AICN COMICS, TV and MORE: San Diego - Snake Plissken is Back!
Hey folks, Harry here... Seems that Snake Plissken is on the move again. At San Diego Con this year they will be debuting a little preview comic of the JOHN CARPENTER'S SNAKE PLISSKEN CHRONICLES, which the following press release tells us will be stage one of a larger series of announcements regarding the character of Snake Plissken and the 'ESCAPE FROM' franchise. I wonder if this mean John will get a chance to do his special edition of ESCAPE FROM L.A. that he once told me he'd love to toy with, as he apparently was never 100% satisfied with the version that was rushed into theaters. At the very least the reports of Plissken being dead seem to have been exaggerated yet again. Here's the press release and some art that was sent out tonight!
SNAKE IS BACK... AND STILL A BADASS!

STUDIO CITY, CA -- July 28, 2002 -- Hurricane Entertainment has partnered with the legendary talents of Director John Carpenter, Producer Debra Hill and Actor Kurt Russell to produce a new comic book series based on the continuing adventures of their infamous anti-hero SNAKE PLISSKEN. Plissken is the lead character of the 1981 classic science fiction film ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK.
The series, entitled JOHN CARPENTER'S SNAKE PLISSKEN CHRONICLES, will premiere in the Spring of 2003. Tone Rodriguez, penciller on the breakout comic VIOLENT MESSIAHS, from Image Comics, will draw the series in his trademark hyper-realistic, gritty style. When asked about what he thought of Tone's sketches Carpenter responded "They’re great. We’ve got a great artist here. I grew up with comic books, going way back, and I was always interested in the art. So I’m very delighted, very delighted."
Hurricane Partner William O'Neill will write "Snake". William is best known as the co-creator of the hit series VIOLENT MESSIAHS and the fan favorite CHASSIS, a recent Wizard Magazine treasure chest pick. Jan Utstein-O'Neill, CEO of Hurricane, which produces the aforementioned comics, adds, "We are very excited at the potential of this project and the chance to work with such esteemed talent as John, Debra and Kurt. It's not often that you get the opportunity to take such a well known and an iconic figure as Snake and explore new adventures along with his Creators."
The comic series, which begins "Early the next day..." continues the first story of Snake Plissken a once respected, highly decorated "Defender of the American Dream" who encountered a nightmare, the likes of which no one could ever image, or experience. What emerged is a man who is not a loner, but one who realizes that we are all, in fact, alone…and he is completely comfortable in this knowledge. Snake is a cool, dark and dangerous escape "Artist" - who always gets the last laugh, because he ultimately knows that the joke is on himself.
This comic book is only one part of a much larger launch that will be revealed in the coming months. The deal was brokered and packaged by Kevin Cleary and Josh Morris of ACME Talent and Literary in Los Angeles. According to Debra Hill "Our goal is to brand SNAKE PLISSKEN like other movie or comic book icons such as Spider-Man, Batman and Superman starting with the new Comic from Hurricane. In addition to the comic, 2003 and 2004 will see a release of novels, a Japanese Anime feature and a video game. A new DVD collection of ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK will be coming out next spring from MGM. It will feature missing footage, lots of new commentary and interviews from the original "Escapees" as well as some surprises that will make Snake fans very happy."
The first step in this launch is a "Sneak Preview" book. This book, filled with Tone's gripping art and an exclusive interview with John Carpenter, will be available for the first time at the San Diego Comic Con. The San Diego Comic Con will be held at the San Diego Convention Center, August 1-4th and is the largest comic book related event in North America. Debra Hill, who's Writing and Producing credits also include the HALLOWEEN films, THE FOG and THE FISHER KING will be signing copies, along with Tone and William, on Friday, August 2nd at the Hurricane booth, # 1235c, come by the booth to check for exact times.

...what about the hideous-sounding TV series they've been talking about to be directed by Jamie 'couldn't direct anything remotely watchable with a gun to my head' Blanks? And what alterations to the piss-poor ESCAPE FROM LA are you talking about? Is it just the special effects? I think that film's problems go a little bit further than that. And what about this thing I read somewhere about Carpenter and Kurt doing DAY OF THE TRIFFIDS?
-
I know you are only a fictional character, but welcome back bud. Anyway my point is this. ESCAPE FROM LA was a hoot. I don't care if it was a remake of the first one or that it's in the second tier of John Carpenter pictures (the ones that aren't classics[THE THING, HALLOWEEN, THEY LIVE], but also aren't garbage [GHOSTS OF MARS]). I mean how can you not enjoy the gladiator combat being replaced by a basketball game? That was some good shit. I hope at least one of these Snake tie-ins is good (most likely the dvd set).

What took them so long? I always thought that it was about fuckin
-
...is it gonna be about Cleveland or whatever town it was everybody thought Snake died in? Also, of course Carpenter wasn't 100% satisfied with Escape From LA. Nobody was. It was lame. Also, how does Snake get around so well with no depth perception? Or Sammy Davis Jr. or Peter Falk for that matter? sk

A lot of people (obviously) diss this sequel but I loved it. I'd love to see Carpenter return to it with a special edition. In the meantime the comic sounds like the perfect way to fill in the blanks on Snake's adventures. And seeing as it's a comic, maybe we'll get to see the late Lee Van Cleef's Hauk character from NY make a reapperance.

a Jack Burton comic. Come on, its a natural! "Return To Little China" or some such. Hell let Keith Giffen write it (look at his runon Justice League International back in the late 80s). You know it's a good idea...

