Regardless of what I've read about this movie and how bad the script was, I'm fucking sold. That was the best Star Trek trailer in a long time. The opening image of the city, those awesome looking ships, the way the other ship cloaked, and that last shot of Data jumping into the void have convinced me that this is a must see. In the last few years Trek has become like sex with a lead condom: they're going through the motions but that's it. Trek needs to be totally rethought and Nemesis is not the right direction to go in. Dune buggies? Bring back the Doomsday Machine!

A casual observer rates the Star Trek movie series

    by dark knight lite

    1. Wraith of Khan - without doubt ST's finest moment 2. First Contact - Horror elements and solid action make this a standout 3. Undiscovered Country - Nick Meyer saves the day once again 4. Voyage Home - Pure entertainment 5. Search for Spock - good story marred by BAD production values 6. The Motion Picture - an ambitious failure 7. Insurrection - yawn 8. Final Frontier - Bill shoots and misses 9. Generations - bad and boring, the nadir. Hey just my two cents, but as someone not consumed with all things Trek, I hope this lends some perspective to the upcoming talk back nonsense. My wife thinks Generations better than I've rated it though. Dark Knight Out.

    Aliens that look like aliens!!!

    by lordweymont

Wow, looks darker which is fucking cool. First Contact is def. the best of the Next Generation. Though the story line is rushed, still a cool movie. This movie does look dope. My main point is that Star Trek fucks up and stands out because the aliens ALWAYS look humanoid. This is where Farscape and Star Wars rule. Hopefully, this movie will feature aliens that look just that, alien from a human. By the way, what the fuck is up with talk back forum? The thing is HUGE. AND END THE POP UP'S.

One more thing, T3, TTT, and Star Trek will be attached to MiB 2!!!!!!!

Star Trek for the Lowest Common Denominator

    by cheet

I ain't no Trekkie or Trekker or what not - I just wanted to see Dante Spinotti (the cinematographer of Heat and L.A. Confidential) doing sci fi. All I can say is that does not look like Star Trek with all the ridiculous juvenile panderings to the action crowd. What's even more hilarious is they decided to kick out the action jams with such elderly folk. Do they all wheeze and pant and hold their sides after they've driven their sleek new Federation SUV? Funniest moment of the year could be a shot of Riker running in slow motion....

Star Trek is far superior to Star Wars. THERE! I said it! Now I dare you talkbackers to shower me with your ridicule! I DARE YOU!! HA HA HA HA HA HA HA! Anywho, st is far more mature and intelligent than the juvenile sw. st just seems better thought out, with its real and theoretical physics and well done military themes. I just find it far more compelling. And, the best part is, (wesley crusher notwithstanding) there's no annoying whiny 10 yearolds turned whiny teenagers played by prettyboys who can't act! I don't care if the TNG crew is getting old, at least they can act!! Now that I've antagonised all of you, I'm waiting for the negative response. Remember, I dared you. P.S. Trailer kicked ass

  • As they have said, this film has not been made to look like any other Star Trek film. The special effects were killer. Wow. I love the Romulan city, the Reman complexes, the Reman (Romulan?) ship that was cloaking like a mad mother fucker, and the Enterprise dogfighting. I wonder...are the Romulans and their Reman cousins going to work together to destroy the Federation? Is Shinzon the new Procounsel leading Romulus? Is Data's tin-man a cousin of his, or is it Lore? Do the Remans speak, or are they some bad mofos of some kind we have not yet seen?--------------->As to the dissers here...go fuck off and kiss your asses goodbye. Anybody in here who appreciates good storytelling with cool sfx, characters, and story know that fuckers like you are wasting your breath (or your typing). GRIMLOCH: Your name serves you well. Your future outlook as a human being is looking grim. You write this pitiful line: "...the franchise is crap, and will remain crap. Trek ended long ago, kid. get over it." Um, I think not. Where have you been living? In your parents cellar? This franchise has existed for what, ~35 years?! And how many fans, be it Trekkers, casual fans, or even curious movie goers have watched the television shows and movies, and even read the books? Millions of people! The Trek franchise is bigger than Star Wars, and will forever remain so. For the record, I do like Star Wars and LOTR. Kick ass movies in their own right. I agree what has been said that Trek is more for the intellectual viewer, and Star Wars is for the kids and adults who want to escape into fantasy. Grimloch is neither...same with DarthShitty. You two are severly outnumbered here, so buzz off. You and others' troll trash postings make you look like ignorant fools. ____---KNEEL---____ before Z0D so I can vaporize you into oblivion

