JoBlo Talks To David Twohy About THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK!!

Published at:  Oct 10, 2002 9:40:56 AM CDT

Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab.

Nice work, guys. David Twohy’s got the groovy underwater ghost story BELOW coming out this weekend on a couple of hundred screens. He’s still barely being supported by Dimension, despite their limp TV campaign.

No matter how anemic the reaction to this film, though, and no matter how undeserved a death Miramax has condemned it to, Twohy’s already looking ahead, and I think he’s gearing up to do something that we should all pay close attention to. If he finally delivers on the promise of his genre work so far and makes something epic and original, we could be in for something really special.

And any news right now is good news, I say:

Hey all:

If interested, our recent interview with director David Twohy provided some insight into the production of the PITCH BLACK sequel, THE RIDDICK CHRONICLES:

CLICK HERE TO READ THE WHOLE STORY!!

Here are the basic passages on that:

-----------

How far along are you with the RIDDICK CHRONICLES?

We’re in pre-production. The script is finished and I’ve got my production designer on it. Right now we’re calling the series the CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK. We’re referring to them now as “C-1,” “C-2” and “C-3.” I’m plotting all three films as we pre-produce this first film. The reason why it’s “Chronicles” and not “Pitch Black 2” is because that would give a false impression of this next film, because not only are we changing genres – the first one was a horror film and this one will be action/adventure/sci-fi – but we’re also increasing the scope in such a way that isn’t true to the original film as well.

Are you planning to shoot “C-2” and “C-3” simultaneously?

If the first one justifies any follow-ups at all, then yeah, we’re thinking of doing 2 and 3 together.

Can you give us a peek at what THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK will be about?

All I can say is that it takes that Riddick character and follows him through multiple worlds as he meets multiple adversaries. There’s a lot of theology in it. Even though I’m not a religious guy, I am very interested in religion and why people turn to it. In BELOW I’m interested in why people turn to supernatural explanations when there are more plausible ones. I’m not a great believer in the supernatural either, but I find it fascinating when people turn to it.

You shot PITCH BLACK in Australia. Are you planning to shoot CHRONICLES there, too?

No. We would have gone back, but stage space was a little tight there. So we booked Vancouver and sucked up all of their available stage space, only to find out that Darren’s new film, THE FOUNTAIN, went down. He had a lot of stage space in Australia reserved and suddenly in the last two weeks all of that stage space has become available again. I would have loved to go to Australia, but now we’re booked into Vancouver, so I don’t think there’s any chance of switching back at this point.

Have you done any casting yet, other than Vin Diesel?

No.

Laters!

Berge Garabedian aka JoBlo

Awesome. Thanks for the heads-up, man.

"Moriarty" out.

This whole hype over the Chronicles of Riddick makes me laugh... wow let's all whack off over a cool title and proclaim it to be the best film ever... anyone ever thought that Pitch Black wasn't exactly that good, it was just OK, Twohy as a film maker is just OK, and he's just gonna milk a previous success just because he hopes he can get Vin Diesel back and have a big pay day

vin will probably require that he be this big hero, and get rid of the badass, mean attitude he has in PB. remember, he wanted to leave the religious dude and the girl behind. C-1 will just be XXX in space if they're not careful.

If you've experienced Rid-dick see your doctor immediately..

    by weedymcsmokey

..I thought Pitch Black was good - basically because it surprised me - but it was tightly paced and didn't suffer any tremendous plot-holes and the Gasman basically held it together with his take on the Steve McQueen anti-hero. Still the most impressing part? The crash landing right from the get-go - just excellent. That said, I don't think the character of Riddick has any life, because part of his charm in PB was that we didn't know a lot about him - other than everyone seemed to be afraid of him - reasons were not given. His character, I imagine, would be further delved into in this franchise - explaining the mystery and myth. It's like Lector, he's infinitely more interesting because we don't know what really makes him tick - then Hannibal (the book) told us all about why he is the way he is and no matter what the explaination is - it always feels inadequate to me.

KICKASS!!! NO CASTING EXCEPT VIN DIESEL!!!

    by the feral kid

Hell yes. That is great news. Ja Rule has been going around all the music networks (that will have him) saying that he's in the next Vin Diesel movie ("dat Riddick movie"). I certainly hope this isn't true, but it actually sounds like the type of shit that Dimension would pull. Busta Rhymes in "Halloween" not that the Halloween movies really have any respect as of late, but still... Which isn't to say that rapper can't act. Snoop Dogg was great in "Training Day," Busta Rhymes was actually an enjoyable presence in "Finding Forrester" (as much as I dislike that movie - actually mainly the fact that F. Murray Abrahms was a clown in it), and Mos Def's brief part in "Monster's Ball" was well done (but would you really put Mos in this crowd, I mean, there isn't that much of a modern comtempary audience that really listens to him) and there are a few more. Actually, I want to see Snoop Dog in more films, serious ones that is. No dead pimps, please. Speaking of pop artists acting, I always that it really cool that Marc Anthony was in "Bringing Out the Dead." No one could have read the book or script and said, oh wow, this character will really appeal to my audience. A pretty brave move - most people don't recognize him anyway. Shit. What was the purpose of this? Oh yeah, here's to new Twohy films. This is a guy who could really do something for the sci-fi scene and it doesn't look like this film will be a joke. I still haven't given up hope on mainstream audiences yet.

