Why is Joe Dante a God' And LOONEY TUNES BACK IN ACTION has coolness!

Published at:  Oct 28, 2002 5:33:54 AM CST

Hey folks, Harry here... Ya know, sometimes when you hear all sorts of scary things about a project, but you don't know about it personally... ya just trust in a name. When I was hearing terrible things about LOONEY TUNES: BACK IN ACTION back before it started shooting, I just sat on it because I had faith in Joe Dante. The rumors were circling that Brendan Frasier was wanting to leap off the project, that they didn't have a script a week before shooting... then there was the infamous massive commercial tie-in rumors, which turned up to be not for the film, but for parallel marketing deals. Well through it all, I placed my faith in one name... JOE DANTE.

Why? First off, Joe Dante understands Warner Brothers animated mayhem. GREMLINS, GREMLINS 2 and SMALL SOLDIERS all exhibited a finely tuned madcap mental unhinging obviously brought about by overdoses of Jones, Freleng, Clampett and Avery. Yup, ol Tex, Bob, Friz and Chuck drop anvils, cross-dress and pass out exploding cigars in Dante's soul... I just know it. And I have faith in the man, even as I have no faith in the studio.

As if to prove my faith, FANGORIA recently visited the set of Dante's latest and they got to watch the bringing to life of AREA 52 filled with replicas from world class collector Bob Burns as created by KNB (who just picked up the BEST MAKE-UP AWARD at Sitges for their work on CABIN FEVER!) In the film, Fangoria is reporting that you'll see the Metaluna Mutant, the Man From Planet X, the Robot Monster, Daleks, a Triffid, a Fiend without a face, a seed pod from... well, you know plus Kevin McCarthy too!!! And if that wasn't enough... Robby the Robot is appearing again!

God I love Joe Dante! To read all the details, Click here and read Fango's Whole Report!

Damn right Harry, Dante's a god.

    by rawshark

The Gremlins movies, Matinee, all great. And real Daleks are intelligent and talk.

Paul Thomas Anderson is not Paul Anderson.

    by lujho

So why would Harry think that Alien vs Predator will be great? He hates Paul Anderson, who is doing AVP, and Loves Paul Thomas Anderson, who has nothing to do with AvP.

Clampett, Avery, Jones and MCKIMSON. Remember HIM?

    by kingkarll

C'mon guy-if yer gonna prattle on about Warner Bros-leaving out 'Portable Holes' McKimson is, uh, unfortunate. He was good too......the flick sounds like MonkeyBone Too. No wonder Fraser is going 'I want my Mummy!'(Three is the charm? Bring back Benny)....Bob Burns-as in 'Spencer, Tracy and Kong'-Tracy 'Trained By' Bob Burns? Hmmmmmm the plot sickens....

  • They're in the same vein as Gremlins and Small Soldiers, only with a tad more personality traits between them. And I am ready to see some Chuck Jones subversive and callous wit style humor from these Looney Tunes, not that commercialized Space Jam type.

    Remember Twilight Zone: The Movie?

    by miserablebastard

Anyone who remembers Joe Dante's contribution to that film could see that he's got what it takes to do a live-action Looney Toons. That had some insane moments. He's the perfect choice for his.

    Harry...

    by bad guy

if you're gonna talk about Dante's past "Looney Tunes-like" past work, what about his segment in the TWILIGHT ZONE movie? The one about the little boy who could pretty much do anything. Parts of that were practically a live action cartoon. As far as Joe Dante being a god, personally, I love THE HOWLING, still my favorite werewolf movie, and I think the GREMLINS flicks are fun entertainment but that's pretty much it. SMALL SOLDIERS? Crap. MATINEE? Overrated. The guy's got a spotty filmography. Come on, Harry. A god?? Why, because he's got an eye for "genre" in-jokes? I love this site, and obviously you're entitled to your opinion, but really, man. Relax.

    Dante is...

    by margot_tenenbaum

...the WORST of the baby boomer child-men that took over Hollywood in the 80s (closely followed by John Landis). How many references to ROBOT MONSTER can one director make in his career anyway?

Is Joe Dante the keeper of a key to alternate dimensions?

    by weedymcsmokey

And, is that because Gremlins 2 was better than Gremlins? The only case that I can think of where the sequel was actually smarter, funnier and more subversive than the original. Dante did what no one else could do - and yes I am aware that Godfather 2 was just as good as the first, and some say better (But, I add an asterisk because that's really all one movie from the same source). I'm not sure what this will mean to future generations, but clearly it will involve long meanignful study by thousands of ill-tempered monkeys.

Meg Ryan is sooooo fuckin' hot in that, it's not even funny (I'm a sucker for a tight, leather miniskirt). "Jack Putter machine, zero defects. Ahhhh! God help us."

All of those wonderful robots and aliens should MORE than make up for the lack of a cohesive script.

Hi. I'm the guy who wrote the Fango bit and the stuff on the CHUD boards and just wanted to share with you a quote from producer/writer Larry Doyle. "The models we're using are pretty reminiscent to the 1949 McKimson models that were used by Freleng and Jones in the late forties through the fifties, the early fifties, anyway. So, basically there's a model that people primarily associate with the peak of the series. You can have all kinds of arguments about what the peak of the series is, but we picked the one that people know from Duck Dodgers and Ali Baba Bunny, but they're all kind of cool."

    Matinee

    by philmaker

Matinee is my personal favorite Joe Dante film. Next to Ed Wood, it is the most underrated and least seen "film world" movie ever. If you haven't seen it, do so. You'll never forget "Mant"! Half man, half ant. It's Mant!

  • To my mind, Explorers was one of the best films of the 80's with one of the worst endings. It actually had kids acting like real kids. Holy shit, they even shared a beer!
Placing real characters in unreal circumstances always works for me and Dante has showed he can pull it off with the best of them.

I really need to buy that DVD. I thought that movie was funny as hell when I caught it in theaters and such a departure from the original. Dante didn't make the same movie like other directors who play it safe by making a replica of the original (Brett and Barry I'm talkin' to you). Then again Gremlins 2 was a box office disappointment, got mixed reviews and was virtually forgotten about over the last 10 years. I couldn't even find the video copy of it for rent or purchase until its recent DVD release. That really should be the next movie I buy. Gremlins 2, here I come.

Just the guy for the job !

    by robinp

I've been an admirer of Dante's work for a loooong time. If anybody can bring the Looney Tunes back to the screen, full of their original spirit, this is the guy ! He's been woefully overlooked for years now, but look at the guy's work. He's a genius !!!