    Grimloch

    by elwood blues

Why do you have to come off like such a pompuous asshole? I mean, you have an opinion, and as long as its your true opinion, its valid. But why tell everyone who thinks differently that they're so wrong, so inferriorer, and so stupid? (which, though you don't directly state it, it is clearly implied in your word choice and tone). It doesn't help you share your opinion, it doesn't help convince others you're right, it just makes you sound like an asshole who thinks they're better than everyone else, which is a great way to make anyone discount your views and not take them serious on any level. Grow up a little, there are some people on this site who have, and like a little more intellectual disection of film, not the "I know you are but what am I" level of insults. Anyone know of a site in which people are a little more mature in discussing film? I'm seriously looking for one. Email me or talk back about it. I'm listening, cause i'm tired of the 70 percent BS factor on this site's talkback.

    by trader groucho

Like so many others, I read the Nemesis script that's been floating around the Net (Triple X too. Anyone review the script yet???), and while I do not want to issue a pile of spoilers, I will venture so far as to say that it ain't Lore. Data's dad won't be making an appearance either. The scenes I saw in the trailer, BTW, confirm the accuracy of scenes described in the script. Oh, and Trek (or, as they call it at Paramount, "The Franchise") isn't dead as long as there are Trekkers willing to part with a few credits at the local Macroplex. -- Trader Groucho

    Grimloch...

    by kypdurron

I find it amusing how you claim that Star Trek: The Motion Picture is a the greatest, and that it is "a movie first" when it was originally written to be the pilot episode of another Star Trek series (Star Trek 2 or something like that). It didn't go over because Spok wouldn't do it, though.

So far, First Contact is my favorite, however I haven't seen Wrath of Khan in a very, very long time and don't remember it at all. First Contact is an awsome movie, and would be even if you were to take away the Star Trek name, which Insurrection and Generations, as well as basically all odd numbered movies have gone on.

I'm not a hardcore fan in the slightest - I only watch the shows and movies, and that's where most of my knowledge stops, but what is being said by Grimloch is pure BS. He seems to be in love with the music composer as well - who can't touch a hair on John Williams.

    Sadly, Grimloch Is (Mostly) Right

    by johndrake

I hate to admit it, but I agree with much of Grimloch's analysis. While I enjoyed the Next Generation series more than he obviously did (apart from the awful first, patchy second and inexcusable seventh seasons), and found much to like about DS9 before the Dominion war arc turned it into a high-tech soap opera retread of every cheap World War II film you could imagine, I think his take on Trek's cinema franchise is right on the money.

The first Trek movie is one of the few that works as a piece of cinema and not just as a bloated television episode. I don't care for the film nearly as much as Grimloch seems to - after you get over the novelty of seeing the characters reunited and the remodeled Enterprise, the story itself is just a retread of elements the original series handled better. I will admit that the production design was cutting-edge for 1979 (it should be, given that everyone from Syd Mead and Robert McCall to Ralph McQuarrie and Doug Trumbull worked on the film at some point) and the music is arguably some of the best ever composed for any film, setting this one far apart from the rest of the series in that regard. It's also the only Trek film that allows the central characters any real growth or development

    STAR TREK 10...its about time

    by batman_9

man it seems like 99's INSURECTION was ages ago. i enjoyed trek 9 but it was more of a feel good movie than an action film. i can't wait for NEMISIS. if the stories about it being similiar to THE WRATH OF KAHN are true then i'm pumped. the trailer looked freaking awesome. unlike any star trek trailer i've seen before...less focus on the typical star trek dialouge and more on the action and the scenery. this shinzion could be the best villain in the movies yet. it'll take some serious evil doing to be worse than kahn and the borg though. but whats with this "final journey" stuff, i thought patrick stewart and rick berman set the record straight on that a long time ago...said as long as the movie made money the franchise would continue with the next generation crew. has that changed again? you know my only complaint about the next generation films is that they run more like bond movies. each movie is independent. in the kirk days, II, III, IV and V all took place back to back...right after each other. in IV, kirk got punished for hijacking the enterprise in eventually destroying it in III. but in VIII picard disobeys starfleet orders and engages the borg...shouldn't he have been punished or something said about it at the end or even the beginning of IX? i don't know...just rambling. i'll be there for this one. looks like it could be better than FIRST CONTACT and thats no easy feat.

