THE WIRE Finale!!

Published at:  Sep 07, 2002 11:29:02 PM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

“Where’s Wallace?? WHERE’S WALLACE??”

I loved “Homicide: Life on the Street,” but I think I like its R-rated cousin, HBO’s “The Wire,” even more. The first-season finale airs Sunday night at 10 p.m.

When we last saw crack retailer D’Angelo Barksdale, he was seething in stir and pissed at his boss. Is Uncle Avon going down, or is the inner-city kingpin too smart even for the vengeance-driven detective Jimmy McNulty?

TV Guide says:

Sentencing. After devoting 13 episodes to a single investigation, the crime drama about Baltimore cops and drug dealers wraps up its fascinating first season. In the finale, Bunk (Wendell Pierce) and Freamon (Clarke Peters) trace an important call linked to Greggs's shooting. In the meantime, McNulty (Dominic West), always the maverick, takes the case to a higher level; Daniels (Lance Reddick) finds the rat in the detail; and D'Angelo (Larry Gilliard Jr.) rethinks his future after a talk with his mother (Michael Hyatt). Tim Van Patten directed the episode, which was written by series creator David Simon (The Corner) and Ed Burns. Avon: Wood Harris. Rhonda: Deirdre Lovejoy.

I am – Hercules!!

September 15th my friend. Gotta boot Sex in the City, Arliss and the Wire to make room for Tony. I am looking forward to seeing how the Wire will end. Who'll be on top cops or criminals?

    Finally

    by thevisitor

During the summer Herc admitted he wasn't watching The Wire and was looking at that second rate Street Time on Showtime instead. Also there was much more talk going on about the Dead Zone which has unfortunately taken a nose dive in quality as its season has progressed IMO. So I'm happy to see Herc has come around and is enjoying the BEST tv show this summer and one of the best on TV period: The Wire. Maybe it's because Herc has a character namesake on the show. :)

There are only two series that I taped every episode of the last 12 months: 24 and the Wire. Great TV.

HBO was good enough to string together the first five hours of "The Wire" one Saturday night, and I was hooked. "Street Time" went unwatched. **** **** **** **** **** **** ***** "Dead Zone" hasn't done anything yet as good as its first two episodes, but I'm sticking with it to see what they do with Greg Stillson.

The Wire & The Sopranos and other related rants...

    by mariof

...are both amazing, highly-entertaining shows (thank God for HBO!). While I admit that I do like "The Sopranos" a little bit more, "The Wire" has some of the best writing and most refreshing chacters that I've seen on television in a very long time. Heck, "The Wire" and "The Shield" remain the only reason for me to watch television police drama. (By the way: informal poll for any talk-backer who might like to participate: Who is the coolest character on "The Wire"? ... for my money... it's gotta be "Stringer" Avon's very dangerous, very intelligent and very cool second in command.) "The Wire" is, IMHO, one-third of the greatest cop/criminal/drug-issue related project/dramatizations ever produced... along with HBO's great mini-series "The Corner" and "Traffik" the amazing six part British mini-series, which Steven Soderbergh screwed up with his vastly inferior and totally unnecessary remake (sorry, but just because most people don't bother to, or know enough to, even attempt to search outside the Hollywood machine, that does not mean that Hollywood or even semi-Hollywood directors should remake everything under the sun) by A.) literally stealing word for word, and scene for scene, everything that most uninformed American critics praised as being so very original... and B.) Americanizing it! I'm an American and I certainly have much love and respect for, and pride in, my country, but one of the major reasons why "Traffik" is so original and fantastic, other than the acting, writing and startling depth of characterization, is that instead of concentrating on America and Mexico or Colombia or such, it actually took us to places where these stories usually don't take place. The settings were wonderfully unique, and so, of course, they immediately threw that concept out the window as soon as they began the remake. I wonder if it's because they felt that American audiences wouldn't have any interest in a mainly dramatic, character driven project taking place outside of United States. It wouldn't surprise me, because Hollywood generally attempts to insult the movie-going public's intelligence on a semi-regular basis. I also wanted to mention that while I was at the Lorraine Bracco Sopranos Third Season DVD signing I spoke with a representative from HBO who claimed that "The Corner" will be available on DVD sometime before the end of the year. (They're also currently at work on releasing "Oz" season two, "Six Feet Under" seasons one and two, and "Arliss" season one).

