Trailer for Takeshi Kitano's DOLLS!

Published at:  Aug 03, 2002 4:20:22 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here... I'm not sure what this film is about, but the cinematography and use of colors in Kitano's DOLLS is simply breathtaking, and having the two characters tied together reminds me a bit of RAGGEDY ANN AND ANDY, but maybe that's just me. Suppose it could also remind of THE 39 STEPS, but it just seems too lyrical for that. Here ya go, check out that trailer... Tis a beaut!

Hey fellas,

Second-time contributor (I wrote a review for Battle Royale when it premiered in LA a couple of years ago at the Egyptian.)

I've been wondering what the hell Takeshi Kitano has been up to lately and I happened to find a trailer for his next movie "Dolls" here:

I'm a huge Kitano fan and this trailer looks pretty damn good.  Though this short snipet doesn't really shed much light on what the movie might be about, some of the shots are incredibly beautiful and mysterious--definitely a sight to behold.

I'm thinking Kitano isn't acting in this one, but I could be wrong.  Either way, it's a new Takeshi film which has got me dancing a jig.  Now all we can do is hope for a US release.

Since the site is in Japanese I can't quite make out much, but it does look like it's coming out in Japan in 2002.

Sincerely,

Hecubus

I like most of Beat Kitano's films but...

    by fd resurrected

...I think the incomprehensibly weirdest movie Kitano made was 1990 baseball-cum-yakuza 3-4x Jugatsu aka Boiling Point. What the hell was THAT about? I've never seen Kikujiro or the uncut/edited R-rated versions of Brother because I heard bad word of mouth about these movies. I like Sonatine, A Scene at the Sea and Kids Return but found them...strange. Violent Cop, Kitano's directorial debut, was interesting in the vein of Dirty Harry series but kind of empty. However, for me, the best movie Kitano made was Hana-Bi (Fireworks). I raved about that movie at Sundance 1998. Fireworks is a masterpiece of poetic violence and tranquil sincerity. Hana-Bi made me an instant Kitano fan, but for the most part his other films are interesting and bizarre in-between. As for Dolls, it looks like it might be another visual masterpiece similar to Hana-Bi, though I hope the has plausible character development rather than superficial typical of Kitano's creation. I guess Beat likes to throw us off the track with his unconventional filmmaking method of picking the weirdest stories to run with.

The Non-Quicktime trailer is really nice too. I can't wait to see this in October when it comes out here in Japan.

The name is not "Beat Kitano"

    by rain_dog

It's Beat Takeshi or Takeshi Kitano, depending on whether he's wearing his actor or director hat. It makes no sense for him to be called Beat Kitano, because, I think, Kitano is his given name any. Not that I'm an expert. I've only seen Hana-Bi, and I was mashed off my tits at the time so it's a little foggy.

For those of you that don't read Japanese...

    by jennababe

it looks like the theme of the film is "LOVE" period. There are going to be three separate stories of "LOVE" with different characters, and Kitano will bring them all together at the end. Maybe a little Pulp Fictionage going on? We shall see. The trailer and music is absolutely beautiful.

I've never seen a Beat Takeshi film...

but that trailer was absolutely beautiful. The piano score was extremely haunting. Not sure what the film is about, but I just might have to track this one down. Thanks to Harry and the guy who sent him the link.

    Brother!

    by acaana

I finally saw "Brother" the other day on MovieCentral here in the Great White North, and I gotta say I was rather... underwhelmed. It had some great moments, some beautiful shots, blah blah blah, but at several points I just thought the acting sucked! Especially Omar Epps' little "I love you, my brutha!" at the end.

On a seperate note, I always thought it was Takashi in "Shall We Dance?", but I guess it wasn't!

    Awesome!

    by meier

I'm a big fan of Beat Takeshi and can't wait to see this some day. I'm curious who the above poster heard negative word of mouth about Kikujiro from? That movie is excellent. I think Brother was probably the weakest film I have seen from him, but it was entertaining overall.

