FIREFLY In Drydock!!

Published at:  Nov 26, 2002 9:43:08 PM CST

I am – Hercules!

Grrr. Argghh.

The Fox network is putting the best new show of the season on hiatus.

“Fastlane” will inherit the “Firefly” timeslot beginning in January, according to many, many Coaxial sources.

And “Firefly” will no longer have a slot. “Hiatus” is coming to River, Simon, Inara and Mal.

Fox’s nights of change:

  • TUESDAY
  • 8/7C AMERICAN IDOL
  • 9/8C 24

  • WEDNESDAY
  • 8/7C THAT '70S SHOW (new night & time)
  • 830/730C AMERICAN IDOL RESULTS SHOW
  • 9/8C BERNIE MAC (new time - actually his OLD time)
  • 930/830C CEDRIC (new time)

  • FRIDAY
  • 8/7C FASTLANE (new night & time)
  • 9/8C JOHN DOE

And you say, “Well, this is okay. They’re probably going to put ‘Firefly’ in the old ‘girls club’ slot. The old ‘Angel’ daypart. Mondays at 9 p.m.

Be a pity though if Fox stuck some piece-of-shit “Bachelor” knockoff in the Monday 9 p.m. timeslot. Wouldn’t it?

Folks, I don't know what the deal is, but if I were Joss Whedon, and thank God I'm not, I don't think I could put up with the constant network bullshit he keeps getting. I think it's time he just tells them all to piss off and starts his own network. Hell, it worked for B&B (Star Trek reference, you know).

I almost forgot to mention, Fox was considering a Wednesday night time slot for the show. I wonder if WB's new "Let's kill Angel" scheme had anything to do with the decision to just put the show on hold.
I'm starting to understand why Gene Roddenberry hated network execs. They don't seem to have the first damn clue about selling a sci-fi television show to young adults.

Sad... sad... sad... I couldn't even sit through a mere ten minutes of boredom inducing John Doe. Firefly, everything that enterprise wants to be is now in Family Guy Hell. They ought to have left Bernie Mac in his time slot, moved Cedric to Friday's and put Firefly up against Enterprise.

    Fox Fucks Firefly

    by chickenmonkey

Ever seen a fox fuck a firefly? Apart from the glowy bits, it ain't purdy. This mid-season shuffle on top of the continuity shuffle has me thinking that TV execs just must really hate Joss Whedon. Or, they WOULD hate him if they weren't too busy rolling naked in the money the American public hands over to them along with their brains. The Bachelor. Wrestling. Survivor. Big Brother. Blind Date. Enterprise. Charmed. Friends. Dawson's Creek. John Edwards. I tell you, if they cancel Firefly, and if this "time-slot of death" for Angel kills it, and if the Prinzess declines another season of Buffy, not only will Whedon's career be at a standstill, but 2003 will be the last year for quality genre television. Hey execs! Stop pandering to the lowest common denominator! Keep smartly written shows on the air, or the national IQ will drop so fast, we'll vote Bush back for five more terms!

Firefly is just not that good a show. It will go away. Joss will have to try again with something else. He ain't Midas. Not everything he touches turns to Gold. Birds of Prey - also not good. Face it guys, just cuz it's sci-fi fantasy doesnt mean you/we have to support it. have the courage to demand GOOD sci-fi fantasy. Even from Joss.

In the meantime, when Garbage like Fastlane is on - Read a book, rent a DVD, Join Tae Kwan Do or take piano lessons. -this, it appears, is a very bad tube year. Fortunately, there is life away from the tube.

Are you freakin kidding me? I thought the network that gave life to The Simpsons, X-Files, 24, and King O' The Hill would have some balls and give a potentially great, unique show a shot. But noooooooo, they have to air baseball, 30 Seconds to Obscurity, and the extremely long playing (and already soooo 5 minutes ago) music video Fastlane. Why did you have to jerk us off Fox? You never liked the show, why didn't you sell it to someone who cared. I hope that your LCD American Idol Two does a giant Who Wants To Be A Millionaire and sends Fox back to the gutter from whence it crawled. I might as well watch the gorram PAX channel. A plague, a plague on the freaking C.O.P.S. network.

    by the grey man

No need to argue over which show is/was best. Personally, I like/liked all of them. Each brought something good and different to the table.
I think what's most vexing is that Fox has had a number of good-to-great shows slip through its fingers. "Brisco County" was good, "Dark Angel" was okay, could have been *much* better, and 'nuff said about "Family Guy" and "The Tick." They just rocked. Fox needs to pull its head out of its posterior and just let shows run for a while. As a lot of folks have mentioned, not even "X-Files" was a hit right out of the gate. I suppose Fox is going to start running "24" out of sequence now...

