ANGEL
The thing I’ll always remember about Glenn Quinn, who played the original half-demon sidekick on “Angel,” is how loathed his character was (he was the only regular at the beginning who did not emigrate from “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”) – until he died. Then all anybody could talk about was how to get him back.
Herc,
Call me The Crow....I hate having to be the bearer of bad news....but since word hasnt leaked around to any other geekly sources, i suppose i better step up to the plate.
A fellow writer of mine, Kristen, at Corona's Test Pattern just confirmed through various sources that Glenn Quinn, or as loyal Angel fans knew him, the much missed half-demon Doyle, passed away this Tuesday. He was 32.
Even though the guy had already moved onto other projects, I dont think im alone in believing that he was one of the main reasons Angel got off to such a great start in that struggling first season. I can't really remember another situation where a character who only stuck around for one season was so beloved by fans. He was missed before. He'll be severely missed now.
"Revolution is my name..."
American “Angel” fans who discovered the series after its first handful of episodes and missed the whole Doyle saga will get to see all of Quinn’s short-lived contribution to the show when the “Angel” first-season DVD is released on Feb. 11.

I posted about this yesterday hoping it wasn't true. Too bad. Ever since "Hero" I held out hope for Doyle's return. I enjoyed Glenn's performances on ROSEANNE along with ANGEL. He'll be missed. :( L8r

As a Buffy fan it took a lot to convince me that Angel, as a spin-off, was any good at doyles charater won me over, i was shocked when he died.
I am saddened by the death of a great comedic and dramatic acter -
I never hated Doyle. The only Buffy-verse character I ever hated back in those days was Wesley. When I found out that Wes was going to replace Doyle I was seriously pissed. Doyle had a roguish charm about him and while he wasn't the best at, well, anything, his heart was always in the right place. I also thought that he and Cordy would have made a charming couple. But, Doyle passed on like Glenn Quinn does now. Rumors spread a few years about why he left ANGEL, personal problems and the like. I hope what peace he couldn't find on this earthly plane he finds in his new digs. I'll drink an Irish beer in his memory. Cheers! L8r

That's what I want to know.
-
Yes I too hoped that Doyle would return, but lets not stray from the fact that a young man with, I would imagine such a bright future has died at such a young age. Tragic news.
-
And does no one know how he died?
-
I'm shocked to read of Glenn Quinn's passing.
I had liked him since way back in the underrated movie 'campfire tales' (you yanks probably had a different title) and his work on Angel was superb- even though they did write him out.
I had never heard of any drug problems or anything, so I too, have to ask 'of what?'.
-
May an overdose of creative differences being an end to Freddie Prinze Jr's career.
-
While this is personal, the rumors of his "supposed" drug use has run rampant since his departure from Angel. If the truth is with held, it will only fuel more gossip. It is a great loss for his fans, and to keep them in the dark out of fear of the truth, his family could acutally cause more problems. Besides, when someone dies at 32, what else can we think when its couched with all the speculation that surfaced after his departure from Angel? RIP. Hopefully, in death he can find peace. My condolences to his family and all his fans.
-
Isn't it weird the way Doyle's death foreshadowed Glenn's death? Weird.
Unfortunately, when no cause is given it's usually one of three things:
1. Suicide
2.Overdose
3.AIDS
Most likely one of the first two. Aids has become less stigmitized and usually the actual cause of death is one of the complications which, if the family is squeamish, usually can be described in a way that doesn't reveal that the person had it.
The same goes with alcoholism. It could be described as acute liver disease, though if he did die of alcoholism at such a young age, the actual cause of death would probably be an alcohol related accident.
Condolences to family, friends and, of course, his fans. -
How bout a car accident? that's possible and obvious...maybe heart failure...
and Doyle's death foreshadowed his??????? I'm pretty sure he wasn't vaporized... just a thought...

I've been trying to confirm this story since Thursday morning, when it first appeared on a Glenn Quinn website. It has been picked up by other fan sites, all of which quote the original site, but no legitimate news service has independently confirmed it. Is it possible this could be a hoax started by someone capitalizing on the "drug use" rumors about Quinn? I'm not saying it is, I am just wondering what sources you have that make this news definite.
-
A very good source of mine, close to the Angel cast, informed me that it appears that Quinn died from a heroin OD. Such a shame.
-
Glenn will be sorely missed.
I always loved him on Angel, he was the thing that kept me watching in the first place when Angel started. I think he could have been a really interesting character if in the programme for longer.
My condolences to his family and friends during this hard time. -
...if I could do that, I could die fulfilled. R.I.P., Glenn.
-
Two people have died. RIP to both of them. http://glenn-quinn.com/
Atleast Winona Horowitz only got probation. -
FUCK! FUCK FUCK FUCK! This is a true tragedy.
-
His character was originally written not to be regular, but to usher in the dangers of LA for Angel and Cordelia.
-
that is very sad news. i remember watching the first series of angel, and thinking, doyle was great in roseanne, so this is the second demon he is helping out... boom boom tish.
seriously, he did help that show, and worked wellw ith both boreanaz and charisma carpenter, it felt different to the buffy-verse, it felt mature, and more grown-up at that time.
rest in peace fella.
DVD stuff. from the post, i am assumign the US doesnt have Angel series 1 or 2 on DVD yet, if i am wrong, sorry. but, if u have a multi-region DVD player, u can already get both series 1 and 2 on DVD from the UK or other countries in that region. series 1 has been out for a year or more, series 2 came out in may time or so. -
I had the fortune of meeting him and the rest of the cast when Angel's first season was just getting started and found him to be warm, friendly and funny. I also think the show did lose something when he left because the show lost its more "adult" tone afterward. Its a shame if it was because of drugs.
-
but I hear it may be drug related.
I liked Doyle but he was on when the writers were still trying to figure out where to go with the show and he was kinda lost in that.
I remember the rumors afterwards that he was let go because of drug use.
Maybe they were true.

