You knew it would never end... LETHAL WEAPON 5!

Published at:  Nov 18, 2002 7:29:04 AM CST

SPOILER ALERT !!

Hey folks, Harry here... A couple of days ago, Danny Glover mentioned on a radio station somewhere out there in the world that we hadn't seen the last of the Lethal Weapon movies. That wasn't enough info for me to put a story together on, but when I got this email (which I've messed with a bit to protect smiley's source) I knew there was talks at the least...

Hi Aint it Cool Newsies,

I've some news for you. More of a whisper more than anything - something that looks like coming off, but knowing Hollywood as we all do, may not.

I bumped into old friend last Friday. He works on ______ for flicks - the lethal weapon movies among them.. And what's on his scheudle for 2003? ....None other than a 5th "Lethal Weapon" movie. Now while hardly anything's written in stone, Warners has contacted him about a possible job come next Fall. It'll be for...Lethal Weapon 5.

Yep, I know what you're saying - how they going to convince Mel Gibson to come back for that one. After all he seems pretty determined that he's not doing any more. We'll thing is, as much as they'd love him to Riggs up again, they're thinking of an alternative - and that alternative is reportedly writing Riggs off. The rough outline of LW5 would centre on Danny Glover's character, Roger, pulled out of retirement to avenge his late partners death, none other than Martin Riggs.

No script, No stars, no nothing yet....but fans of the series might atleast be interested to know it will be continuing. goor or bad as that is.

:)

Well, if this happens, then Mel will finally get his wish, he's been wanting Riggs dead since the end of the first film, but no matter how many bullets they filled him with, he was strong to the finish, cuz he ates all his spinach and watched those Stooges... that's the key thing. Anyways... Sounds like it is in the works... we'll see...

    by tilak0219

Didn't Mel say he would never do anoth LW after #3? Then they offered him a huge paycheck plus some serious points on the fist dollar gross and low and behold we had #4. I did like #4 for showing us Jet Li. But come on now lets face facts the all mighty dollar rules here. Give Mel an offor for say 30 mil up front and 30% of first $ gross and you can pretty much see #'s 5 and 6 on the way. Another thought didn't Mel say he was considering going back to the wastelands of Road Warrior?

First, I won't see the movie if they make it.

That said, if they want to get Mel, they can agree to bankroll or dsitribute some other speciallow profit movie. Is it Gibson who want to shoot a Jesus Bioflick in Latin,Greek, and Armenian (?) with subtitles? They link one to other and they got Mel.

and you know he'll do the film, especially if his PASSION film flops, he'll want to make a quick deposit, so he'll take this mindless drivel in a second. Last time they had the Jet Li, and how will they top it? Easy, they'll hire that Cirqou du Solil (correct me PLEASE) group of folks, and claim that they are French drug traffickers with the amazing ability of balance. In a word LETHAL WEAPON 5 will be insipid (among other adjectives).

    Mel will never do this!!

    by viola123

Ever. He will never do this movie! I think it's ridiculous that they're considering doing a fifth movie anyway, but if they insist on it, they can count Mel out and I guess they are, given that they're already trying to find a way to center it around Roger -- which really won't work. At any rate, Mel will never make "Lethal Weapon 5." He won't. And it's not a matter of money. The last film was done as a favor for Richard Donner, out of loyalty for a friend and in memory of a franchise that is part of his career. But no way would he do a fifth for the moeny. Mel gets $25M per film anyways, like he did for "The Patriot" (hardly commercial) and so, why would he feel compelled to make "LW5" just for money? As for "The Passion," I seriously doubt he cares how much money it's going to make. His comany, Icon Productions, is bankrolling the film and he knows that it's not going to be a box-office smash. He knows the risks going in, but he's making it because he feels strongly about it. It's a story he needs to tell. Martin Riggs dying and Roger Murtaugh taking over is NOT. I can't imagine what Mel must be thinking, hearing that this idea being tossed about. In any case, I know for a fact that Mel Gibson will NEVER make another "Lethal Weapon" and I think it's lame that his friends put him in a position where he must say no.

    by silvio dante

He's supposed to be the "lethal weapon" of the title. So dig up Shane Black, wherever he is. He knows how to write Riggs & Murtaugh. Throw the family values and comedy out the window for a while. Fuck Martin Riggs up good, mentally. Bring back the mad dog of the first film. Give him something to AVENGE. Fill Riggs with righteous anger and then get him to RELEASE that anger. So kill Darlene Love and Rene Russo first. while you're at it, make sure Leo gets it too. 15 minutes to the end, off Murtaugh. At this point Mel shouldn't be too mellow and those feral, wolverine-like qualities of LW1's Martin Riggs are back on. Let the mayhem ensue. I'm telling you, get hard boiled with this shit, and I mean Jack-Slater-hard-boiled because let's face it, first two worked cuz they were about buddies AND revenge, not just buddies. ______Murtaugh: "God hates me. That's what it is."
Riggs: "Hate him back; it works for me."______that's the attitude I'm talking about!

