Wanna See MR. SHOW Live'! Wanna Know Where And When'!

Published at:  Jul 11, 2002 6:28:46 AM CDT

Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab.

I was lucky enough to attend several tapings of MR. SHOW in LA when it was still being produced for HBO. They used to run ads in the back of the LA WEEKLY to tell you when the shows were being taped, and you could just call and RSVP and go to see them. It was always more fun to see Bob and David and their great rotating cast of supporting players work live. I know that when I finally saw The Kids In The Hall live about six years ago, it was so much better than seeing them on TV. For anyone who didn’t get to see Mr. Show tape, you’re going to get a chance to see them anyway, and it sounds like you’re in for a treat if you do.

David Cross called me today and asked me if I’d run a list of dates they’re appearing. If they do well in these cities, who knows what might happen? They sound like they’d be willing to add second shows. I think Bob and David are anxious to get in front of an audience and enjoy performing and stop thinking about the bullshit involved in the RUN RONNIE RUN release (or the lack thereof) and just enjoy being MR. SHOW again.

Or at least, that’s the impression I got before David told me, “No, dude, it’s mainly for some quick, easy money.” But let’s pretend he never said that, okay?

Hope I see you guys there.

"Moriarty" out.

I hate the coasts. And the big fancy-schmancy mid-west cities.

    by rampagingtroll

So, what are we poor people that are not near any of these dates that can't afford plane tickets and hotel supposed to do? Grrrr. I hate living in the mid-south. Nothing cool ever happens near here. Not even within reasonable driving distance. Bastards, all of you within proximity!

    Mr. Mixed

    by speed

I will probably cop it for this but i find Mr. show to be mixed. somewhat clever in concept and ideas but no so good in delivery(from what i have seen). I am not american but I do enjoy good comedy from anywhere(acutally only america and england) so i recently picked up the Mr. show DVD. mmm...I didn't really laugh to be honest. It was interesting but not so funny. that's cool, but I think it could have been really funny. For me the pacing and the timing of gags wasn't what it should have been. Plus I also got The League of Gentlemen at the same time. very different types of comedy for sure, but watching both at the same time you can't help but to compare. And it's not a not being american thing as my room mate is American(yes, he can speak for all of you) and he usually doesn't get into british comedy but he loved TLoG. It did feel in a strange way a little british, but I just couldn't stop thinking of Fry and Laurie. Which is also unfortunate. I just think that when it comes to absurdist humo(u)r the brits do it the best. to be honest i think these guys should be making movies. The run ronnie run movie does sound pretty cool. But from the sounds of it we will never get to see it. pity. ps. i'm not british either or canadian...thank god.

    Electric Factory in Philly!?!?!?!?

    by renonevada2000

SHIT!!! That's a lousy venue for a comedy show. There's no seating (Except for very minimal amounts in the bar balcony) and the stage is raised so high that if you try to get close enough to see you're going to wind up spraining your neck. It's a great hall for rock concerts (I saw barenaked Ladies and Bowie twice there) but I seriously doubt how good a venue for this. Maybe I'll just drive into NYC the next night instead...

    by killgore

Although its run was brief, Mr. Show is second only The State. Kids in the Hall and Monty Python are fine shows, but I seldom find myself laughing into a hysterical frenzy at them. CHICKEN SANDWICH KARL!!!!

    No Austin show?

    by mrpickles

That sucks. David Cross and Tenacious D both played to packed venues here in the last year. There can't be more Mr. Showheads in Madison and Ann Arbor than in Austin. I'm calling my congressman.

Why don't I think these guys are funny?

    by qualopec

I like Monty Python, and The State on MTV was cool, Kids in the Hall was OK, but somehow Mr. Show rarely makes me laugh. I never watched it on HBO, but got the DVD expecting it to be great. To be fair, a lot of the humor might have been funnier when the shows aired; jokes about Montana militias seem quaint in the age of Al Quaeda. But a lot of it seems just...self-indulgent. There are good jokes and even good sketches here and there, but generally, they're just not that funny. My favorite parts: Trying to sneak the shampoo bottle through customs; the infomercial about the quiet cooking pan; and the line "All these goats are retarded." Other than that, most of the material left me unimpressed. The show about how white people copy black culture started with a good premise and ran it into the ground. And there are so many jokes and sketches about being gay that after a while they just lose their impact; it's like, "oh, another gay joke." And the way they cut from sketch to sketch is sometimes clever, but more often distracts from the impact of each sketch rather than enhancing it. Does anyone else agree with me?

