REMAKE THIS!! A Brief DAWN OF THE DEAD Script Reaction!!

Published at:  Aug 29, 2002 8:59:38 AM CDT

Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab.

I can’t conceive of a world in which the remake of DAWN OF THE DEAD is a good thing, but here’s someone who says that’s exactly the case:

Hi Harry

Really Enjoying the on set reports from Kill Bill. Good work!!

I'm just writing to let you know that I have read the script for the "Dawn
of the Dead" remake and seeing as how the original is in my top ten film
list, I must say that I wasn't disappointed by this script. Now I know that
there is a lot of hostility aimed towards this remake (there's even an
online petition to stop the making of it - but thats just silly). Lets be
honest, there's not enough Zombie movies in the world. I can't get enough
of them. Even Resident Evil had some merits - Milla being one of them.

It wasn't until after I'd read the script for "Dawn of the Dead" that I
discovered that James Gunn - Scooby Doo's writer, wrote the story, although
it did take the wind out of my excited sails somewhat, I still think he did
a good job. If all goes well, there should be some cool action, tension,
scares (although it takes a lot to scare me nowadays in film. I think the
original "Ring" was movie was the closest I've come in a long while. before
that it was "Blair Witch") and lots of bloodletting. I truly believe James
Gunn has a love for Zombie movies and the Horror Genre, but then it also
seems he had a love for Scooby Doo, and look what happened there. Lets at
least be open-minded about this remake.

Now you'll have to excuse me because I wanna see if I can fulfill a lifelong
ambition and be a Zombie extra.

Is Kill Bill gonna be one of the greatest movies of all time or have I just
been listening to Harry too much?

From beyond the grave.....................

Stinky Stank

I don’t know, man. You’d have to go a long way to convince me this is any sort of good idea. Still, this guy seems to have been impressed enough to change his mind. Anything can happen...

"Moriarty" out.

Come on, Moriarty, that was a useless post. As a Romero zealot (400+ viewings of DAWN and counting, plus I've been thrown out of Monroeville Mall four times in the past 15 years for taking pictures in various spots -- who knew about the architectural copyright laws???) I am WHOLLY opposed to the idea of a remake, but it's true -- we need more zombie movies. Here's hoping this one's worth a damn. NOW SPILL SOME NEWS ABOUT IT!! ;)

His scripts are so toxic I wouldn't use them for toilet paper if I had the runs! This hack pollutes movie theaters with his CRAP and all the fat, bon-bon eating SOCCER MOMS dump their kids off at the multiplex and BOOM the film's a hit. It's a total disgrace that a charlatan like that is allowed any sort of clout in Hollywood. The only thing he should be writing is checks to pay back all the kids who squandered their money on "Scooby CRAP"

    Hi, Love the site!
I just got an copy of the latest Star Wars film.
George Lucas loves Star Wars, but then again he loved Howard the Duck.
This script wasn't half bad. It'll have action scenes and lots of special effects.
I don't think there is enough Space films out there.

    by johnnyscience

James Gunn does a lot of work for Troma. Although yeah a remake is completely unneeded, it might not be terrible. Scooby Doo was a sell out yeah. And it was terrible sure. But look at what Owen Wilson does. He does rubbish like the Haunting and Behind Enemy Lines. But that's only so he has money to help produce films with Wes Anderson. For every evil, there's a hidden good dead. And Tromeo and Juiet rocked, which James Gunn wrote and has an uncredited direction attached to the title, so give up the negativity on the project and go into it nuetral. You might find things you like.

    by monsterzeroone

Useless post is right. If James Gunn "loves" Scooby Doo I'd hate to see what he'd do with a property he hated. Sitting through those shitty old Scooby Doo "movies" that guest-starred Sonny & Cher and Jerry Reed are a blowjob by Aphrodite in the nicest honeymoon suite in Nirvana compared to the writhing, fetid sewege pit of hell the feature film was. Trying to emjoy that film was like trying to French-kiss a rabid wolverine with ass worms. The original "Dawn of the Dead" was a brilliant satire of late-70s consumer culture and "Me"-generation nihilism. Even if it weren't a bit outdated, this is a concept Gunn couldn't grasp if he used a concept-grasping machine on Concept-Grasping Day. Fuck James Gunn. Fuck him in his stupid ass.

