On Saturday’s Update, I posted information that had been sent in to me by some Coaxial
readers who had seen some newspaper reports about NBC’s proposed television revival of
“Wonder Woman”. I asked questions in the report. For example, I wondered if “Wonder
Woman” would still fly the Invisible Jet she had in the comics, which she also used in the
Linda Carter series which was on the air a while back. I wondered what persona a WW
character named Steve Trevor would take, given that the lead’s profession had changed
(she used to be a Yeoman in the military, now she’s a Greek History Professor.)
To be totally and completely honest, despite my immense interest in seeing how this
project pans out, I’ve never known a great deal about “Wonder Woman”. Not that I
dislike the concept - it just never managed to insert itself into my routine. As such, I did
not know that the answers to some of my questions might be found in some recent comic
book installments which have helped revitalize the WW mythos. And, as it turns out,
these comics *seem* to be the basis for NBC’s new “take” on the character and concept.
A couple of readers wrote in to help me out. here is a bit of what they said:
In the comics, Diana Prince is currently a lecturer on Greek antiquities
for a museum in the mythical Gateway City, so the UCLA professor thing
isn't that far off. It also doesn't change the character of Steve
Trevor, who is still in the airforce and still responsible for making
first contact with the women of Paradise Island, now more specifically
known as Themyscira. However, Steve Trevor is now married to Etta Candy,
and is much older than Diana Prince. So maybe Lyle Waggoner could still
play him...
And another reader answered my Invisible Jet question:
...she doesn't use an invisible plane these days, she can now fly like Superman.
Also Steve Trevor is her "Spiritual Brother" so to speak, since it was Steve’s
mother Diana Trevor that Princes Diana(Yes, no more Diana Prince)was named
after and her heroic name and costume are based on.
So, there you go. A little more clarity about this project - which is apparently going
before cameras sometime in February. Hope to have a bit more as February draws closer.
Still say it would have been neat to see an “invisible plane” rendered with today’s
technologies. Alas, the times they are a’ changin...
