From France comes a look at TREASURE PLANET!

Published at:  Nov 11, 2002 6:56:45 AM CST

Hey folks, Harry here... I'm really pulling for TREASURE PLANET, cuz Disney (and animation companies in general) need critical and financial successes every which way to ensure that the medium stays healthy and vital. And personally I love 2D animation, and the biggest difference between it and the 3D work is that recently the 3D animation has had better stories.

Hello, I'm french so excuse my low english level... here in Paris this animated feature is playing since November 6th. Here is my review if you are interested.

Biff Tannen

Hey Harry, I have hopes that this can be interesting to you. Here in France, the new Disney flick Treasure Planet is playing exclusively in 1 theater in Paris since November 6th and I caught it last night. As far as I can say, I didn't read one single negative review of the movie, and personally, I don't know how you could write one. Ok, it has not the most original story, design, twists etc...some CGI elements are too much "in your face" stuff, the one song is not particularly memorable either... but it has everything a truly great Disney movie should have although it doesn't surprise you: all in all great animation (Glen Keane's Silver character is just awesome, the animator gave him so much live), some cool setpieces (the arrival on the Spaceport, the introduction of Jim on his solarsurf, the climax...), good characters that you care for (the bond between Jim and Silver is really great!), great story that really follows the original book, and a descent score (no it's not as good as previous James Newton Howard's stuff). Despite the "blockbuster" feeling of it, I thought that the film had warmth and heart, you truly get the feeling that the directors care for their movie, even the ending is subtle and not "breathtaking animation to show you our latest 3D programs". The sideckicks were original and funny, which is pretty rare those times! That's another good point: the movie has an impressive cast of awesome characters. They seem to pop up from Men In Black of Star Wars but they are really original. I loved everyone of them and they provide many laughs, even if you're an adult.

The only negative aspect of the movie is that due to its length, all of the events seem rushed. You'd like to wander on the ship, fly around the speceport, look around, see the characters live normally on the RMS Legacy...instead it's one situation after another, you don't lose time (and costly animation), but of course you never get bored. In my case, I wish it lasted 2h30 instead of 1h30, that would have improved the movie in my opinion. All in all, a great Disney movie, targeted to the whole family, that follows the strict rules of this kind of film, but never disappoints you. Check it out when it comes out November 27th, and if you can, on an Imax screen!

    mon dieu! le plant!

No, seriously this looks decent enough. What gave them the idea to do a futuristic Treasure Island? Also thank god it's only the VOICES of Martin Short & David Hyde Pierce in this, because the two of them together in a movie would surely cause intestinal cramps.

I am thinking the film will become Titan A.E. It'll suck. Joesph G. Levi as the main? No fucking way! See Harry Potter for a second time. Sure its visiionary and soooooo lame.

    SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT

The TV previews that just started running this week look pretty terrific. My kids are a little old for this. They will watch cartoons on video but rarely in the theater. Ah well. I must say TP seems to resemble however slightly ATLANTIS, which my youngest (a 14-year-old female) and I thoroughly enjoyed -- but only on video. She generally will not go to see a cartoon in the theater anymore. We missed ICE AGE for that very reason and I for one can't wait to see it on video. Ditto with those two competing Aztec-type comedies from a year or two back. The one where the guy turns into a llama absolutely grabs her. She watches these films repeatedly on video, but she did not want to see them in the theater. Last film she went to: EIGHT LEGGED FREAKS. Last cartoon she went to: SPIRIT OF THE -- whatever. She did want to see that one in the theater. Horses, after all. She rides.

It would be nice to see TP succeed.......

...I'd hate to think Disney relies on Pixar alone for box office hits/future beloved classics! But to Disney Animation's credit, I thought Lilo & Stitch was terrific and it did some respectable box office.

How the hell did Disney copy off of Star Wars?

    by pgm82

Lion what the fuck are you talking about? How did Disney steal the idea of Star Wars from George Lucas. Treasure Planet is based on Treasure Island the book you dumb fuck. What, just because Star Wars and Treasure Planet happen to be in the same genre of Science Fiction that means they are the same movie. Get a clue asshole.

Shee-yut, the French are getting to see this first?

    by wardog

Plant or not (and I'm not going to assume that--how can we really know?) Treasure Planet is going to have to leak out something it contains that is REALLY FUCKING IMPRESSIVE for me to want to see it. Stevenson's Treasure Island was one of the first complete novels I ever read, and I love it too much to just jump for this new outer-space version. Shithead Disney morons, they always fuck up the true classics.

  • First of all, the main character looks, dresses and sounds just Anakin. Second, the panning CGI city shots are rip-off of lucas's SW cities.. they have the same "feel"... and dont even try to deny that.

Third, the main character (we'll call him Anakin), rides a jet surfboard across what appears to be Tatooine. They even have the weird Arizona rock formations and everything.

And all that is from the trailer alone. To rub it, Dinsey is actually running TV spots saying Treasure Planet is "Star Wars meets Treasure Island"... I rest my case. Disney should be ashamed.