This season finale has to be one of the most satisfying for any show in recent memory, everything you'd want to know is wrapped up one way or another, and the end-with Omar- had me cheering out loud.

    The final episode...

    by mariof

This was a great show, from the first episode to the last. I also found myself cheering out loud at Omar's return... and it looks like Stringer's the man now! I can't wait for the DVD set. I only hope that they're already figuring out how to bring this show back (even if they have to work with those annoying fed pricks!) By the way, it was extremely cool that they showed both the police officers AND the criminals learning from their experiences (each of them growing wiser).

    Stringer was ALWAYS the man.

    by funketeer

Most people don't seem to get that. Stringer pretty much called all the shots and ran the business his way and still gets to stay out of jail. I can't decide whether or not he was using Avon or if he really cared about him but either way, Stringer was the man while Avon was merely a figurehead of power.

Hey can the Sopranos get a little more overrated?

    by sphere

Because I can't get enough of the fanatical hype machine that that show produces. Sweet lord, I like the show as much as anyone, but it's not the best show ever. Both The Wire, and before that, Oz (the few two seasons; not the horrible later seasons) were better shows, in my opinion. The actors on those shows were really putting their talent to good use, not just going through the motions like the Sopranos cast sometimes do.******I don't see how Thw Wire can come back for another season. Not with the same characters anyway. The finale pretty much took half the cast out of the picture, at least as far as the Barksdale case. That was a damn fine finale though. Most of the "good guys" (including D'Angelo, if you consider him so) got screwed over pretty good, and didn't change a damn thing in the end. Sad, but fittingly realistic.

    Funketeer: A Response

    by mariof

Actually I half agree with you. I don't believe that Avon was merely a figure-head; rather, I saw his character as a brilliant planner who was smart enough to make sure that his second in command was equally as smart. (So many other films and television programs have presented smart cops vs. stupid crooks... or smart crooks vs. idiot cops, or smart crooks who were surrounded by advisors who were uneducated morons. What made "The Wire" so compelling is that the main criminal characters and the main police officer characters were both equally dedicated, resourceful, smart and determined.) I loved the fact that Avon was smart enough to listen to his second-in-command and heed his advice (regarding Omar), even if he didn't agree at the time. But hey, like I said earlier, I do half-way agree with you... Stringer is the man! I'm not sure if they'll be able to put together a second season (but I hope they can!) I loved this series final episode (and I, for one, was extremely happy that Herc and his partner got away with their little money-snatch, from the stash house raid, because I thought they were screwed when the Lieutenant called him into his office!) In fact my only complaint about this series (and this last episode) is that they should have used another quote to kick off the episode... my vote would have gone to "That's why we're not gonna win... If they fuck up they get beat... If we fuck up they give us a pension".

Damn this series was awesome. I wasn't going to watch it at all. Unfort. I can't find anyone else near me who's watched it from start to finish. Loved it when "McNutty's" boss asked him: where don't you want to go? And the ending was great - nothing changes, everyone got a bump up, it's all for nothing. Bravo!

Omar IS BACK! And Here's Why...

    by mariof

As to the point of whether Omar is jacking dealers in New York or Baltimore... it doesn't really matter. Either way he's back to his cowboy ways and over-the-top antics (And if he's back to his old ways... can a return home really be far off? People are, after all, extremely territorial... I mean hey, speaking for myself, I'm a New Yorker til the day I die. I might spend some time away, but in the end this is where I come from and part of who I am.) I truly hope that they manage to produce a second (and even third) season of this show because like I said in an earlier post, "The Wire" and "The Shield" remain the only two excellent crime dramas on television. "CSI", "Law & Order", and "NYPD Blue" are okay, but IMHO they don't even come close to "The Wire" and "The Shield".

    by reive

Hakima rules and Stringer is wicked smart, but Omar is by far the coolest. He's a freakin' cockroach, nothing can do him in.

