TRON 2.0 News!

Published at:  Jun 27, 2002 7:46:35 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here... TRON 2.0 is one of those erection concepts. One of those things that if done right would have me screaming joygasms for months, and spitting out fire and shitting thunder if they did it wrong. I love TRON. Own it on Video, VideoDisc, LaserDisc, Dvd and 16mm film. TRON is just one of my happy places, and through all this CG innovation, and the evolution of computer programming... As teams of people work on programs, I've often wondered about the concepts of what collective souls being put into programs would be like.... Would WINDOWS be as schizophrenic in person as it is on my computer? Would APPLE's OS-X Be like a lick orgy at the Baskin Robbins? Hmmmm, important questions to be sure!

Harry...I read your site quite often, but never really have any information since I mostly work with video games. I recently did some work with a company called Monolith Productions who are putting together a game loosely based on the movie TRON.

Tron (for the PC) is a stand alone game. It is not being based on any other project or film to date. But what is interesting is that the suits were so happy with the project, that a second game is already in development for a 2004 release with the new film TRON 2.0.

We had several Disney artists visit our studios the other day to comment and throw ideas back and forth on the "updated" look for the characters and enviroments. A good portion of our original ideas are going to be incorporated into a new feature film to be released around the same time the new game hits (fall 2004) One of our team asked if any of the original actors want to come in and have their movements captured, and they said "Bruce (Boxlightner sp?) and Jeff (Bridges) have yet to see the final draft and sign off on the script, but when they do...we'll set up some time for them."

**MY PERSONAL $.02**

What got me was that they said "When they sign..." not "If they sign..."
So I am thinking that our man Flynn will be back :-)

    Tron 2

    by gouache

    Can it be?
Tron will have a sequel? I hope so! By the users I hope so!!!

I wonder how it will be. Seeing that computers are apart of everybody's lives now. Will we see Tron and Flynn packing guns and shooting things as they are forced to play QUAKE or dodging falling multicolered blocks while some bored secretary plays TETRIS on her lunch break.

Will ENCOM computers have buggy operating systems or Flynn be a rock star like Steve Jobs.

Probably not but I can Dream.

    END OF LINE.

    this guy is wrong

    by jccalhoun

Monolith is only working on Tron 2.0 they are not working on a game set in the original Tron universe. The Tron 2.0 game is not a sequel tie in. They are doing the game first as a kind of testing the water for a sequel. THat Tron 2.0 web site is actually for the videogame, not the movie. Go to a gaming site like bluesnews.com or shacknews.com and do a search for tron 2.0 and you will find information a lot more accurate than this.

    Matrix/Tron similarites...

    by workshed

I remember walking out of the theatre thinking JESUS THEY STOLE TRON. The computer generated world of TRON is even referred to as 'the matrix' by characters in the movie. No-one ever mentions it but I remember Tron getting swamped by the hype over E.T.
There was no contest who would win a SPIELBERG vs DISNEY contest in 1982.
Those of you who haven't seen TRON - look again! It was the beginning of something entirely new.
Oh, and that reminds me, whatever happened to THE BLACK HOLE ???

    Ahhh! 80ies nostalgia.

    by max rockatansky

Tron is in the same vein as the GI Joe, He Man and Micronauts revival.
I think Disney knows that there is a core audience that will instantly be reminded of the fond memories they have of the original.
The first weekend the seats will be packed, until the fanboys realize that the product on the silver screen has nothing to do with the little gem of the eighties.
The thing is with the CGI so advanced, the new movie will definetly not have much similarities with the original.
    Remember Planet of the Apes.

    The book rocked

    by zim zala bim

Yes, I am that rare Tron geek. I played the video games in the early 80s. In 1983 I got the novelization of the movie Tron, written by Brian Daley. Daley was a fine, fun writer (pass away a few years ago). Name sound familiar? He was the scripter for the Star Wars Radio Dramas, which rocked. Thanks to Brian Daley, I can never throw a frisbee again without pretending I'm Tron or Flynn or Sark. I didn't see Tron until 1992, and though I enjoyed it, it didn't rock like the book. Do yourself a favor and look for some of Daley's finer works: Han Solo at Stars End. Han Solo and the Lost Legacy. Requiem for a Ruler of Worlds. Also, I belive he wrote the Robotech novels under the penname Jack McKinney. Those are pulpy, but fun, in a chain-gun kind of way.

