Get SPUN!! Check Out The Official NC-17 Website!!

Published at:  Jun 24, 2002 8:29:46 AM CDT

Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab.

Here’s the e-mail I got:

Hey Mori,

Just wanted to drop you a line to point you and AICN to the "Spun" movie web site. If you head to SpunTheMovie.com , you'll find an "R" and "NC-17" version with information about the characters, cast, and film makers. There's also a great little cooking show video of Mickey "The Cook" Rourke making Amfetadrine Dope. Interestingly enough there is a link to a trailer which only takes you to a pop-up of an old television set that says "We'll Be Right Back." But I found a link to a 4 minute plus trailer for the film that knocked my socks off. Hope you enjoy it:

MacGuffin

Now, Quint and Harry and everyone at CineVegas got a chance to see this film, and it wasn’t until after they saw it that I realized this is the directorial debut of Jonas Ackerland, a gifted and disturbing video director (Madonna’s “Ray of Light”, Prodigy’s “Smack My Bitch Up”, Metallica’s “Turn The Page”). Everyone’s reaction seemed to be strong, and this is definitely a film I’m dying to see right now. Look at the cast: Jason Schwartzman; John Leguizamo; Mickey “The Mick” Rourke (I always pray for Rourke to redeem himself, and on occasion, he delivers); Brittany Murphy (capable of trashy transcendence on par with Jennifer Jason Leigh); Patrick Fugit; Mena Suvari; Peter Stormare. This is a solid indie cast in the hands of a director who has me deeply curious. The video with Rourke teaching you how to cook speed is pretty funny in a skanky sort of way.

The FULL-LENGTH TRAILER he sent the link for is truly deranged, and should only be viewed by our adult readers. Unless you’re a really mature young reader. Or a really immature older reader. Or easily offended. I thought it was pretty damn cool, and there’s something in there that should make any POPE OF GREENWICH VILLAGE fan smile, like I did. And by the way… if you’re not a fan of POPE… why the fuck not?

But I digress. I’m gonna go check the trailer out again. Let me know what you think.

"Moriarty" out.

Spun is yet another desperately over-directed Tarantino rip-off

    by cutter's way

Weren't those things outlawed? It's no longer "hip" or funny when a gaggle of proto movie stars act like dopehead losers and shoot each other. And I don't care how fucking bad they make their teeth look. Freeze-frame character intros = amateur night.

    Requiem for a Dream?

    by sgtedrock

...except for speed rather than heroin. Hopefully Aranofsky will be flattered rather than pissed off and keep working on Batman Year 1.

    Veddy interestink!

Kind of like an "awful warning"/educational movie. Hmm, but will cute widdle Brittany out-skank Helena Bonham Carter in Fight Club?

    MAX FISCHER IS THE BOMB!

    by the tao of joe

Jason S. even made a great performance out of the totally uninspired lump known as "Slackers". This movie looks very inspired and risque. Whoever earlier made a mention about requiem, all I gots to say is GET YOUR HEAD OUT OF YOUR ASS! This movie in no way looks as dark as that film (not that that is bad), and Joss made an awesome short film from the spare footage of the rejected smashing pumpkins video for TRY TRY TRY. You can get it on the pumpkins video compilation dvd thingy they released last christmas. Well, I cant wait for the dvd, because I know this film wont make it to the screen as it is.

    Who Broke The Trailer?

    by ericalan69

'cause, you know, you can only download the first 6%, and then it promptly stops dead. (sigh) Did anyone happen to save the damned thing to their system, and feel like sticking it on a File Sharing network, please? // I mean, how can I join in all of this bitching (or, conversely, sing the praises of the damned thing) when I can't even see it?! // e.

    And Another Thing....

    by ericalan69

....I don't know what's scarier on that website: Mena Suvari photographed as one exceedingly fucked up tweaker, or a lite-rock, acoustic version of Iron Maiden's "The Number Of The Beast." Scary either way, man.... // e.

    nope

    by white noise

Saw this at CineVegas. Basically I remember thinking at one point "this would probably be pretty interesting if they shaved about 20 minutes out of it" I then looked at my watch and saw that about 40 minutes had passed. Everything in this film was done better in Requiem, and they didn't even bother to make it about a different drug for gods sake. But how about a best make-up nod huh? I mean with that stuff on her teeth I totally bought Mena as a speed freak tweaker.
