AICN ANIME: A Huge Report This Week!!
Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab.
I’m so sorry. I lost last week’s column, and now we’ve got this giganticanormous behemoth for you to make up for it. Dig in!!
Manga Spotlight: Slayers: Super-Explosive Demon Story by Hajime Kanzaka and Skoko Yoshinaka
Released by CPM Manga
Swords and socery comedy has always been a bit of a
geek genre. It tends to combine Dungeons and Dragons
setting, Looney Toons sprinkled with a bit of sexual
humor, with a touch of seriousness that nearly always
builds to a battle with a would-be world destroying
demon overlord. Even though only rates slightly higher
than video game adapation on the respect latter, it’s
more than capable of delivering an entertaining story.
Slayers remains the first name in swords and sorcery
comedy. Other never quite measure up its madness,
sense of adventure, or it's giant spells but the
popularity is mainly due to its lead characters, Lina
Inverse, a diminutive sorceress with a love for
treasure, food, and a fiery temper, and her sidekick
Gourry Gabriev, an ace swordsman that tends to only use
his head for a place to keep his following blonde hair.
"Super-Explosive Demon Story" follows Lina and Gourry's
first meeting, as they try to make some money robbing
bandits, accepting guard jobs, and searching out
treasure. It's a fast moving trip full of quick
emotions, silliness, explosive spells, and moments of
intense action.
Though anime hasn't the original medium for Slayers,
its a series that is tailor made for anime. The
colors, spell effect, and voice work by Megumi
Hayashibara or Lisa Ortiz as Lina make the Slayers
anime a unique experience. After the anime, the manga
can only offer a reflection of the anime's energy. It
is a nice visit with familiar characters, but it isn't
the same.

More Tezuka Manga in English
Anime News
Service has commented that href="http://www.studioproteus.com">Studio Proteus,

their FAQ:
Since you've decided to release Astroboy, is there any
chance you're interested in releasing other Tezuka

Toren Smith:
We're looking at other Tezuka works, including Jungle
Taitei, but there are some problems with that
series...the portrayal of the African natives is likely
to upset "certain people." It's silly because the white
hunters are presented in an even more negative manner,

It's likely the next work we do will be Metropolis.

Japanese Manga Publisher Arrested
Comicon reports
Japanese authorities have arrested a prominent manga
publishing president, an artist and one other for
selling comics containing indecent images. The comic,
titled "Mitsushitsu", was aimed at adults and labeled
'adults only'. The incident is reportedly the first
such arrest within the huge mainstream comics market in
Japan.
MAINICHI SHIMBUN is reporting: "Motonori Kishi, 53, the
president of the Shobunkan publishing company, was
arrested by Metropolitan police on suspicion of selling
obscene material, along with 34-year-old comic artist
Yuji Suwa, and one other person whose name was not
released. It is reportedly the first time that people
have been arrested in connection with comics aimed at
the general market."
MAINICHI SHIMBUN said: "Police said the trio sold
20,491 copies of the comic book "Mitsushitsu" to 16
book distributors and other firms between April 13 and
15 for a total of about 11.75 million yen. Matsubunkan
officials expressed disappointment at the arrests. "
'Mitsushitsu' was aimed at adults, and we put labels on
the comics so that the bookstores and the readers could
distinguish that they were aimed at adults. Comics from
other companies whose sections haven't been revised are
sold, and we can't understand the arrests," officials
said."

Jesus Christ, talk about double standard! There are literally gazillions of porn manga books on the market called hentai doujinshi - parodies of video game characters and anime TV/movie characters (Street Fighter, SNK, Megaman, Biohazard [Resident Evil], Pokemon, Digimon, Card Captor Sakura, Neon Genesis E., Final Fantasy, etc etc). Check out eBay under "hentai doujinshi" and see what I mean. Find Final Phantasy on the Net if you can - Hentai Dome at Adult Bouncer have dozens of hentai doujinshi scans and Final Phantasy is one of the most obscene hentai dojin with minimal censorship. Japanese censorship law - blurring, pixeling, white-out and black block - is mandatory as put forth by U.S. authorities after WWII surrender, yet it's easy to get around the law - thrown in as many perversions as possible with minimal censorship without getting in trouble, like squirting semen/vagina and bukkake. Extreme examples of hentai doujinshi is obscene at the highest level and yet I was not certainly offended, except the artists' fetish fantasies tend to go too far with bloody S&M, rape and pedophilia (kiddie porn in Japan is still legal as long as it's censored -- and don't involve real living breathing humans, only drawn manga style like Anal Angels and Biohazard 2: Tofu). Japanese manga artists are some of the best because they work hard, focusing on the details in almost-perfect methods of pencilling, inking, screentoning and colorizing. Hentai doujinshi is the testimony to the power of erotic comic books as the medium - beautifully drawn and inked, yet reprehensibly perverted. Japanese authorities who arrested the persons on obscenity charge have their heads up their asses, as this is strictly an isolated case. Don't expect hentai doujinshi/manga production and distribution to cease any time soon because it's always popular in demand for salivating young men and lonely salarymen.

