French Frye is hot for BEYOND BORDERS
Father Geek here... this just arrived at the Geek Headquarter's Compound in the Central Texas Hill Country...
French Frye's
Beyond Borders review:
I saw this film on a whim and was pleasantly surprised. I was moved to tears
at some points and was impressed by the beautiful scenery and realistic
performances.
Angelina Jolie plays Sara (in a "regular Joe" role unlike her many eccentric
characters). But her real life character is not forgotten when her sister
mentions that it is better to be thought of as crazy then to be remembered
for being normal. The story is about Sara becoming emotionally overwhelmed
when she sees a starving little Ethiopian boy at a charity benefit brought
by Clive Owen, who plays Nick (Wow, do I really love this actor). He brings
the little boy to make a point about the smugness of the donators
extravagant party while others are without food and shelter. She is outraged
when the boy dies in the cold after sneaking away from being arrested. So
she decides to make a change in the world and travels to Ethiopia, leaving
behind her English husband and all the wealth a person could want.
Sara is striking in her black hair and pristine white outfits (although if
it was me in the desert they'd be completely trashed in about 5 minutes -
very Hollywood!) Nick's rugged masculinity and reality based confidence
grabs Sara's attention and she follows him to help people in Cambodia and
finally, years later, to Chechnya to rescue him.
"Beyond Borders" is like a fast paced travel adventure, beautifully shot -
and reminded me of glamorous films of the 30's and 40's. Each location was
tinted in its own color, giving the film distinct reds, greens and grey
colors - really breathtaking, and the desolate locales become inviting in
their saturated colors and textures, even in poverty. However, I did not buy
her and her husband's dialogue (too awkward) and sometimes she shows up
places for no reason, including the very start of the film.
The ending is a surprise and is very touching but I won't spoil it so you
can see for yourself. I highly recommend this film.

Not knowing anything about movies or the biz, save for they bring me joy in times of crisis, this review just seems artificial.... I dunno, what do I know?
-
reading that review i was thinking to myself "oh this is a plant" + "this has plant written all over it." then i read some talk backers, they also say plant. Hmmm.
-
Seriously, there can be no reviews here without the plant claim. Now, I am NOT claiming that isn't the case here, but EVERY DAMN SINGLE review here cannot be a plant. I was a "plant" once too for Monster's Inc.
Wow, what do you know? IT really was a great film like I said. -

Probably will suck. And unfortunately, they've never heard of modernization thoery. There is a theory that the reason the third world hasn't modernized is that their culture is unable to change and accept modernization. So really, their problems might all be their fault.

that is a good movie. watch it because i said so......ok that was it...i'll be here all night

...I think this site is way too eager to yell PLANT! But damn...even through the positive review, I'm getting a horrendous feeling about this one. No detail in the descriptions, saying something is "very Hollywood" and trying to put a positive spin on it...like the song says, just because you're paranoid, don't mean they're not after you. And just because the TBers are "PLANT!" happy, don't mean plants don't happen. Add to the mix a nickname I've never heard of, and...do you think Harry et al should start checking WHEN these people register their names, in relation to when they receive the first review from them? 'cause I'm getting the feeling I could've easily held my breath in the time that elapsed between French Frye registering their name and hitting "send" on this...
-
The only thing any of us should be concerned about: has AJ gained a little weight, and maybe lost a tattoo or two, or is she still skanky looking? And does she still love it up the ass?
-
Of course this reviewer is a plant. It's obvious in the way that this, like all plant reviews, is overwhelmingly positive except for some very minor criticism thrown in near the end to avoid seeming like a plant. Furthermore, I saw BEYOND BORDERS, I've reviewed it here on AICN (seek out my review). My review, like everyone else's so far is overwhelmingly scathing. The audience at the test screening had an overwhelming negative opinion of the film, laughing at innappropriate times, and tearing the film apart afterwards. The people trying to compile the focus group were desperate to try to find EXCELLENT marks on people's sheets... they were not to be found. So it makes sense that the studio would want to put out some manufactured word of mouth on this site where the film has already been ridiculed... it's of no use. The film is awful, it will sink at the box office, and no unethical promotions will keep that from happening.

Did you notice how he didn't really say anything about it? He just kinda threw it out there, as if to a kennel full of... rabid... vegetarian dobermans.
-
No TB is complete without it..
-
..will be creating fake movie reviewers and giving their own movies 5 stars, that would be some crazy shit..
-
Screams plant. Says nothing about the movie in particular, just glowing generalizations. Note the suspicious catchphrases: "I was moved to tears at some points and was impressed by the beautiful scenery and realistic performances" or "Beyond Borders is like a fast paced travel adventure, beautifully shot - and reminded me of glamorous films of the 30's and 40's" or " The ending is a surprise and is very touching but I won't spoil it so you can see for yourself." It's like the plants aren't even trying hard these days.