How can anyone be fooled by this point to get excited by anything Berman and that gang put out.
Shinzon looks a lot like F.Murray Abraham's character in the last film. These villians are basically the same guy over and over again.
I am tired of them trying to rip off and do what "The Wrath of Khan" did because all it comes off as is some poor man's rip off.
I am going to see this film, but I am dreading it.

If the federation scientists know how to teleport things and make ships fly faster than the speed of light, 2 things that completely violate the laws of physics and which most physicists regard as impossible, then HOW is it OBVIOUS that they wouldn't be able to invent the Genesis device? The technology behind it its just as unexplainable as that of beaming and warp drive. There is NO logic in your statement. That said, I agree for the most part with the assessment of the quality of the films put forth by you and Grimloch. TMP was the best. WOK was entertaining, but changed the nature of the ST movies from there on out to be crowd-pleasing, mostly brainless action pics. Voyage Home worked because it was so well paced and had so much fun with the characters, although it was silly. I think the rest are pretty much crap. First Contact was so-so. Generations is total crap, but even it is not as bad as Final Frontier, which had no action, no budget, no ending. I am not excited by Trek anymore, but I might see this anyway, damnit, because I likes the special effects...(That's why I'm seeing Reign of Fire, and why I'm skipping MIB2)

    Dune Buggies = Bad Movie

    by qualopec

To Ebert's rule that no good movie has ever featured a hot-air balloon, I think we can add a Dune Buggy Rule to the same effect. Once you see those wacky vehicles bouncing around in the desert, you know that the budget was so small that they had to shoot chase scenes out in the desert, where there's not a lot of expensive buildings, cars, and such to damage (and pay for). City chases are much more dramatic because of the tight streets, innocent bystanders, etc. Out in a vast wasteland, who cares?

A NONE STAR TREK FANS OPINON OF THE TEASER

    by moose420

allrighty I gots to be honest I'm not a star trek fan,I'm not trekkie or trekker or just a fan. I've only seen the first next generation movie and first contact and the first haft of inserection. Havn't seen the classics or whatever, hardly ever watch the shows. Actually the best star trek thing I've ever seen is that hilarous documentry "TREKIES" which by the way if u havn't seen u better go watch your missin out on a good laugh. Anyway so I watch this teaser and yes to me it looks like the best Star trek movie I've seen,KEWP IN MIND I HAVN"T SEEN THE CLASSIC ONES.It got tons of action and from what I've read the plot sounds great. Its true it does look a little Star Wars but O WELL is that a bad thing, to the averege viewer NO. Seriously this could possibly be better then the recent Star Wars films but when it comes to sci-fi I normally side on the star wars side of the fence but when it comes to these kinds of movies i settle on the LOTR side of town. So to all you trekkies and trekkers just watch it and keep your mind open to a new version of Star Trek, could be a better one?

    Troi's arc in Nemesis

    by trader groucho

(warning: spoilers) The excuse for not hearing more about the Remans sooner is that the Romulans kept the poor bastards on a pretty tight leash. All the dark stuff is because Remans live on the dark side of a planet or moon that doesn't spin. Their eyes are hyper-sensitive to light, but they can see in the dark just fine -- which plays in a hand-to-hand fight scene on the badly-damaged Enterprise. The Remans have some psychic powers. Troi is forced to see Picard's clone through a Reman leader's eyes. This psychic connection also plays an important role in the third act. Troi's arc also involves a change in her relationship to her imzadi, something along the lines of Paris and Torres from the seventh season of a different Trek show. As for Picard's clone being bald in the movie, that's kind of a bummer. There's some dialogue in the script about Picard enying his young double's full head of hair. It also sounds like the Trek folks amped the connection between the Picards in the final script, as the version I read was more about Picard trying to outwit his younger clone. As for the dune buggy thing, their excuse for that was some sort of radiation preventing the effective use of transporters (ie, another typical tech excuse). All that having been said, and even after reading the script, I'm still going to see this one at the theater. -- Trader Groucho

    by anser

You would rather it was STAR TREK 10: THE GUNGAN GAMBIT?