I'm relieved to find other folks love this show as much as I do, I've been irritating my friends by talking it up in a vain attempt to find someone I can con into watching it so I have someone to talk to about it. *heavy sigh* I'm surrounded by heathens.

    by tom violence

I think Freeman convinced McNulty very early on in their initial bar conversation that McNulty should choose to go someplace where he wouldn't be tucked away in some windowless office like Freeman was in the pawn shop unit. So, off-camera, I imagine it did go a lot like the previous posters utterance, "Well, I hate boats."

in the first episode mcnulty said he didnt want to go to the harbor patrol, the diesel fumes made him nausious.
My guess is next season will kick off with either avon getting out on early parole, or a brand new case maybe with the hoods being in the periphery with their big comeback in season 3

    I read this today..on www.sfgate.com

    ****************************************************
The series will end after 13 episodes, without a cliffhanger. If it's successful enough to continue, Simon will face the same "what next?" quandary that the makers of Fox's "24" encountered earlier this year -- how to revive a series that has a distinct beginning, middle and end without insulting the viewer.

Simon and Burns said they won't repeat the same formula. "The Wire" will probably continue with some but not all of the main characters, investigating a different kind of crime or a different set of criminals.

But as in real life, the bureaucratic problems on the police force aren't going to go away.

"I want people to spend more time worrying about what's going to happen to people than I do whether the cops are going to get the bad guy," Simon said. "I've got no interest in good versus evil anymore."
    ****************************************************

I loved this show from beginning to that spectacular end with Omar grinnin' and laughin' just to show he's back in the game. Like alot of the others, I'd love to see this storyline continue in season 2. There still lots of things they can cover like Kima..will she quit the force for her lover? And will she find out about Bubbles hittin that rock again? What about Daniels? Herc? Will McNulty work his way back up the ranks and still fight for partial custody of his kids or continue to be a booze hound on boat patrol? How well will Stringer handle Avon's biz while he's gone (after all Stringer was taking business classes at that community college McNulty followed him to)? How well will Avon handle prison since he's never been caught or profiled before this case happened. And What about Omar up in NY? Why exactly did he pick NY to go to? And what was D'Angelo doing up in NY/NJ for Avon for? I dont know if anyone else caught this in the finale..but when mcnulty daniels and the other were talkin to the feds about terrorists the feds said something about unless they are gettint he drugs from somewhere else like the columbians or cubans.....well theres lots of Cubans up in NY area. SO why was D up in NJ/NY if all of Avons biz is in Baltimore....HMMMMMMMM....see? theres so much more they could capitalize on before they go to a new cast and story. I'm not lookin for some happy sappy Disney ending here cause this is after all a drama and not everything in life ends on a happy note. But I would like to see some things fleshed out a lil bit more. But I'd love to have this series come out on dvd with commentary from the cast, bios, maybe a lil behind the scenes if they studied under real cops and dealers to get more of a feel for their roles, etc etc.

    Best show on TV

    by azjim

Hyperbole? Maybe. But this show was about real people and things that really happen in this world in a way that few television programs have ever been. According to an online chat Simon did with the Wash Post, the show will be back for another season. I'm sure he won't let us down. He said it would be some of the same cops, and different criminals. Omar goes where he wants. The first season will be out on DVD, as will The Corner, as has been mentioned.

The deal with Avon and Stringer is, String is the queen, the most powerful piece on the board. But in the end, he serves the king. Omar is somewhere off the board. He doesn't follow anybody's rules. What a great character. Welcome to NYC.