He pleaded with Mel to do LW4 because he was so desperate for cash, and since Mel is a nice guy, he did it for an old friend. Honestly, why the fuck is Leo still hanging around? He was hilarious in the second, okay in the third, and fucking obnoxious in the fourth. Rene Russo was the main attraction to the otherwise routine third, yet was reduced to a pregnant damsel in distress in the fourth (and having a bad guy hold a knife to her belly was LOW). Now I suppose Chris Rock will be carried over to part five with a younger, shriller comic actor added to the mix. Gibson and Glover are getting crowded out of their own franchise! Where the Lethal Weapon series went wrong.

    by zer0cool2k2

The best explanation I've ever heard on this series, by some reviewer I can't remember, was:
"Lethal Weapon started out as a mean-spirited story with some comedic moments, but it's gradually become a comedic series with some mean-spirited moments".
That sums the whole series up for me. It just doesn't play right with a happy, family oriented Riggs. The first film is still one of the all-time greats, and the second wasn't bad at all, actually about as good a followup as you could have hoped for. But, as soon as the comedy overtook the hard edge, it was all downhill. As mush as I'd like to see wild-haired, crazy-eyed, riggs back in action, or see Murtaugh do that neck-loosening thing before he blows the bad guy away, that's not gonna' happen. If this gets made, it'll be more Police Academy than Lethal Weapon.
Besides, doesn't Mel need to do a 21st Century version of Braveheart, followed by one set in the future. (I mean he's basically covered all the other time periods with the original, The Patriot, and we were Soldiers).

Can Pesci and Glover carry a movie?

    by chilli kramer

Anyone seen Gone Fishin'? The answer is no. So get Mel in. Combine it with that Jesus flick if you want, that'll get him on board: "Lethal Savior! This time it's biblical!" Course, all that 'God hates me' dialogue might be an awkward fit, but write it in Latin or Aramaic and Mel will never know.

    Reply to Talkback

  • That is a good idea, make the whole movie one big homosexual plug for the gay community. If Danny and Mel can be in tune with their "other" sides, then so can the rest of the world.....................COME ON LET'S GET REAL HERE. What the hell am I talking about? I don't know what idea is more crazy, my story line, or theirs? If this movie happens, there is only one thing that can save it. Strong storyline and a good cast. No matter how they mess with it. Just get a whole new cast, start a whole new LW franchise. I think anyone would see a good movie.

I for one, love the Lethal Weapon movies.I for one, really enjoyed the 4th and thought it was a great way to end a great series. I for one also think this guy is full of shit because there ISN'T going to be a Lethal Weapon 5. Joel Silver has said numerous times there isn't going a LW5. So, it would make more sense to take the word of the producer of the series rather than some fan with a made-up piece of news. This reminds me of last week when someone wrote in saying all that B.S. about "X-Men 2" (their $240 budget,Halle Berry wanting more money,Bryan Singer not giving a shit).Even if they were going to make a Lethal Weapon 5,there would be no fucking way in hell they'd kill off Riggs. Can you imagine a LW movie with Martin Riggs...it just wouldn't work and I think Richard Donner and Joel Silver would know that.Lethal Weapon 4,even though critics panned it,was a great, fun movie and a nice way to end it all,and I think they should and will leave it like that.Even if they do make LW5,they won't do it with Mel,I can guarentee you all that.

The fourth had a few decent action scenes, Jet Li, and pretty much nothing else. But killing off Riggs? WTF. Why don't they just say Riggs gets to retire since he's now been shot like 8 times in the line of duty? There's an irony - Riggs retiring before Murtaugh...

I can't believe people think Mel Gibson is too 'important' now to do this. The other thing - he has about 38 kids - that we know of. And they're probably lazy as dirt. He will need to make all the cash he can to pay for their rehab, therapy, legal fees, etc. I agree with SilvioDante (?) - make it ultra violent. Who will be the bad guy in Lethal Weapon 5? space aliens?!! ____I can see it now: Martin Riggs is driving his truck back to his shitty, run-down trailer house on the beach. Suddenly a UFO hovers above Riggs truck and a bright beams sucks the vehicle up into the spacecraft. Riggs unloads clip after clip of bullets out the drivers side window at the UFO, but to no avail. The UFO ascends into the cloudtops and disappears. Three days pass. Sgt. Roger Murtaugh (who has tried to retire the past 15 years, alas unsuccessfully) convinces most of LAPD to search for Riggs, with the promise of free "END APARTHEID" bumper stickers to cops who volunteer. They search for several days but turn up nothing. Suddenly a call comes in that a 50ish looking, naked white man with the atypical white man's tight ass (ladies take notice...again) and a pissed off, manaical look on his face is wandering the desert outside L.A. Murtaugh immediatey drives out in his 1970's model beat-to-shit station wagon and picks up Riggs. He finds Riggs with unusual examination scars...and of course, another dislocated shoulder. Martin vents at Roger: "Oh Roger...I'm really pissed off now, Roger. I'm gonna get those fuckin' extraterrestrial pricks. I'm not a cop tonight, Roger. I'm not a cop tonight..." Leo Getz shows up and vents his anger at the aliens as well: "Ok, Ok, Ok...THEY FUCK YOU IN THE EXAMINATION ROOM!"