Good thing there was no column last week... I had nothing to tal
by kiyone
Not that much to say this week either, other than that I saw SPIRITED AWAY on Friday, and it is the least disappointing heavily-hyped anime I have ever seen... One thing I really liked was that it was actually "fun"; too many of the critically acclaimed that get theatrical releases are so serious that I choke on the gravitas. It's not the "be-all-and-end-all" of anime, but I don't think there is any such thing, and it makes #4 on my list of MY all time favourite Ghibli films: #1) KIKI'S DELIVERY SERVICE, #2) WHISPER OF THE HEART, #3) MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO, #4) SPIRITED AWAY, #5) either LAPUTA or PORCO ROSSO (to tell the truth, before Friday, I only had a top 3 Ghibli films list, but I didn't like SPIRITED AWAY quite as much as the ones in the top 3, and a Top 4 list doesn't sound right, and, also, yes, I have seen GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES, and, no, it's not on my list; deal with it). I liked it about the same as LILO & STITCH (Waaa! No commentary track for the LILO & STITCH DVD and there won't be a double-disk set like for ATLANTIS or THE EMPEROR'S NEW GROOVE), which was also a wonderful film, but in a different way.

Surely committing kiddie porn act is different from Hentai
by theburgerking
Acting on something and simply watching porn is something altogether different. The manga artist clearly had the balls (LOL) to do what he did. It's not a double standard. You don't see millions of such incidents happening DAILY when there is such a huge industry for porn in this world.

Go see it!! Support this movie and get it into more theaters!!!BTW, Not counting pokemon, does anyone know which anime made the most money in us theaters? Im pretty sure its either akira or spirited away.

Anime Box Office eturns in U.S./Canadian theatres (excluding POK
by kiyone
(All according to the "Box Office and Business" page for each listing at imdb.com... sites like Boxofficeguru.com or Boxofficemojo.com ignore a lot of the anime releases not from major studios.) AKIRA: $439,162; JIN-ROH $94,591 (N.B. incomplete data... it wasn't tracked past the 9th of September, 2001 and I saw it at my local art-house cinema in January 2002); ESCAFLOWNE (unknown); METROPOLIS $673,414; PRINCESS MONONOKE $2.298m... The big money when it comes to anime is on DVD/VHS, not in the theatres I'm afraid.

Umm, regarding what somebody said about how the Pokemon stories the same stuff over and over again ? Yes, but so are the Godzilla and Jason movies along with the Scooby Doo and Dragonball cartoons. All those things have the same thing happen again and again but fans of those series don't mind since the characters are beloved as well as the whole idea behind it. Plus the plot of Pokemon is different if you've read the Pokemon Adventures manga or the Toshiro Ono manga. The first manga features Ash, Gary, and a new girl fighting Team Rocket, plus the Elite 4. As for the Ono manga, some of the mature content of the manga had to be edited for American release. As for Spirited Away, I wish I see it at a movie theater but it's nowhere close to me to see it. Shame, since I've found Kiki, Totoro, and Monokoe all excellent work by Miyazaki and would have enjoyed the experience. Guess I'll have to see it on video and DVD. As for Yu-Gi-Oh, it's not bad and I'd prefer to see it un-edited. It's originally said to be more adult instead of the kiddie version 4KIDS does. Well, thanks AICN for another good anime report. I hope next time that there's news about the new Bubblegum Crisis series, Tokyo 2041. I loved the Tokyo 2040 series and I'm jumpin' crazy for more info on the new show!

Straight "Pardon me" sounds like I'm being rude (and no one's ever rude on Talkbacks).

I've had this arguement a NUMBER of times with a NUMBER of people. It seems that people seem to focus on the negative aspects of this form of expression and entertainment.
I'm most DEFINATELY an OTAKU. And I'm probably the only otaku that's PROUD to say it. Laugh all you want. Make all the jokes about me being the lonley, bored, perverted man-boy who lives in the attic.
Then realize that one out of every 10 people in this country are JUST LIKE ME. In one form or another, they're anime fans.
Not to mention we are involved with SEVERAL other generes out there, especially involving sci-fi, fantasy, horror, and gaming. We also are the more sociable type of fan. I know there are a few of us who are perverted sacks of manure which deserve to have their genitalia cut off with a rusty box-cutter. I'm DEFINATELY not one of them.
The type of porn that floats over here to the states on a regular basis disturbs and sickens me. Then when US fans get labeled "perverts" by the general public... That really gets me mad.
Look at all the calssic titles out there. Look at all the popular titles on television today. Look around at all the legitimate manga. Then tell me, is this genere porn?
If you say yes, you deserve a knuckle sandwich. Maybe that'll jar your brain cells out of dormancy.
Wake up and smell the coffee folks. Reality is passing you by, and there ain't another bus you can catch to get there.
There's my rant for the day.
Oh, I forgot the password to my usual user name. I'm normally ZoneZero.
Don't let the name fool you, I'm still the Troll Slayer. -
You guys won't be seeing Sailor MPLS anytime soon, for I am forever, Zone Zero.
Now, just a little something to keep things on topic:
I'm still hating the fact that Anime doesn't get respect here in the US as a LEGITIMATE art form. Miyazaki's (sp?) style and form are bar none, yet Di$ney, who's both jealous and greedy, still sit on some of his work. Keeping companies who WANT to make the material box-office boffo away from it. Di$ney just puts it out on a limited "test release" in certain select theatres, then dosen't put ads out there to let people know it's out. THEN they say due to a lack of interest, we're putting it straight to video.
@$$holes. To quote OneBadUncleF**ka: "F**k them, F**k them up the A**!"