    Jeff Bridges Rocks

    by frankcobretti

I loved Tron as a kid. Watched it several times, read the book, thought the light cycles were incredibly cool, played the "Discs of Tron" computer game for hours on end. I rented Tron several months ago, and was disappointed. It wasn't as I remembered it, but then again I remembered it through a child's eyes. If Tron 2.0 gets made, and I hope it does, I'll go see it with my son. I won't expect to love it, but I expect he will. That is, if Disney does its job properly. PS Jeff Bridges has been in some bad movies, but he's never been bad in a movie. I'd go see it just for him because the Dude, after all, abides.

    The Black Hole! (and Tron)

    by crispone

Yeah - the Black Hole was a great flick, though the ending was kinda weird. But for those of you knocking Tron: How many of you actually saw it in it's proper context? You have to realize when this film came out, what other concepts we'd seen on screen at the time, what kind of technology was in place at the time, and all of that to fully appreciate it. Home PC's were still pretty new at the time, and on the whole, computers were fairly mysterious to most people. Tron was one of the first (not THE first) films to talk about "What if computers take over the world someday?" And of course, graphics like that had never been seen, and to top it all off, NOBODY had thought about the concept of people and computers being integrated. It was a pioneering film in several aspects.

Jack McKinney was actually two guys cowriting the Robotech books. Maybe Daley was one of them. On another note, Last Starfighter is not bad, although the scene at the beginning where the whole town comes to watch the hero beat the arcade game is the cheesiest thing I have ever seen.

Stick with the Cold Blue, Neon Glow and Vector Graphics!!!

    by nocureforfools

the coolest thing about Tron is the look. if they update it, i really hope they keep with the minimalist stuff. maybe clean it up and make it look more fluid, but keep the cold blues, neon glow and vector shit. maybe there could bea part where they enter "virtual environments" or something, but dear god don't Matrix-ify it. first, because the Matrix SUCKED ASS. there is nothing cool about fetish leather disco heros. there is nothing cool about wire fu. "there is no spoon" is not deep or clever, it's mindless. Tron was great because it never pretended to be deep. and the whole idea that these little computer people looked up to their programmer as a god was great. why do i get the sinking feeling that they are gonna focus group this thing into oblivion? oh well. too bad.

Great book on video game nostalgia

    by crispone

This past weekend, I had a look at a book called High Score by Rusel Demaria, and oh man oh man did it take me back! It's basically about video game history, and there were photos of things in there that I hadn't seen since I was 12. TRS-80's, Atari game boxes, those little desktop versions of arcade games like Frogger and Pac Man, The Colecovision and Intellivision consoles, game packages for some of those great C64 games like Karateka and Pinball Construction Set, screenshots of old games like Marble Madness, Star Castle, Robotron 2040, Defender, and a bunch of other stuff. Of course, it covers games up through the 90's too, but if you were into games back in the 80's, it'll take you right back.

    Last Starfighter/Tron 2.0/Krull

    by alex rogan

As the resident expert on The Last Starfighter, I must say it is VERY much worth seeing. It is a sci-fi classic that has not gotten its due credit. Also, the novelization of it adds some depth and is worth reading as well.

I was in contact with a person two or three years ago who claimed a sequal was in the works and and even sent me some of the script, but I was pretty sure it was BS and since nothing materialized to support it I guess I was right.

Now, as for TRON 2.0 (the game) there is a preview at http://www.gamesradar.com/previews/default.asp?subsectionid=176&articleid=63607&pagetype=2 and a trailer for the game online at http://www.tron-sector.com/media/tron20.zip (Windows Media format)

I'm pretty surprised this game is coming out, 5 years ago Disney Interactive developed an demo of a Lightcycles games and the suits killed it saying nobody was interested in TRON. One of the developers leaked the demo to the web and I have a copy.