    Beat's the man

    by the gline

I've recorded commentaries at dvdtracks.com for two Kitano movies: VIOLENT COP and GETTING ANY? (his infamous flop comedy). COP is classic Kitano -- blunt-noised nihilistic drama. I've got plans for HANA-BI and SONATINE as well -- in fact, just about all the Kitano movies as I get them... I also reviewed HANA-BI here: http://www.thegline.com/dvd-of-the-week/2002/05-23-2002.htm

    It's unfortunate that

    by jennababe

...some people will see 'Brother' as their first Kitano film. 'Brother' by far is one of the weakest of his films overall. When Japanese directors try to incorporate American actors/crew into the mix of Japanese film making, they always seem to suck. The Japanese actors were fantastic in their native tongue, but once they started speaking in English they were so far from their comfort zones you could painfully tell they were simply reading their lines. They shouldn't have even tried. I saw Brother at Sundance last year a couple jumps back (the uncensored-original version), and I was still disappointed. The US DVD has cut out all the great 'blunt violence' which is a trademark of most Kitano films. Terribly disappointing. In the uncut version they actually show the bullet go into the guy's head when he commits suicide, while the US version only shows the blood splatter on the wall after a big bang. They tore that movie apart. There are great moments in 'Brother', most of which unfortunately the censors have cut out. They did the same thing with Miike's 'Audition'. I always tell people they have to watch either Hana-Bi, Sonatine, or Kikujiro as their first Kitano film. Those are his true signature pieces. I'm very anxious to see Dolls. It seems Kitano is taking a daring step into grounds he hasn't covered yet. A Kitano love story? The closest Kitano came to a love story was Hana-Bi. It will be interesting to see how he handles this film with a new approach.

    Love stories

    by tokyo joe

Ano Natsu Ichiban Shizuka na Umi was kind of a love story wasn't it? That was a really beautiful film, Dolls looks more so. I'm really looking forward to this, On the big screen Hana-bi was fantastic.

    Looks good!

    by tobizaru

Wow! I definitely want to be in Japan in October to see this movie, but I would anxiously and willingly wait for the U.S. release unless of course I just happen to be in Japan at that time. Although the movie looks visually fabulous, I hope the story is as engaging. Visually I particularly loved those scenes where the couples are walking through the autumn leaves and the cherry blossoms. (Perhaps a hint these three love stories take place in different times of the year or cover a timespan covering these seasons. Just a thought.) As one person mentioned above, the music sounds great too. According to the credits at the end of the trailer we once again have Joe Hisaishi (who also composed for other great recent Japanese films like Fireworks, Kikujiro, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, etc.) to thank for this score. Also as one person mentioned Beat Takeshi doesn't seem like he will have a starring role in this one, as his name isn't included in the credits. Nevertheless, I think this one is definitely a must-see Takeshi Kitano film.

    by timothycarey

not making fun, mate -- i just wanted to type it, sort of like saying a sentence out loud you otherwise aren't familiar with...beat takeshi has been an interesting cinematic presence since _merry christmas, mr. lawrence_, but let's admit that this is a man who has found a shtick and is schticking with it -- a disquieting capacity for melding the brutally dystopian with an almost (sometimes thoroughly) innocent humanism. one part abel-ferrara-doing-john-woo, one part _amelie_ and several parts of a truly iconic mug in beat's puss, long stare, intermittent twitch and, um, reserve. yeah. reserve. but some of his stuff works better than others. _brother_ was disarmingly weak, and those who know him only from this work truly do not know him (but mad propers to omar epps for gambling on an international path to cool -- snake eyes, but, hey, we can all imagine what shit is piling up on his agent's desk for him to read through...). weird, yes, but i believe _boiling point_ was his best film, particularly in the way that the ancillary characters were changed by their experience at the end of the film. my favorite, in any case. the prospect of a beat takeshi romance seems too intrguing to pass up. besides, i always wanted to see abel ferrara do _benny & joon_...

    Hey, Jennababe...

    by thepoleofjustice

...what did they do to AUDITION? I've only seen the American DVD, but it seems to me that they couldn't have really left anything out. Not that the film couldn't get more intense, but what was in there was so over the top, I can't imagine that someone would say "well, ten full minutes of torture is OK, but NOT THIS!" Maybe the DVD was uncut, and I'm babbling over nothing :P Anyway, Takeshi...I actually liked BROTHER, although I wouldn't put it up there with his best work. I stick to my theory that the Takeshi character is really the same guy, being resurrected, and going through worse and worse lives until he figures it out. Can't friggin' wait for DOLLS. Takeshi is one of those guys that I will watch in ANYTHING, even utter crap (much like Jackie Chan and Bruce Willis, now that I think about it.)

Kikujiro as somebody's first Kitano? Wouldn't that be kind of like somebody's first De Niro being Analyze This? Not that Kikujiro doesn't kick ass, but you'd lose a whole 'nother layer of the film if you didn't go in with some idea of the type of character he normally plays.
