The Truth About RENDEZVOUS WITH RAMA!
Hey folks, Harry here... Got the following from Grant Boucher, who is out to set things straight in regards to the CNET piece that Moriarty put up this morning. Thankfully, it clarifies what many in Talk Back already knew, having read the book and suspected about the CNET reporter's leaps in logic in his piece. Also, you'll be needing to wait a few more years than that article led you to believe too. Here ya go...
I also copied Moriarty on this, Harry…
The power of the Internet is that news travels fast. The danger is that misinformation travels equally fast. L
Yes, it is definitely a mistake. We gave the writer of the CNET article a summary of the film (an accurate one) over the phone, which he summarized very, very inaccurately. Rendezvous with Rama will, under no circumstances, be “Starship Troopered”…
If you take the concept that Spaceguard was created after Italy was wiped out by an asteroid (how the book opens) and then cross mutate it with the crew of Endeavor going to explore and determine the purpose of Rama as it approaches the Earth 100 years (again the truth), you might, just might come up with the idea that he presented as fact (without fact-checking, or searching the Internet, etc.). He also said a film due in 2006 will be out next year.
Fact checking for article writers, people. It is not just a good idea…it should be the law.
Peace,
Grant Boucher

I think in the novel Clarke is implying that Rama was indirectly
by you are banned
He probably posited that Rama's intrusion into our solar system caused a gravitational disturbance of the Oort Cloud, causing various comets and asteroids to leave their orbits and, eventually, to collide with Earth. Thus, Rama was indirectly responsible for Italy's destruction.
-
That's good news. I still say the book, while very interesting and a good read, was slow and slightly anti-climactic. But, then again, I guess it more closely mirrors what a possible real-life first contact scenario could be like. Did that sentence make any sense?

Instead of blindly posting anything that comes from a source you don't specifically know to be false.

Thank you for clearing that mess up for us.

The destruction of part of italy in Rendesvous with Rama has nothing to do with the alien spacecraft. Part of Italy is severly damaged by an asteroid impact, which causes project spacegaurd to be created. and 53 years later, it is this project spaceguard which detects Rama heading for earth, a featureless cylinder 40 miles long and 15 miles in diameter, Captain Norton and the crew of the 'Endeavour' are sent to check it out... It will make a great movie, can't wait

It looks to me like thats an animation of Moriarty licking Harry's sweaty ginger haired ringpiece. The things Mori has to do to work on this site....
-
But Jesus H. Tapdancing Christ on the Cross singing "My Girl", Harry, remove that fucking animation!
-
That animation is simply... too much. BLLEAGGHHHHHHH!!!
-
That straight razor anim has been around the block once or twice. It is kinda 'eww'. But the worst thing about it is its some movie reference that I don't get!
This troubles me deeply. Where's it from, someone?
(for some reason Altered States springs to mind, but that's not it...) -

