Five Minutes Of STAR TREK: NEMESIS Online Now!!

Published at:  Nov 22, 2002 3:55:47 AM CST

Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab.

Paramount wrote yesterday to bring this to my attention, but the site’s miserable response time today kept me from posting it until now. Believe it or not, kids, our webmaster is working his ass off to resolve the site’s ongoing technical issues, and is well aware of them. We’re not the size of CNN.com or whatever, so it’s a little bit more demanding, and we hope you guys are able to ride the storm out with us. Once this is resolved, we’ll be faster than ever before.

In the meantime, head on over to IFILM if you want to see some footage from NEMESIS, which seems to be pleasing both TREK fans and nonfans alike. Sounds like it could be the same kind of crossover hit as WRATH OF KHAN or VOYAGE HOME. Personally, I can’t wait to see how Baird does with the picture. I liked the script, and I hope it works.

Paramount has teamed up with IFILM to premiere the STAR TREK NEMESIS ShowEast reel - the first indepth look at the movie online and something we thought your visitors would be into.

Three major scenes are shown (over 5 minutes of footage) including Shinzon and the Enterprise crew's first meeeting, a portion of the battle between the Enterprise and Shinzon's Scimitar warship and finally, a dramatic confrontation between Shinzon and Picard toward the end of the film.

CHECK IT OUT RIGHT HERE!!

Thanks for the heads-up, GE, and let’s get this Talk Back started!

"Moriarty" out.

Not the greatest trekker ever but I always liked the next gen better than the original crew. That said Wrath Of Khan was the best Trek picture. And First Contact was pretty good too. Nemesis looks good and the scribe from Gladiator seems to know what he's doing.

This looks significantly better than any of the Next Generation films, and if it keeps up this standard for the whole 120 minutes or whatever it will rock. Already I can feel the memory of Insurrection fading....

Damn. I liked what I saw. Please let this movie be good.

    by spacesheik

NEMESIS could be a big hit if it measures up to the taut trailer and to the footage here. Obviously, some of the footage has a temp score on it, but the mood of the film, including the introductory meeting between the crew and Shinzon (a Pinhead lookalike) and his Nosferatu-like sidekick looks quite atmospheric. I caught some of the battle in the minute Realvideo screen. In most Trek movies the Enterprise takes a beating while it get slammed and shot at from different ships and then either (a) releases some kind of technobable gas anomaly or (b) fires ONE shot. In this one, the Enterprise is going apeshit firing all over the place trying to nail The Scorpion ship. These kinds of scenes will have audiences cheering in the aisles. I hope NEMESIS' 116 minute running time lives up to all the hype and the exciting stuff we've seen so far. Paramount made a damn good call by getting new blood in; Stuard Baird (EXECUTIVE DECISION, US MARSHALLS), his cinematographer Jeffrey Kimball (MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 2, TOP GUN) and his Costume Designer Bob Ringwood (BATMAN). This looks like it will break the $100 million mark.

And then he would have waxed philosophical about it. He would've lived on. And learned. And that's the appeal of Next Gen, even if it sounds boring.

It's kind of like the old cold war days. The soviets build a big-ass airplane or tank, then we counter with something even larger! I guess the boys at the San Francisco shipyards better start building an even bigger and more bad-ass starship!!! _________Kudos to Digital Domain. They helm the FX for this film, and it looks like they've done a kick ass job!

This franchise is now officially dead. And there I was hoping they would finally do something interesting with the Romulans. No such luck, I guess. Burn in hell, Rick Berman. By the way - did anyone hear what Paramount did to Shatner? The woulnd't let him touch Trek 5, yet they're calling the DVD "Director's Edition". Damn hypocrites.

Same old scenario. Shut down their weapons. Attack. Evasive maneuvers. We've been hit. Random crewmembers fling themselves across deck as sparks fly from the controls. The captain comes up with something terribly "clever" at the last second. Add that to the tired old "I am your evil twin" scenario, and I think we've officially broken the even/odd rule. This franchise is on life-support. Let it die already. "It was... fun."

How about a trilogy of prequels? "Star Trek- Episode I: The Eastern Coalition Menace", followed by "Star Trek- Episode II: Attack of the Clones" and finally "Star Trek- Episode III: Not Yet Titled". But Seriously, "First Contact" was way up there with "The Wrath of Khan", and Nemesis seems interesting. - I know Kung Fu.

You can tell already that this movie is gonna look and feel different that previous Trek movies. These guys are getting old, and I think that's the point. They want to show that they're tired, getting on in their years. Personally, I'm looking forward to it. I think it'll be a departure, which can only be a good thing.

    Paramount screwed Shatner before....

    by manosthof

....why not again? He could have fixed the movie, which for the record was not all his fault. A few FX fixes here and there, especially in the last act could have done wonders. Paramount killed his budget, that and other incidents helped to kill his movie. I am not saying it would have been *great*, but maybe it wouldn't have been so maligned, then and now. As far as these "directors editions" go, Paramount cheaped out on III, there was not much worth buying it again for. Paramount has always treated Trek as its lower tier budget cash cow, and shamelessly so. Keep flogging the dead horse, boys. I have been a trekker forever but this is hard to stomach. As far as Nemesis, I would like it to be good, but the whole franchise has deteriorated into Star Trek "schtick" and technobabble resolutions, lazy writing to the nth degree. I remember Berman once said that they would never use the Guardian of Forever again because it was a "lazy plot device" for time travelling, and then he came up with that Nexus B.S. with his cronies for the Generations movie. Any way you slice it, I am not hopeful. I blame Paramount but mostly Berman.

    by sundancekeed

What I don't get is why so many of you are blasting this film before you even see it. I saw the 5 minutes and I saw the trailers and based on that, this looks to be a pretty decent film.
I don't think some of you guys are going to be happy unless they bring back the original crew. Well, one of em's dead and the others are either retired or making Priceline commercials. What did you ever watch Star Trek for anyhow? It's FICTION people! It's about telling stories set in space about a group of regular characters in unusual situations. I enjoyed most of TNG episodes and with the exception of Insurrection, enjoyed the films. Stewart, Frakes, Spiner, etc. did as good a job as they possibly could replacing a well-loved group of people. I always thought they did a hell of a job. But some of you fanboys out there absolutely can't rest unless you can nitpick the shit out of something. How boring it must be to know everything. Why don't you just WATCH the movie and reserve judgement until then?

We (that is, some of us) don't like the recent Star Trek movies because they're boring, the plots are hackneyed, the acting is flat and in several of them the SFX suck donkey balls. In short we don't hate Star Trek we hate BAD MOVIES. Unlike you we won't just watch any flyblown piece of SHIT that Paramount tosses up on the screen just because it has "Star Trek" stamped onto it. The last two, hell three Trek films have been crap; I won't waste my time seeing this judging by the generally bad-to-tepid reviews it's been getting across the web thus far. Fuck Star Trek; like X-Files it's outlived its time. Just let your moldering old cash cow die Paramount.
