Whedon Pens New BUFFY!!

Published at: July 4, 2002, 5:36 p.m. CST

I am – Hercules!!

“Buffy the Vampire Slayer” mastermind Joss Whedon will pen the first episode of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s” seventh season, according to respectable if untested new Coaxial sources.

Whedon, who usually directs the “Buffy” episodes he writes, apparently will not direct the bulk of 7.1 – though he may ghost-direct the scenes being shot in England with series vets Anthony Stewart Head and Alyson Hannigan.

Having written what many agree to be the series’ most beloved installments – including “Hush,” “Restless,” “The Body,” “The Gift,” “Anne,” “Dopplegangland,” “Becoming,” “Graduation Day,” and “Family” – Whedon has not been credited with a “Buffy” teleplay since last November’s musical episode “Once More With Feeling.”

Whedon has been credited with fewer and fewer “Buffy” teleplays as the series has continued. “Once More” was the only Whedon-written episode to air during the series’ 22-episode sixth season. He scripted three hours for season five, four for season four, five for season three, and six for season two. For “Buffy’s” abbreviated first season, Whedon wrote a full third of its 12 hours.

The news also portends the return to an old “Buffy” tradition. Whedon wrote the “Buffy” season openers for the series’ first, second, third and fourth years. (Veteran series scribe Marti Noxon, who has served as “Buffy” showrunner since it moved from the WB to UPN a year ago, was credited with opening-hour teleplays for the show’s fifth and sixth seasons.)

The seventh-season opener is said to center in large part around a rebuilt Sunnydale High School, which was destroyed when its student body combatted a gargantuan snake-demon during Buffy’s graduation ceremony three years ago. Buffy’s sister Dawn will begin attending classes at the school this autumn, while Buffy herself is said to take a job at the facility.

News of Whedon scripting 7.1 was corroborated Thursday morning by a post at the infamous Cross & Stake site, though that post may soon be deleted. “Michelle,” who runs the site under the moniker “AngelX,” has indicated in recent weeks that lawyers for 20th Century Fox, which produces “Buffy,” have for some reason threatened legal action if “Buffy” spoilers appear there.

    Legal Action?

    by aubin

I doubt Fox has legs to stand on regarding legal action. It falls under the same legal protection that allows for unnamed sources, and for well, just breaking news. Make it clear, that if Fox attacks this site, they are doing it to scare people, not because they have any legal right to do it. If the site wanted to fight back, they could realistically do it, and win. There is a main precedent they could use, which is specifically part of California law, which says that: ... Code of Civil Procedure

    by DarkAngelCher

That Buffy site shouldn't be scared of Joss and his legal team. What can they do? Shut down the site. So what. Start a new site somewhere else. Or is this just an excuse of a spoiler drought?

    A couple of points

    by Novelty

    1) These aren't Mutant Enemy lawyers coming down on AngelX. They're Fox lawyers. There's a difference. 2) Even though I agree that there's probably no legal basis to shut down the site, I don't fault the webmistress for not wanting to spend time and money fighting over it. For now, the spoiler board's still up, and there's little they can do to go after that unless they want to go after every site on the net. 3) Joss writing the season opener? I'm there.

    Too many buffy posts

    by AshFett

Herc, I gotta agree witha lot of people and say STOP with the non-stop Buffy stories... the ones like these that are tiny bits of news don't need full posts. Buffy is my favorite show of ALL TIME. I have never loved a tv show this much. I think it's wonderful and Joss Whedon is brilliant. But still, there are times when something is worth a story and times when it's not, and this is getting a little out of hand. And I hate to say it, but the news that Joss was writing the season premiere of Buffy has been out for a couple of months now (and rumor has it he's writing the sixth or so Angel of the season too btw).

  • July 4, 2002, 8:24 p.m. CST

Who reported Joss writing the season premiere before today?

    by Hercules

Because I'd like to read it. BTW, you are NOT compelled by federal law to read everything we post at Coax, but you are welcome to complain about it in talkback. Harry pays me three times as much for each talkback as he does for each hit!

