What The Hell Is Going On With RENDEZVOUS WITH RAMA'!

Published at:  Jul 23, 2002 10:58:20 AM CDT

Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab.

I don’t even know what to say about this. I hope it’s one of those non-stories like the Nicholas Brendan as Green Lantern piece (a scoop broken by Superhero Hype and then debunked by them as well) or the HEAVENLY CREATURES fullscreen DVD thing (a misprint that was since corrected by Buena Vista, which has every intention of putting the film out in full widescreen format). I’ll just let you read the letter I got:

Harry, saw this on CNET's www.news.com, RIGHT HERE!!

seems Industrial Light and Magic (and others) are moving to Linux rather than SGI's. Fine and dandy.

What's not so fine, however, is this throwaway line in the article..

Digital Revelations is largely relying on Intel-based computers for the effects on "Rendezvous with Ramah," a thriller coming out next year in which a group of humans seek revenge on aliens that blow up Italy.

Rendezvous with Rama? Aliens that blow up Italy? NOOOOOOOOOO.....

Another scooper seemed equally concerned by the same phrase:

Harry,

I was reading an article over at News.com concerning the shift in computer technology at special effects houses. Nothnig terribly unusual, or even worth mentioning. Until I hit this sentence:

"Digital Revelations is largely relying on Intel-based computers for the effects on "Rendezvous with Ramah," a thriller coming out next year in which a group of humans seek revenge on aliens that blow up Italy. "

Now, they definitely spelled the name wrong, but that's not what bothers me. It's the description of the movie. Perhaps my memory has failed me, but I don't remember the destruction of Italy or the concept of revenge having anything to do with the plot of the original book. Are they completely screwing with the story, or has this been misreported?

You can call me Toothgnip. (And I'll call you Al.)

I have no idea what to say. This can’t possibly be right. Hopefully, we’ll be able to sort out how something so fundamentally wrong might be reported. It’s got to be a mistake. It’s got to be. I’ll just keep telling myself that, because the alternative... it’s too hideous to contemplate.

"Moriarty" out.

    Rama's Revenge??

    by mooeth

I recall Italy being destroyed by a big asteroid in the beginning of the book which led to the early warning system telling us that Rama had entered the solar system. As for revenge, maybe the spirits of vengeful Italians are pissed off, cause other than that the earthlings were just damned scared of the sucka hittin earth and taking out the French or something =P.

    Are you nuts?

    by burlivesleftnut

I remember this part of the book distinctly... the aliens took exception to Italian cooking because the tomato-based sauces gave them indigestion.

    Revenge for Wanda!

    by priestyoungblood

I just read this book a few months ago, and I don't recall revenge being a big theme. I don't recall it being a theme at all... I will say this, and I'll probably get blasted for it - I didn't think the book was that great. I thought it had a fascinating premise, and I liked that it wasn't a "when aliens attack" type of first contact story - I just thought it could have been more developed. Just my opinion though.

that's the weirdest so-called harry head I have ever seen

    by vomit

I'm missing the context on this one. Woah. Anyway RVWR was about awe and mystery in the face of the unknown and a little bit about science. Like a lot of ACC. So unless the movie is at least an hour of "wow, what an amazing place Rama is" then it isn't like the book. For better or worse. Works great on the page, might make a bad movie. I hope not though. Just please don't make them like those horrendous sequels basically ghost written by Gentry Lee. (UGH! BAD! GET AWAY!)

    by indar20

i havent read this book in years, but the way i remember it, asteroids destroy parts of italy, and as a result, a body is formed to prevent such asteroid mishaps. this body then investigates a mysterious object headed toward earth which turns out to be a bigole spaceship. silliness ensues!

First scene of RAMA! ET EXCLUSIVE!

    by neutral_density

Kang: We must take swift and decisive action against the humans. We must demonstrate our might. We must blow up one of their cities.

Kodos: According to our scans, the city the humans call "Italy" is not their defensive stronghold. However if we destroy it, it will piss the humans off immensely.

Kang: Then it has been decided. Annihilate ITALY!! BWAHAHAHAHAAH!!

(Kodos presses the "Italy Annihilator cannon" button)

OR as I like to call it, Eyes Wide What? Ya know, if they're sticking with the "revenge-for-italy" theme, it seems like someone read the first 20 pages of the book, then made the rest up. LAME.

Somehow, even as callous and dumb as we know people in Hollywood can be, this just can't be true.

    Have you read the book?

    by captainwalker

Hi guys. Let's all keep calm here. If you'll go back to the origional book, and read it carefully, the opening scene involved an asteroid slamming into the Italian Alps. This is what encourages a somewhat United Earth to close the barn door after the escape of the mule by establishing a program called SpaceGuard. The function of this program is to find, and track all of the objects within solar System that could present a potential threat to Earth. Guess what they find guys! It actually sounds like they're intending to stay true to Clarkes' origional vision. For a change.

Some rambling thoughts while I dick around at work.

    by sod off baldric

Rambling thought #1: Hotchie Motchie! I turn my head for a second to read the Lost in La Mancha review, and look back only to find eight-krabillion new news stories. How did I miss that?!?! Rambling thought #2: I'm looking forward to Rendezvous with Rama, even though I really don't see how the book will translate to the screen. I mean, as interesting as the story was, it was still slightly boring and meandered all over the place before reaching a somewhat anti-climactic ending. Rambling thought #3: When it comes to relationships, why must women constantly play these stupid little games? Rambling thought #4: Harry's new corner animation...EW! That's it.

    Destruction of Italy (explained)

    by dastinson

If some ad hype didn't screw up the concept, there is an asteroid hit in the beginning of the book whichleads to the Spaceguard project, which searches the sky for possible Earth-impacting asteroids. It is in the search for such asteroids that Rama is discovered.

Even money we've got an idiot media flack who has never read the book who presumed the asteroid strike had something to do with Rama itself.

eyes wide shut? don't think so. i can't remember the name of the film but it's in b&w and i think it's french. haven't seen it but it regularly pops up on "most disturbing scene" lists because the slicing of the eye with the razor looks "too real to be fake". legend has it they actually used the eye of a cow (but it had to be refrigerated for a while first, so the "jelly" didn't run al over the place).
