The WB's EVERWOOD 1.1!!

Published at:  Sep 16, 2002 1:23:11 AM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

I keep hearing “Everwood” is like “Gilmore Girls” with testes. But, y’know, “Gilmore Girls” is like one of the two or three best shows in production – so believe it when you see it.

9 p.m. Monday. The WB.

TV Guide says:

Advertisers seem convinced that WB, after years of trying, has at last found a perfect match for its highest-rated show, 7th Heaven. And they may be right, but we can't help feel this series is too cloying and quirky by half. And with a father as smugly self-righteous as Andrew Brown, we understand why young Ephram dreams of escape.

Variety says:

a sound drama that does for father-son relationships what "Gilmore Girls" does for the women of the family. As quirky as it is comfortable … Things are a bit rushed off the bat but for all of its haste, "Everwood" is nicely paced down the stretch and viable as a program for the mall crowd as well as their parents.

The Hollywood Reporter says:

If all of this sounds a tad far-fetched, it is. But the amazing thing is that this turns out to be a really pleasant ride. If there is a single new drama this season with multigenerational appeal, this is it. … There are times when the friction between Dr. Brown and son Ephraim seems overly juiced, as if the teenager is carrying a chip on his shoulder the size of a mature sequoia. More often, though, their verbal sparring has an honest ring and a hopeful sense of inevitable reconciliation.

I am – Hercules!!

Well My Friends, This is About as Gay As It Gets...

    by saucy_jack

And I thought Smallville sucked. Fuck me, they've gone through the bottom of the barrel and into the Earth's core when it comes to the sheer gaeity of TV concepts these days. Oh well, at least I'm not jerking off about being "first". Probably not anyway.

    blah

    by narky

in the commercials it seems like this dad is so great and is just waiting for the son to come around. in real life i doubt its like that. the son would show what a hypocrite the father is. he'd never know what to say to his son and everyone would be miserable forever.

    Re: Enigma & "manly man"

    by jorson2

I think Enigma's just jealous he can't be a manly man - that is, if Enigma is a man or, I should say, a male. Then it stands to reason his (or her) insults are just a by-product of his (or her)need to overcompensate for his (or her) insecurities.

Ya know, Enigma, Hitler did that and it started a war.

    Everwood and the Father/Son relationship

    by electric_monk

So what is wrong with a father having a relationship with his son? Why is gay? Why can only women have a close relationship with their mothers? It boggles the mind that men cannot have a meaningful relationship with out some straight guy out at AICN calling it gay. Men have emotions, for Jeebus sake! A father/son relationship is more than talking football and going down to the local Hooters to snicker at the girls they'll never get. If guys allowed themselves to "feel" an emotional connection with their fathers (and please, leave the silly comments for 8 years olds) many men would not feel as if they have been abandoned by their fathers. But we've been told over many generations, that men should not show a non-physical emotion with other men. It won't make you gay to hug your father, to kiss your dad (no matter what age you are). I know this sounds like a fucking Dr Phil/Oprah episode, but I believe that if men embraced emotions fully, instead of sticking them on a shelf and only taking them out when they are alone, you would connect better with your family and friends. This show looks silly and the WB is pimping the son like no one's buisness, but a son needs his father and a father needs to know his son. Instead of becoming strangers, like so many father and sons do, find out who they are. Just stop attaching a word like "gay" to it. Or maybe the ones that do, the ones who protest some much, have something to hide?

I only clicked on this link cause I didn't get why AICN was even covering such a shitty-looking show. Now I hear it's good. Oy, somebody fire the WB marketing people.

    by warlock411

or Monday night football. The show just did not grab me the way Buffy, Farscape, Gilmore or many others have in the past. This show is supposed to be Gilmore Girls for guys, right ? So why put it on opposite football, that takes away a large part of its target group right off the bat. My first impression is that the father figure is an asshole. I like Amy the young boys love interest, but thats because I liked her in her last show. Maybe the show will get better, but it had better do it fast before more new shows start.

    'Aunt Esther' just passed away

    by notchjohnson

Notch here. We just lost a great TV actress. LaWanda Page, best known as Aunt Esther on 'Sanford and Son'

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) - LaWanda Page, who played the fearsome, Bible-toting aunt Esther Anderson on the 1970s television comedy "Sanford & Son," has died. She was 81.

Page died Saturday at Centinela Hospital Medical Center from complications of diabetes, friend and producer Donald Welch said Monday.

After the aunt Esther role from 1973 to 1977 on "Sanford & Son," Page appeared as aunt Esther in the short-lived spinoff "The Sanford Arms" in 1977. She also starred in "Detective School" in 1979 and "B.A.D. Cats" in 1980

    Crazy meatheads

    by kidadinfinitum

I'm a hetero male and I rather enjoyed the premier of Everwood tonight. I also happen to love Gilmore Girls and Smallville, making up some of my favorite television. Unfortunately, I talk to way too many people that won't give these shows a chance just because it's on the WB. Dividing things between female and male is so outdated and silly, especially concerning a tv show, and even more so one dealing with feelings and relationships. Perhaps even some of you homophobes could learn something if you just tried to broaden your horizons once. I understand everyone has different tastes but the whole manly man vs. effemenate male is so lame and childish.

    Fathers and Sons

    by dyslexicheart

Having just seen the pilot I have to say I was surprised. It was enjoyable and interesting. It's not worth sitting through an episode of the laughable "Seventh Heaven", which I did do tonight with my girlfriend who is the daughter of a preacher but had never seen the show, because she watches a lot HBO and Comedy Central, she's still laughing. I think the father/son relationship in "Smallville" is the most endearing thing about the show, moreso than a budding romance or future nemesis in the making.

Enough with this "Morning In America" earnestness. I prefer pre-9/11 irony. "Ed" I can bear; this, with the cutesy music and the talking to the dead wife goes too far. Try again.

    by dawnshott

I just couldnt believe WB would allow the show to show a 15yr. old boy having a wet dream. And I thought it was sick when he told his dad it was chocolate milk . :0

    "South Park" is more realistic!

    by shadowlord_7

I live in Colorado. Trust me -- Everwood ain't Colorado. This is TV fantasyland Colorado. It looked like John Denver puked all over my television.

For the record, we do get snow (sometimes a lot), but it always melts after a few days. Unless you live on a ski slope, winters are far more mild than most people think.

Also, I don't care what tiny mountain town you live in, you're never completely surrounded by towering peaks. Every external shot featured a 14er (14,000' peak). In fact, if you look close, I think you'll find it's the exact same mountain in every shot. It's like having a show that takes place in New York City and blatently showing the Empire State Building in every shot.

If you've never been to Colorado, I suggest taking a trip. It's a whole 'nother world out here, but not what you expect.
