No Tron movie sequel in the works

    by rick mccallum

That's the official word by Disney which I read somewhere. The studio is exploring the possibility but nothing has been officially greenlit, despite what we might have read. All these graphics we're seeing are for the video game.

Tron 2.0 is NOT using the Unreal2 engine!!!

    by sfa

What the FUCK? Get a brain! It isn't using the Unreal2 Engine, its being made by Monolith and therefore its using their own Lithtech engine. Which I don't like one bit. It made AvP2 too angular and cartoonish for my liking. There's just something a bit 'off' about it, plus for what you get on screen compared to the Q3 engine is far far less in terms of CPU/GFX card to visuals i.e runs at 1/2 the FPS of other 'rival' engines. But then again its perfect for Tron, which is all bright colours and angles.

The Matrix Trilogy is the unofficial sequel to Tron

    by prof. pop-cult

I like that theory posted in the previous TalkBack. It makes me wonder even more if the Wachowskis are fans of Tron, and if they carefully crafted The Matrix screenplay in such a way where it actually can be the sequel. This Tron sequel theory makes me want to check out The Matrix sequels even more to see if there are elements that might support or negate this theory. For example, one can easily imagine a scene when Neo needs to get away from the Agents quickly. So he summons a sleek motorcycle which is quickly rendered right before his eyes. And the Agents, chasing him, dive forward into the street and jump onto their own motorcycles which render quickly before them, too. The Tron lightcycle scenes could then be considered antecedents to such moments in The Matrix sequels.

repeat from last tron news bit...

    by argh!

As far as Tron goes, aren't you people supposed to be ashamed of having even seen it? Well, you must be, because the Simpsons says you are. As far as sequals go, most movies suck in general, so if you do actually make a good movie, why bother ruining its reputation with a sequel that will probably suck? And for all you people that want to see Batman:Year One and all that, that would most likely suck; average audience goers would have no idea how to relate it to the franchise. It's easier to ruin something great than you might think. Be content with what is out there. Let movie makers make movies because they're inspired to, not because you feel the need to buy back a piece of your childhood with another soul-less sequel. ARGH! Out!

    why I love Tron.

    by astaldo

I was born in 1983, so obviously I couldn't see the thing in theaters. But when you watch the thing, it gives you such an eighties, video arcade, techno-robo, laser tag feeling-it is just great! Yes, I think it goes with the transformers in my memory as both used that nutty "circuit board" texture on so many of the backgrounds and characters. And, as a result of that movie I have a fetish for blacklights-Hey, look, I'm a program! Using the computers available back then it must have taken a month to make a second of film-oh, and Unicron from the transformers movie has a lot of similarities to the MCP. Personally, I don't think the Matrix being a "sequel" thing holds up as Tron's MCP was able to actually "absorb" the man's body and mind into the computer world, and in the Matrix they are in the computer world only in mind, and a socket needs to be surgically implanted in their physical bodies to bring them in.

    by jccalhoun

Tron 2.0 is a game, not a movie, being developed by monolith studios, and since lithtech was spun off of monolith, it is only natural that they will be using the lithtech engine. The web site tronkillerap is for the game and Sid Mead is doing designs for the game. These pics have been out for a while. http://www.tron-sector.com/ has lots of links to other better screen shots as well as a videoclip of actual gameplay footage and a press release from Disney about the game.

The new Tron video game according to last months' edition of PC Gamer will be using the Monolith Lithtech engine, but it won't actually be the Lithtech engine. Apparently there is a new engine that they have been working on which is supposed to be even more sophisticated. And for those that decry Lithtech, I have 4 words for you: No One Lives Forever. Tron was a fun movie when I was a kid and its a fun movie now. truly amazing how it was made with the technology available. If you havent seen or heard how they made this movie, you should get the 20th anniversary DVD just for that reason. Just to get a feel of how much hard work it took to bring this movie together and how they utilized the clunky computer systems of the day.

    by spab2

For information: The LithTech engine is a 3D graphics engine made by LithTech. It's not as fast or pretty as the Quake 3 engine but it's cheaper to license. Sadly for Aliens-versus-Predator fans it means version 2 of our favorite game was kind of clunky, as Monolith (LithTech's other half) got the contract from Fox Interactive..... LithTech's blurb says "The LithTech Triton System is the visual effects-heavy derivative of LithTech