    Stupid...Like... a...Fox.....?

    by zer0cool2k2

Is it all just a result of our high-internet bandwidth, satellite TV, Bored Now, society that television shows are given zero chance to find their voica and their audience these days? Look at the early days of some of the most successful shows in TV history. (And I said successful, not necessarily good or bad). Seinfeld struggled along for a while before people got it, Star Trek TNG was pretty god-awful 'til about the third season, and Friends wasn't an out of the box hit either until a few hairstyle modifications for it's cast. Or maybe it's because once a show does become a bonafide hit, the cast always has to renegotiate for big bucks, and it's much cheaper for the networks to sell us crappy reality shows with a new bunch of unknown competitors every season (No stars to pay, no writers to pay, bigger profits....mmmmmm...profits).
But still, this whole move seems to reek of Dumb. Is Fox trying to kill all their series? Sure this hurts Firefly, but what about Fastlane? Isn't it's target audience out partying on Friday night? Can a show be a success based on it's potential to look cool playing over the bar at TGIFriday's with the sound muted (well, guess they still save money on writers).

    Not such a bad thing

    by banky the hack

You know, this is likely not such a bad thing. For your consideration: Andy Richter Controls the Universe, one of the funniest and most innovative shows on FOX gets placed on hiatus after tepid ratings on Wednesday nights (or Tuesday...sometime during the week). It gets placed on hiatus, and then, shows up following Simpsons/Malcom on Sunday night at 9:30. Albeit, it does me little good being a Alias fan, but the timeslot is a hell of a sight better. Maybe they'll wisen up and give Firefly a nice and fitting timeslot, not following local news, or When Pangolins Attack!

    by lummox jr

...if in fact they give it a new time slot, and that timeslot isn't Wednesday. The Monday 9 PM time slot would be just perfect. But people, let us not complain that they moved this show out of the slot-o-death. This is the slot that killed Brisco, Sliders (twice!), and Strange Luck. (Yes, I know SciFi picked up Sliders, and as far as I'm concerned they delivered the death blow. That, and Sabrina Lloyd leaving for Sports Night.) The last thing Firefly needed was to stay in the Friday 8 PM slot; Fox, in its typical shortsightedness, would have canceled it there. Apparently it's just impossible to get it through some people's heads that no matter how good a show you put in that slot, it will only ever get ratings up to a certain level; they should save the slot-o-death for drivel. I haven't watched Fastlane, but judging by the promos this looks about right.

    by meatcleavermojo

the networks just can't take it. "there are 3 shows out there that are actually providing "entertainment". we can't have that. good writing, decent acting, melting of genres into eachother, what the fuck is going on? if he keeps this up, people will be expecting quality out of all our shows. so we'll cripple this man that has "integrity of vision" by putting all of his shows in poisoned time slots. then we'll hire the biggest assholes we can to get on websites and trash reviewers for liking something with some substance, such as shows created by this madman, who thinks t.v. can be good. we'll show him". fucking FOX and WB, why can't they just let us enjoy something for once? at least we'll still have the simpsons.

  • I mean c'mon, Fox has really dropped the ball this year. It's almost like they had no stategy whatsoever. First of all Sunday night @ 9:00 is not half-hour sitcom time. No solid lead in to its best drama 24. Totally screwing FIREFLY by running eps out of order and ruining any chance of establishing any kind of coherent storyline. Fox deserves its fifth place placing. (say that five times fast) The sad thing is it's not because of the shows. Strange. Peace.

    Fiefly "sucks"?

    by voice o. reason

All I ever heard were a lists of plot-holes with the psuedo-pilot (the train robbery episode), complaints that it all took place in one solar system, and complaints that there were no aliens. (To them I say: that was only one episode, so what, and get over it.) The most gripping and over-used argument against "Firefly" has been "It SUCKS!" Guys, the 90's are over. Learn a new word. I enjoyed "Firefly" every week, I thought the episodes were entertaining and fun (I especially liked the episode where Mal ordered the ship evacuated). The sad thing is that "Firefly" is twice the show "Enterprise" is, but gets half the attention because Trekkies are too pre-programmed with stupid expectations.
