Finally - A Miyazaki Film Pushed Correctly For The Mass American Audience - SPIRITED AWAY Trailer!!!
Hey folks, Harry here... I'm working up my review of the Japanese DVD of SPIRITED AWAY which I absolutely flipped 7 times over and did an amazing series a back handsprings with full twists over too. I mean, this is how you do it. Of course putting John Lasseter in charge was the genius move this time out. John GETS it. He understands the magic of animation... whether it be Computer Animated or Hand Drawn. Personally - Putting John in charge of Disney Animation and just handing Disney Corp in general to Steve Jobs would be... well the smartest damn thing Disney's shareholders could ever do.
What I love about this trailer is that, while I know what all the images are, and how they fit into the story, at no point do they give you the key information about what the storyline is, what the key twists will be, what any of the important parts that tell this story are. They treat the film as though it is magical, and it is. They treat the film as though it is one of the most beloved animated films of all time in the world - it actually is. The trailer treats the movie like it is a great film by an important world filmmaker at the height of his powers, and it and Hayao are exactly that. Ya know, I bought the Japanese DVD because I have no faith in Disney companies in treating foriegn films with the respect they deserve. Check it out... You'll be elated that you did!
Hey Harry,
I've been looking forward to this film forever! I
have a copy of my own that I've been watching every
other day (and I'm the lead editor for a Spirited Away
'Countdown' at another movie info site). I genuinely
believe in this film. Aside from Amelie, this is the
only other film that made me leave the theater with a
huge smile on my face!
Now, go to the link, and experience a trailer that
will hopefully give you chills (I'm watching it for
the tenth time, and still getting chills!).
Sincerely,
uruseiranmaCLICK HERE TO EXPERIENCE A PERFECT TRAILER!