    What I Think.

    by jak flash 2000

Interesting. The fact that the god giys face is not restricyed by a helmit is a good idea. We can now relate more to him. But the bulking up of the suit doesnt work, its overdone and is not realistic. But keep the wheels on the elbows, adds more chance of the light cycle, and makes the suit more real. As for the bad guy? Brilliant, broading, loks tough and has phisical prense which all villains need and few have. But the circuit colour scheme could be changed in favour of something a little more modern or realistic. Also one addition (though maybe going to far) is that when good guy cycles or fights or something. A kind of targeting contact lens scans over his eyes. Sort of like Lost in Space with the dog fight in the opening. Hope that helps

    The TRON - Matrix Theory

    by nocureforfools

the whole deal here is that the basic idea of the Matrix -- heros trapped in a computer world saved by a hipster-geek cyber-messiah -- is basically the same. i don't think the Matrix was meant to be a sequal, but obviously it was -ahem- "inspired" by Tron. the key differences being that Tron is truly unique, both in terms of it's groundbreaking (at the time) design and interesting take on an old mythological tale (the whole Campbell thing, the whole messiah thing, etc.). the Matrix is hopelessly derivaive and bland. nothing in the film is terribly original -- even "bullet time" was being used in car commercials for years before the film was made. in edition, that whole leather-diva sci-fi look was already tired. the cyber thing was already tired. the wire-fu thing had already reached it's apex a good 5-10 years in HK before the film was released. i'm still sort of baffled by the fact that the Matrix was a blockbuster while Tron actually didn't do very well. weirdness. i think it's because people prefer the bland and derivative to the original, the stale and overused to the fresh, new and exciting....

somebody else who thinks The Matrix was overrated. It had visual concepts that have been used for years in Japanese Animation that were suddenly hailed as totally original by the brainless closeminded america , combined with Keanu Reeves (who barely manages to shake his "bill and ted" accent)and anybody who thought it was so mindblowingly incredible when that tart jumped her first building to escape the bads should watch the Six Million dollar man some time-I bet your brains would melt. The only good part of this movie was Hugo "Elrond" Weaving, when he finally shut that ass Reeves mouth by removing it. After that there is one yeehah derivative wire-fu moment after another.

Just a theory, but Tron was WAY ahead of its time, and therefore was not well received by the masses. Matrix, as you said, rehashed some old ideas and hit at a time when almost everybody has become computer literate and could 'get it'. Don't get me wrong - I enjoyed Matrix, but Tron was and is in a class by itself.
Just a thought. If you read this, let me know what you think.

    by crispone

Man, I LOVED Photon! We had two in Dallas, and I was so sad when they closed. None of the laser tag type things that have come out since have ever been quite the same. Photon played cool music, and the environment was so cool. I will say, however, that the helmets were a bit awkward. There was a bridge in the arena which was part of an observation deck for people to come watch the game being played. When I would run under that bridge, I would keep forgetting to compensate for that extra 4 inches sticking above the top of my head and bash into it. Still, I miss it.

Manos: Good Theory / CrispOne: Photon!

    by nocureforfools

hey, Manos. yeah, that's actually probbaly more accurate. when the Matrix was released, the whole computer thing had become more pedestrian -- like tvs or VCRs -- and everyone used one at work, had a grasp on the internet, a vague idea of hacking, virtual reality, etc. so, your probably right. personally, i was extremely underwhelmed by the Matrix. i kept thinking, as i watched it, "this is just a joyless version of Tron with gimicky stunts." and just sort of laughed at most of it.****CrispOne. yeah, Photon totally rocked. i wish they would bring something like that back. the whole thing could most likely be done much better now. failing that, there's always painball. but paintball lacks the superfun cyber-dork image. it has more of a burned out vet on a bender feel to it, which has it's own charm, of course. plus, those pellets hurt! ouch!

I've read the book and want to read Neuromancer once I finish reading a few other books I've bought.
I thought a lot of Snowcrash and the Matrix were similar too. The whole avatar thing really sticks out IMO as in the Matrix you create a picture of yourself and in Snowcrash you create a representative of yourself to go into the virutal world.
Tron 2 would be great. I haven't seen the original in years but as a kid I loved it. Used to watch it all the time.
