Is HEAVENLY CREATURES Going To Be Screwed Up on DVD'!

Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab.

I don’t know what to make of this. Why anyone would release a 2.35:1 film on DVD in anything BUT that aspect ratio in this day and age is a total f’ing mystery to me. Check this nonsense out:

Just thought I'd let you know the region 1 DVD of Peter Jackson's Heavenly Creatures has been officially announced and it is pan and scan (the original aspect ratio is 2.35:1). This is pretty much a giant slap in the face to all of us who love the film. Sound is Dolby Surround 2.0 and there are no extras save for a trailer. I don't mind about the extras or the Dolby Surround, but there's no way I'll buy this thing chopped up. Jackson can't be too cool with it either, provided they've even told him it's going to be released. I taped it in 2.35:1 off of IFC years ago and was looking forward to replacing my worn out tape with a nice new DVD. I've even seen the laserdisc, which has a 2.35:1 transfer of the film on it. Someone needs to call Disney/Miramax on this and fast.

Thanks for the heads-up, Tyler. Let’s hope this is all some horrible miscommunication and we can straighten it out in the days ahead.

"Moriarty" out.

    by radio1_mike

    First.. and That sucks!

  • I've queried both dvdfile.com and thedigitalbits.com about this and they've both been surprisingly mum, which is particularly bizarre in light of just how apeshit thedigitalbits.com went over Willy Wonka being released in pan-and-scam only. Maybe they don't care about Heavenly Creatures that much. We HAVE to voice our disapproval of this travesty now! HC deserves the full-blown special edition DVD treatment, in anamorphic widescreen with loads of bonuses. Like, how about the actual case history of these two girls? Many people would be amazed to learn the Kate Winslet character is, in real life, bestselling mystery writer Anne Perry! Disney, do NOT fuck up this DVD. I mean, duh, you dumbshits, how hard can this be? A movie by the director of LOTR starring the Titanic chick in her screen debut! A retarded orangutan could do this one up right.

    by cheezman20

doesn't make any sense. I would just as soon do what harry's doing to his eye in the corner than subject myself to a pan and scan version of heavenly creatures. I'll hunt down the laserdisc if I have to.

Over at mhvf.net, Vincent from viewaskew claims to have it on good authority that a HEAVENLY CREATURES special edition will be released once Peter Jackson has time to work on it.

    by Wee Willie

Has anyone noticed that The Mulholland Drive DVD has no scene selections. You can't even jump from scene to scene within the film. if you push the button to jump forward, you wind up at the end of the film. What gives?

    Lynch

    by DrJubal

David Lynch does't like chapters - he feels that the movie is entirely one story and to break it up goes against his vision. Hence - no chapter breaks.

They used to make cutting edge stuff. Ack!!! They are actually bullying web, DVD sellers who sell Hong Kong DVDs like "Legend of ZU" and "Shaolin Soccer." I say boycott Miramax until they stand up to Disney and get back some integrity. I haven't sat through a Miramax movie in a few years. I hate them so much.

    Frank, hold off on Solaris...

    by Vegas

Criterion is working on a special edition of SOLARIS as we speak, due to be released in conjunction with the remake. Also, the reason you may not find many extras on ANY Heavenly Creatures disc is that Peter Jackson has expressed remorse about ruining the anonymity these two women had been living in before the release of the film.

    by Frank Black

http://www.lfvw.com/news.htm Here is another one, but I haven't ordered from them, but they sure have an awesome selection. I am actually working on a web site which will be devoted to reviewing the best places to get hard to find DVDs and reviewing the DVDs from all over the world. My digital video production company and production report will be linked to it, as well as a lot of entertainment stuff and a digital video collaborative that will attempt to bring people together from all over the world to work on digital video projects from afar. Hollywood sucks, but we don't have to watch the crap they put out! Shameless plug. Stay tuned!

Who cares about Heavenly Creatures anyways?!

    by Rated-R

People want to act like Heavenly Creatures and Dead Alive were Peter Jackson's Masterpieces before LotR but lets be honest, they were totally overated bi-movies. There's only one film and DVD I'm interested in from Peter Jackson and that is.............. Frightners! jk! Lord Of The Rings. You know it to be true, that's why we geeks are all here and not some teenage lesbo killer flick. Although I do like LESBOS!

    People with taste, that's who

    by exit272

Just a response to the previous nimrod. Anyway, I suppose folks can be forgiven for fraking out a bit. A studio releasing a high-profile movie in pan-&-scam only is not outside the realm of reality. There has been a disturbing tendency on the part of sudios to go pan-&-scam on DVD's to satisfy the uneducated Joe Sixpack crowd who don't understand what them black bars is doin' there. They'll sure feel like a bunch of chumps in about 10 years time when 16x9 televisions are all the norm and they're saying, "hey, howcum there's black bars on the SIDES of my "full frame" DVD?" Duh. Come on, Hollywood, educate consumers about widescreen. The feature on the recent Die Hard SE was a good start, now let's have some follow-through.