oh my god, it was TERRIBLE. even Ghosts of Mars was better, and that was terrible. and Vin Diesel? are you shitting me? why do people like this guy? he's ridiculously bad. XXX was flat out DUMB. and he was flat out terrible in it. and now they are going to spend millions on this shit making, of all things, a trilogy? (as if the world needed another one). you know, i think it is possible, with a little thought, to make genre action films that mix intelligence with asskikcing. i mean, look at Aliens or the Terminator. is it that hard to make something of quality? or does everything have to suck now?

The Mystery of Vin Diesel's Fingers

    by nocureforfools

he's thinking to himself, "damn, i'm never gonna be able to wash the smell of Asia Argento's cooch off my fingers. eh, it was worth it, though." and then he goes back to acting terribly. **** i think they should cast Vin in some kind of Extreme Merchant Ivory style costume drama. cause that whole stiff-upperlip custom drama of the past is so not what the world is about now maan. now, everything i extreme. (like i can't even just sit down in a chair anymore, i have to wire fu and backflip into the chair while saying stuff like "how phat is this shiznit, yo?"). in this new Xtreme film, he could signify the coming of the new Balls-Out Extreme Gentleman, as opposed to the Effette Bookish Gentleman of earlier costume dramas. maybe a remake of the Brother's Karamazov, written and directed by Jerry Bruckheimer, retitled the Brother's Kickass. at some point in the film he'll get to bang some impossibly beautiful Victorian whore who isn't toothless and riddled with disease, all of the while sliding down a mountain on a table top to escape Bedouin terrorists who are threatening the British Empire with their evilness.

I'll keep and open mind, as Riddick was kind of a cool character, even though every other part of Pitch Black it seemed was so fucking annoying... but it's not horror, so I'll give it a shot as long as I see no indication of it falling down the same path as PB....

    RE: CASH BAILEY

    by virkku

Why does Joblo get to review movies? Maybe because he is one of the most consistent critics areound and ALWAYS gives good arguments to back up his opinions? The problem is not that he is a bad critic (he is in fact one of the best critics in the internet and has one of the 3 best movies sites on the net), but the fact that you are a bad reader of reviews. Did it ever occur to you that you have to read the WHOLE REVIEW and not just the grade? In order to prove that he is a bad critic you have to take quotes from his actual reviews and point out why his arguments don't make sense (which is hard, since he always tends to make sense). How can you analyze his ability to review by taking only a grade from his reviews? You can't. What you just did was stupid and pointless and it rendered your whole argument to stupid and pointless.

    by tv casualty

Someone emailed me about my language, so I'm trying not to swear anymore. Seriously. I thought that Pitch Black, while a bit derivative, was still an exciting, engaging and funny movie. The crash scene is spectacular, and the monsters were pretty well designed. And while Diesel's acting range ain't much, it's well suited for this type of role. I don't see him playing Hamlet, but, I mean, come on people - he's no WORSE an actor than Schwarzenegger. I'd love to see how this story develops, and even if it doesn't make it through teh first chapter, the director deserves props (yeah, I hate that word too) for attempting something so ambitious. And Skarekroe - good call on the Diesel-as-Shadow bit. That WOULD be interesting. OK, I'm done, see, not a single dirty word.

  • And send her after Riddick, bent on capturing the guy she believes killed her sister! Claudia died too quickly in Pitch Black, and I swear, she'd have chemistry with Diesel if given the chance. Plus she's available now that Farscape's...on indefinite hold.

  • And I'm encouraged by the implication that it's NOT going to be a damned rehash of the PB plot, as Alien 3 and 4 were for the first in that series. Give us something new, even if it's the same protagonist. Riddick was definitely on his way to redemption at the end of PB, and I would love to see how that turns out.

...WHEN IT WAS CALLED ALIENS!!! PITCH BLACK SUCKS!!! The Riddick trilogy sounds like it has promise if they don't bring back Vin Diesel. The props in his movies out act him. I wasn't aware America was pining for a trilogy about Pitch Black. Mabye its just me but I didn't know Pitch Black was that popular as a francise. I agree with the poster who thought The Rock would be a better Riddick than Vin Diesel would.