    The World is Changing.

    by wee willie

Mike Ovitz hammered the final nail in his own coffin with his "gay mafia" comments. Once the most powerful man in Hollywood, Ovitz has proven himself to be just another stupid rich asshole. Michael Jackson is bear-baiting his own record company in a move that will only spell doom for this former African American hoofer. George W. Bush is wagging his finger at Big Business for unfair business practices at the same time as stories of his won unfair business dealing are circulating. Among the other insanities in thsi fast-shifting cultural landscape, the cocksuckers from Enron have not yet gone to jail. In a veritable funhouse of societal madness, where the very rich, so used to hiding their bullshit from the public view, are going blind in the light of the Information flashlight, thank God for one thing: Bob and Dvaid. (is Dvaid the bald one? Or the one that looks like a rat in a business suit?)

    by bjtew

Youd think with all the charachters based on "southern" stereotypes (senator tinkerbell, ronnie dobbs) we would actually get a show somewhere near the south. No, DC doesnt count!

    by auntiemeat

And be properly worshipped by the adoring masses here. That D show last year was the fucking shiznit, no question. They deemed the town to be "Daustin" from then on. And I'm proud to be a freakin' citizen. Wanted to go to the Cross show, but alas, no cash when tickets were available, then no tickets available when I got cash. :( Some rat bastard friends of mine got to go though. I hate you all, and you know who you are. ;) Come to Austin! We're the loophole in the Bible Belt, I swear! It's not a Jesus college! Be not afraid, Bob and David! Come. We'll love you guys up good and proper.

    by mtoast

I bow to no one in my love of this show. But I don't think Bob and David really hit their stride until late in the second season. I'm really hoping that the strong sales of the first set will get the HBO braintrust to pony up for a complete third and fourth season set. But, for now, take another look at the last two season two shows on the DVD and the "Best of" which covers season three. If you don't find brilliance there, then this is not the comedy for you.

"Kid -- you got the goods!"

    That is all.

I was all pumped after seeing a Philly date, but after reading your post I'm thinking twice. Never been to TLF, but it doesn't sound like a great venue. As for the fellow from the mid-south, I have good avice for you: Move.

    God's America

    by hoover

Mr. Show was one of those rare entities that rose above the vast wasteland of American culture to produce something that was actually funny and a wee bit challenging. The first time I watched it, I didn't laugh that much. Yet, after the next episode, I was a pathetic addict. Like all things with substance, it isn't immediately accessible, so there is no surprise at all towards the negative comments directed at ol' Bob and Dave. Let the Adam Sandler brigade reign supreme. Your brains aren't wired for this particular brand of humor and, truthfully, I'm relieved.

I certainly didn't mean to discourge any local Philly types from seeing them at the Electric Factory. Since I live up near the Poconos and am equi-distant from Philly and NYC, the NYC venue is the better of my two choices. If I were going to book the show in Philly, I would have put it in either the Theatre of the Living Arts or the Prince Music Theatre. Electric Factory holds more people though. I can see why the promoters would want to care about ticket sale volume versus presenting a show that everyone can actually see... :p

    Hmmm...Chicago? Ann Arbor? Minnesota?

    by sod off baldric

Which one do I hit first? God damn...this better be legit. You just never know with Mr. Show. I'm still skeptical about the existence of Run Ronnie Run. Don't get me wrong...if the movie is real and does get released I'm there with bells on. It's just that you never know when the jokes begin or end with Bob and David. Mr. Show is kinda like a post-modern version of the antics of Andy Kaufman. Please, whoever is in charge, let this be for real. (gives the Universe puppy dog eyes and pouty lip look)

Holy shit I can't believe they're actually coming to Vancouver! As soon as I saw the title for the show, my heart sank. But I decided to check out the list anyways. Lo and behold, one Canadian date, and it's Vancouver!! Usually when there's only one Canadian date of something I want to see, it's Toronto. YES!!! I'm so giddy right now. I'm going to go watch the DVD now. YES!!!!!
