DEUS EX To Be Adapted Into A Film'!

Published at:  Jul 23, 2002 10:57:00 AM CDT

Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab.

SPY HUNTER isn’t the only videogame property that was announced this week. Seems like games are almost as hot a source right now as comic books. Check this out:

Harry! (or whoever is holding down the geek fort)

Hiya! I'm a longtime reader who stumbled across an interesting bit of news while scouring the net. Apparently Columbia Pictures has secured the rights to make a movie based on the popular video game Deus Ex. Fans of the game should be ecstatic knowing that Deus Ex, rated the 10th best game of all time by PC Gamer Magazine, is making it's way to the big screen. The game revolves around J.C. Denton, an anti terrorism agent who unravels an X-files-ish world conspiracy and features what is arguably the most compelling Sci-fi story ever told through the medium of the computer game. Laura Ziskin, fresh off of producing Spider Man for Columbia, is attached to produce. Columbia is apparently gung-ho about Deus Ex, because they are already talking about the potential of a franchise. My only hope, as a loyal fan, is that the studio doesn't shy away from some of the pre 9-11 terrorist themes in the game.

Call me D.A.N. 1138

Thanks for the tip, man. I don’t know the game, but I’m willing to bet that many of you do, and will you’re opinions as to the viability of the film. Let’s see...

"Moriarty" out.

The game has a great plot actually.

    by thx777b

The game was very succesful in the mid 99's. It had a mjor plot and it was a cool hybrid between first person and adventure gaming. If it will be a good movie or not, it depents... if they hire Paul Anderson!

    for those who don't know

    by the paladin

    The Deus Ex Story
    ---------------------------------
    ---------------------------------
    ---------------------------------
The year is 2052 and the world is a dangerous and chaotic place. Terrorists operate openly, killing thousands; drugs, disease, and pollution kill even more. The world's economics are close to collapse and the gap between the insanely wealthy and the desperately poor has grown to the size of the Grand Canyon. Worst of all, an ages old conspiracy bent on world domination has decided that the time is right to emerge from the shadows and take control. No one believes they exist. No one but you. In this thrilling roleplaying adventure you play the part of a powerful, nanotechnologically augmented anti-terrorist agent. It's up to you to stop the conspirators from achieving their goals. But this world is full of lies and betrayal, a world where nothing is as it seems and entire nations can seemingly be turned against you at the push of a button. To succeed, you must travel the globe in a quest for knowledge, develop your character's strengths as you see fit, build a network of allies to assist you, determine when stealth and strategy are more important than action. And each time you think you've got the mystery solved, the game figured out, there's another, deeper mystery to be unraveled. You will never know who to trust, who your friends are, who's in the conspiracy and who's innocent. Maybe no one is.....

Deus Ex - Yeah, baby, yeah

    by jefe'

I am in the middle of playing this game for the umpteenth time. It really does have a good plot (in some cases prescient to 9/11). I have been thinking since playing again that what happens here is not too far afield from what _could_ happen in this "war on terror". Heres hoping:

    a) They don't chicken out from the very difficult themes post 9/11
b.) They don't come up with some lame-azz gamg-cum-movie script. (Imagine some hollywood weenie type saying "wouldn't it be cool if we blow this up?")

    El Jefe' out.

Have no idea how they'll adapt it for the screen, though. I'd always thought I'd see a cheap Sci-Fi channel adaptation directed by some X-Files hack before seeing a big screen version. Hmmm. Since my picks for director seem busy on other films (Fincher and Aronofsky), I wonder who they can get that would do this project justice. Oliver Stone, maybe? lol...

    Too big...

    by ernst blofeld

I'm playing it now for the first time (just got it cheap on budget) and it is rock hard. How many times have I died just trying to pick off snipers before they get me. I have to say I'd thought about 3 levels in I'd completely fucked myself, because all my so called colleagues turned on me. I'd heard the game had three different endings and i'd chosen the superfast one, where they kill me for being a traitor. Anyway, my real point is, the game is huge - no way they could cram it into a movie. Are they just going to take the best parts or invent an entirely new story for JC. (Mind, half the film will be filled with Denton going to his notebook to look up all those keycodes...)

