Got this in from STORM the other day. Kind of speaks for itself, so I will quote him
directly:
“Larry Fishburne and a massive film crew took over a large part of Los
Angeles' Leimert Park last night (and possibly more than that) for filming
on his upcoming HBO flick, "Socrates," about a paroled convict
reintegrating into society (allegedly). He was there, pretty friendly
with a shaved head and a big smile."
Sometime last week (I think) I mentioned a Superbowl commercial that would feature
Jerry Seinfeld and (probably) Superman. The same report also mentioned Drew Carey
being visited by representatives of DC Comics, who were meeting with him to discuss
how to “use” some of the DC character statuettes frequently used on Carey’s show as
background decor.
DAVID ADDISON and MADDIE HAYES (not related to Michael Hayes) wrote me up,
with a few more thoughts on how and why this has all come to pass:
“It should be noted that it isn't a surprise to see "the DC Comics
people" strategizing with the CAREY producers about showcasing some
superheroes. CAREY is produced by Warner Bros. TV, a division of
Time-Warner, which also owns DC Comics. Can you say synergy?”
“On the subject, Jerry Seinfeld himself is a new employee of
Time-Warner, thanks to the Turner merger, which brought Castle Rock
into the Time-Warner family. Castle Rock, of course, produces
SEINFELD, so a Seinfeld-DC Comics union was inevitable, even if only
for a commercial.”
Dick (“You just fucked with the wrong guy!”) Jones messaged AICN about a little cable
ditty coming up called “The Night Flier”.
((Glen Note: I kind of thought the word "Flier" should be spelled with a "y". None the less, the
person who has seen the film spells the word with an "i", and the Internet Movie Database lists
the title as being spelled with an "i", so I will differ to their judgement.
Looks kind of weird though...))
“I got a chance to check out my old nemesis Bob Morton, a.k.a. Miguel
Ferrer, in THE NIGHT FLIER. I know, I know, it's the 374th Stephen King
horror movie, and most of those have been pretty lame of late, but this one
delivers. A major reason is Miguel himself; his character, a tabloid
scumbag named Richard Dees who's trying to track down the Cessna-flying
vampire of the title, is a compelling, deeply flawed man who's spent so
much time immersed in the sordid world of the paper he writes for that he
seems to have lost his soul. But instead of being hateful, you can't take
your eyes off the guy, and Ferrer effortlessly carries the movie in what is
undoubtedly one of the best lead performances in a horror movie in years.”
“The rest of the movie is pretty good too; it's down and dirty, without a
lot of the dumb-ass humor that's spoiled so many scary flicks of late.
Most of the Night Flier's mayhem is committed in flashbacks on characters
we don't get to know, so it's not as scary as it could have been, but the
gritty atmosphere and Ferrer's acting keep it interesting. And then, in
the last 20 minutes, the filmmakers pull out all the stops and deliver a
really chilling, long final sequence. Again, I don't want to give anything
away, but when Ferrer finally catches up to the Flier at a deserted airport
(well, except for the two dozen or so dismembered victims lying around), be
prepared for some really shocking and atmospheric hardcore horror. There
are also a couple of comic/horrific gags (one involving a bathtub, another
involving a urinal) that'll have you giggling and shivering at the same
time.”
“THE NIGHT FLIER is premiering on HBO next month, but word has it the
filmmakers are also going to get it into theaters next year to follow up
the cable play, a la THE LAST SEDUCTION. While this isn't confirmed, I can
only say hold out to see this on the big screen, the only real place to
experience a horror movie anyway. One other thing--it'll be interesting to
see if, in light of recent events, any media watchdogs make a fuss about a
scene in which Ferrer comes upon a car wreck and starts snapping photos of
the mutilated victims...”
