that was added later. Do you think people would be making this much fuss over a simple voice-over? Eric Bana will portray the Hulk in the upcoming movie using much the same technique. In many ways, Gollum's image was a costume fashioned for Serkis. The problem, as I see it, is that it is difficult to determine how much of Gollum's performance is truly Serkis' creation and what part of it might have been augmented by the computer animators. That's what would make any award nomination controversial. I'm a diehard fan of TTT, and even I know getting Serkis some recognition so early in the use of this new CGI technique is going to be difficult.

...because that, I'm afraid, is the nature of The Lord of the Rings. I had the dubious honour of being born to 2 parents who had already been obsessed with LOTR since their own childhood in the 50s, so few people know better than me just how die-hard the fans can be. Believe me, they make Trekkies look like well-adjusted human beings. And I'm well aware that Serkis helped provide the movements for the computer model - so what? Am I supposed to believe that just because the voiceover artist helped the visual effects crew work out a CGI character's movements, that he should somehow become accredited for being on the screen? Of course he shouldn't because he isn't on the screen. What's on the screen is a computer sprite, buddy, nothing else. Serkis was just able to help with the movements because he happens to be a shortarse like the once-hobbit Gollum should be. Do you mean that if he'd been 6ft tall, and they'd got someone else to provide the movements, that no LOTR fans would be calling for him to be nominated as a supporting actor? Come, now. That is simply churlishness.

    by piss&moan

I wrote that I thought any award nomination for Serkis would be controversial. I also said it was difficult to determine how much of Gollum's performance was actually Serkis. LOTR fan I may be, but I have never offered support for him, specifically, to win an award. You're the one who termed his performance as a voice-over. If you had prior knowledge of his physical participation, you made no mention of it in your original post. I still believe you're not giving Serkis the credit he deserves, especially when you write that he was chosen because of his size. If they just wanted someone who simply "fit the armor" couldn't they have just as easily hired a stunt man? No, they chose an actor who also happened to have some training as a mime. Personally, I think it would've been better if he'd worn a real costume instead of the CGI. Either way, everything I read about TTT (and I've followed the LOTR films since I heard they were being produced) indicates that Serkis' physical participation is what elevated Gollum so far above Jar Jar Binks or that dreadful troll and centaur in the first Harry Potter flick. We don't really disagree about the award, issue, Barrelrider. But we do disagree about the value of Serkis' participation in the success of the Gollum character. I can offer you solid evidence in the form of published articles and televised "the Making of . . ." programs claiming that Gollum is very much (if not completely)a product of an outstanding acting performance. Can you offer anything beyond your opinion to contridict this? I'm sincere, because if you do, I am genuinely interested in knowing about it.