The great Warren Spector actually pitched this in a british game

    by scorpio2nd

He said that he intially saw JC Denton as Matt Damon but by the time the game was finished, everyone said that he looked like John Travolta. He added that Arnie would be Gunther Herman, Nick Cage would be Walton Simons (my favourite character), and Mako would play Tracer Tong. Add to that, Kevin Spacey as Bob Page, Jimmy Smitts as Jock, James Earl Jones as Morgan Everett, and any hot chick other than Famke Jannsenn to play Anna Navarre and you've got a cast to die for. Any other casting suggestions welcome.

It'd work better as a trilogy actually. Let me explain. PO

    by scorpio2nd

The first film would take place entirely in New York and deal with the war between UNATCO and the NSF. JCD would be betrayed, see his brother killed in front of him, and return to UNATCO HQ for a final confrontation with Anna Navarre and the slimy Joseph Manderley. The film would end as a bitter JC heads off to Hong Kong aboard Jock's chopper. The second film would detail the whole Hong Kong section before climaxing aboard the supertanker full of gray death. The final film would detail Paris, Gunther's coup de grace, the illuminatti, Vandenberg, the undersea lab, and the final showdown with Bob page at Area 51 (i think the ending where JC becomes an illuminatti member is supposed to be the proper ending). A trilogy is the only way to do the game's fascinating plot justice. I know, i'm a dues ex freak, but proud of it.

The way it seems to me is that there's really no point in making games into movies. Anyone who's seen the cinematics in Warcraft III will probably agree with me that you don't need to make game storyline's into movies when the graphics for the games already look like movies.

    by antibody

First, it boggles my mind that nobody has picked up Half-Life as a possible movie. It has all the makings of a great Summer popcorn flick, this is especially if they cast Gordon Freeman against type, somebody like Jude Law or Jared Leto.

Second, Jimmy Smits as Jock? No way, Rutger Hauer. As far as JC Denton, Van Diesel would be great. A Deus Ex movie would need to trim a lot of the conspiracy stuff. I've played it twice now and still have a hard time following what's going on.

If you're desperate to know exactly what's going on in deus ex, the official solution guide (for the PC anyway) features a section that explains the entire conspiracy in detail and makes for a great read. On another note, i confess i pulled that Jimmy Smitts casting out of my ass (like Lucas' midichlorians theory really). Who would you get to direct the movie/s? Spector wanted Speilberg but what are the odds of that happening? I think Goldeneye director Martin Cambell might do a good job, just off the top of my head.

Wonder if the movie will have anything to do with it. But I'm sure they'll want that magic PG...

    Deus Ex Plotline

    by caliadar

This game has an amazing plotline, and I agree with the person who said that a trilogy would be required to cover it all.

Deus Ex Trilogy: Yes, Half-Life: Yes, MGS: NOOOOOO

    by j_itkowitz

Yep, it'll be challenging to compress Deus Ex's storyline into one film, but it can be done. The trilogy breakdown was dead on, though. Hope Warren Spector is involved throughout the entire process. Awesome game, great experience. Play it on PC if you can (the PS2 version is ok but FPS on consoles are still sketchy.)

As far as Half-Life goes, I'm also surprised this wasn't picked up years ago. It'd make a fantastic action film - it's basically Die Hard set in a top secret military compound. 'Cept you've got murderous government officials and deathsquads instead of terrorists, and oh yeah, those pesky interdimensional creatures. The game hinted at the kinds of alliances we could see in the movie in your dealings with security guards and fellow scientists. All the pieces are there, somebody make this sucker!!!

And then we have Metal Gear Solid 1 and 2. Cool characters, interesting concepts and some of the most god-awful writing and storytelling I have ever borne witness to. I felt that MGS2 was a complete embarrassment, a setback for the advancement of meaningful and mature narrative within the interactive industry. In the hands of a capable (and discerning) screenwriter, perhaps the story Kojima wanted to tell could've come across much better. What gamers got, unfortunately, was indulgent, bloated drivel that you'd laugh at if you saw it on late-night TV. (And never mind the fact that actual gameplay probably lasts about an hour.)

