A bit more on a forthcoming overseas television project mentioned on Coaxial last week. “Space Island One.” Mentioned it and offered an image of the title design and Space Station from the series, and got a lot of feedback from people interested in learning more about SIO. So - here’s more.
“Space Island One” tells the story of Space Station Unity and the men and women who make it run - and have dedicated their lives to advancing science and exploration in the name of mankind.
Quoting directly from the series’ promotional folder:
Our characters are pioneers - but instead of a covered wagon, they occupy a fifty billion dollar orbiting habitat which can sustain itself indefinitely.
By placing our characters in this unique environment, we amplify many familiar themes of life on Earth. Loneliness, humor, affection, boredom, rivalry - all travel with them. These elements, combined with their working lives and the extraordinary events they encounter, place “Space Island One” in an exclusive dimension.
CHARACTERS INCLUDE (also from promotional material - randomly quoted *and* paraphrased):
KATHRYN McTIERNAN (Judy Loe). Commander. Married. One 16 year old son.
McTiernan is a humanitarian and idealist who believes space and its colonization will be
the next step for mankind.
WALTER B. SHANNON (Angus MacInnes). Second In Command. 54. Single. Old
school NASA “flier”. Highly experienced and occasionally clashes with junior members of
the crew. Thinks of space and its exploration and colonization as something of a
commercial endeavor. Angus MacInnes is, by the way, GOLD LEADER in the first “Star
Wars” film. “The exhaust port is marked and locked in...”. That guy, I think.
HARRY (HENRIETTA) ESCHENBACH (Julia Bremermann). Biochemist and Research
Specialist. 30. Single with complications. Sardonic, self-contained. Will be the first
woman to give birth to a child “off world”.
PAULA HERNANDEZ (Indra Ove). There’s an accent over the “e” in Ove. Can’t make
my computer do that. Not sure what I’m doing wrong. A gentleman sent me an accented
“e” to copy and paste a while back, but I can’t find the damn thing. Anyway - Bio-Chemist.
Single. On the surface, sultry sexy street urchin. In fact, paula is a highly
competent bio-chemist who beat 4000 people for the job she now has. Really wants
Dusan.
KAVEH HOMAYUNI (Kourosh Asad). Medical Officer. 34. Single. Has an
“unsettling” ability to know what he hasn’t been told. As such, he is the keeper of many
people’s secrets. Combination confidant, surrogate parent, and physician.
LYLE CAMBELL (no - it’s not the guy from “The Carol Burnett Show”. That was Lyle
Waggoner). Lyle is played by William Oliver.
Chief Science Officer. 30. Single. Oddball, long-term resident of Unity. Rarely leaves,
finding the environment too absorbing. Introspective, brilliant, committed - and given to
flashes of "inspired lunacy".
His friends are:
ROAM 1 & 2. On-board robots. Help keep things running smoothly. Respected by most
- but not all- of the crew.
