Edison Carter Has Some Small-Screen TWO TOWERS News For You!!

Published at:  Oct 24, 2002 8:36:08 AM CDT

Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab.

Edison sent us a memo today that is going to be part of a press release in the days ahead, but I feel guilty about how long it’s taking to wade through this entire FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING Extended Edition DVD. I’m going to review it as soon as I’ve seen the whole thing. The commentaries alone require 15 hours of viewing time, though, so it’s not a simple thing. Here’s a wee bit of news to tide you over for the next few days...

The WB is thrilled to announce that we have secured an exclusive behind-the-scenes preview special for the year's most anticipated film: "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers." This one-hour special is scheduled for air December 4th in the 8pm time period.

"Return to Middle-Earth" follows the 'Rings' celebrated cast as they come back together in New Zealand to shoot additional footage for the upcoming film "The Two Towers." Each cast member gives their personal take on the arduous three-year shoot and what they took away from this historic
filmmaking experience.

The WB audience will be treated to multiple world premiere clips from "The Two Towers," including and extended look at the film's climactic battle sequence.

Ummmmmmm... okay. Let me see it right now. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please...

"Moriarty" out.

This is actually a "Double Scoop"...

    by damitol

You just told us what one of the extras on the 2 disk theatrical release of the DVD (probably) next August will be. I wonder is Sci-Fi is brewing up another special as well? Considering the glowing reviews everywhere of the extended Fellowship DVD, I may have to build a new shelf just for my LOTR DVDs. Not that I'm complaining or anything...

    15 hours of commentaries?

    by monkey lover

Jesus. Who is gonna listen to all that? And is it true that in order to fit on all these commentaries they have split the film over two discs? If so, that is the dumbest-ass decision ever. Why make you change discs just so you can hear some special effects guy talk about some boring computer shit you don't care about?

    by monster rain

I hope this special is going to be a really good look at the making of the film, etc. and not just one of those EPK-style promos with Mr. Voice saying, "Take a spellbiding journey beyond imagination...to Middle-earth." Oh, who am I kidding? Even if it is, I'm still going to watch it! Also, there's a good interview with Peter Jackson here: http://www.orlandomultimedia.net/news2002/oct/news10222002c.html

They did it to encode the audio and video at super high quality. Commentary tracks don't take up much space.

    Helm's Deep is Climax???

    by dannychico

Wait a second. If Helm's deep is the climax, are they just chopping off everything that happens after it in the book? Like, oh, say, the Storming of Isengard? PJ better not be rearranging the chronology of events to put Helm's Deep at the end of the movie just because it is the biggest action set piece.

They fit Titanic on one disc...

    by monkey lover

And Braveheart and The English Patient and all those other massively long films. So what is up with this crazy ass splittage? It is shit having to change a disc halfway through. Those old Warner Bros. ones from around 1998 did it all the time and it vexed my royal ass.

    Monkeylover, can't you read???

    by minderbinder

You can fit ten hours of video on a DVD if you want, but it will look like shit. They split the movie so they could have good quality audio AND video. Now are you going to ask this same question again?

Like you were going to sit there and watch a now almost 4 hour movie without stopping it once. Don't you have to pee? Eat? Answer the phone? Use the disc change as a break from watching. *** This disc will also have a DTS audio track which takes a HUGE amount of data. Yet another reason they've split it on 2 discs, besides the commentaries, etc. This disc set "ownz" as my 'net brethren would say.

    by nazismasher

Simple as that. The theatrical version DVD is there for you, Monkey Lover. You didn't seem to be thrilled with the film to begin with so why invest the time and money on a more elaborate cut meant to indulge hard core fans and discerning DVD collectors that appreciate the superior transfer, pristine audio, etc. The whole reasoning of putting it on one disk and expending with the luxuries is just so spurious. If it's some sort of personnal preference, cool. I can respect that kind of complaint, but let's not carry on with some faux-naif comportment. This is the Lamborghini of DVD's. I suggest you ride the bus.

Dannychico, he didn't say that Helm's Deep was the climax, he said that at Helm's Deep he would climax. Its a subtle difference yes, but important enough that I've been mildly nauseated.

WB managed to secure the Two Towers special? I don't believe it! I mean, it's not like WB is owned by the same company that owns New Line or anything... this is a major coup for WB.

... is a widely accepted British word. Therefore by calling me an "ass" for using it, you are effectively insulting all British people. And where do most of the actors in your precious LOTR come from? Britain! Twat.

is just the excuse I need to retire my single-disc DVD to the bedroom and buy a multi-disc player for the living room. Hell, Sony and Toshiba 5-disc changers, to name a couple, can be had for about $180 US... much less than I paid for 'old faithful'!
