Marvin Nash flushes and flushes then hit the pot... this one is all about ANGER MANAGEMENT!

Published at:  Nov 15, 2002 6:54:56 AM CST

Harry here... Well, ya know how on that DARKNESS FALLS pair of reviews I was all high on Revolution Films? Well, this is the other side of that studio that I just loathe. The shit comedies they produce like THE HOT CHICK, AMERICA'S SWEETHEART, THE ANIMAL, MASTER OF DISGUISE, THE NEW GUY and TOMCATS. You remember those trailers? Hopefully you don't remember the films. Hopefully you shifted Nancy Reagan's advice about all natural herbs and fungi, and shifted it to saying no to those films. Well, after the wonder that was PUNCHDRUNK LOVE and the upcoming ABOUT SCHMIDT, you might've been tricked by a trailer featuring Jack Nicholson and Adam Sandler... Except, AICN and this poor wretched soul is here to save you. I wanted to call this spy Kevorkian, but he chose the name Marvin Nash. Well, here... Flush when you're done....

Hello Harry and co.

I guess nobody else wrote in yet about Tuesday's test screening of "Anger
Management" so here's a quick scoop on it for you if you're interested.

It's a "hilarious new comedy" starring the unlikely and quite frankly,
ill-suited duo of Adam Sandler and...Jack Nicholson(!?). Sandler plays a
regular Joe who gets falsely accused of an air rage incident in assaulting a
flight attendant, and is sentenced to attend an anger management class that
is run by Jack (who was actually sitting next to him on the plane). The group
is filled with oddball cult actors like John Turturro as a psycho and the
great Luis Guzman as a gay gangster, at least I think that's what he was
supposed to be, it was never really clear.

Sandler gets partnered with Turturro as his "anger buddy" for reasons
which are never quite explained, and they immediately get into a bar fight,
and Sandler is arrested again (although for some reason Turturro doesn't
appear in court with him, even though he started the whole thing??).

This is where The Plot kicks in, as Jack decides that to cure Sandler's
anger problems, for some reason he has to move in with him for 30 days to
observe his day-to-day life, at home and at work and with his friends etc.
Oh, the wackiness! From hereon, it's basically one contrived sitcom style
situation after another. I'll give you a painful example- there's only one
bed in Sandler's apartment, so...yes, wait for it...they have to sleep in the
same bed! Sandler is obviously horrified at this, but of course he doesn't
leave the bed as it wouldn't be as "hilarious" if he opted to sleep on the
couch or floor, would it. This is the kind of film where people don't make
logical, ordinary decisions because it wouldn't be, uh, as funny if they did.
The central gag of the film here is that Sandler is actually a well-adjusted
regular guy, it's just that everyone around him is highly strung and
irritating, which pushes him into the occasional angry outburst. He's playing
the kind of nice guy Jim Carrey role and doesn't really do any of his
trademark goofy antics. However don't think that he's suddenly gone all
highbrow after Punch drunk love, because it's just strictly formulaic lowbrow
humor here; and don't get fooled into thinking this will be something special
because Jack's in it.

Jack's been on a roll lately with As good as it gets, The Pledge and About
Schmidt, but sadly all good things must come to an end, and this is the end.
Doing fart gags in an Adam Sandler movie...not exactly a career highlight,
this is easily his worst movie probably since "Man trouble".

Oh, Marisa Tomei is in it too, as Sandler's girlfriend. I'd actually
forgotten all about her, which tells you how great her role is. So...not a
recommended film, but then again it's going to make a ton of money, so what
do I know! I gave it a generous "fair" because I laughed (although never
really, really laughed) at about 1 out of every 10 jokes.

call me Marvin Nash

What, you didn't expect a classic from the director of "Nutty Professor 2," "The Naked Gun 3" and "My Fellow Americans?" Quick note, Hollywood: When a guy shows zero penchant for comedy, DON'T HIRE HIM FOR ANY MORE COMEDIES. (OK yes, he did direct "Tommy Boy" - even a blind squirrel gets a nut sometimes. Not enough reason to keep him employed.)

Certainly this film sounds a lot better than those other films Harry mentioned. Plus, the cast sounds great. I'll rent it and probably get at least a few laughs, I mean, c'mon.

    This movie sounds top-notch

The reviewer obviously doesn't go in for Sandler movies and is prejudiced. I mean, really, how many comedies actually make sense? Would Cameron Diaz REALLY have taken the semen from Ben Stiller's ear and put it in her hair in real life, even if it really was hair gel? No. But it was funny as shit when her hair was standing on end. The mark of true comedy is zaniness, irrationality, and non-sensical behavior. This movie sounds like it has all that and more! I can't wait. And just for the record, the fact that this guy liked The Pledge proves he doesn't know what he's talking about. Nicholson has never hammed it up so badly as he did in that movie. Terrible stuff.

"Billy Madison" is the only Sandler written film I feel I must own.

Oh, this movie sounds incredibly stupid. Wasn't the "gay gangster" thing also played out w. no laughs in Gore "Craptacular" Verbinski's "The Mexican"?

uhhhhhhhh..."The Pledge" was probably in the top 25 best films of the last decade. That movie is the un-official sequel to "Get Carter." Genious. Sean Penn has made three excellent films and still, only outside of Geek Circles and Roger Ebert columns he's only remembered as the guy who gets in a lot of fights and dated so and so. Bullshit. That's why Hollywood is fucked because they instead of recognizing talent, they get people who encourage the stupid mastabatory fantasies of a public that likes their movies dumb and their explosions big. "the Pledge" is neo-noir and one of the best current examples next to "One False Move" which is one of my favourite movies (oh, and "L.A. Confidental" is not neo-noir, if you really want to nit-pick with a sub-genre). But "the Pledge" really examined the point that with an investigation involving the deepest of human emotions how a detective can cross that line between obsession and dedication and how that line is constantly blurred. It is a great film. And I have to say, I do not like "As Good As it Gets," even though Kinnear was excellent, proving his should get more roles (see "Auto Focus") with substance though that one ran close to caricature. The movie was just ... I don't know, heavy handed social statement? I just find it hard to swallow a film where one major character has all the right answers and is a beacon to everyone else with her "sassy New York attitude." Just don't cut it with me. Oh yeah, see "Far From Heaven," best film I've seen this year, a marvelous film. Oh, but be a film geek and it helps if you've actually seen movies from before the 1960s without Citizen or Kane in the title. Sorry, that sounded snobbish but well, you have to have some rapport with that style of acting or you are going to find the movie silly and horribly acted. Same thing with people and their view of Jennifer Jason Leigh's acting in "The Hudsucker Proxy." Though this is a much more serious film. Alright, enough...

    Rough Cut

    by zigmondsrh

This film doesn't even come out until next summer. The cut that was screened was VERY rough. I believe this was told to Marvin at the begining of the film. How can Marvin rush to judgment on a film that is only 40% completed?

    zigmondsrh re: rough cut

    by maxcalifornia.

Zigmond, why are you criticising the guy for posting a review? I've been to test screenings for films that aren't coming out for another six months where we're told we're the "very first audience to see this!", and these "rough cuts" are almost always 99% identical to the finished product, except for the musical score. So, 40% complete, where did you get that from? It's a comedy that doesn't sound like it's got any huge special FX set pieces to be added, so if they're ready to show it to audiences, it's pretty much complete. And even if it was unfinished, you can't build a decent house if you've got bad foundations, and Jack Nicholson doing fart jokes sounds like some very bad foundations indeed!