If you dare tell me any more recent horror outing is superior, I will be forced to weep uncontrollably that the thought that this generation, YOUR generation, will take care of me when I'm old (and no, Vern, I'm not counting on it!). then why doesn't he write his own zombie movie. Like Spider-ham says - its a zombie movie, there's not a lot of intense research to be done (although Spider-ham, Dawn of the Dead has a lot of subtleties to it that deserve some respect). So far this guy has taken the ideas and creations of other people and turned them to his own profit. To quote Mosier from Chasing Amy - "Your not an artist - You're a tracer."

I am Frank the Robot. I have been sent from the Atomic Age to seek out all perveyours of sub-intelligent films and smote them with lasers from my horn-rimmed glasses. In the Atomic Age, the world is ruled by people who enjoy bathroom humor, pratfalls and cliched pop-culture references that are five years out of date. We have traced the source of this evil to James Gunn. His infantile films and juvenile books polluted the minds of the young and robbed them of their ambition. Now, all our movies and television shows reek of his influence. Last year's best picture at the Oscars was "Hey! Who Cut the Cheese?" starring Freddie Prinze III, who also took home best actor (his fourth win in a row). Please, I beseech you, lead me to James Gunn so that I might save us all!

    I Actually Liked Resident Evil...

    by nocureforfools

i thought it was pretty cool. it had cool design, good music, a tense, cold atmospere, beautiful girls and some decent action/murder scenes. my only complaint was that it wasn't gorey enough, of course. but, i also found myslef eaglery awaiting a sequal at the end, so, for a dumb-but-fun movie, it worked. i thought it kept pretty true to the RE games, which are my favorite games of all time. and i actaully thought the flat-out rip-offs from Dawn of the Dead were amusing, not sacriligious. +++++++ now, a Dawn remake? hmm. it'll probably be good and bad. i hope they keep the gore level, or even better, push the gore level even higher. the original is also one of my favorite horror movies, and there is a late 70s quality to the horror that just can't be beat. i first saw this movie when i was like maybe 10, 12 years old and it completely freaked me out and rocked my world. for weeks, even months afterward, i fantasized about what i would do in the inevitable zombie apocalypse. i don't think this remake will recreate that feeling, but then again, i'm 30 now, so what possible could? here's to hoping it does turn out good...

    Good Action Movie?

    by f timmie

Excuse me but Zombie movies should be Horror movies, not action movies. This is exactly where RE went wrong. I just saw RE for the first time a week ago and I was with the movie for a while. The part where the people got sliced up by the lasers was pretty cool. Then the zombies attack and right away I see where the movie goes wrong. They tried to make it play like an action movie with a pounding heavy metal soundtrack. Try this, watch RE and when the zombies attack turn the volume off and play some eerie Tangerine Dream type music. The movie is actually pretty cool this way.

    by iopf

The remake of NOTLD was better than the original. It had better pacing, better acting, and better picture and sound (obvously). Who cares who is writing it. I mean scooby doo did have one of the dumbest plots of all time but are you all really sure this Gunn guy is soley responisble...The first draft couldve been good but the higher ups may have made him dumb it down ALOT to be slightly more kid friendly. Also the script isnt everything. There are a lot more facets of production that go into a movie.

Just look at the writer of A Beautiful Mind. He is the same writer of Batman and Robin.

I say bring on the remake. You can never have too much of a good thing especially when in this case too much is only 2. I loved Dawn of the Dead but I did find it to be a little slow and I really didnt like the actor that played "flyboy". I felt he was a little too whiny.

On a final note just think what a zombie movie will be like with the technologies of today (forget RE. Wes Anderson BLOWS). Hopefully it will get a decent budget and Danny Trejo will play one of the bikers.

    by johnnyscience

Hollywood is Hollywood. What else are you really expecting from the biggest money machine on a scale that would put Stephen Hawkings recent discoveries to shame. They're running out of ideas. Who cares if they're remaking Dawn of the Dead. The original was fantastic and always will be. Nothing will change that. This movie shares nothing but a name, and will not alter what-so-ever change through the magic of Jumanji or some shit, the OG. So get over it. Theres nothing you can do and it's in hands that might make a decent movie or quite possibly a pile of rubbish. If you wanna complaing about a remake, how about Texas Chainsaw Massacre? How about Micheal Douchbag Bay having anything to do with that what-so-ever. How about Toby Hooper sucking asshole to the point of putting a really good asshole sucker to shame. I lost everything I was trying to say.

