An Asia-AICN Bulletin concerning BATTLE ROYALE 2

Published at:  Sep 25, 2002 6:21:19 PM CDT

Father Geek here with a report I just as soon NOT post, but have to anyway...

BUNTA here with some very sad, yet still inspiring news, in the world of
Japanese film. Nipponese news services are announcing today that during
yesterday's press conference for BATTLE ROYALE 2 in Tokyo, Kinji Fukasaku
(director of films as awesome and diverse as BATTLE ROYALE, FIGHT WITHOUT
HONOR AND HUMANITY, and BLACK LIZARD) announced that he is ill with cancer.

The 72 year old director was originally diagnosed and treated for prostate
cancer in 1996 and quickly recovered. Now it has returned and has spread to
his bones and spinal column. Facing a regime of radiation treatments, the
doctors have advised him not to work on another film.

But Kinji says he is
going to do BR2 any ways, saying words to the effect that he'd like to use
up the rest of his remaining time making movies.

Kinji, as always,
remains a fighter. Wish him and his family the best.

Principal photography
on BATTLE ROYALE 2 will begin in December and the film is slated for
release in summer 2003.

Gambatte Fukasaku sama!

    Where to order Battle Royal...

    by wankeroo

You can order it from www.pokerindustries.com (MC Comics). That's where I ordered it from. I didn't think that the dub was that bad(meaning the language).

Let's hope you rarely have the opportunity to use it, eh?

That line is awful.... yet awfully funny

    by kitanoisgod

While I'm not one to mock death (unless it happens to be the death of a Disney film.... or Michael Bay in a catamaran accident) the Jor-El crack had me in stitches after reading that horrid Superman script review. Nice one!!

OK, the month of September officially sucks ass.

    by noriko takaya

Last year this time? 9-11. This year this time? The commercialization of 9-11. Then a week or two ago I find out Warren Zevon has terminal lung cancer. Then that--that--abomiation of desolation called a Superman movie script shows up here at AICN. And now this shit. Kinji Fukasaku-san has the big "C" as well. Shit. The way things are going I'll probably get fired and then run over by a cement truck by Friday. I want it to be October. Now, please. Toppu o Nerae.

    Battle Royale DVD's

    by elgordo

There are a few versions that you can get. A pretty good hong Kong no frills DVD in Region 3. A Region 2 DVD that's also good from Tartan video, they are comming out with a 2-disc set of the film and there is also a Korean 2-disc DVD set, with loads of extras and a DTS track. I'm eyeing that one myself. You can get them at amazon.co.uk and charmes.de
I was fortunate enough to see Battle Royale in the cinema a week ago after seeing it on a crappy VCD and later a DVD. Totaly different experince.
I also recently bought Fukasaku's epic film Virus that's brilliant.

    Oh well.

    by guttersniper

I pity the man on his cancer. However. I don't feel any sorrow like this just because he is the director of some bad Asian flick. If I was to feel this kind of sorrow, life would crush me instantly.

Battle Royale was crap. Let's face it.

    FUKUSAKU-SAMA, FAITO!

    by the gline

I say it's his choice to decide how he wants to spend the rest of his life. If he wants to go down fighting, he deserves it. More power to him.

    cancer...

    by kraken

I hate the stuff... it seems like this last year I've been surrounded by it, my dad, my mother-in-law and my wife's 12 year old cousin just died of it. My heart goes out to this man and his family, but good for him fighting this bastard of an illness all the way to the ending doing what he was put here on earth to live for in the first place.

  • I can deal with subtitles...I like crouching tiger hidden dragon, but given the choice I'd take mediocre dubbing over good subtitles any day. I grew up watching dubbed Godzilla movies. I can take it. Will this movie ever make it into normal distribution, like at blockbuster or hollywood video??

They should leave it be just one film!

    by kampbell-kid

I liked Battle Royale the way it is, one movie... no sequel. What else can you really add to the overall story without just giving us more of the same. If the sequel is just a new batch of kids going through all the same trials & tribulations, then I won't care to watch it. That would mean they are clearly making the film to glorify violence in a morbid way with children with no real message.

    Great Films

    by tokyo joe

Battle Royale aside, Fukasaku has directed some excellent stuff. I watched Jingi no Hakaba last night (Graveyard of Honour???) what a fantastic film! Miike Takashi's remake is nice, but the original is really brutal, excellently filmed and edited and just plain psychotic! I've got Yakuza no Hakaba tonight, an earlier effort but I've heard good things. To write off Fukasaku's career on the grounds of Battle Royale (and the bound to be not-so-great Battle Royale 2) is just silly.

    A sequel?!!

    by laguna_loire

Battle Royale is an amazing piece of work, in the UK we've just had the 2-disc special edition with a new cut of the film released - oh, and the versions we've had released here don't have dubbing, just subtitles. I hope the treatment goes well, but if its gonna impair his health that bad to make the film I think he should rest-up first. Just my opinion

If that man's dying wish is to make a kick ass genre film like Battle Royale 2, you gotta take your hat off to him. That's a film-maker i can respect.