Seriously, while it looks like they're slowly catching up to 1995 out there at Camp Paramount, let me say one thing about ST:TMP: It was the BEST in ways that can never be taken away, even though it was also cruddy in lotsa details and overlong and stuff. What can't be taken away is that we waited almost TEN YEARS to get Star Trek back, and we finally got it, after an infinite soap opera. Goldsmith made memorable music, including that relative rarity, the intro score that's played before lights down/curtain up - I love that and so does Robert Wise who had previously used it on SOUND OF MUSIC. The opening scenes with the Klingons vessels were PURE MAGIC and such a breath of fresh air - you saw what the possibilities were. The infinitely long flyaround of the refitted Enterprise was just what it seemed like, a love letter to the long suffering fans (many of whom were extras in the movie). The rest was almost irrelevant. "VEEJER DOES NOT UNDERSTAND," what-ever! next monster please...

    Grimloch, you pathetic individual...

    by moderator

...First Contact didn't modify the already established Star Trek history, it RECTIFIED it. In the OS, they state that Zefram Cochrane is from the Alpha Centauri stellar system. This is absolutely impossible, since faster-than-light interstellar travel DIDN'T EXIST BEFORE HIS BIRTH! It would have been impossible for him to be a native of, or even temporarily visit, another stellar system, since he is the one whom invented "warp speed" later on in his life. Gene Rodenberry, or whomever wrote that particular episode, had a obvious lapse of logic. Cochrane was a human being, he was born and raised on Earth, and he remained there until the events depicted in First Contact. Another thing, they also HAD to rewrite ST history, in reference to the third world war (also known as the Eugenics War, during which Khan Sing became the leader of the Eastern Coalition). According to the OS episode "Space Seed" and the ST film "The Wrath of Khan", WW3 happened in 1996. Since evidently nothing of the sort occurred that year (not to mention that we had NOTHING even ressembling the futuristic hi-tech predicted to exist at that time), they moved that whole storyline approximately 57 years into the future, in the year 2053, approximately ten years before the events of the film. Grimloch, you're a miseducated imbecile. Get a life.

    cochrane continuity clarification

    by mr. smith

according to established continuity he was "zephram cochrane of alpha centauri" because he was the first to fly there with his newly descovered space warp. his was the first interstellar flight, and it created the first human colony, thus he was henceforth known to "history" as "of alpha centauri". sorry to have to sound like a continuity geek, but there it is.sidenote: nemesis looks ubercool. if it doesn't look cool to you, then don't go. but for heavan's sake-quit whining about it.

  • What is your point, Grimloch? Granted, you don't like most of the Star Trek that has been created in the past 25 years. You don't care for anything beyond TOS. Fine. Cool. But what I don't get is what you and others are trying to do. Are you trying to convert people? Are you trying to create havoc? Do you want to cause trouble? I don't get it. I could care less, and other Trekkers could care less. I will never follow a blind person into a maze, and you are blind Grimloch. You have your own opinions, your own ways of doing things. Fine. But I would never follow you because I am not like you. I watch Trek for entertainment, plain and simple. I don't watch it to examine it, picking all of its details apart like a surgical doctor. I am not that shallow. I am not that cynical. I am not that stupid and insane. And I AM NOT YOU. I am going to keep on watching Trek because I ENJOY IT, NO MATTER WHAT! _____----KNEEL----_____