    by roguewriter

... and found myself pleasantly swept away for more of its 90-odd minutes than I expected to be. No, it's not a very good film, but the pulsing semi-Manson score helps a lot, the film was great to look at, and the casting was surprisingly convincing. If there was a major (MAJOR) downfall it was what the poster above noted -- it was an action movie, not a horror movie (per se). I mean, for God's sake, as cool as the slice-n-dice lasers were, did we really need to waste half the characters with a technological kill -- it was a ZOMBIE MOVIE!! Let the zombies rip into 'em! Was really hoping there would be a shocking, NC-17 version of this arriving on DVD, but I see it's just the same flick. Too bad. This one had elements that clicked like crazy -- it just needed that Romero panache -- and a whole lot more red stuff.

    by timothycarey

...the dead will walk the screen...AGAIN! not that i would think that a subtle concept like irony would stand in the way of a version of _dotd_ that has what fans here clearly want -- better sound and picture! as long as it looks and sounds cool, what matter the content? put dogs on tricycles and eat them! what possible difference would it make? surface: ever! subtext: never! -- but has it (wow, i truly apologize about this one) dawned (told ya) on anyone that this needless remake and the tendencies in hollywood that gave rise to this remake are PRECISELY THE THINGS _DAWN OF THE DEAD_ IS CRITICIZING?!?!? i.e. rampant consumerism spilling over into the self-consuming, cannibal apocalypse of late capitalism? why am i sure mr. james gunn's script has more uses of the term "dude" than any reflection of these themes? oh well, as long as the film being soylent green-ed isn't _citizen kane_, i guess we have no right to criticize...if this desecration spurred george andrew to make another work of genius with _dead reckoning beyond thunderdome_, it would be one thing, and a fine thing. but, between his own dicey attempts at financing this new contribution to the literature (made any easier with the eventual release of _gunn of the dead_? i think it could go either way) and the strong likelihood a _beyond thunderdome_ theme for the dead series will suck with astonishing ferocity, it seems to be an unlikely thing. and, yo, i must know -- what do people know about dario argento's contrbutions (or lack thereof) to the original _dawn_ script? i suspect if he did contrbute, it was very limited manner. i hope that's the case -- there, but for his cinematography and art direction, goes the italian ed wood, jr.

"Dawn of the Dead" Remake? I Dunno...

    by booknerd56

Remember how "Night of the Living Dead" was turned into lukewarm hash by Savini? Well, what will happen to a "Dawn of the Dead" remake? The producers and distributers will want nothing more than an "R" so it can play in theaters everywhere (though I'm sure they'll save the good gore for an unrated DVD release) and the rawness that made this survival epic what it is (and I consider DotD to be the best goddamn survivalist flick ever made) will be merely undercooked tripe like Russo and Hinzman's "Children of the Living Dead".

Why not put all this energy and enthusiasm into the oft-hinted at "Twilight of the Dead", huh? Let's see who survives the final struggle for control of the planet.

Remake "Dawn of the Dead", hem lets think about this....

    by quack_ducky_duck

I'm not sure if it's a great idea or even a good idea or maybe even an idea that should be pondered, but I do have a great exception to it! Let's give Romeo the budget there planning on giving these guys and let him make it, or heck knowing him he could make 6 or 7 zombie films on that budget, it amazing what a little green face paint can do to make someone look like they've been decaying for days.
Reasons they shoulnd't remake Dawn of the Dead,

1.) Romeo's vision of the film is amazing, i mean think about all the little things he put in there, he made it seem as though four people were really put into their situation. Remember the beginning of the film when they go to get supplies and they end up taunting the zombies through the glass window, BRILLIANT! And later on in the film blocking the exits with trucks, MASTERFUL, those are things that real people would do, in real life situations, well if you can consider putting zombie in a small mall in PA real!!!! And my favorite part of the movie has to be when they go on the "hunting raid" and take down the zombies in the mall, lol, its great, and they seem to be having so much fun!

