Wolfgang Petersen's SUPERMAN & BATMAN Film Green To Go'
Hey folks, Harry here... Given SPIDER-MAN's meteoric rise at the box office, the high profile successes of all of Marvel's recent film endeavors, one has to be a tad curious why Warner Brothers has had its Superheroes in Cold Storage. Well 'The Captain' floated to me the following story about a project called ASYLUM - featuring both BATMAN and SUPERMAN... Now in reality, this project is the BATMAN VS SUPERMAN movie being written by Andrew Kevin Walker for Wolfgang Petersen. You can bet that since mid-May that project has been kicked into overdrive. The following is a rumor, and ASYLUM would be the codename for the project, much like LORD OF THE RINGS famed JAMBOREE title. Of course now that it appears here, you can bet it'll become something like LILLARD'S DISDAIN or something. If this film starts filming February 2003, that means they'll probably be aiming to launch this sucker for July 4th, 2004 - that'd be my bet. Let's see if it comes to be...
hey harry,
i work for a _____________ that gets info on upcoming movies straight
from studios. apparently a coworker talked with someone at warner
bros. today and was told that a green light was given to a movie with the
working title "ASYLUM", a film featuring both batman AND superman, which
would begin filming in february.
the other part, which i'm hoping is NOT true, is that this project is
taking the place of BATMAN: YEAR ONE... but i'm crossing my fingers that
they'll both get made in due time.

DOCTORS DISCOVER FUTURE X-MAN?
Mutant Found In Kazakhstan?
Hey, True Believer!
You know how they say that truth can be stranger than fiction? Well it looks
like that's the case, as the following was reported this weekend in the New
York Post in their "Weird But True" column:
"Doctors in Kazakhstan have made a hairy discovery.
A team of physicians in the former Soviet republic is baffled after
finding a 6-year-old boy covered head-to-toe in apelike hair. The boy,
identified only by his first name, Ablay, was discovered in the village of
Terymagash, a remote, mountainous hamlet.
Doctors report that Ablay also has 'surprising mobility,
flexibility, sociability, a kind of special intuition and a unique sense of
direction.'
The doctors believe nuclear radiation or a genetic disorder may be
responsible for Ablay's condition."
Sounds like a case for Dr. Henry McCoy and Professor X!

Let's hope that they revery to the original - 'Dark Knight Returns' movie, and the speculated-upon 'Superman v Doomsday' one.
'Batman Vs Superman'? Bullshit. -
I'll wait and see if this ever really happens... hopefully it will but Warners has been screwing up their superheroes badly with the exception of Smallville... I say make Batman into a one hour drama for TV and go back to the Neal Adams/Marshall Rogers issues for inspiration...

im fed up of hearing how Batman became batman. its been flashbacked to many times in the other movies, and i dont wanna hear about his first few fumbles before he became the dark knight!! Just let him get on with battling the super villains and bring on a kick ass Batman flick with a director attached that cares about the comic and not just his 'own unique vision'!!
-
I don't want to say plant, but this does sound like shite. Year One is wear the money is. The public is tired of flashy, campy, crap comic book movies. They WANT Year One! Unbreakable, X-Men, Spider-man, the upcoming Hulk... the money is there. ARE YOU LISTENING WARNER BROS?!!

Why would you want to make this movie instead of a Batman One movie or better yet, Batman No Man's Land. I would throw Batman and Superman movie in development Hell and then in to dead, because all it's gonna do is do a Joel Schemacher and screw up the Batman Universe even more. One more thing if they are ever going to make a Batman One movie, please put a little humor into it, don't make it drab like Spider-man in the comedy department, don't get me wrong I saw Spider-Man twice but what it was lacking was comedy, I thought Peter Parker was going to be like a Chandler on Friends/Daria on Mtv with sarcasm to survive in high school but instead we just got a geek without any reason why Harry and Mary-Jane liked the guy, as Spider-Man he was a geek with powers. Make Bruce Wayne a little funnier than he was in the last four, that is all I'm asking.

