Guess Who's Coming To DEAD ZONE!!

Published at:  Jul 13, 2002 11:55:07 PM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

Fans of the “Dead Zone” novel and movie have been wondering, “Where’s Stillson?” Greg Stillson, an evil politician, was the chief antagonist of the latter part of the book, and was also mentioned in passing during the “Dead Zone” series pilot.

We’ve just learned that Stillson is slated to finally turn up in the series’ 13th episode, titled “Destiny.”

In the book and movie, psychic Johnny Smith learns that Stillson will in the future amass great political power, and bring horror to the planet in ways Hitler never considered.

The episode will look, via flashback, into Stillson’s long and sordid history. We’ll see him sell bibles to farm folk, then fornicate with their underage daughter, Sonny Corleone-style. We’ll see him as a mayor running for re-election, threatening a political enemy by having a henchmen dangle that enemy out a fifth-story window. We’ll see him six years later, as he takes office as state senator. And we’ll see him in the present, shagging one of the locals before a big photo op.

Are people watching? From the July 2 edition of Variety:

"Dead Zone," which USA runs Sunday at 10, has all the earmarks of a runaway hit. It premiered three weeks ago to a 4.8 rating, the best premiere number for a dramatic series in the history of basic cable.

The series slipped to a still gaudy 3.4 rating a week later. But on June 30, "Dead Zone" shot up to a 4.0 rating, 18% above the previous week and the No.-1-rated show in all of basic cable for the full week of June 24-30. It was also the highest-rated show among adults 25-54 for the week.

The fifth new episode of “The Dead Zone” airs Sunday at 10 p.m. on USA.

I am – Hercules!!

    Where's the review for Monk?

    by holidill

Monk with Tony Shalhoub premiered on USA network on Friday July 12. I watched the two hour pilot and though it was great. The show was fun and exciting and Tony Shalhoub was awesome as a Sherlock Holmes/Columbo type who suffers from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Check it out.

    The Breakfast Zone

    by nihilon

I still think this show would be better if Molly Ringwald played Johnny's ex-girlfriend, Emilio Estevez played her new jock cop husband, and Judd Nelson played Stillson. Oh well, who knows, maybe Walken will play Stillson? They've got to get Walken on this show somehow. It's been pretty good, except for that lame flashback/love story episode last week.

    Monk

    by nihilon

I also thought Monk was funny, but how long do you think it will be before some OCD special interest group starts bitching and whining about how the show portrays the disorder for laughs? not long i'll bet.

    Stillson returns, but...

    by pyleanjosswhedon

...I suppose there's no chance Martin Sheen could reprise the role, if it's going to be recurring. It would be a really funny play on his current image. Oh, well. How about Charlie Sheen? He sounds perfect for the part.

This is not the first Dead Zone post!

    by hercules

Type "Zone" into the keyword search and discover AICN not only posted on Dead Zone five weeks ago, AICN has been posting on Dead Zone since Anthony Michael Hall was cast. Try to keep up.

THE CASTLE ROCK STRANGLER IS GREG STILLSON!

    by johnny smith

What about Nicholas Campbell, the original Frank Dodd, as the crazy guy who insists "I'm not crazy"? And if we wanna get cute, why not Simon Craig as Sonny Elliman?

    Charlie Sheen as Greg Stillson!

    by thevision

Let's set aside the hookers and drugs and remember Charlie Sheen is a damn good actor. Platoon and Wall Street, anybody remember?
Since Spin City is history, I hope the producers cast Charlie Sheen as Greg Stillson. Charlie has got the acting chops to pull it off and it would be a great homage to his dad Martin. Remember Daddy Sheen's chilling performance as psychotic bullshit artist turned senatorial candidate Stillson?..."I have a destiny, I'm going to be President of the United States one day and no one... and I MEAN NO ONE IS GOING TO STOP ME!!" Or in Walken's future vision of a Mirror Mirror version of Josiah Bartlett..."General, put your goddamn hand on that authenticator or I'LL CHOP IT OFF AND PUT IT ON FOR YOU!" And last but not least..."Mr. Vice President, Mr Secretary, the missles are flying...hallalujah!" I think Charlie would do his old man proud!!

Gonna have to read the book now

    by burningbabyfish

Though hopefully that won't kill the show for me. I was thinking Christopher Walken, as well, as people went bonkers about his role in other topics.
My requests for talkbacks: Witchblade and Monk. Both rock.

    Monk pilot was GREAT

    by neovsmatrix

Dead Zone's pretty good. I agree last week's episode was lame, but I liked this week's episode although it was pretty much a ripoff of the movie 12 angry men. I loved the book, but I've never seen the movie.

What? No new Buffy news to report this weekend?

    by johnny dagger

I cherish this talkback, as it's devoted to something OTHER than Buffy. I reiterate the points of some of my fellow talkbackers - Monk rocks, Witchblade rocks, Dead Zone is pretty damn good considering how it could have turned out. I wanna see Walken make some sort of a cameo.

If you read the newspaper articles on the Dead Zone website, the murder victim was none other than Noonian Soong. He should have known better than to time travel back to our present.

    Dead Zone

    by delwin

I think its about time Hall has really made a comeback. I know he played Gates and all, but I think this is really showing his talent. Especially with the fklashbacks or flashfowards when he steps into a person's shoes. He's doing so many differnet characters. I love the show. A Walken cameo would be a great idea. Lats night's ep. did remind me of 12 Angry Men, but maybe close to a Ep. I saw of Charmed. Anyways, great show, and I hope it lasts.

    Emilio

    by zer0cool2k2

Emilio always reminded me of his dad a lot more than Charlie. And Papa sheen was perfectly cast as Stillson in the movie. I still get a chill & a chuckle at how most of TV-watching America thinks Bartlett is the greatest pesident ever, yet I know he's eventually trigger Armageddon. Actually I'd like to see Hall reteamed with his "Johnny Be Good" castmate, robert Downey Jr. as Stillson. I was kinda' bummed at first by the way they chose a new explanation for the term "dead zone" in the first ep. (as opposed to the book's use of the term). But I like the way Johnny's always wearing a jacket with a turned-up collar, ala Walken. And next week's ep looks SWEET!

    Sean Patrick Flannery?!

    by christopher3

The guy's going to have to work overtime to find his inner meanie. I personally think they should have gotten Cary Elwes or that hulking guy who played Knowle Rohrer on "X-Files." They both look like slimy, charismatic bastards.

I'd PREFER it not last more than 2-3 years.

    by christopher3

They'll run out of standalone material eventually. I'd rather that this excellent show stick closely to the book's mythology and not veer into "X-Files" or "Millenium"-esque how-the-hell-did-we-get-this-far-and-what-will-we-do-for-an-encore territory. Yeah, I know how it ends. You know how it ends. That doesn't dampen the thrill of seeing it brought to life. John Smith is a man on a mission. The only variable for this series, really, is how long it takes him to find it.