Grant Boucher is a F@#%ing moron too!!! It was a NUCLEAR BOMB,
by clutchbrake
Have any of you (or any of the dumbass reporters... including this moron Boucher) even read Rendezvous with Rama?!
The asteroid in Rendezvous with Rama did NOT hit Italy. Part of Italy was destroyed when a small nuclear bomb was used to assassinate St. Michael of Sienna.
The Raman ship did not in any way, shape, or form, cause an asteroid to hit Earth. -
The meteor does serious damage to northern Italy on Sept 11th 2077. The nuclear bomb that eliminates Michael of Siena explodes on June 28th 2138, seven years after the events of RWR - all detailed in Rama II (chapter 11). Maybe you should re-read the books yourself.
-
Quoting from the text...
At 0946 GMT on the morning of September 11 in the exceptionally beautiful summer of the year 2077, most of the inhabitants of Europe saw a dazzling fireball appear in the eastern sky. Within seconds it was brighter than the Sun, and as it moved across the heavens-at first in utter silence-it left behind it a churning column of dust and smoke.
Somewhere above Australia it began to disintegrate, producing a series of concussion so violent that more than a million people had their hearing permanently damaged. They were the lucky ones.
Moving at fifty kilometers per second, a thousand tons of rock and metal impacted on the plains of northern Italy, destroying in a few flaming moments the labor of centuries. The cities of Padua and Verona were wiped from the face of the Earth; and the last glories of Venice sank forever beneath the sea as the waters of the Adriatic came thundering landward after the hammer blow from space. -
On your advice I broke out my book and re-read chapter 1. Look who is the flaming dumbass now!!! I was remembering Russia, not Italy. Here is Chaper 1 in it's entirety.
"SPACEGUARD
Sooner or later, it was bound to happen. On June 30, 1908, Moscow escaped destruction by three hours and four thousand kilometers -
With that goddamn animation destroying my mind?!?!?! AAAAhhh...my eyes...my eyes.....
-
What does Starship Trooperized mean? If it will not be Starship Trooperized, does that mean it will not be a brilliant and faithful in spirit film made by a great director?
-
Mori: "Damn, Harry, that's some tasty corn!"
-
what in the blue hell is that animation all about! somebody's weird voyeuristic fantasy????
-
is it from Eyes Wide Shut? The thing up in the corner that I can't look at.....aaaaaargh
-
You are all morons. Seriously, you know NOTHING about ANYTHING. Why do you bother coming onto this site if you can't pick up a simple graphical reference to Kubrick's swan song "Eyes Wide Shut?" Many of the cloaked men in the orgy scene were digitally placed in front of explicit sex scenes to manage an R-rating. That is why the corner animation is so funny. Your stupidity is why you all are.
-
The eye slice animation is patterned on a disturbing special make up effect done in the 1921 (I think) film directed by Luis Bunuel, and designed by Salvador Dali. If you think an eye-slice is shocking, the film has plenty more fucked up scenes where that came from. One of the strangest movies ever made.
-
eyes wide shut? don't think so.
i can't remember the name of the film but it's in b&w and i think it's french.
haven't seen it but it regularly pops up on "most disturbing scene" lists because the slicing of the eye with the razor looks "too real to be fake". legend has it they actually used the eye of a cow (but it had to be refrigerated for a while first, so the "jelly" didn't run all over the place).
you film geeks should know this stuff. it's supposed to be a classic. -
thought we were still on the "eyeball".
but what is up with this one? who is he growling and what's that little guy doing? -
Yes, the Almighty himself smote Italy in response to the interminable bleatings from that nation about its inability to qualify for the World Cup final. Penalty indeed!
-
Hey maybe you should read the posts before you make comments about our intelligence, cause I'm the one who said Eyes Wide Shut...not that it matters, Sucka!
-
ME NOT STUPID. YOU STUPID. HA HA HA. ME SAY YOU STUPID. ME THINK YOU FEEL PRETTY DUMB NOW, HUH? YOU ARE STUPID. STUPID STUPID STUPID. ME KNOW OWN PHONE NUMBER. YOU KNOW ME PHONE NUMBER? HA! DIDN'T THINK SO! WHO DUMB NOW? YOU! HA HA HA! 1+1=2 SEE? SEE? SEE? DANNYCHICO IS STUPID, DANNYCHICO IS STUPID, HA HA HA! ME BET DANNYCHICO SO STUPID HE THINK DAY IS NIGHT. HA HA HA! ME LAUGH AND LAUGH AT DANNYCHICO....
-
I'm kinda scared what David (all style no substance) Fincher will do to this book. Maybe he'll grow up a bit by 2006.
-
Cannot imagine why it is going to take so long to get RAMA onto the big screen, but so be it. Let's hope it does not turn out to be another SPHERE. Let us also hope they don't try to jazz up what is a science fiction mystery, not an action piece. RAMA is justly famous for its methodical pacing.
-
what about the great Songs of a distant earth.....thats the great book written by arthur c" pedophile" clarke im sorry bout the pedophile part but he has been charged like three times already doesnt mean he cant write a great book tho
-
From the opening pages of RAMA, which I read when it was first published, I always thought of the novel as having great cinematic possibilities. Of course SPHERE should have made a great movie too. I guess it very much depends on the filmmakers involved. The sense of awe tone gets from reading RAMA may not translate so easily to the big screen.