OR something. This seems like one of those fanboy fantasies that will never come to fruition. Like Spider-Man or X-Men or. . . wait a minnit! OK, so there's a chance. I'd love to see this, I love Peterson and he certainly has a handle on action/fantasy... hmmm... but I agree with the above poster - I like the concept of Year One, but in this, ignore all origins, because for chrissake, this isn't Weapon X - EVERYONE knows the story behind Bats and Supe. Have it just begin in mid-career. Leave the "how-it-all-began" stuff to Year One.

BAUF- Donner was fired by the producer of the Superman II movie, the Salkinds, not by any suit at Warner Brothers. Lots of nonsense abounded behind the scenes, most of it caused by the Salkinds wanting a big hit but not wanting to spend a nickle to get it. For more info see- http://www.deceptions.net/superman/

This morning they discovered that the spider-goat may have developed a taste for human blood. The good news is that the blood seems to have a positive effect on the fibers in the goat's milk. Scientists believe that it may be a result of the high iron content. Also, the goat laid several eggs last night. Scientists believe that she may have mated with a small spider that somehow made its way into her pen. They are eager to find out what will hatch from the eggs.
-
I don't get it. Please explain...is this a shot at Scooby Doo? Because i've heard Lillard is the only tolerable thing in the film.

The full name of the company that created the blood-drinking spider-goats is Nexia Biotechnologies. http://www.nexiabiotech.com/ Although there is no information about the newly discovered habits of the spider-goat on their website, you can get more info by emailing info@nexiabiotech.com.

....The NY Post is about as reliable as the National Enquirer or the Star. According to the cover of one of those trash rags, the Pope has authorized the building of titanium "Preist Robots" to take the place of pedophile Preists. I wouldn't trust the Post further than I could throw them. And there's a lot of them.
-
I read an extensive article on the subject in New York Times Magazine. Pretty cool stuff.

Then again if they decied against a McG Supes film that's good. Personally i think they should'nt make a superman/batman film but instead let Smallville run it's course then do a superman film with Welling and Rosenbaum have the writers come back for the film and have the Wacowski brothers direct. With Batman wait...the wounds are still not healed Batman has got a long life leave time to recover and be sure the memory of B&R. Instead wait a couple of years and then do year one of and get Paul Dini to do Batman The Dark Knight Returns (Animated) he's never let Batman fans down.

I remember a few years ago that everyone loved air force one and now everyone seems to hate it. Has Peterson actually made a film since then?

According to my sources deep inside Nexia, the spider goat eggs referred to in the previous talkback have hatched, and given birth to tiny spiders who spin milk. The exceedlingly rare Horned-milk-shitting-Goat-spiders are roughly 1/25 the size of a goat and first obeservations indicate that although they share in their birth parents lust for human blood, they have confusingly been attempting to spin webs made of milk. Following the failure of this and subsequent drowning of the entire crop - researchers at Nexia say that they will scrap the project - mostly due to the fact that it is "really fucking creepy when a fucking spider starts bleating". Officials say this may cause them to re-examine their plans for a Flying Camel Bear and, of course, a monkey with four asses.
-
I hope this is true!!!!! Its been five years since the last Batman film. I think a Batman and Superman flick would be better than year one.

I'm actually quite fond of Aronofsky, but I can understand why some people might not like him. What I can't understand is somebody calling the Hitch-hiker's Guide to the Galaxy the Hitch-hiker's Guide to the Universe.

> Imagine 2 more Spider-Man films
> flashing back to him discovering
> spider powers. WHY?
Why indeed. However, it's not quite like the comparison you've drawn. The death of Batman's parents was an epic turning point in the character's origin that initiated how/why he came to be. With that in mind, do you think we'll see flashbacks of Uncle Ben's death (or discussion, character exploration, etc) in each Spider-Man sequel? Most certainly. I don't like it either, but there it is. Some folks really do need everything spelled out for them. -
Maybe I didn't read carefully enough, but is Petersen producing or directing? If he is directing, is there anyway this could be a good movie? Not to completely bash WP but while he's done action movies before, they're always a little slow paced. And that's the last thing a B&S movie needs.
Also, one little thing: The people at AOL aren't really "in charge" of the movies Warner Bros. puts out - Lorenzo DiBonaventura is - and they certainly weren't twenty years ago. AOLTW pays for the studio that pays for the properties, and the producers that have their names in the credits deal with the dailies and the quality of the film. Warner's job is merely to sell it.
And Scorpio2nd, since AF1, Wolfgang Petersen directed The Perfect Storm. -
Trust me this is what we'll be saying after the next few years. Spider-man's box-office sucess means more crap will be hoisted on us than ever before...it's Hollywood's way...take something good, and burn it down!!!
-
Its quite true. I saw a Tomorrow's World special on TV which tied in with the Spider-Man movie release. The programme examined the real scientific possibilities surrounding things like Spider sense, spider silk etc. Very cool and I taped it too.