    David Lynch

    by Elwood Blues

Though it was posted way up there... I had to display my annoyed reaction to Muhalland Drive having no chapter selections. I rented it, and it had scratchs and skipped, so I couldn't just jump ahead to the next chapter and rewind a bit, I had to go to the end of the film each time, and go through two hours, hour and a half of film I haven't seen. Pissed me off. Lynch, you can be eccentric all you want, but jeez, no chapter breaks? Kinda ruined my experience for the film. Use a little logic and reason when it comes to practicality.

    canadian dvd

    by AshFett

Heavenly Creatures has been on DVD in Canada for quite awhile. I've seen it often in stores here in LA, but THAT version is indeed pan and scan. Perhaps that is why there is this (hopefully false) news that it'll be released pan and scan here in the US?

    'Rated-Retarded'

    by Baker's Dozen

I'm not sure if he/she's just trying to get a "rise" out of people by saying that the only PJ movie to care about is LOTR. But long before the little hobbits made their way into production and on to geek history, 'Heavenly Creatures' and another PJ masterpiece, 'Forgotten Silver' were, and still are, two of my favorite films. So a big finger to you. Good to hear that it is coming out widescreen after all too. Now all we need is Miramax to wake up and realize they still have 'Flirting with Disaster' and 'Delicatessen' sitting around without decent DVDs to speak of.

    uncut or weinstein version?

    by jeffallee

The real question is if this is going to be the original uncut 1 hour and 50 minute version or the 1 hour and 40 minute version that was butchered by harry "scissorhands" weinstein when he bought the rights to it for miramax. The original cut has not been seen outside of new zealand.

  • July 20, 2002, 2 a.m. CST

    directors cut

    by jeffallee

I have never heard jackson say anything about the butchered version of the film and I can't imagine that it would be any trouble to release the original cut. I have seen the 1 hour and 50 minute version and it is a much better film. None of the cuts weinstein made make any sense. It is just another pathetic example of harvey weinstein trying to be "creative" by butchering somebody else's work. I am glad he didn't get a chance to be "creative" with lord of the rings. You know he wanted to butcher all three books in to one two hour movie.

    by Son Of Batboy

There was a mistake with Buena Vista's press site. All it took was a simple phone call to follow-up and resolve this error. So I could use this "follow-up" to see whether I've been fed a steamin' pile of horse manure? In a sense yes, and you can do it by pressing these little buttons right here. Why I'll be a son of a gun, they must be some sorta magic buttons!!! Um, not exactly, but you'll find that by asking around you can usually get answers to all sorts of questions. Well, hot diggity damn that there is one smart feller!!!

    Ah, relief

    by wasp

I'm glad to hear that Heavenly Creatures will see a widescreen release on DVD, for it is one that I pine for. Pan and scan should be outlawed or something. I rented The Professional on VHS once (let's just say that I had no choice about the format due to my lame community), and the pan and scan was an utter atrocity. I'm pretty sure the film would have looked great if I had watched it on DVD like I wanted to. Anyways, Heavenly Creatures is a fantastic film. Normally, a movie about two flighty and melodramatic adolescent girls falling in love would make me gag, but throw in matricide and Peter Jackson and you have one of the most entertaining and provocative high dramas of the last ten years.

Wide screen teles are stupid. You can get normal teles that have a 16:9 mode. the only reason to have a wide scren over than is you do'nt like black boarders that you'll get any way on some DVD's. I'll never ever buy a wide screen tele unless their isn't another option.

    by St.Buggering

Even back in the laserdisc days, the only widescreen edition I ever saw was a Japanese import. Why is that AMC can show a letterboxed edition of "The Four Musketeers", but nobody can seem to get it together for a widescreen video release of both films? Is it some kind of distribution rights issue? I know this has nothing to do with "Heavenly Creatures", except that it's another case of an excellent film getting the screw, as so many others have. But hey, you can get a Criterion edition of "Armageddon"! The world is a toilet.

I'll most likely alienate everyone here, but...

    by Almost Sexy

I really really dislike widescreen. I got the Insider on widescreen and that didn't bother me too much, but then I bought the Royal Tenenbaums DVD for my girlfriend (I don't have a DVD player, she does, so maybe I was buying it for both of us). She has a 19" tv that sits up in the corner of her room. I go to sit down, we start watching the movie, and the actual screen (at least the part that's not black) is alarmingly small. I love that movie, but I sure couldn't see the character's faces that well. Maybe it's better if you have a really really big television...Maybe it's just conditioning, but it's very very hard for me to watch a movie where about two-fifths of the screen is blacked out. Maybe I'm an unwashed film moron, but it sure doesn't enhance my film-going experience (meaning the widescreen format). Comments??

    Almost Sexy

    by Black Jesus

widscreen is the way the movie was originally filmed, it's the way you see it in the theater. normal tv's aren't the same aspect ratio of theater screens, therefore when a movie is converted to fullscreen you are losing the sides of the picture. with widescreen you see the film in it's original form.