This is excellent news!!! There are so many elements of Snake that can be explored. I'm a huge fan of the character and have always wanted more of his past to be revealed, in particular, his days as a soldier and why he chose to throw it all away. It'll be so cool to learn more about his previous operations in the military and his tranformation from decorated soldier boy into Snake, the bank robbing anarchist bas ass. I hope the comic covers material like this.
I'm truly excited about this and cannot wait to get my hands on a copy!!! It's gonna be a huge success, you have my support! -
Sure, it's about time but who cares! Snake is back in action!!! This news has really made my day. People who did'nt enjoy E.F.L.A did'nt get it anyway so, why bother kicking up a fuss over the comic? I've been a fan since E.F.N.Y, I'm just grateful that like minded people are keeping the coolest anti-hero of all time alive. This buds for you!
-
Never did figure out how that came to be. I mean, no "Halloween" or "Thing" board games but "Escape From New York"? Sure, why not. Anyway, just thinking aloud...
-
Both those movies sucked, especially the 2nd. That was a turd that sank right to the bottom of the stool. I'm sure that as you Snake dorks read this you pick up a rallying cry of Bruce Campbell was in it, Bruce is God!!!! As Shatner would say, "Get a life". Snake Plisskin is a shit character in a shit movie. Kurt Russell was going down on John Carpenter to keep putting him in all his movies. Snake Plisskin is a fucking wannabe Mad Max. I wouldn't line my grandmother's birdcage with a copy of this book.

And Snake looks like a poofy male model on that cover up there. They need to get the Russell pose right.

In comics, we might get to read an adventure that does the character justice. Spectacular!

I have tried to access. www.comic-con.org the past coupel of days, but it seems to be down! I am onl going on Saturday, but I have not yet written down what events I wanted to see and what times they take place to help plan out the day! COuld somebody post a wokring link or Saturday's scheldue? I would much appreciate it.

What the hell is hyper-realistic style? It just seems like an oxymoron to me. Any talkbalkers want to help me out with this one, please?

Though I don't think it rivals the first film I do think ESCAPE FROM L.A. is a helluva lot of fun and is way underrated. It also has one one damn cool closing scene. From comments made here and elsewhere I see I'm not alone in the enjoyment of this flick. The tone is a lot goofier than the first but that's in keeping with the craziness of L.A. itself. Plus it's interesting to see how it plays off the first film. In fact both these flix resonate even more today with the premise of government over stepping its authority in the name of protection. Another movie would be great but it ain't gonna happen so I'm curious to see the return of Snake to comics, novels, or video games. Just as long as they don't run it into the ground with some dumbass syndicated TV series.
-
It's an exact copy of the first only done shitty! Glider->Sub. Wrestling->Basketball. Pres.->Pres. Daughter. Rip tape, end world->no power, end world. I could continue.
-
FUCK! the comic looks lame, get keith geffin to do it (LOBO OWNS J00, so does bruce campbell) also, more jack burton!! but really. carpenter has a script for ESCAPE FROM EARTH (the third escape movie, ohh yeah, you knew it was there) one of them (j.c. or kurt) said it was a fucking kickass script, all he needs is the funding and the goahead, ah well. J.C. has so many great projects that never come to fruit :(( the fog 2, the thing 2, BTILC 2? Prince Of Darkness 2, EVERYTHING CAN DO WITH A SEQUEL! I LOVE HIS MOVIES! AND HIS SOUNDTRACKS! Ghosts of mars was alright, still great fun and watchable! i'll buy this comic, just no shitty marvel storylines ok? i thought you died in cleveland! haha

Carpenter wasn`t satisfied with "Escape From L.A."? Well guess

Although the very end was cool, I`ll give it that. And for the record, "Ghosts Of Mars" was actually pretty cool.

This is exciting as all hell. The Snake Plisken franchise may finally live up to it's true potential. I am mondo excited about the new DVD release. I am worried about the anime film, though. Any time Western properties are adapted into manga form it's a risky proposition. Original manga properties like Star Blazers, Battle of the Planets, Tranzor Z, those were cool anime. Most other anime, however, (with a few exceptions) is derivative and unoriginal. But I digress. Hopefully the comic book will do snake justice. And the novels, boy, I can hardly wait!

True EFNY fans appreciate EFLA as a clever reworking of the orig
by arcturus
Those who bad-mouth EFLA just don't get it. EFLA was a gift to us EFNY fans. Carpenter and Co. came up with the quite skillful updating of the Snake legend that is EFLA. Who cares if it's a remake? I challenge any who say it's not a damn good one.

Hey, who out there would like to see...oh, say a Captain America flick that begins back in WWII with a scene out of the opening of "Private Ryan" only with Cap leading a squad of GI's into battle (maybe the "Howling Commandos?). The scene could end with the explosion of the Nazi plane and his deep freeze journey to the present day where his anachronistic views, especially on America in general would cause him no end of angst. Or am I just a crazy fan-boy with delusions of the grandeur of the character?
Anyway, just ruminating. Later. -
"EFLA" may have been, in *someone's* mind, a "clever reworking", but it was nothing more than an uninspired re-hash of a great movie, unworthy of Carpenter, Hill & Russell. "EFLA" had some cute moments (&, okay, the ending kicked ARSE!!), but I just didn't get the sense of urgency that "EFNY" had all throughout. Hopefully, they'll get it right again with the comics, novels, & anime movie, with the possibility of more "real" Snake to come.
BRING IT ON!!!!!!