SOOOO MANNYYY movies copied it with the fucked cop who was bent on killing everyone storyline to this day.(Diehard being it's only worthy successor and a classic in it's own right) They just need to leave anything that has to do with this series alone. Even the title. Please don't make Donner waste his time on bullshit like this either. Give me a Moon Knight movie Goddammit! Now! Okay, so I was the only person on the planet who read the comic when I was younger. Just fucking make it and I'll put on the black nikes and drink the kool-aid.

    "We'll thing is"...?

    by mynamedoesn'tfit

What the hell does that mean? In any case, this sounds like total crap. If it gets made, Mel should do it with the dialogue in ancient Sumerian with no subtitles.

    Don't Stop There

    by grand pere

Why bother with Danny Glover. Have Riggs' kid age superfast and team with Chris Rock's character (Murtagh's son in law) to avenge the deaths of their fathers.

    I heard it's a prequel...

    by franksirmarco

It's going to follow a young Riggs and Murtaugh through their years at a magical school of Law Enforcement.

Murtaugh will constantly mutter, "I'm too young for this shit!"

Riggs will constantly get in trouble for breaking other students necks.

I actually think LW 2 is by far the best in the series.

    by bigtuna

I think it's one of the best american action films ever made also. It had the perfect blend of action and comedy and was oh so entertaining. By the 4th film, the comedy got old and annoying and the action scenes were so over-the-top I felt like I was watching a cartoon.

I thought Danny Glover Didn't Want This

    by crm114

I recall reading that he was through with this, and that furthermore he had qualms about further glorifying the LAPD in light of, oh, one hundred years or so of bad race relations.

I think Mr. Glover is wonderful in lead parts like "To Sleep With Anger". If he didn't "carry" these other movies, maybe it's because they were bad movies and he was given nothing to do but stand around making faces?

Feel free to ignore my opinion on the grounds that I didn't like the first LW and haven't seen the sequels.

yeah, props to PREDATOR 2! underrated!

    by tall_boy

The Predator just rocks and Glover was suffiently badass in that to carry it. "Alright! Who's next?!" as for LW5 without Mel - it'd tank.

  • ...instead of Richard Donner, we could get George Romero to direct & Tom Savini to do the gore makeup. We could hire hundreds of extras from the greater Pittsburgh,PA area to play zombies. Romero can make sure LW5 would be full of mass amounts of dismemberment, pig intestines, bucketloads of Dick Smith formula blood, and bad actors whose one talent is to scream really well when the zombies rip off Savini's makeup appliances on cue! Mel Gibson could play the recently deceased Martin Riggs...aka, the "Riggs Zombie"! In fact, with the proper budget, Romero could have the entire city of L.A. infected and thus resurrected as zombies. I can see it now: Sgt. Murtaugh(wearing his girdle), firing his gun at millions of approaching zombies, muttering "I'm too old for this shit!"

    okay...

    by mithril

all fine and good, but Riggs is the "lethal weapon"! What a re you gonna do - call it the "Dead Lethal Weapon"? Sheesh! And everyone watched those films for Riggs and for the camaraderie. Murtaugh by himself is dull as toast.

    that pesky pesci

    by iron_monkey

What if Joe Pesci turned out to be the father of Rene Russo's child? That would work wonders.

You know Murtaugh's mother tried to breastfeed him when he was four years old...he replied "I'm too old for this tit". Appalling joke I know, irresistable though.

Ugh. Lethal Weapon 3 and 4 sucked ass big time, so...

    by neofromthematrix

I seriously doubt that Lethal 5 will somehow reveal itself to be a masterpiece, or at the very least a pretty good action flick.

Mel Gibson in Road Warrior: Convergence written by M. Night Shya

    by zinc_chameleon

Sorry for the digression, but a older, wiser Mad Max out in post-Apolcalyptic Australia would work if they made sure there were neat plot twists and surprises in the manner of M. Night Shyalaman.

No one will think of Mel in the same way after seeing 'Signs'; his minister persona would work well in most sci-fi venues.

    It's archetypal, my dear Watson.