    Anyway, that's my .02.

Maybe John Woo or The Wachowski Bros to direct?

    by peaceman

Yeah so I'm a little late to the party. My bad.
I'm a big fan of this game, and I've been thinking about who I'd want to direct it. I'm throwing out John Woo because he's the man when it comes to gunplay, and this movie would have to have a lot of it. A good Woo movie depends on a good script/story as a base that'll allow him to focus all of his attention on the action. And, as discussed above, this game already has a great story.
As for the Wachowski Brothers, I throw their name out because they've obviously got The Matrix, which has the exact same tone as Deus Ex. It's fairly obvious that the DE's developers were going for a Matrix feel when creating the game. All of the agents wear trenchcoats and shades, the loading screen features the characters posed remarkably like in the Matrix poster. Hell, the training mission starts off in the lobby from the Matrix's end shoot out. The game was modeled after the movie, why not get the directors of said movie to adapt the game?

great game, but poor timing, too derivative

    by duke ray

Duke Ray breaking his code of silence to speak out about this amazing game that would make a horrible movie. //
As fantastic a gaming experience as DX was, there are two BIG arguments for not making it a movie:

    1. The game is blantantly derivative of many other movies and TV series. I mean, a cyber-punk hero wearing a long black coat and sunglasses, whose pun-ish name (JC/The One/Neo) turns out to indicate his savior status...? And the whole conspiracy theory thing has been beaten to death by X-Files -- a lot of it comes straight from that show and movie. There's almost nothing original in the game's elements -- its greatness was in the freedom of gameplay and the complexity of the plot as it threw together all of these used parts. Both these strengths will be NOT tranlate in the non-interactive movie with a necessarily simplified version of the DX plot.
    ////
    2. The one original plot element of DX is that a terrorist group turns out to be *SPOILER BEGINS HERE* actually be a counter-conspiracy group. The evil Gov't conspiracy set it up so that the public would think these freedom fighters blew up the Statue of Liberty. *SPOILER OVER* Post-9/11, such a plotline is in REALLY poor taste, to say the least. It's just irresponsible and will be interpreted by those who haven't played the game as the filmmakers suggesting that Al Quaeda isn't really a terrorist group but was just set up by the Feds as patsys. So, if the filmmakers lose this plotline, they'll have a totally cliche, unoriginal story, and if they keep it, they'll seem irresponsible and tasteless. /// Why doesn't somebody do Half-Life, which is so much more contained and more popular than DX?
    Duke Ray out.

Great fucking game, WAY WAY WAY fucking ahead of it's time and the only reason it didn't fuck everyone's shit up is because it was released within 2 weeks of Half-Life. Anyway, Thief: TDP could be animated and fucking kickass -- it has one of the best plots of any computer game ever made and if the film-maker could transfer 1/10 of the atmosphere of that game into a film it would be fucking hard-rock coolio.

Games that would work as films (if done PERFECTLY)

    by bigted

Metal Gear Solid 1 or 2, Silent Hill 1 or 2 (I'm leaning towards 2), ICO, Deus Ex, Thief 1, System Shock 2, Half-Life, Fallout (but drop some of the bad humour), a proper conversion of FFVII to film (although I did not mind the one that got made) and possibly some other older titles that I just can't remember right now.

That idea for Deus Ex as a trilogy was pretty good, but with the sequel trying to close off a lot of the loose plot points near the end of the game, we might end up seeing 6 of them.

the only reason that Deus Ex get to be one of the best game eva is because it strays away from linear gameplay and narative. it is so free form that you can basically make up your own fate/ story thru out the game. if hollywood wants to keep the game true to it's form then they need a really really good crew to work on it or they should just leave this gem alone. though i kinda think Tom Cruise might be able to play JC DENTON after seeing Minority Report.

    by vorkin

Okay, I don't follow with the mindless obsession with Half-Life that exists. Was it an amazing game? Yes. did it have a great story? No. No, it did not. There was no story. There was a setup, and then there was nothing.