Pushing Tin, maybe one of the best little bits of acting ever. She's in a restaurant with John Cusack, slightly drunk, and is telling him the story of her life. She has this bit of physical expression when talking about her gardening that's perfection....absolutely inspired and poignant and I urge you all to rent it if you haven't.
-
I mean seriously, where is the formal critique of the film, Don? You don't expect us to believe that you're not pushing "Tin", do you?
Plant. -
Questions must be answered!
-
What's wrong with that? Most of us are studio plants around here. In fact, every snide comment and attempt at wit on every AICN post I've ever made was designed by New Line's Internet Feedback Solutions comittee. I'm actually 5 white guys and a token black woman. sk

I think all these talkbacks calling the review a plant are plants working for other studios

"Ficus Benjamina" AKA Weeping Fig
Can anyone else find a plant that shares their name, go on, it'll be fun. -

All the spies that got captured/exposed/deported/killed were working for the CIA or MI6, All the rest (the success stories) were with the Ivans.
-
To be honest I don't think I can ever see a time when Hollywood will ever make a sympathetic Russian spy movie, it would be like them making a sympathetic Vietcong movie...never gonna happen.
By the way you can be "Hosta" (from the family Hostaceae) AKA "Blade Runner" -
Damn right they were the best, they're a whole different kind of sneaky those Ivans.
-
Modernization theory - 3rd world can't accept - makes 3rd world's problems their own fault - What are you, in your first year at Upstairs Political Science College and Cooking School? Holy shit, you have no clue what you're talking about - Do you even know what Modernization theory is? Or did you just get the term from the back of a cereal box? Here's another easy term for you - Colonialism. Jesus, go back to sleep, you are far more dangerous awake.
-
You can be "Citrullus colocynthis" AKA "The vine of Sodom" (sorry that's the best I can do)
-
This was originally to be an Oliver Stone movie (almost everyone in Hollywood's been attached to it at some point - it's been around that long) but the final director credit goes to Martin "Goldeneye" Campbell. BTW Campbell's fisrt feature was a low-budget British film called "Sex Thief". I bet I'm the only talkbacker to know (or care) about that...
-
I'd have to go with gingko biloba. It helps you remember Sammy Jankis.
-
to read my tattoo.
-
oops.
-
For the love of Zep - I'm surprised he remembered to remove "please post in a highly visible location" before he sent it to AICN.
-
...Nope, I just can't seem to think of a plant that I really like. One that properly reflects me and my lifestyle.... My mind is a complete blank..... Geez, any suggestions?
-
Seriously, all the posts about this PLANT are cracking me up. This is one of the few talkbacks where I've ever laughed out loud. Thanks for brightening my day. Oh, and knowing what HP knows about Angelina, shouldn't that movie have been called "Pushing Turds" instead of "Pushing Tin"??

There is a sympathetic Russian spy movie, called Russkies. And there is a movie sympathetic to the Vietcong, called the Iron Triangle. Don't underestimate the ability of Americans to be anti-American.
-
"'Cyborg 2' is like a fast paced android adventure, beepfully shot - and reminded me of direct-to-video films of the 80's and 90's. Each alleyway location was bathed in its own cardboard boxes, giving the film distinct brown, blue and white colors - really adequate, and the backyard locales become inviting in their slapped together ferocity and textures, even in grade-Z film poverty. However, I did not buy her and Jack Palance's dialogue (too awkward) and sometimes she doesn
-
He`s not so bad, just don`t make him the new Bond!!!!!!! He`s flat footed, has crap posture and walks like a fucking penguin. Keep him away.
-
In "Russkies" the russian is hardly a spy, he's just a navy sailor that gets washed up and befriended by some kids (hilarious cultural faux-pas to follow). "Iron Triangle" is sympathetic to one VC but still quite anti the Vietcong as a whole (remember they both have to escape from his evil commander). I wasn't saying that Americans can't be anti-American, it's just that Hollywood can't be Anti-American, it just doesn't sell movie tickets.
-
You might get good ticket sales elsewhere in the world. C'mon Hollywood let's explore that Middle Eastern market!
-
So basically, if anyone ever has a positive review on the site, its from a plant? I mean, he/she DOES mention the "awkward dialogue"...
yeah, plant. -
How come if a film shows, or alludes to the cause of suffering somewhere on the planet to be linked with what happens in the US - we call it Anti-American? It seems like an effort to discredit the content. When people see films that show similarly negative stuff about other nations (colonialism, tyrannism, etc.) they call them revealing, or introspective. Anti-American? That kind of infers that the content of a film or book is just an opinion - its not based in fact or is simply equaled/nulified by a Pro-American opinion - Do we really think that the US doesn't make any mistakes? That it is simply a matter of opinion? I think my point was that the language influences the thought process, and we should be aware of that.
-
This TB will be gone soon, wanna talk about this some more on the new AJ TB? (othwise it's going to get taken up with HP talkin' about buggery)