Where do people pull these profound statements from...it can't be from out of thier ass can it? Before you Trekkies and Trekkers start lambasting me with sentences like "I was just so totally drawn out of the action because it looked so obviously CGI", let me point out a few things. There seems to be a big contingent of folks out there who upon seeing something like a big space battle, or a big city scape (like Coruscant in Star Wars for instance) they immediately start bleeting CGI. There will always be people who will hate big effects shots. They see something on screen that can never possibly exist in the real world and thier brain automatically screams "FAKE!" CGI could be a hundred time as good as it is now, and there will still be people who upon seeing a Sci-Fi or Fantasy movie, will beller about the awfull and obvious effects. These people just will never be fans of certain types of films. I have also noticed that most of the people complaining about CGI lately, are complaining about stuff that isn't CGI at all. The best example of this in resent memory is the Lord of the Rings. A bunch of people were bitching and moaning about some of the sceenes in that film, and how CGI it looked. Well, low and behold, I picked up a Cinefex magazine a few months ago, and was amazed to see how many practical effects were used. Much of the stuff people thought CGI, wasn't CGI at all, but miniatures, and models and full sized sets. So you see, much of what you dolts think is CGI really isn't, which means you can't tell what is real and what is CGI, and thats the whole point now isn't it?

    Looks good

    by blackbeltjones

I thought that this was an excellent trailer. I was iffy on wanting to see this movie, but that trailer had a lotta kickass to it. Got my squeaky wheel greasin'. And as mentioned already, it is an even numbered Trek, so it should be good. Don't know how that has happened so perfectly, but I guess it is just fate. As for the way I rank the films: 1)Wrath of Khan. Way cool film. Excellent villian and some great over the top acting. 2)First Contact. I just like this film. Lots of action and a decent story. And yes, time travel seems a bit to easy in the 23rd and 24th century. 3)The Undiscovered Country. Great effects that stand up over time, and a nice noir detective story in the background to boot. 4)The Motion Picture. This one grew on me over the years, because I like the idea of the Voyager satellite coming back to look for the creater. Very deep storyline, but the Director's cut made some very necessary edits that tighten up the film nicely. 5)Voyage Home. A little preachy and campy at times, but fun. Still love that line by Chekov - "Rank -- Admiral". 6)Search for Spock. Okay movie, but a little goofy at times. But it got Spock back into the picture. 7) Insurrection. Sappy love story got in the way of what could of been a much better movie. 8)Generations. Was a good movie, but it should of been all Next Generation crew or all Original Series crew. Seemed like it tried to do too much. 9)Final Frontier. I have to put an astrisk next to this one, because I can't give it a true spot in the line up. I honestly have not seen it all the way through, because people have always talked about how bad it was. My .02 chiming in.

Star Wars (at its best) rocks. Star Trek (at its best) rocks. That's all there is to it. Both have given me and many other years of happiness. So why bitch amongst yourselves about which is best? They're both good. Bitch about pap like Species 2 instead.

The Flaw of all Science Fiction

    by scylla

okay, well I gotta say that the trailer looks great, and I will no doubt see the film and enjoy it, since the first viewing of most films should be something that you can enjoy, with the obvious exceptions of Scooby Doo and Tomb Raider. But, onto my point. All these science fiction works, From Asimov to Trek, including the biblical Babylon 5, base the measurement of distance on light years, which because light is affected by gravity, are not in fact constant, so using them to measure distance means you are wrong, period. It's kind of sad really, seeing real science punch such a major hole in all fiction. I can only hope soon some sci fi will catch up to this as come up with a new way of doing it. no more 40 light year jumps, since god knows how long that could take, depending on where the light went over those years. Now that I'm done with my babble, can anyone tell me the direct link to download this trailer, or at least how to find it. I hate quicktime 5...

    Black Belt Jones vs Dolemite

    by ron mcdonald

  • First of all, I'm not a "hard core fan" of Star Trek. I watched the Original Series as a child, I was raised with The Next Generation, but I couldn't give a flying fuck about either Deep Space Nine, Voyager or Enterprise (although I found that the pilot episode, introducing the Suliban race and their temporal cold war, was somewhat interesting). I ABSOLUTELY LOVED First Contact, not simply because it was a ST film, but for the same reason the great majority of critics loved it as well: it was a great movie. I'm not a pimply teenager, I'm 22, I have a respectable job and a beautiful girlfriend/fiancee. I love great movies regardless of their franchise of origin. Both Insurrection and The Phantom Menace were shit. Both First Contact and Attack of the Clones were brilliant. Its as simple as that. So please don't criticize people for "wasting time" here on this ST talk back. What the hell do you think you've been doing so far?