Couldn't help myself, sorry.
Will the official US release have the red tint of the Reg 2 version though?
Ane where's my Bebop movie eh? -
I was quite pleased by the trailer for this and the dub itself seems to be of good quality with Daveigh Chase in particular really capturing her character well. Have seen this movie 6 or 7 times now but will most certainly watch it the day it opens in US theatres and have been recommending others to do the same for a long time now.
-
The premiere of the US version is showing at Big Apple Anime Fest on August 30th however its US title will simply be Cowboy Bebop the Movie as opposed to Knockin' on Heaven's Door. Dreamworks' release of the most recent film from Satoshi Kon (Perfect Blue), Millenium Actress will also premiere at the BAAF.. man I wish I lived in NY :)
-
I've heard nothing bout positive opinions on Spirited Away, but until now I haven't seen a single frame. After seeing that trailer, I want a copy of the DVD in my hands NOW! I gotta see this thing!
-
I believe this movie will even be playing here in The Netherlands! :D But although the dub sounds ok, I hope here it'll play with Japanese audio and subs. As long as they don't give it some cheap Dutch dub :(
-
I hope Rocksteady at least gets a cameo. He was always the more interesting of the two.
-
the voice actress for Chihiro sounds as if she came from the Peanuts school of voice acting. Sigh.... throw another poorly acted dub on the fire.....
The Happy Chicken -
this film does look absolutely fantastic, but the trailer still had that irritating hollywood voice over and i felt they didn't need to use so much of the dialogue. one of the best trailers i can remember seeing was also for a japanese animation, possibly "ghost in the shell": this one had no talking at all - just music and action.
-
This movie was just totally magnifiscient. But I do agree that that hollywood voice really really sucks!!! And having japenese voices with subs would be much better too... But god I love this movie!!! You feel just like a small kid again. Can't wait for the dvd!
-
Hmmm... A Miyazaki Film Pushed Correctly...
What would that be... Saturday
morning on CBS? -
Hmmm... let me see... I think I did!
It's taken Harry this long? There was some poorly written piece of crap put out when the DVD was released by one of his "mates" then I try my best to write something eloquent and coherent frmo the POV of someone in the animation industry.
Well, cheers Harry, but please don't bother reviewing the DVD.... we've all seen it now and would rather know more about the american dub. -
I mis-spelt "form". Fmro. Mofr... form... From! I mis-spelt "morf"! D'OH!
-
Remember. This is a family film made for both adults and children to enjoy. An English dub is needed to reach the widest possible audience. The good news is that I'm sure that we'll get the original voice track on the DVD release. Let's just hope the subtitles are a little better done than the MONONOKE ones. I can't wait for this one and hope it gets a better release than MONONOKE. Who knows? If this is successful enough, we may finally get R1 releases of other Myazaki films.
-
I guess Daveigh Chase (Chihiro) attended the Peanuts school inbetween "Lilo & Stitch" and "Spirited Away"? PM subtitles: There are two versions, one directly from the Japanese audio track done by Studio Ghibli. What's wrong with that version?
-
I think Daveigh Chase has one of the cutest voices around. She was perfect for Lilo and I think she sounds perfect for this role too.
It's pretty tough to find 8 year olds that can do voice acting, but she's good at it.
(She was also really good in Donnie Darko and I heard she was good in The Ring.) -
...that looked fucking great. Princess Mononoke kicked some ass - this looks even better. Hmmm. i think I'll go see it, hhhhhhhiiiiiiiiiiggggggghhhhh........
-
GOD! And I was looking forward to this. Why does nearly every anime that comes stateside SUCK when it gets dubbed? I mean, do the thing right or leave it the fuck alone. I'm sorry, Harry, the animation looks beautiful, the story sounds charming, but the voice acting is FLAT and LIFELESS. And Studio Jibbly? I'm sorry, some of us actually read Japanese and it isn't pronounced Jibbly, that just sounds retarded. If it must be Americanized, at least pronounce it more like Jeebly since that better approaches the actual word (spelled Ghibli in English). Three syllables: ji-ba-ri. *smacks Disney around a bit* lad to have it coming stateside, I guess, but it's suffering from the same problems as Mononoke.
-
Let's see. It's getting a wide release, it isn't cut at all (no Ghibli films will be cut in the USA, it's in the contract they signed with Disney - AICN should know this by now), the dubbing, while not quite COWBOY BEBOP caliber, is perfectly acceptable, they already have confirmed that the US DVD will contain the Japanese track, and the trailer, while not perfect and not in the same league as the French trailer, actually makes a concerted effort to show some respect. It's hilarious that people in this TB are bitching, while over in the KUNG FU SOCCER thread (from now on, I will only refer to Miramax's fucked up version using that title - I don't care what they call the movie, but it isn't SHAOLIN SOCCER, because SHAOLIN SOCCER wasn't a children's movie), they're saying that godawful abortion of a trailer's not that bad! Has the world gone mad? Of course it has! That crunching sound you hear is me eating my words, when I said that the SPIRITED AWAY poster leaked here was almost certainly a fan-fake. It actually is the real poster!
-
"A Miyazaki Film Pushed Correctly For The Mass American Audience?" That would imply that PRINCESS MONONOKE was pushed at all. The only pushing done there was Miramax pushing it face-first into the dirt when they fucking buried it with a completely botched release.
-
Daveigh Chase did do some wonderful work in 'Lilo & Stitch' (my favorite film of the summer) and she is downright creepy as Samara in the 'Ring' remake. She seems like a great choice for this particular movie so I can't say that I really have a problem with the voice talent so far. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind subtitles at all, I just think that if the right talent is involved then maybe an English dub isn't such a bad idea. As for this young actress, I see a bright future ahead... but if I'm wrong, maybe she'll round up the old 'Sparkle Motion' gang for a reunion tour in about twenty five years (just kidding, you're going places)!
-
Just kidding - I still get a kick out of the people NOT 1st who type that.
Anyway. I don't always agree with Harry's reviews, but he's RIGHT on the money with this one. This is the first movie I've seen in a loooooooong time that made me actually wish I was 10 years old again ... I'm relieved to see Disney is actually doing it justice.
Animated or not, this was the best movie I saw last year.
-
Ah, one last point. Haven't seen anyone bring this up yet, but the soundtrack to this movie was just stunning. Get it if you can. Miyazaki films consistently have hauntingly appropriate music; "Spirited Away" took it to a new level. I kid you not.
-
...isn't he? While it's a fair bit wider than MONONOKE was, and an unprecedented # of screens for a non kiddy "monster" videogame franchise anime, I think saying "mass American public" is a bit much. Still, at least the Disney haters will have to find something else to blame besides the marketing when this flops, as I fear it will (though I would very much like to be wrong), at the "limited" box office.

Holy Sweet Weeping Mother of Carpenter Christ!!! ------------------ That is the MOST gorgeous fucking beautiful animation trailer I've ever seen in my 33 years of living and breathing all things animated! Man, oh man, is that brilliant...... It is frightening, sentimental, colorful, fluid, enchanting, and all those other things people have been saying since they saw it in San Francisco!! Moriarty, I hate you just a little bit, you lucky bastard. All of us need to consider ourselves blessed to live in a time when Miyazaki is alive and producing his best work! --------------------------------- Goddamn, I can't wait for this (and for The Two Towers)!!
-
Now I'm going to have to go watch that 600mb subtitled avi that I got off of Kazaa again... (and before anyone bitches, yes, I'm still going to go see it in the theater, and buy the eventual dvd)

That trailer gives WAY too much away. Why not just give away th
by devil goat
My advice is if you want to see it, hold off on seeing the trailer... I know it's hard.
One thing I will say is that Mr. Lasseter appears to have got some good American voices together here.
And yes, "Ghibli" is pronounced "Jibbly". I never get used to it, and still say "Gibbly". -