I never got the phrase "meteoric RISE". Don't meteors FALL?
by moderator
Anyway, its not the first time that a modern "ape-man", sorry, "ape-person" has seen the light of day. There was another one (a female) found in a small Mexican village in the early 1960's. As far as I know, such individuals are the result of an active "genetic garbage" material. Genetic garbage composes 95% of human DNA, it is generally thought to retain archives of humanity's (now useless) past 4 billion years of natural evolution, and it is supposed to remain dormant.
-
The "Smallville" cast should be used for the next Superman film, otherwise you'd have too many half-assed incarnations of these characters flying around, no pun intended. "Smallville" is a hit for the WB and the show itself is only begining to show it's true creative potential. I recommend everyone go see "Charlie's Angels 2" and buy Sugar Ray albums to keep McG's career going, shoot Brendan Fraiser on the spot if he ever mentions playing Superman and give Wolfgang Peterson a good script for a completely different film.(Maybe "Iron Man" if he wants to do a comic book adaptation)
-
but I don't trust Warner Bros. anymore. Andrew Kevin Walker is an interesting choice for writer, I could see him turning out a very cool story...if WB stays out of his way. But as for Wolfgang directing? I'm not excited. This project would need someone that could handle both sides of the light/dark spectrum. Many directors seem to stay in one environment, ie: David Fincher is always in the dark where someone like Barry Sonifeld, (how the hell do you spell his last name?) tends to always make lighter, freindlier movies. I can't think of a single "name" director that can walk the tightrope. I see them either darkning up Superman to better fit into Batman's world, giving him an "edge", or even worse, lightning Batman to his "Batman & Robin" glory once again. Compound that with the fact that a movie like this REALLY needs a director who can compose those "cool" shots and keep the pace moving. Two things Wolfgang can't do IMO.______________No matter who they get, WB better be prepared to shell out at least $180 million for the budget, other wise this thing will be D.O.A.

Because his name is McG! Odds are anyone going by one name is a conceited shmuck. Keep his Charlie's Angels ass away from Superman. Furthermore, I'll be amazed if the Aronofsky project ever gets made. These movies are so chained to merchandising that its impossible for some dark, violent or edgy interpretation to get off the ground, if thats what he has in mind. Burton's Batman is the darkest that franchise will ever get short of hiring Wil Smith. Instead of rushing to get some movie into production they should seriously sit down and consider where they want to go with either of these characters. There seems to be a lot of confusion over at Warners. Just how many projects based on these characters are they considering anyway? The next Superman like Smallville? You gotta be kidding. I gave that show a chance and stopped watching after half a season. That show is so pansy ass sickening. Christ, that channel needs testosterone. Bunch of eunuchs! The only good thing was that actor playing Lex Luthor. Real good. But I digress. Short of Dark Knight Returns I'd rather not see a team up. I never liked the idea of combining these two characters. Superman just seemed too fantastic to be brought into the gritty world of Gotham City. And bringing Batman into Superman's world just diminishes his abilitites and importance. I don't think the two juxtapose well. Batman is a character more rooted in reality, however odd it may appear. To bring Superman into that world is like putting Richard Simmons in OZ, the prison show that is. Ok maybe thats not the best analogy. In any case none of these projects thrill me. I'm curious to see the Aronofsky film but somehow I doubt it'll be fun to watch.

