The U.S. Trailer for Polanski's THE PIANIST tickles the keys!
Hey folks, Harry here... My one sadness upon missing Cannes this year was not getting a chance to see THE PIANIST early. I feel the same way about Polanski's films the way I do with Brian DePalma. I miss their majesty, their audacity and their grandeur.
When the Palm D'or went to THE PIANIST, I was cheering here in Austin. The reviews we had received confirmed that the film was greatness. The alleged masterpiece of his career. "The Masterpiece" in a career with REPULSION and CHINATOWN and THE TENANT and ROSEMARY'S BABY? Glory be!
The agony of watching this film unfurl throughout the world, but moving at a snail's pace to come here... Agony. It's getting a limited release here on December 27th. Probably just a New York and Los Angeles sort of thing to qualify for the Academy Awards. It'll probably open wider in January and February - thus making it impossible for it to appear on my Top Ten of the year list, as it won't be playing in Austin, unless they are going to be doing advance screenings for the press for inclusion on the various society of film critic awards lists. Whatever the case, the anticipation I currently have for ADAPTATION, CHICAGO and of course TWO TOWERS... THE PIANIST has the same fervor of anticipation. Simply, I can't see this one soon enough!

I was vaguely aware that Polanski made a movie by this title, but basically know nothing about it. Anybody wanna clue me in? It's hard for me to get past the whole child molestation thing with Polanski.
-
Hey everyone!
Honestly, Polanski is today one of the most brilliant directors, since all other ones are dead or corrupt!

Who exactly are you ranting at? If it is me who you are calling a 'cunt' and telling to 'fuck off', then I think that begs the question: why? What did my simple question about the premise of the Pianist do to inspire such rage from within you? Some couseling may be in order, methinks.

BUTT-HEAD: ..like that kid, Choder, who pays the piano. He's a p
by osmosis jones
BEAVIS: No way, Butt-Head, you shouldn't call a kid that just because he plays the piano! ~ BUTT-HEAD: But that's what they're called, "pianists". ~ BEAVIS: Really? We should go down to that piano store in the mall, and just start saying, "Pianist, pianist, pianist..." ~ BUTT-HEAD: Yeah! We should DO that!

This trailer has been available for ages. That said, The Pianist does look pretty darn good. Hating on Polanski is just idiotic.

besides accidentally hitting the enter button? well, i hate the fact that no one who runs this site seems to know how to keep the fucking talkback IN ORDER!

This particular unthinking sheep thought The Pianist pretty damn good--but then, I actually believe all that propoganda about the Holocaust actually happening and stuff.

DePalma and Paul Schrader put out their best reviewed movies in a while, and Polanski looks set to bait Oscar. What other '70s auteurs are set for a comeback?

Never had the chance to work with him, but damn did we score some good 'poozle'. Thank Heaven for little girls. Jack introduced me to him while he was making Chinatown. Back then Jack and I were tight. I was upset because Jack chose to use the name 'Gittes' as his character's surname. He should have chose Schneider, even Rafelson, hell, even Blauner. After all we made him, he'd still be doing biker movies if it wasn't for BBS. But he chose Gittes, after Harry Gittes, one of Jack's 'lame-o' pals. Nevertheless, times were good then. Polanski gave me his blessing to Exec Produce The Two Jakes. Jack didn't want me. I had to hear the news from my brother Harold, which sucked because he doesn't exactly wear a velvet glove. But I digress. Damn shame Polanski never made it back to America, we could have partied in our old age. I am pushing 70 but I am sure glad I was around to see the newest phase of teenybopper stars, ah Britney. I remember the bubblegum days of the 60's when me and Rafelson produced the Monkees. They were more Ben Franks type than N'Sync, nevertheless they encouraged me to grow my hair out and wear green velvet suits. It was fun, the fast lane music life, lots and lots of fun. Polanski would tell you the same. It's over for the Schneids...

Is that the title character actually plays the song 'Seventeen' by Winger. A little sly injoke from ol Roman.

And DEATH AND THE MAIDEN is another Polanski film that is completely brilliant.

Bring it on. I could use something to remind me what a good flick is after this year. And why the hell is Spirited Away being kept in the stereo cabinet? It's the best flick of the year so far.

The Piano + Holocaust = Suck. Okay, I haven't seen the movie so that is obviously not necessarily true, but I just want to rant about it cause I would LOVE movies on both topics... just.. not together. I love piano music-- super love Concerto in F by Gershwin as played by Oscar Levant in "American in Paris". Actually, anything with Oscar Levant including "Rhythm on the River" with Bing Crosby. And Fats Waller is so great with his FISTFUL of KEYS.. you can hear it at redhotjazz.com along with clips of lots of other early jazz musicians. Fats Waller also plays "African Ripples" as well... there are so many stories to tell with piano players... even the rigors of being a concert pianist--- I would really enjoy a movie on that topic. (Also the musician Alicia Keys changed her last name to Keys because the piano is GREAT.) So a movie about a piano player is an interesting idea. As for the Holocaust, I think there are important and powerfully cinematic movies to still be made. What about the sicko scientists that used the concentration camps as testing grounds? Doesn't that resonate today with our ability to manipulate genetic material? I mean, the idea of massive technical expertise without any moral context is extremely important. Of course, a Holocaust movie that would be effective is the cinematic "Stairs of Death" about the concentration camp quarry at Mauthausen. There are still important stories to tell about the Holocaust that are relevant today.... but I have other films on my wishlist than this one. Music transcends suffering in the way that comedy transcends suffering in "Life is Beautiful" and I hope this film is as good.