Angel's Quinn Is Dead
Glenn Quinn, the Irish actor who appeared in the first season of The WB's Angel, died suddenly of undisclosed causes this week, a spokesperson confirmed to SCI FI Wire. The spokesperson declined to reveal details of Quinn's untimely passing until his family could make arrangements for his funeral. He was 32.
Quinn played the regular character of half-demon Doyle in the 1999 premiere season of Angel, but his character was killed off and replaced with Alexis Denisof's Wesley. At the time, series co-creator Joss Whedon said that Doyle's abrupt departure had been part of the show's plan from the beginning.
Quinn was born in Dublin, Ireland, and moved to the United States with his mother and two sisters in 1988, according to the IMDB. Among his various film and television roles, he is most recognized for his Angel role and for playing Becky's husband, Mark, on TV's Roseanne.
-
Glenn may have been written off for personal reasons, but the getting-killed-off thing hangs over pretty much everyone on Whedon productions. How many characters have been killed or left for dead -- Tera, Buffy, Angel, Buffy's mom, Faith, etc. etc.
-
I think we can all agree where "killing characters off" is concerned....Buffy, Angel, and Faith...don't really count.
-
who needs to stick a needle in their arm?
honestly -
My deepest prayers go out to the family and friends of Glenn Quinn! I pray that God will help you find peace in this tough time.
-
You suck. That wasn't funny man.
(ok it was a little funny, I know im going to hell) -
The article title for this story sucks. I thought he was gonna do an episode of the Twilight Zone when I first read it.
-
Does Hercules work for funimation?
-
This is sad. I didn't actually realise it was him in Roseanne either, till now. A pity he had to go.
-
It doesn't help that these headlines Have A Capital Letter At The Start Of Every Word -
because that makes it look like he was going to star in a show called The Next Dimension.
I always liked Doyle as a character. I thought he had great comic timing and bounced off Boreanaz really well. Shame, whatever the cause of death. -
The title of this news bit ("The next dimention") is the exact same pharse used by the dubbing company Funimation in a rediculously pathetic attempt to hide the fact that people in Dragonball Z were being killed. Instead of going to the afterlife when being blown up (as in the original), they simply went to "the next dimention". They weren't dead, just trapped in another dimention. This is, by the way, the only reason I'm even posting in this TB.
-
Show the guy some respect. When I first read the headline I thought he got a part on some show on the sci-fi channel. I had to find out from those two annoying assholes on E! news daily. I never got into Angel, but I thought he was a great comic talent on Roseanne. I hope he and his loved ones can find some peace.
-
I think people should respect his family and friends and not speculate about how he died. I'm sure they are dealing with enough grieving over a loved one without seeing what a bunch of strangers think was the cause of death. Can we not just be sad over his passing but be reassured knowing he is hopefully at peace? Seriously people...lets just try to remember how much we enjoyed his performance and talent.
And one more thing Herc, I'm usually amused by your writing, but the headline for this one was in seriously BAD TASTE! I'm a little disappointed...but understand that we all make mistakes. -
You know, people were saying EVERY theory under the sun about why Quinn left Angel(or was fired), many of them involving a dangerous drug habit or some sort of degenerative illness. I dismissed them because I thought those theories were in bad taste, unsubstantiated gossip that grown adults should know better than to spread. While I still think those rumors are disrespectful, I'm sorry to think one of them might have been true all along. This was sad news, and I'm sorry for Quinn's family. ************* I don't remember a lot of people saying to get rid of Doyle, Herc. There were people who didn't like him, but there are ALWAYS fans like that for every show. Please Herc, don't try to dig up some irony on this one. Sometimes stuff just happens, and fans get disappointed. You don't have to be the lone voice who remembers the way it really was.

...that although Springhill Jack "says" watching Angel and Buffy is gay, and called those of us who do douchbags, he still read a forum based on Angel. One might think that maybe he is a "Closet" fan of both, and he too tries to stay on top of any information dealing with the shows.