    Hit of what Herc?

    by Zap Kapow

The pipe?... say it aint so! I'm hoping Joss get's the season off to a flying start. The first ever episode got the series of to a flyer (I thought) and this is Buffy: Yr 1, so here's hoping!

I was all set to rant at people for the silly posts against Herc posting more Buffy news (cuz they can always just NOT CLICK on the link. You know, like I do when I am not interested in a topic.) But since it puts more money in Herc's pocket, I'm not. Post on fools. **** On the topic of FS TBs, sounds like that is money in the bank for ya Herc. And I think you wouldn't have to even write an article. Just provide the forum. AD out

    by TheMatarife

Look at what they did to X-Files fansites. Fox is notorious for nailing their own fanbase with their crazy rabid ankle chewing legal department. I'm surprised after some of the stuff that AICN has posted they haven't gotten nasty letters.

    Buffy will be...

    by crash_davis

the librarian. That's my prediction. It makes perfect thematic sense and provides amazing overarching thematic potential, with Dawn being 'trained' for life by Buffy. Of course, she never was much with books, so who knows. Will the Buffster become affiliated with the Watchers? Will Dawn become more a part of the Scoobs? Only time will tell, and I can't wait.

    More buffy

    by AshFett

So here I post again in a thread I'm bitching about, but alas, why not? Anyhoo, if these rumors/speculation about Buffy going to work at Sunnydale High are true, I hope they can do it in a way that doesn't feel forced, cheesy and too easy. I mean, at the Buffy presentation at the TV Academy a couple weeks back, when Joss mentioned that Sunnydale High was reopening this season, Nick Brendon jumped in with, "And I'm going to go back to work there as Mr. Beldings assistant!" Funny comment Nick, but it points out how cheesy it COULD be for Buffy to easily get a job working at the school. But if anyone can pull it off the right way, it's Joss. Herc: I honestly dont remember where I first read about Joss writing next seasons premiere, but it was very soon after this seaons finale... it wasn't Wanda on E I dont think... damn, I'm blanking.

    buffy - destiny

    by thebuffster

i think in the 7th season buffy should be cursed and get pregnent and have her think about not telling the scoobies and put it up for adoption, but decides not to. she has a girl, and names it destiny, then spike offers to help pay for it. faith breaks out of prison and heads straight for buffy, planning on either telling her shes been in love with her since theyve met and has been thinking about her every minute of the day or killing her. she finds buffy with her baby in her arms and spike at her side, the mad, angry and flustered face quickly changed to an awww shes so cute kind of face. buffy puts destiny down and asks faith what she was doing here, face ignores her and asks whos the baby belong to. when buffy says its hers faith starts to cry, not letting buffy notice at any chance, and runs out. you can think of what happens next cuz im tired of typing! i might as well write a finfic

I'm not primarily critizicing Herc for his extended Buffy coverage; I love Buffy and I like Buffy talkbacks. Also, I don't mind putting money in his pocket (as long as it doesn't come out of mine): All I'm saying is give us more Farscape. Why FOX lawyers don't mess with AICN

    by ArchDiver

Because they can't find the site. They probably just perform websearches with simple keywords like 'buffy' and 'spoiler' and then just go after the first couple of major sites that pop up with titles that are blatantly obvious. That's if they do that much work. I imagine a lot of this stuff needs to be brought to their attention, and none of us would sell AICN out, would we? AD out

    What FOX Is Up To

    by Mr. Smegma

Of course FX is threatening fan sites. Access is the coin of the realm for network pub departments -- dangle an "exclusive" in front of some outlet and blammo, you get coverage. But, paradoxically, where there is a active fanbase for a show, they don't need "exclusives," they create their own. That depletes the value of FOX's own PR department, they don't have anything to offer anyone, hence FOX thinks their property has been devalued. They would really truly prefer to reach X minus 1000 people with their own PR than have outside efforts reach x PLUS 1000. It is all about control and ANYTHING that diminshes it must be squashed. ===== As for Dawnie as a cheerleader, we've already seen her lithe body in motion for "Once More," a quantum improvement over SMG's thick, Semitic undercarriage. But could the show maintain its balance with Dawnie as a hottie? I doubt Joss will ever allow it.