Now one 80's movie that left an openening for a sequal and never followed up was Krull, the son of Colwyn and Lyssa is supposed to come to rule the universe. Since that son would probably be around 30 right now, I say it's time to get Krull-2 underway.

    by leescoresby

Not because Tron is a great movie and I'm afraid of them screwing it up, but because I'll have to deal with page upon page of Harry rants telling execs how they should be doing things. They'll be all over articles that are completely unrelated. There'll be thinly veiled sniping ala Scooby Doo. And if anything good should come from it, Harry will refuse to admit he made any bad calls (ala Matthew Lillard). The whole Scooby thing left a bad taste in my mouth. Is it a good movie? Not especially. Did it deserve to have Harry shooting thunder out of his ass? Not especially.

    "Reboot" did it better

    by blabbermouse

'Tron' still holds up visually - a textbook case of how cool design - done to bring out the strengths of early CGI - can make even basic animation look cool. (And even today, 'Tron's 'CGI still rocks). ============== That said, the CGI 'childrens' series 'Reboot' put 'Tron' to shame in terms of exploring a microcosmic world existing inside a computer. The show's gimmick: whenever 'the user' loaded a game into the computer, the characters would 'reboot' into the game's characters while retaining their original personalities. ============= In terms of eyepopping animation, clever twists on computer terms & catchphrases & truly fascinating, three-dimensional (pun intentional) characterizations, 'Reboot' is the show to go with. Keep an eye on Cartoon Network's 'Toonami' - the most recent place the show aired.

    by kentucky colonel

I admit it. I have both DVDs on the shelf, right beside Godzilla 2000, The Malteese Falcon and the Simpsons 1st season Box. It takes all kinds I guess. I guess I'll take another shot of that sweet, sweet Kentucky Bourbon and watch my new "Say Anything" DVD. Flynn, my man! How the fuck you been? The TRON SE DVD, by the way, rules. The transfer and the digital sound were done with obvious affection. Bucky says check it out. Sequels suck ass, but I'll see it anyway. Matrix is the sequel is Tron... conspiracy theory....

    by jasher78

When I walked out of The Matrix I had no clue. When I bought the DVD and watched it 10 times in a row, I had no clue. But then one day, the powers that be at Dinsey released the Tron Special Edition DVD. Of course, I bought it immediately. At that point... at the end of that viewing, I sat there with my mouth hanging wide open and hundreds of thoughts racing through my head. I ran out and told all my friends of my discovery, but they all slapped me silly and called me a geek. I know it to be true. Here is what I discovered: 1) THE M.C.P. develops over the year to become what we know to be, THE MATRIX 2) All the RED GUARDS are the AGENT programs 3) AGENT SMITH is what SARK evolves into. It was his next step to control the computers, before the computers (MCP/MATRIX) took hold of him. 4) DUMONT, is equivilant to ORACLE 5)and MOST convincing is that MORPHEUS spoke of the previous "ONE", that NEO was the second "One". Well, guess what USER was the FIRST "THE ONE"? FLYNN!!! DUH!! FLYNN was the first ONE, the one who could control the Matrix, the MCP, could turn the tide... There is so much there, it makes me absolutely giddy. The MCP found a way to get back online and with the invent of new virtual technologies and a worldwide netowrk, the MCP was able to branch out grow from a simple video game system to a worldwide virtual world that took out not only his allies, but all the users that could ever harm him. EXCEPT for the ONE user that developed him in the first place, that was able to take him down... FLYNN/NEO/THE ONE. I don't care what Disney or WB say. To me this creates such a full dynamic universe and it makes me love it so much more. Whether or not they meant to do it, I love it!! Awesome.

Tron:the original divorced dad matinee special

    by aquafresh

Saw "Tron" in 1982 in an empty cinema in New Hampshire with my deadbeat dad. It will forever stick in my mind as "that" movie. I thought it sucked back then, but figured my negative viewing experience had tainted it. Wrong! Saw it recently, man, it blows. The graphics are great, but its chocked full of exposition and "techspeak" that noone can follow, let alone a 12 year old kid circa 1982. Well, at least one who wasn't glued to his Tandy computer. Loved the intellivision "Tron:Deadly Discs" game, however. Anyway, thought I'd share a moment of my painful adolescence with y'all.