man i can't tell you how much i hope this is true. now because i think its a good idea, i don't. but it means the idiots at WB are thinking about DC charachters again. batman is by far my favorite hero of all time. i've loved him since i was old enough to wear a robe and pretend the chair was a skyscraper. i have mixed feelings on the BATMAN films. i loved the first too. but really only as tim burton films. i mean, as good as they are, they are not the true batman. i don't mind BATMAN FOREVER b/c its a great summer action popcorn movie. and of course, BATMAN AND ROBIN is a bastard abomination and all copies should be found and destroyed. however, i don't believe clooney is to blame. and really, i see what schumacher wanted...i think. the man tried to make batman films what the batman t.v. series was. campy, light fun. it worked then, why wouldn't it work now? well, because we want the comic book batman. dark and driven. thats how it should be. i believe the general public is still tired of batman though. if i were in charge at WB, i would bring on SUPERMAN: THE MAN OF STEEL. relaunch the franchise. no need to start on krypton this time, just start with him being an established super-hero already at the planet...dating lois lane. as clark he struggles with the decision to tell lois the truth, as superman he must deal with wealthy industrialist turned politician, lex luthor, and a dangerous new foe like metallo. someone to put up a fight. by the end of the film he's defeated metallo and learned that he was created by luthor...but he can't prove it...and he tells lois his secret. cast brenden fraiser or maybe someone a little less known...but make him buff. cameron diaz might be okay for lois. let an action director direct. McG is okay i guess. but i prefer someone who loves superman. as for batman, scrap the year one story. begin with a group of thugs stealing some high tech gadgets and have the dark knight bust in to stop them. they're well trained and they fight hard and get away. detective work leads to evidence that this is a random crime..but a hunch leads batman to arkham. where he unknowlingy aids the joker in his plot to bust out. make this movie dark. lots of martial arts fighting. a black and grey costume that he can move in. add drama between bruce and alfred, batman and gordon, and mention that dick is nightwing and in bludhaven. add tons of drama to batman and joker, add that batman wants to kill joker to what he did to jason and barbara, and that he must struggle not to kill him. by the end, joker is between to near death by batman and the dark knight chooses not to kill him, but then the building they're in explodes and batman is injured and has to crawl out before bullock and montoya arrive. end the movie with the signal striking gotham's twin towers and gordon telling batman how they didn't find joker's body. give the movie a budget of 75 million like DAREDEVIL. use a modest 25 million marketing campaign instead of hyping the hell out of it like SPIDER-MAN and HULK. when you think about it, batman should be a lower budget, darker production. we don't have to see all of batman's gadgets...just those that are necessary. mabye a quick glimpse of jason's costume in glass and the giant penny. even cooler if they showed his trophy cases with a promethus helmet in it. something special for jla readers. cast a lesser known younger actor. maybe a colin farrel or someone like that. batman should be in his late twenties to early thirties, been doing this for at least six years...maybe more. let kurt russel play gordon, give alfred to anthony hopkins or ian mcwhats his name from x-men. don't worry with flashbacks of his folks death but let him look at a picture of them for a moment, let the entrance to the cave through a grandfather clock. let someone who loved batman has a kid write and direct it. release it in late spring or may. count on a rebirth of the franchise. we really want it. i know i do. but forget this pairing of the two. we're aren't ready for it. and when you do, stick to the comis, don't write some dumb reason for them pair, go to the source and bring supes to gotham because he suspects luthor is developing a kryptonite ring in his gotham division of lexcorp. bring batman to metropolis because he's tracking a someone who may know who killed his parents. let them but heads like they always do but show that mutual respect. man i love this stuff. enough of my nonsense, we're talking about the same company that released WILD WILD WEST, SUPERMAN IV, BATMAN AND ROBIN, and STEEL. ugh.
-
I'm disheartened if this is taking the place of Batman: Year One, which was the project I was most wanting to see. Still, as a concept Asylum sounds intriguing. Pity we didn't see any word on the plot. Personally, I enjoyed the animated crossover that had Robin ask for Supe's help in finding Bruce Wayne when he went missing and had Superman posing as Batman to keep up appearances. What are the thoughts of the board as to what would make a good plot for this? Anyone?
-
This is certainly interesting news. Now a lot of us on here can identify with being a gushing fanboy/girl...however, this news brings up an interesting idea I had. With the climate of trying to think outside the box with out there movie ideas, I dont see this shouldnt be attempted, since both fan camps have been wanting a seperate next edition to their saga...a Superman/Batman 5. No, not seperate films, one filmed called "Superman/Batman 5". I know theres a Superman/Batman cartoon, but imagine the poster. Id have Superman standing tall and Batman looking ominous, both on say the edge of a Chrysler building like edge(similair to the world's finest crossover cover) I mean since we first heard about a Aliens vs Predator or Jason vs Freddy, in company crossover films seem to be getting some respect, at least idea wise.(cross company crossovers like a dc vs. marvel are years off, with roger rabbit being the last one we'll see for awhile) The only rules for such a film would be no schumacher, no batman nipplage, no cheesey sets,
no fallen psuedo b-list stars, and certainly back to the noir look of batman and the cgi building look of the cities n road to perdition for metropolis.
then again such a project could be either visionary or a disaster. -
The only problem I can foresee with a SUPES v BATS movie would be maintaining some semblance of continuity with the existing BATMAN and SUPERMAN movies, even if the last movie in both series sucked the high hairy one. This means Clooney or Kilmer or even Keaton needs to be BATMAN (and obviously a newcomer, not some high-profile or half-baked star, will have to play SUPERMAN). The costumes should not be fooled with (as bad as that last Batman costume was). This would be no worse than a GREEN LANTERN/GREEN ARROW or GREEN LANTERN/FLASH movie. The two superheroes have shared a milion adventures, after all.
-
I am thoroughly confused. this whole spider goat thing-is it supposed to be a joke? will somebody please verify if this is true? first of all, wouldn't it take several years to figure out the right segment of spider genetic material to make the goat produce "silk milk" and second of all, wouldn't it take several more years to figure out how the hell you can refine the shit to the point where you could make armor out of it? the company's site has just enough substance to make it seem genuine, but is it some very intelligent person's idea of science fiction, kind of like Orson Welles' War of the Worlds, where thousands of people were convinced it was a real alien invasion? could somebody in on the joke please let me in?