    Buffy's job at Sunnydale High

    by magic_ninja

Buffy's not really librarian material. She's just not smart enough. I see her more as the quasi-dyke Pys Ed teacher. And I really hope Willow goes back to being realistic computer nerd rather than reverting to her cartoonish "all of a sudden I'm a lesbian for no reason!" wiccan character.

Personally, I think Farscape is so gay...

    by Rick McCallum

...But the Farscapers complaining about the lack of Coaxial coverage have a point. I love Buffy but there's not point in reading all this non-news about it, especially when there are lots of other geek-worthy shows to report on. I could care less about Farscape but wouldn't mind seeing reporting on Coaxial for it. With that out of the way, I just don't get Farscape. Every episode looks badly filmed, filled with puppets and characters piled under several layers of make-up (Hello, Return of the Jedi!), with scripts that are utterly confounding. (Hey, I like alternative stuff, too, but the storytelling in Farscape is such a surrealistic mess.) OK, maybe I like Buffy even when it's bad because of the utter fuckability of pretty much the entire female cast. (Although, I wouldn't be surprised if next season Marti uglies up the female cast.) So what's the main demographic who watches Farscape? Girl geeks? Furverts and alien sexual fetishists? Weird guys into beastiality? I'm asking this somewhat seriously. At least with a bad episode of Buffy, you can whack off to it.

    by kobayashi

...as SilverAgent just mentioned Miss Gellars weight. Has she, in fact, become thinner in seasons 5-6? I was watching the new season 2 DVDs and she looked about the same back then. Maybe they just have been shooting her differently... she is really a tiny girl (height wise too), most of the time things are set up so that we don't notice it though. (Same thing with Michael J. Fox and Tom Cruise, by the way...)

    Dawn

    by DawnsHott

I just want everyone to know that Dawn is extremly hot in leather pants as is Buffy. I just had an awesome jack-off session watching the scene from Who Are You when SMG climbs on the bed in those tight leather pants and you see her beautiful ass. If I was Riley I wouldve fucked her untill i blew my load everywhere on her hot body. I just wanna hump that girl in that scene. I have a boner thinking about it so im gunna go jerk-off to that scene again. All you guys agree with me on that scene?

I'm pretty sure most blokes would agree with you on your preception of the Summers women in leather. I'm just not sure they'd admit to 'jerkin off' right after they'd seen it or wantin to stain the leather and her pubes (spelling?) with their cum. Did anyone see Harry Knowles interveiwed on that BBC program 'The Hollywood Machine'. I had no idea he was so feared by movie producers and that he gets treated with such respect i.e. travelling first class (payed for) to see pre released films - in hopes that he'd give a good review. Harry rocks.

    Beholding Benson

    by OuiMai

DarkHawke, your (and everyone's) comments just go to show that beauty is subjective. I'm constantly amazed at how many posters use "hot" to describe Dawn - she's cute in a bow-ties girlish way, but NOT hot (to me). She may grow into a great beauty, but she's not there yet. On the other hand, Benson IS beautiful - and IS voluptuous (to me anyway). The requirements of the show made her character sort of frumpy, and even putting the character aside, Benson may not be a "classical" beauty - but she had a certain sexy something when she chose to use it. Her eyes drew me in as far as Aly's Willow. Anyway, to me, her face and figure are far more interesting and sensual than a "classical" beauty ever could be. I will miss her (can't you tell?). I agree with you about SMG and Hannigan.

    SMG's Thick Undercarriage Explained

    by Mr. Smegma

I can see I erred in assuming that as the topic was Dawn as a cheerleader everyone would know the comparison was to the SMG of season 1, where her residual baby-fat that made her so delicious elsewhere SEEMED to make her legs and hips a little doughy. Overall, I PREFER that Buffy to the stick-figure version by a wide margin. SMG simply got bad body-imaging/sculping advice. Also, note that we are talking very fine gradations here, shades sort of perfection. CC's Cordy -- who made for a resplendent cheer-temptress -- nonetheless has flesh pillows the ride just a tad low. Not the surgery is in order or that anything is "wrong," indeed, it these little details that make the female form in all it guises -- marshmallowy, cafe au lait, taut and engourged, Semitic, Druidic, soft and wet, fiery red bushed, silky raven framed -- so endlessly fascinating.