2.) The interaction with the characters is amazing, even if the acting isn't always top notch, the feeling romeo pertrays between them becomes a major part of the film. We have a mother type, who is also a mother to be, a women who is lost in the her situation. She's pulling triple duty, caring for herself, trying to be independant, and worrying that the men are trying to decide her fate! How does she deal with that, she gives them all the finger and tells them that she is just aa important to the group as they are, maybe even more!
Then we have her "BOYFRIEND", man does this guy rub me the wrong way. He looks and acts like Chris McDonald doesn't he? But anyways, he hasn't got the slightest on how to take care of them, i love it he becomes more of a pond than anything, put this her put that their.....its great!
Then we have are commandos, one of the things i love about the Dead movies is the reaccurance of the same character, you know who im talking about, that "black dude" (and now im not racist i've always called him the black dude, that and "DAMN THAT GUY KICKS SOME @$$", maybe thats more of a observation, but ive turned it into his 2nd nickname!). Anyways, he takes away the show, always calm and in control of the stituation, I imagine if the zombies got him and he turned into one of the living dead, he would be singniling the other zombies to follow him and telling them what to do!
And as for a poor comrade whos gets the rath of the dead on himself, I love how romeo take this cool collected guy and uses the situation to turn him into a nut! lol, its fun to watch, and scary at the sametime, thats why this film works on some many levels! And the scene at the end were he rises from his death bed a reborn monster, its an amazing peice of cenima. The scene alone is so shocking becuz of its lead up, we feel for this character, and it asks the question "If you had to kill a loved one after they had turned into a zombie could you do it?", ponder that one for awhile!

3.) Lastly there is no way hollywood could make this film, another reason romeos works live! They would turn it into an ACTION GALORE peice, this is not an action movie this is a film with an emotional interior. Romeo had the ability to make it personal, it's the best exsample of an independant film!
He takes the world we know and reacreates it! Their are so many simple things, such as the hunters in south eastern Pa having a good ol' time taking down the dead! Romeo makes it seem asthough their having the time of their life! What's the leason here? Give a hick a gun, a target, some buddies, maybe a little porno (sadly), and alcohol then who's needs the US army or coast guard, we have all our protection right there! Anyways, this film is amazing there is so much more to mention. Just remember the scenes were our heroes have over the mall and make it home, they know the dead are outside, but they go on asthough its never happened.....this is their new life and the accept it! That's a great message and undertone to give other's, things happen in life, ACCPEPT IT, and make the best of it!

Romeo is qouted as saying something in the lines of, Dawn of the Dead was so simple to make it was easier than rolling off a log. If i were to compare this film to a log it would be that of a Red Wood, with years of wisdom behind it, and still stands proud! This film will last the test of ages, a feet, I fear, alot of modern cinema wont acheive. It's greatness is up their with OZ, Wonka, Silence, and those films you ponder for years after youv seen them! It's one of those things you discuss with your buddies arround a camp fire for years!

For my closing I'd like to say I could praise this films for day! But I'll stop here, the best way to understand is go watch it, you could prolly buy it at any dollar store.....LOL.....i remember my brother bought it at a record store for 20$, and then we found it the next week at wal-mart for 3$, hehehe.....thats a classic for you! But anyways, it will shock you, amaze you, horrfy you, Romeo is brillant, i'd love to see if he can still hold up his reputation after all this years! (His script for Resident Evil, you know the one they tunred down, wouldn't have won any awards, but it was still more interesting than Anderson's: PS: i would have liked anderson's movie had it been complex like the living dead films!) So go watch it!
I'd like to leave you with this thoght, when my Uncle and Aunt first started dating they went to see Dawn of the Dead. About a quarter of the way through my Aunt had to leave the theatre, it was just to much for her. In retrospect she waited two hours for my uncle to come out after he had finished watching it! Thats diffinately saying something for the lore of the film....not to mention you just don't diss your girl on a first date for a film unless its got soemthing going for it (even then i dont think you should) I'm kinda surprised they ended up together! :/?

    DUCK

PS: anyone remember the end credits with the zombies walking arround in the mall, I still get chills from the that!

PSS: don't make the remake unless you think you can out do romeo! GOOD LUCK!

PSS: Pennsylvania 1#! where the only state with zombie movies that don' suck! SLIGO LOVE!

"With it's incredibly labored syntax and effluvial rantings, your writing reads a lot like Edward D. Woods, Jr." -- it's "its" and "Edward D. Wood, Jr."...i guess we'd never accuse you of anything resembling labor...