Wolfgang Petersen is a fine choice to direct a WORLD'S FINES
by kingkrypton
Jon Peters won't allow it. He'll scream and yell about how unfair it is that his violation of Superman (with hack du jour McG) is getting shunted aside in favor of a film that portrays the classic Superman...the very thing that Peters has been trying to eliminate with his film for 10 years now, and the WB suits (with DiBonaventura as the head Peters @$$-kisser) will cave in and give Peters what he wants. Don't get me wrong. Petersen is a great director and I think he's a great choice to tackle WORLD'S FINEST. He's the sort of director who will respect the source material he's working from; he'd treat Superman and Batman with the utmost respect. And Andrew Kevin Walker's a comic book geek as well as a fine writer, so again, I trust him to do the job right. But I don't think we'll ever see this movie. First off, with Peters/McG skinning poor Superman alive for their own movie, the Sandra Bullock "black-clad Diana Prince dies and transfers her powers to the black-clad Donna Troy" WONDER WOMAN movie, the Peters-produce AKIRA (can't wait to see how he's gonna screw THAT up), it's pretty obvious that WB either is apathetic to its comic book properties or just flat-out hates them. They don't have the stones to make a quality comic book film these days (Richard Donner even offered to take over the new SUPERMAN movie from Peters and make it a classic-style, faithful rendition of the character--and WB turned him down flat for those very reasons, saying that they wanted the character "reinvented" by new people). And Peters has too much clout within WB for them to blow him off in favor of two guys who would actually treat the characters with love and respect. Would I like to see Petersen and Walker doing Superman and Batman? You bet. I'd like to see them handle either of the characters solo, if that were possible. A WORLD'S FINEST from these two would be great...alas, we'll never see it. The McG/Peters SUPERMAN and the Bullock WONDER WOMAN will get the nod. Best to just blow this project off as a beautiful pipe dream.
-
"Wolfgang Peterson!" BTW I disdain Matthew Lillard.
-
God, they can't be this short-sighted, can they? Here's what they should do...While Aronofsky is doing THE FOUNTAIN, have Peterson relaunch SUPERMAN. Sign the principals to 3 picture deals. Then, BATMAN: YEAR ONE, with, of course, 3 picture deals all around. Then after the respective successes re-establish the franchises, each get a sequel, to firmly establish the movie mythos. THEN, and only then, do you launch a WORLD'S FINEST movie, and it'll be an event the likes of which cinema has never seen before!!!