Half-Life as a movie? There was no character interaction in the entire game except for the beginning and end (and the run-ins with the security guards) so how would a movie based on it be so great? There is nothing in Half-Life to make a movie out of.

On the topic of Deus Ex: I think it could work. It could suck, but it has the potential to be great.

    Reply to Talkback

  • If Freeman was on his own for practically the whole movie then it would add to the charcter's desperation and unsettling the audience. It'd make every time he did meet someone a special moment in the movie and if the scientists were made really likable characters then it would make the audience as desparing as Freeman when they meet their horrible demise. It's got a lot of potential.

I played that game a lot.

    by captdanielroe

Yep. I played it a lot and I liked it a lot and the only impediment I see to a movie is making a crummy movie. Forever a danger. I was about to rant that they must be hacks if they can't come up with their own plot and visual style; but heck, all of my favorite films were books, legends, or plays first.
And I work in games and want work in movies...
So have at it; I'll pay ten dollars for that.
Unless it looks like it sucks.
    So watch that please.

    Let's talk directors and actors.

    Director: Alex Proyas.

JC Denton: has to be young. Would like Ed Norton but should be really a young 18-20 year old fresh from Paris Island or wherever. Oh, hell. Edward Norton.

But the big important thing they must do is shoot alternate versions of certain key action scenes. Because this movie absolutely needs a hard R rating. But it needs a PG-13 to sell. And that's fine. Release 'em both and put out a smoking choose-your-own adventure DVD. Because in the game that's how it is. You can be Mr. Nicey nice. Or very much not. I want to see both movies.

One more thing. Make this the Tron sequel, on one level, that we all crave. I don't mean flaky Matrix cyberspace. I don't mean cyberspace at all. A true Tron update will take place in our real world or one not very far in its future. That's Deus Ex.

Oh. And don't wuss out on the conspiracy. Keep it all topical and update it to the current state of the union. Be heroes in that regard. Read Gore Vidal's "Perpetual War for Perpetual Peace."

I'd Better Clarify my Tron Statement

    by captdanielroe

A new Tron movie should be true to the original Tron and have a tailkicking upgrade of it's idea of cyberspace. What I should have said above is: This movie should bring a real, believable, hard-science-based metaphysics to life in a realistic near future. All that bions and beam wepons and holograms and hacking ought, for once please, to look real and not like a Mac user's idea of how computers work. I'd rather see an invisible electron beam slicing dudes up than a big airbrushed-looking Ghostbusters thing. It should look like a photograph documentary of the actual future. Not fanciful like Blade Runner. Of course Alex Proyas could make real location shooting with digital touch ups (Liberty Island) look incredibly surreal, rather like what Aronofsky pulled off in Pi.

Deus-ex was just taking every conspiracy you heard and throwing it in. For the film to work, there has to be some new central concept doesn't there?

If u looking to a Half-life film, forget Freeman...go to Counterstrike.
A roaming group of anarchic terrorists...a counter-terrorism agency hell bent on stopping them. It's got the ready made characters...
The eccentric terrorist who always wears full snow gear in even the dessert scenes. A wise talking Columbian crack dealer. The arab who was always a computer geek in school and is now a playa with the ladies, the hooker hostages, the mad scientists...etc

    Game-Movies and Movie/games

    by sepulchrave

I think Duke's absolutely right about the limiations of the Deux Ex world to be interesting. As a game, it's great, but only because of the game elements: the AI and the great engine, the interactivities. All this goes in a movie, and all your left with is a tired old sci-fi conspiracy thriller starring a sunglassed clone and a bunch of robots. Very Rutger Hauer indeed.
I mentioned this on these boards ages ago, but I heard a rumour on Dark Horizons that somebody had bought up the rights to American McGees Alice for the screen. Now theres a game with visual and narrative potential, a gift for the next Tim Burton or Terry Gilliam. Insanity, tragic death, nighmares, tea parties guilt misery and 'off with her head'. Super.