    Librarians require a MASTER'S DEGREE!!!!

    by PissedLibrarian

Okay, all of these suggestions that Buffy will be the school librarian next season are driving me nuts. Doesn't anyone know that the position of Librarian requires the holder to have a Master's Degree (not even just a four-year college degree, but a six-year one) in Library and Information Science? A school Librarian, furthermore, would have to have both an educational degree and the Master's. Since Buffy dropped out of college after one year, there is no way she would be qualified to hold that position in a public school - that would be like making her a lawyer or a college professor next season. While many misinformed people think a Librarian just shelves books and checks them out, we actually have to be able to catalog by the extremely complex and technical AACR2 cataloging and classification rules, run entire divisions, deal with vendors, write technical reports, handle acquisitions, educate students, wrtie up an maintain budgets and make ethical decisions concerning use of the collection. LIBRARIANS RULE!! And if Joss is so misinformed as to make a college dropout a school librarian, then he has lost a whole lot of credibility in my book.

So glad you ranted! As a fellow librarian and Buffy fan, I was also getting pissed off at the talk of Buffy being the new librarian. I had to get a masters degree folks. By the way, someone complained about Willow being 'all of a sudden a lesbian for no reason'. Well it can happen. My roomate and best friend for 10 years was as straight as I am. We went to highschool together, I knew her very well. She wore makeup, loved lingerie, had many boyfriends, and then one day met a lesbian, fell in love and has been gay ever since. They are still living together and happy 7 years later. You just never know.

    1st ep story line

    by JJ95142

Story line: Buffy's worried when Dawn starts HS in the new school built on the site of the old one. When Dawn almost immediately starts seeing dead people, she finds that she's not alone - not only is Buffy fighting on her behalf, but two new friends, Kit Holbern and Carlos Trejos, wind up fighting the demons as well. Also, the new principal Robin Wood seems to be looking out for them as well - but only time will tell if this is a good thing or a bad thing... 'Principal Wood' - A hot, well dressed African American man, 30 years old, he is the new principal for the newly-rebuilt Sunnyvale High School. He seems committed, compassionate and on top of things; he is aware of Buffy's "checkered past" and also has apparently read up on some of his other students, like Kit and Carlos. When Principal Wood successfully gets Buffy's commitment to work at the school as part of their outreach program, he behaves just like any devoted public school educator who's just gotten a new parent recruit...RECURRING (7) 'Kit' - Legal 18, emancipated or G.E.D., to play 15. A Goth girl who looks like trouble, she's discovered by Dawn in the bathroom sobbing after having seen some dead people. Creeped out but still functional, she's happy to find that Dawn believes her, but soon becomes terrified for her life when both girls crash through the floor to the basement. Kit joins Dawn and Carlos in their fight for their lives against the angry, resentful dead people, and it's clear that the three of them are going to be good friends...PROBABLE RECURRING (15) 'Carlos' - Legal 18, emancipated or G.E.D., to play 15. This big high school thug appears menacing at first when he runs into Buffy, but later he's scared to death when he winds up in the basement with Dawn and Kit and a bunch of gross and malevolent dead people. Carlos joins forces with Kit and Dawn as they fight for their lives-probably not for the last time-and eventually become friends, destined for a very interesting high school experience... PROBABLE RECURRING (17)

    First Part of New Season

    by warlock411

Don't you think the first few shows would deal with the end of season six. After all that happened there would be one hell of a lot of fall-out. Willow took a human life ( I don't blame her ) but still you do the crime you pays the time, right ? Xander and Anya have a lot to work out are we just supposed to forget it all ? In my opinion season 6 was the weakest but still better than a lot of the crap on TV. Hopefully season 7 will be better.

    New season woes

    by Johnny Dagger

I'm thinking the reason the past season wasn't that great was because Joss hasn't been writing as much as he should. Although the possibility of Dawn in a cute little cheerleading outfit is enough to make me watch this fall.....