The public does NOT want YEAR ONE. A bunch of whiney fan boys want Year One. Year One is so far behind us. it would be a mistake and a mis-step to do Year One NOW. They are going into the FIFTH MOVIE. Year One would have worked back in '89 as a first film but not NOW. We need to pick up the pieces where Batman and Robin left off, lose Robin, get a great screenplay and a terrific director who is willing to be true to the comics and get a good film that uses the first four merely as backstory, and consentrates on creating a comic book movie that will blow Spider-Man out of the water. We need a movie that is smart AND fun. Action packed WITHOUT being dumbed down. Spider-Man did it right. X-Men did it right. Warners needs to look at those movies and learn from them. Frank Miller and Aronofsky are great but NOT YEAR ONE!
Bring back Clooney was Batman and let his ACT this time. The man is great and had nothing to work with in Batman and Robin. Bring back Two-Face (I'd re-cast him, though). Lets see a great Batman movie where he uses his brains more then gadgets. Lets see him in a costume without nipples. Lets see one hero/one villain. ANd most importantly, lets move FORWARD not backwards. I want BATMAN FIVE!!! Not Batman Year One!!! -

With all due respect to Andrew Kevin Walker, who's a pretty good cynical screenwriter ("Seven" was excellent, "Sleepy Hollow" good, and "8mm" wasn't as bad as everyone says), this Superman/Batman movie sounds like just the kind of campy, big-budget tripe that ruined the "Batman" movies, and turned the studios off to comic book films a few years back. Combining superheroes is not a good idea on film. Creating a cinematic world where masked vigilantes like Spiderman and Batman are part of everyday life and treated respectfully is hard enough as it is without having them hanging out together comparing spandex and complaining about the migraines caused by their arch-villains; it's inevitably going to lead to such films not taking themselves seriously (really, how can they?), thus alienating the actual comic fans first, and then the average moviegoer. Why else haven't they made an "Avengers" movie yet? I say fuck the campy team-ups and jump straight to "Batman: Year One," and any Frank Miller & Alan Moore projects that attempts to bring some decree of dignity to comics.
-
Superman will kick his ass.
-
I really wouldn't mind this movie if the characters are written well, Batman should be dark and not talk a lot while he is taking down thugs. and Superman could have some..camp...because he's Superman, damnit, he is practically a boyscout, but i wouldn't like him as he is in his own movies. I just recently bought Superman: The movie and the fanboy alert sounded as he redirected the rocket heading to New Jersey...he pushed it. and i thought "Gee Whiz! Superman doesn't push things, he punches them!" Well anyway, i think that another sequel would be better for the franchise and then Year One...because they need to fix batman. i'd threaten Keaton at gun point to return even though many people didn't like him, because Keaton IS Batman, and then i'd start it off with a Joker Imposter or The Scarecrow, cause the Scarecrow is always good for Batman killing Robin and Batgirl so that Batman gets pissed and Depressed and then losed the camp and gets dark and fights like a maniac...cause that's what we need, we need Batman to be Dark again.

JonQuixote, the only way Petersen is going to relaunch Superman.
by kingkrypton
...is if Peters and McG relinquish the project (and hopefully take Abrams with them). Sadly, that's not going to happen. The only way we're going to get a faithful rendition of Superman is if Petersen goes ahead with WORLD'S FINEST, because the Peters/McG/Abrams movie won't do it. This is our last chance to get a faithful, quality rendition of Superman. If this falls thru (and I think it will, because Peters is hell-bent on doing Superman HIS way), odds are we'll NEVER see a faithful version of Superman ever again. Maybe this is putting the cart before the horse, but if this is the only way we're going to get a creative team that respects the material and can do it well on Superman, then I want them to do it. Because there are no other options at this point.