Spirited Away, Cowboy Bebop sub version WILL be released in the
by junkbomb
You can already get tickets for both subbed and dubbed version of Spirited Away at El Capitan:
http://cms.disney.go.com/disneypictures/el_capitan/
At the Cowboy Bebop screening at Egyptian Theater, a Columbia Tri Star guy handling the movie confirmed that the subtitle version will be released in some theaters. -
I've babbled enough about the movie in my previous Japanese DVD review of Spirited Away (my apology for fragmented sentences) so the film is deserving of a well-advertised theatrical release instead of going straight to video obscurity. I made a request at a first-run arthouse theater (not Tower Theatre) to book the subtitled print of Spirited Away, hoping that other theatre managers will exhibit dubbed print elsewhere in Salt Lake City. I suggest Harry hold his review of Spirited Away until third week of September, and better after he have seen the glorious print on the silver screen so he can comment on the experience of viewing the movie with the audience, young and old. Here's hoping Spirited Away will snag a Best Foreign Language Film Oscar nomination that Pom Poko failed to attain in 1995.

I've seen it, I love it, and yeah, this trailer gives away a lot more than I knew the first time I saw SA, but I have faith the film can make something of an audience. For one thing, this film has a lot of the charm that couldn't be a part of Mononoke's epic storytelling. It has a lot the same wonder and discovery in, say, the Harry Potter books. And if HP could overcome culture shock, SA has a chance. The dub sounds fine, but I think anyone who sees the subtitled version first will agree the Japanese track is endlessly charming even if you don't speak Japanese. It just sounds so good. It's part of the magic. But I can't expect that to work for a mass US release, trying to reach many audience members who either can't read or can't read well/fast enough to watch a whole movie in subs. So long as they get the character of Yu Baaba's voice right. She was too much. I thought they'd get Cloris Leachman(she'd be excellent) but I think it's Suzanne Plachette, who'll do good too I imagine. Lilo will never quite match Chihiro's voice though. I know, not that big a deal, just one of those things. I think the version you see first tends to be the one you prefer in most cases.
-
Yeah, the trailer does show some important scenes however unlike say the Shaolin Soccer one, the way it presents itself is not that of a spoiler but rather of a taste of what is in the movie. Here's hoping when this has a 100% Tomatometer it will be able to attract those who may otherwise overlook it, the finest film of 2001 and likely its US version will be the finest film of 2002 as well.

Today I received one of those solicitations to see Spirited Away at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood. Woo Hoo! I am curious about this movie (it looks great), and seeing it via digital projection with great sound is going to rock, not to mention I will be able to reserve a seat, not have to wait in line (literally can walk in 5 minutes before it starts and grab my pre-paid soda, popcorn, and sit in my reserved seat). Of course I will have to pay a little more for the above amenities, but heck, with the price of tickets being what they are, El Capitans VIP admissions prices are no longer that ridiculous (you can end up spending almost 19 dollars on a ticket, soda, and popcorn at any old theater...and you would have to wait in line for all of the above, VIP tickets eliminate all that crappy waiting). Almost forgot to mention, next door will be a gallery of concept art and storyboard sketches that went into the making of many of Miyazaki's films. I am going to have FUN, sure beats seeing it on DVD only for sure.
-
The man himself, Miyazaki, will be at the Sept 10th screening of Miyazaki at the El Capitan Theatre and will do Q and A after the Film. See you there...
-
It was suppose to say Spirtited Away instead of Miyazaki...My Bad.
-
...except after 'c', or when sounding like 'a' as in neighbor or weigh. also, didn't that last scene in the trailer just scream out "falcor!" to you or what? for those of you who don't remember, falcor was the flying thing in neverending story. seriously though, I can't wait to see this film.
-
Okay, so it's not exactly the worst dubbing I've ever heard. But given the choice, I'll probably listen to the original audio just like I prefer to watch "Run Lola Run" or "The City of Lost Children" with their original audio tracks.
-
Looks far less hard to understand (for the average moviegoer & their kids) than Princess Mononoke, but still has a great, complex plot. Nice to see Disney is bringing in such quality, since they can't make it themselves these days. ******* I am NOT looking forward to their "fantasy-universe version of Treasure Island." JEEZ-US! They couldn't have given us REAL GOD-DAMNED SPACESHIPS in an outer space version of that classic?
-
No seriously, this is great!
One problem, though. If this is going to be a limited release, be prepared for a screw job. When Mononoke came out on a test release HERE in Minneapolis 2 years ago, they didn't do a good job on getting the word out. Hence the movie didn't do well, and we got the blame that the movie didn't get a wider release. Now Spirited Away, a movie that could be the HIGHLIGHT of 2002, may suffer the same fate. GET THE WORD OUT YALL! Trust me I will!!! Give me a release date and I'll make sure everyone can recite it from memory!!!