Springheel Jack reminds me more than a little of Andrew, don't ya think?
FWIW, I never liked Doyle and wasn't sorry to see his character get killed off. If drugs is indeed what killed Quinn, I hope some of the younger readers here take note and alter their behavior before it's too late. -
I always thought they would bring him back somehow on Angel. I loved Doyle, and was shocked when they killed him, and even more shocked that he is really dead now. I also think its bullshit that he was written off from day one. Not releasing how he died will fuel more gossip, and it will be revealed someday, years from now, on a E! True Hollywood Story about Angel. RIP, and my sympathies go out to his friends and families. ~~~~~~~~~~And yes, Shitheel Jack is a closet lover.

duhhh, only homosexuals watch Angel...
What a dumbshit. -
This is really sad news. Like so many people I liked Doyle and was really moved when his character was killed off in Angel. Now this is a tragedy.
I don't know how he died and I think gossip about it is disrespectful. And for all you people who are skeptical about Doyle's character being mean to be killed off go figure this - how else was Cordy meant to get the visions?
Anyway I hope Whedon and chums at Mutant Enemy make some kind of reference or dedication to Glenn in a future episode (certainly do more than the bond franchise did for desmond llewelyn in Die Another Day). I always thought an episode or novel when Angel has to go back in time and change something but can't tell anyone he's from the future would be really sad if he couldn't tell Doyle how much he missed him, that thought is even sadder now.
Goodbye Glenn, let's everyone remember his final words in his last episode "Is that it? Am I done?" -
... I agree with alot of people on this talkback that the headline was in very poor taste and is not only an insult to his memory but is an insult to this site.
If only I could have a dark alley, a baseball bat and five minutes alone with so-called Mr Hercules.

For those who can't help but be curious about it, www.glenn-quinn.com has the obituary entry from the LA Times, December 7. It indicates the official cause as "possible drug overdose".

i thought doyle was an okay character, but i thought angel really took off once he was off the show. i just didn't get the character, he was sorta like gregory sierra on barney miller. as far as the guy in real life, i'm sorry he's gone, if it was cancer then i'm glad the guy is no longer in pain and hope that if there is an afterlife that he ended up in a good place. if it was drugs then i can only say that this is another example of self inflicted stupidity, and it's a shame to see this happen. either way, rest in peace dude.

Zap2it reports that LAPD do indeed suspect a drug overdose unfortunately. He was found dead at a friend's home
-
and I didn't even remember he had been in Roseanne. He was my absolute favourite in Covington Cross, though: Cedric, youngest son of an English lord, who is supposed to become a monk but wants to be a heroic knight, and suffers from a bad relationship with his dad. (Actually: heroic aspirations... bad parent relationship... it's like a precursor to most Buffy/Angel characters.) ***I really liked Doyle, but Wes has really paid off too. I only wish there could've been a small appearance by Doyle before this (like meeting Cordy when she's up with the PTB - where else would he end up after his heroic death?). Sad news indeed.
-
before he died he was kicked out of a drug clinic for takeing drugs and partying with women he had no where to stay so he called a friend and sleped on his floor his friend found him cold and blue in the morning he was taking drugs before angel began the producers found out cause he was turning up late and other such stuff and they cound not take it any more so he was let go he (r.i.p)

Glenn Quinn, former co-star on The WB's Angel, may have died of a drug overdose, authorities said, according to a report in the Los Angeles Times. Quinn, 32, was found dead on Dec. 3, and an official cause of death was pending an autopsy and toxicology reports, the newspaper reported.
Dublin-born Quinn was found at a friend's home in North Hollywood, a suburb of Los Angeles, police told the Times. Detectives said that no foul play was suspected.

"Glenn Quinn, the Irish actor best known as the half-demon Doyle on Angel, has apparently succumbed to demons of his own.
Quinn's body was found on December 3 at a North Hollywood home. Over the weekend, authorities blamed his death on a "suspected overdose." The coroner will make an official determination following an autopsy and toxicology tests, with the final report due in a few weeks.
Glenn Martin Christopher Francis Quinn was born on May 28, 1970, in Dublin. He and his family relocated to the States in 1988.
He got his first break playing a pool shark in the Richard Marks video "Satisfied" followed by a supporting role as a drummer in the 1991 John Travolta vehicle Shout, in which Quinn shared an onscreen kiss with then unknown Gwyneth Paltrow.
His biggest exposure came courtesy of Roseanne, where he played Mark Healy, Becky Connor's slightly dim but likable boyfriend and then husband. His Roseanne stint lasted from 1990 until the ABC sitcom went off the air in 1997.
All those years on Roseanne forced Quinn to hide his Irish accent. However, he finally had an opportunity to show off his brogue while stealing scenes as semi-demon Allan Francis Doyle opposite David Boreanaz and Charisma Carpenter on the inaugural season of Angel in 1999.
Quinn's tenure on the Buffy the Vampire Slayer spinoff lasted just one season. He wound up getting written off the WB's supernatural series for undisclosed reasons--creator Joss Whedon was always vague about why the popular character was offed and fans had clamored for Quinn's return ever since.
Before his Angel demise, Quinn spoke fondly of the role. "I've been hiding it for so long that it's amazing to have some freedom. It was like putting on an old pair of shoes--it's bringing my soul back to life," he once told the Irish Times, regarding his chance to break out the accent.
The WB declined to issue a statement on Quinn's death.
Quinn's film credits include 1992's Dr. Giggles, Campfire Tales, Live Nude Girls and most recently the indie release RSVP. His TV r