What an amazing concept...I don't care that it isn't true. It's still ridiculously cool to think about and make geeky connections to. Isn't that, first and foremost, what this site is all about? Reveling in your geekhood with your fellow geek collective? :) That said...Tron could be seen as "medieval times" (the historical period, not the theme restaurant) with the light cycles, disc games, et al. being the substitutes for gladitorial combat. Using the games, the MCP is able to keep the population under control by culling it. Flash forward to the world of the Matrix, and we see that oppression is acheived through subtler means (such as sticking you in a cubicle) just like our lives :) I love it. Great fun. I say we petition to make "Tron" the official prequel to The Matrix. We can even complain about how the prequel's CGI is unimpressive compared to the effects of the "later" films. Just like that other franchise. :)

I don't play video games that often, but oh do I remember playing them as a child. TRON DEADLY DISCS for the Mattel Intellivision ROCKS! I can remember playing TRON DEADLY DISCS for hours; getting 100,000s of points, and then, all of a sudden, getting gang hit by all the higher-level baddies and vaporizing. That's it. No continues. MovieGames

    by frankcobretti

I vote we create a new genre: the moviegame. You know, the kind of movie that leaves you thinking, "Yup, that'll be in the game." AOTC is a good example. The chase through the asteroid belt? Yup, that'll be in the game. The Blade Runner ripoff sequence? Yup, that'll be in the game. The battle at the end? Yup, etc ... TRON started it; perhaps TRON will continue it. Cobra out.

    Reply to Talkback

  • As far as Tron goes, aren't you people supposed to be ashamed of having even seen it? Well, you must be, because the Simpsons says you are. As far as sequals go, most movies suck in general, so if you do actually make a good movie, why bother ruining its reputation with a sequel that will probably suck? And for all you people that want to see Batman:Year One and all that, that would most likely suck; average audience goers would have no idea how to relate it to the franchise. It's easier to ruin something great than you might think. Be content with what is out there. Let movie makers make movies because they're inspired to, not because you feel the need to buy back a piece of your childhood with another soul-less sequel. ARGH! Out!

So what if it is pretending to be deep, all movies pretend. I think that's what makes the most memorable movies. An overdramatization of events gives the movie a sureal ambiance. Matrix is sapposed to be intense, because saving the human race is intense. Just drop the cynicism and lose yourself in the manufactured hysteria.

You guys are now officially in my cool book. Thanks for those links. I'm actually quite miffed that I may never get to see this stuff. Here's hoping either Rhino video picks it up or I get some successful hits on kazaalite. ;o)

    TRONCHRONIC

    by tomvee

Why remake mediocre movies? I don't get it. Of course, it saves having to come up with an original concept, something Hollywood apparently finds daunting. TRON was at best an OK film for its time, it never had a particularly big audience, had great music, and made for a great arcade game. Unwatchable today.

    Another "Tron" concept.

    by anim8er2

Has anyone seen the short-lived TV series "Auto-Man"? I think that was the name. A computer generated "hologram" that looks a lot like the world in Tron comes to the real world as a crime fighting super hero. I saw it as a re-run on the Sci-Fi Channel. I never saw it when it was actually broadcast in the '80s. I wonder which came first, Auto-Man or Tron. My bet is Tron came first, but it would be an interesting twist if the reverse was true...........

    Tron came first

    by blabbermouse

Hey, thanks for reminding me of the show's title. Someone was asking me if I remembered a TV show that was like Tron & I couldn't remember it was called 'AutoMan' to save my life. ============ I think it was the same producer, or one of Tron's producers who was trying to cash in/recycle some of Tron's special efx into a lame-ass hour series. I remember a zippy car & some day-glo type lighting efx on the guy's suit. Whadda stinker it was (correct me if I'm wrong): Desi Arnaz Jr. as a shlub/genius computer programmer who whips up AutoMan as a computer simulation (who can somehow exist in the real world) based on an assortment of pop culture heroes. Unlike 'Tron', best left forgotten...