Black Belt Jones would win this fight easy. Then he would go back to the pad to hang with Truck Turner and score on Nichelle Nichols.

The opening shots don't give any indication that this is a Trek film. They hired a competent, albeit generic action director/editor. The cinematography and color palatte looks a little clammier and murkier than the usual flatly-lit Trek product. The trailer plays up the action scenes. And the logo displays the "Nemesis" before the "Star Trek." If this is the last Gen film, make it a good one.

  • Hey all. Well I wouldn't call myself a hardcore fan. I'd place Star Wars (the original trilogy), Lord of the Rings, X-Files and Indy Jones before it. However I would say I'm a devout fan since I've closely followed the franchise my entire 26 years starting with watching the original series roughly 4 times ever weekend. Then I followed by seeing every film in the theater and watching TNG all the years it was on. I do count ST II, IV and VI as three of my all-time fav's and I give all three five out of five stars (I only do that for two Star Wars films!). I did watch DS9 until another show, Space: AAB was cancelled and I was so pissed I quit watching TV for awhile all together except for the X-Files and Law and Order. Sadly as a result I missed the whole dominion war (I wish cable would start showing DS9)I loved Voyager the first season but after that it was pure crap. So far Enterprise has been good, not great but good. Better then I expected. However I don't trip out if I miss an ep. The Generation films.... The first one sucked bad, worse the Shatner's debacle - ST:V. First Contact was a rollicking action ride which only suffered from the lameness of the Borg Queen, but Super Picard and the always fantastic James Cromwell as Cochran more then made up for it. I like Insurrection. It was light-hearted, fun and funny. I think it's only hated because only Trek fans check out Trek films anymore and too many of them are anal-retentive, wanting only explosions (reminds me of some SW fans too, instead they love the current films for that very reason) while IV was a hit since non-fans loved it (including my mom who hates Trek except for STII and IV). The biggest problem thus far is each TNG movie is like a 2-part ep of the series and never feels like a major motion picture the way the TOS movies did. They appealed to a wide range of movie goers not just devout fans. I'll admit even I haven't seen a TNG movie in the theater despite the fact I saw all the TOS movies in the theater starting with TMP. I just wait for the video or DVD release and enjoy it (or not) then. Now my thoughts on the trailer. I love the look of the trailer, dark yet some eye-opening effects and a very un-Trek feel to it, which is defiantly a good thing since Trek has fallen into a formula-matic rut. Anything fresh or new should be welcomed open-armed by fans. I agree it has a little bit of a Star Wars feel but more on teh darker side, the side of Star Wars Lucas seems to have abandoned despite the dark nature underlying in the prequels. I definably am looking forward to seeing more from Nemesis and if it continues to look this distinct and promising I maybe take it in this Dec. while waiting for the Second Coming of LOTR.

    star trek nemesis

    by zap

iv sin the nemesis trailer and it gets the thumbs up from me, and im a star trk fan who has lost faith in the franchise.hopefully, we'll c the enterprise E kick sum ass in this film. first contact saw it destroy a borg cube in seconds(the borg just seem 2 have got weaker and voyager have turned em into a joke) and not get nufin back and insurrection, well that was brief and crap. but whats all this talk of no decent dogfight since Wrath of Khan? hello, trek 6?a cloaked bird of prey kickin the crap out of the enterprise while kirk and co figure out a way of tryin to destroy it?it was the only film that had a decent story, no time travel and no super human. i aint against all of em, but its nice to have a story that puts the differences of two races in the centre of the story in a realistic way. treks 2 and 6 are my favourite. anyway, back to the trailer. it lookks ace and by the looks of it the enterprise finally has met a formidable foe.viewscreen being blown away?massive hole in the ship?wicked!iv bin waiting for a film where torpedos are fired and the enterprise gets wrecked. this could be it. i want a big space battle. the last one that really made me go wow was ST 6.but the jeep bit looks abit crap and data now has a double chin and wrinkles.but hopefully this will be real star trek, battles, explosions and a mean villian. i have faith kind of restored from this trailer and am gettin excited!
